FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Friends, We are blessed with the opportunity to impact others by sharing the magnificence of God! At Chapel Hill Academy, our purpose has always been teaching children about Christ’s love while providing strong academic training for the future He has planned for them. The focus is to instill a foundation of faith in these young lives, and equip them for their calling. Though the CHA ministry is designed for children, our families have also been impacted greatly by Christ through this Christian community. We cannot underestimate the importance of ministering to one another along with our children. It says in Deuteronomy 6:6, that we cannot pass on to our children what is not first in our own hearts. Each day, I witness examples of parents, grandparents, and staff members living out their spiritual calling to impact children and each other through Christian community. As David writes in Psalm 63:1, we are to seek God and thirst after Him as in a dry and weary land. It is important to continually listen to and receive God’s instruction in His Word as illuminated by the Holy Spirit. When we are saturated in the Word of God and embracing His will, our hearts are changed, and we are more equipped to share that with others, including our children. Chapel Hill Academy is a community of current and alumni families, grandparents and partners who work together for His glory. We are not alone, for community is what God has provided for us to encourage, support, and assist one another as a gift of Christian fellowship. This issue of CHA Magazine celebrates the many blessings of community at Chapel Hill Academy. May you be blessed as you view the images and heart-felt sentiments that fill these pages. God is at work here, and we give Him all the glory! Serving together in Christ,

cha rummage sale

T

his past August, a team of CHA parent volunteers planned, organized, and hosted our first annual CHA Rummage Sale!

The sale featured beautiful antiques, holiday decor, shoes, jewelry, toys, household goods, and everything in between. In addition to being a fundraiser, the rummage sale served as an outreach to our local community. Thank you to the families who donated items and for those who shopped the sale. We are truly grateful for the coordinators and the volunteers who sorted, labeled, and worked the event. The rummage sale resulted in a GREAT success! MARK YOUR CALENDARS! The second annual CHA Rummage Sale will take place in June, 2018. Stay tuned for an exact date! If you are interested in volunteering for next year, please contact Nina Stultz at nina@chapel-hill.org. COUGAR CLOSET

What do you do with slightly used school uniform items when your child graduates or outgrows them? Donate them to the Cougar Closet! The CHA Cougar Closet was formally opened during the Rummage Sale last August and continues to bless families throughout the school year. Proceeds raised through this sale have been used to purchase needed items for music, physical education and recess. Thank you to the parent volunteers for recognizing an opportunity to bless CHA families and for organizing the Cougar Closet.

O

ne of the blessings of working within a Christian school is that when we speak about character development, we are given the opportunity to connect character to Christ.

This year at Chapel Hill Academy, we have shared the truth of Micah 6:8 with our students and staff. Micah 6:8 says, “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” This truth guides us as we talk with our students about the kind of environment we want our school to reflect and also what God calls us to be when we walk out of the school doors. The Lord requires us to act justly! Will we respond when we see injustice in our world? Will we acknowledge matters of justice in which we must surrender our own wants and desires? Will we pursue justice for our teachers, our classmates and for those who have no voice? (Proverbs 31:8) The Lord requires us to love mercy! Will we fully embrace the mercy that Christ has shown us to the point that we not only love to receive mercy but love to offer it as well? Will we take joy in being given the opportunity to forgive and extend the same kind of grace that Jesus gave to us, even when we did not deserve it? (Romans 5:8) The Lord requires that we walk humbly with God! Will we pursue a posture of humility? Will we be willing to receive correction from those who care about us? Will we take on the nature of a servant as we are told Jesus did in Philippians 2? Many people in the world would affirm these character traits: to care about justice, to be merciful and to be humble, but living them out in our daily lives is a whole different story. Clearly any attempt to live a life that models Micah 6:8 cannot be done in our own strength or effort. This is where we as Christian educators get to connect our students to the author of justice, the author of mercy and the perfect model of walking humbly. If we are not connected to the source and power of the One who has called us to this lifestyle, we will fail miserably in our attempt to live this out. Our good and faithful God is more than sufficient to provide us with all that we need to equip us to pursue a Micah 6:8 life, and for our students this process begins right now, every day, in every class. God continues to mercifully show us the power of speaking His Word into young people. I have witnessed students wanting to do whatever they can to make our school community welcoming to others. I have witnessed students heartbroken over things that are not right in our world and then brainstorm as to how they can be a part of changing it for good. I have witnessed students offer forgiveness and seek forgiveness with a truly pure heart to reconcile with each other. I have witnessed students humbly walk into my office unprompted and say, “I know I haven’t been my best and I am sorry, I want to do better. Can you help me and hold me accountable?” This is so much bigger than just good character traits. This is so much bigger than just walking in the school doors for academics. This is so much bigger than just social interaction. This is about becoming more like Jesus and allowing Him to use our transformed selves to bring hope and redemption through the Gospel to the world. Recently, I have been more challenged than ever to see even the mundane, seemingly insignificant details of the day to have eternal value. This is also true of the details of the school day and the little interactions each student has with their teachers and their peers. We are calling students to more, we are calling students to live out their faith and we are calling students to seek first the kingdom of God by modeling what Micah 6:8 commands of us and often, it is in the little things that we see the fruits of that effort. May God take the little things at Chapel Hill Academy and use them for big proclamations of His glory and goodness.

sonrun festival

S

aturday, September 30, 2017, was a glorious day for the annual SonRun Festival. The sounds of excitement from students and families filled the air as the 1-mile Fun Run began. At the starting line, two Chapel Hill Academy classmates proudly proclaimed that they had run the race every year - but had not yet won! Many new families enjoyed their first SonRun Festival experience. One particular new family invited their grandma, grandpa, and cousins! This is what we call a, family of families! As the race came to an end, there were cheers and smiles of accomplishment! Older siblings encouraged their younger siblings, “Keep going, you are almost there,” and “Let’s finish. We can do it together!” Soon after the Fun Run, the 5K took off with many runners and walkers eager to enjoy the beautiful morning on the course. Waiting at the finish line were excited family and friends cheering them on! Together. That is what it is all about-faith, family, food, fun, and community. The heart of the SonRun Festival is being together in community; working together as we build Christian community on our campus; and reaching out to our local community to invite, share, and care to make a difference!

Chapel Hill Academy will host its 17th annual Gala on Saturday, March 10, 2018, at Hazletine National Golf Club in Chaska. This year, the Gala will feature the precious children of CHA! Come and experience an evening to celebrate our students as they share how God is working in their lives and what they are learning at Chapel Hill Academy. Each year, CHA is blessed by the generosity of our donors. The annual Gala is an opportunity to be in community and draw support for continued work in the mission of Christ-centered and God-glorifying education. The fruit is demonstrated in our children, and each day, hearts are changing and minds are growing in preparation for His divine purpose. This year is focused on the students; therefore, we pray for strong attendance and heightened participation in the beautiful, powerful, and life changing effort that is happening at Chapel Hill Academy. We encourage our entire school community to attend the Gala and invite friends and family. Together in community, is how God has designed us to live. Together, we are a Christian family. Together, we want all to know that children are trusting in Christ and learning with excellence at Chapel Hill Academy.

T

hroughout the past several months, Chapel Hill Academy has been mentioned on KTIS 98.5 FM as a proud sponsor of Christian events in the Twin Cities. This budding partnership with KTIS is established to promote Christian education while hosting some of the hottest Christian artists at Grace Church in Eden Prairie. On November 5, CHA and KTIS welcomed Matthew West and Jordan Feliz’s, All In Tour as they performed to a sold out crowd. At this event, the CHA “Blue Crew” was in full force handing out light-up CHA bracelets, registering people to win an autographed guitar, and sharing many of the great distinctives Chapel Hill Academy has to offer families who are considering Christian education. Leading up to the concert, we announced Sharing the Passion, an initiative designed to thank our families for referring new families to CHA. Those who participated were entered into a drawing for a special concert experience that included VIP tickets, backstage reception, and photo with Matthew West. CHA’s presence at the concert was highly successful. Many families were able to learn more about the CHA ministry while numerous visits from current and alumni students and families sealed the night as another fantastic family of families event! We need YOU! Help share the value of Christian education at CHA by joining the “Blue Crew.” Please email the Admissions Department at admissions@chapel-hill.org to get on board!

New Staff Marisa Zarate (Profé Zarate), originally from the Peruvian Andes, is our new Spanish teacher in grades 4-8. She has taught Spanish, French, and English for more than 20 years at both high school and college levels. Six years ago, she graduated with her Master’s Degree in Literacy Education with a concentration in Second Language Learning from the University of Southern Maine. She is passionate about enhancing the students’ understanding and overall skills in the Spanish language by connecting the lessons with real experiences, customs, or stories from the Latin cultures. She truly feels blessed to serve in Christian education, for it is an honor to freely share the love of Jesus with her students and integrate His teachings into all areas of the Spanish curriculum.

Megan Dyck is an assistant teacher in the Kindergarten classroom this year. She attended Bethel University where she achieved her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree in Literacy Education. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, and taking her dog, Peanut, for walks. Mrs. Dyck truly loves working with students and appreciates the privilege of expressing the love of Jesus in and out of the classroom. Last year, she was married to "Mr. D”, a math teacher at Southwest Christian High School.

Carol Esser joined CHA this year to teach STEM classes to elementary and middle school students. She has a Bachelor’s Degree from Concordia University-Chicago in K-12 Mathematics and Physical Sciences, and a Master’s Degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Illinois. She and her husband, Pat, live in Mayer, Minnesota, and they have two college-aged children. Carol believes that Christian education is a great blessing to our communities, and she appreciates the opportunity to partner with families to support the faith development of their children. She is encouraged by Romans 15:13, May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Patti Ferguson serves as the Enrollment & Family Relations Coordinator. She leads campus tours, welcomes new families, and helps families engage in the CHA community. Patti and her husband, Tony, have two children. Their daughter, Kayla, is married and works as a web designer; Joey, their son, is a junior at Taylor University studying computer science and math. Patti enjoys teaching piano lessons, relaxing at their lake cabin, and spending time with family and friends. She feels blessed to be a part of the CHA community and working in a Christian environment. 10 | CHA Magazine

Alyssa Kasahara joined our staff in November as an assistant teacher in first and second grade. She is a Chapel Hill Academy alum and a recent graduate of the University of Northwestern St. Paul with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Music and Bible. She has an older brother, Andrew, who also attended CHA; and two younger brothers in high school. Alyssa attends Jubilee Community Church in Minneapolis which has a strong connection to Hope Academy!

Nicole Manteuffel joined CHA this fall as a second grade teacher. She is a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls where she enjoyed running on the university’s track and field team while completing her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. She and her fiancé, Tom, are getting married in June of 2018. Her favorite joys of second grade include helping her students grow into independent and responsible learners; developing their ability to use reading to learn; and watching them grow in their confidence, knowledge, and love for the Lord. Nicole enjoys spending time running, reading, gardening, and being outside at the cabin with friends and family. She chose to serve in Christian education because she loves partnering with parents as they raise their children to know and love Christ.

Taylor Schull is a new 4th Grade teacher at CHA. She is a graduate of Bethel University with a double major in Biology and Elementary Education and is very excited to begin her teaching career in Christian education. Taylor enjoys spending time with her husband, Steven, travelling, trying new recipes, and outdoor activities. She feels blessed to be part of a school where she can help students grow academically and spiritually.

Nina also supervises the business administrative team in marketing and IT, accounting, human resources, and admissions. She is originally from Chicago but has called Minnesota home since 2nd Grade. She is forever grateful to have grown up in Christian schools beginning at Trinity Lutheran in Waconia, Mayer Lutheran High School, and finally, Bethel University in St. Paul. She met her husband Ray at Bethel at an air-band and homecoming cheer competition (where they won!) Nina and Ray have two daughters, Eliza and Audrey, who are also part of CHA in Kindergarten and Junior Kindergarten. Nina and her family attend Grace Church and have a heart for welcoming new families!

For the past ten years, she has been working primarily in private business settings. She and her husband, Jason, have a baby boy and recently shared that they are expecting their second child this spring. Kate’s favorite part of working at Chapel Hill Academy is witnessing God’s children learning and growing in Him every day.

grandparents day

E

ach October, CHA students take time to honor and bless their grandparents through classroom activities, written tributes, and special musical performances. As always, this year many grandparents attended and spoke with great joy of spending time in the classroom with their grandchildren. Middle school students had fun working on STEM projects with grandparents while other students interviewed them and recorded responses on their new BAK laptop devices. Younger students demonstrated what they have been learning in the classroom by reading stories, reciting Bible verses, performing plays, and singing for their grandparents. A highlight of the day was the annual program in the auditorium. This special event, hosted by a group of eighth graders, featured musical performances from our students in Kindergarten through eighth grade. Under the direction of CHA Music and Worship Arts Teacher, Andrew Craig, students blessed their grandparents with a variety of musical numbers including a beautiful arrangement of, Holy, Holy, Holy, complete with a bell choir accompaniment. The Jr. Kindergarten and Kindergarten students stole the show with a sweet song proclaiming that they want to be ‘just like Grandma and Grandpa.’ Later in the program, a few middle school students shared essays that expressed special qualities of their grandparents. The program concluded on an entertaining note with a student/grandparent challenge game. Grandparents Day is always a wonderful way to celebrate the blessing of family and the special role a grandparent plays in a child’s life.

FALL SERVICE DAY STUDENT REFLECTIONS – Grades 6-8 6TH Grade - Summerwood Senior Care

Service is fun! For the 6th Grade Service Day, we went to a wonderful place called Summerwood. Summerwood is a home for the elderly, to assist them in their everyday activities in the later years of their lives. We sat with the darling grandmas and grandpas, chatted with them, laughed with them, and built relationships with them. We made a variety of autumn crafts, and they were overjoyed with our helping hands and caring hearts. We were there for about two hours, but the time FLEW because we were having so much fun. I don't know who had a more joyous time, the elderly, or the 6th graders! Gabby A.

7th Grade - Hubert Home – Yard and Garden Clean-up

When we went to the Hubert’s house, we got to see their daughter, Katilyn. I saw that she was in so much pain and that she was extremely sick. I felt bad for her, and I knew what she was going through. When I was in the Ronald McDonald house for 3 months, people came to our home to clean and dust our house. I was happy to rake leaves and clean the Hubert’s barn for them at this time when they needed it. People helped me when I was sick, so I helped another CHA student when she was sick. I’m happy to help those who are in need. Adah T.

8th Grade - Chanhassen Library

My group went to the Chanhassen Library to clean, organize, and help with other stuff they needed to do. I cleaned books, dusted, and organized the shelves. I learned that it’s really hard to clean the whole library, and whoever has to clean should really be thanked for giving lots of time and effort. If I go to the library, I will make sure to respect them and to clean up after myself. Jayden S.

8th Grade - CHA Yard Clean-up

I raked leaves outside of CHA for about two hours. I thought that it was really fun, and I liked helping our school look neat and clean. Also, it reminded me to look at God’s beautiful nature and that He is the only way this earth could have been created. Finally, I learned to persevere in all things, and that our custodian, Mr. Zak, works very very hard for us. Truman H.

8th Grade - Home in Carver

My group went to a home in Carver with five young children, including triplet babies! The mom gave us a big list of detailed jobs, but we were able to finish them all. Since she did not think that we would even get half of the list done, she was blown away by the results. You could tell that she felt really blessed by our work. We all learned that even though something might not seem that important to us, other people see it as a priority. We could not have done this without God, though. He truly used us in ways that we couldn’t imagine. Paige L. Fall/Winter | 13

O

n the Fourth of July, 2017, CHA families and students gathered to proudly shine the light and love of Jesus!

What made this day even more exciting? CHA returned as a participant in the annual Chanhassen 4th of July Parade. This was a prime opportunity for families to build memories by sharing the blessing of Christian education at Chapel Hill Academy.

Life is made up of moments, and these moments turn into memories. Memories become traditions, and traditions are what we look forward to each year. Traditions are what bring people together and build that treasured feeling of belonging. Our hope and prayer is that each child and family will always remember the special memories that are made at CHA.

This year our Spiritual Life theme, It’s All About the Heart, is the central focus at CHA. Our utmost care and concern is for the hearts of our students, staff, families, and friends. Together, we share the joy of Christ and support one another in Christian fellowship. As a family of families, we desire to minister, share moments, make memories, and enjoy the traditions that build deep and lasting relationships. This is what brings faith and community to life!

program updates music

Fall and winter bring an exciting array of performing and learning opportunities for students studying music at Chapel Hill Academy! Grandparents’ Day was once again a joyous occasion filled with music performed by our CHA choirs, from Jr. K to 8th grade. We also enjoyed the premier of our hand bell choir, featuring 7th and 8th grade students in Music Studies class. The 7th & 8th grade choir classes had the privilege of welcoming Mr. Curtis Kettler, Director of Choirs at Southwest Christian High School, to be a guest teacher once again this year. In addition to the curricular music class, several middle school students enjoy participating on the Worship Team which continues to expand. This year, three excellent small groups rotate leading worship for chapel each week. This is a great way for students to gain leadership skills while developing their musical ability and a heart for the Lord. For information about CHA Fine Arts opportunities and upcoming performances, check out our new Fine Arts handbook found on our website under Programs & Services the CHA website, under Programs & Services.

I

t’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Preparations are in full swing for two Christmas Performances at Chapel Hill Academy: the K-4th Grade Christmas Musical (December 7, 1:30 PM & 7 PM) and the 5th – 8th Grade Sounds of the Season concert featuring A King is Born! (December 14, 10 AM & 7 PM).

This year’s Christmas musical, Miracle at the Christmas Café, takes place in Bethlehem at a cozy diner, the Christmas Café. This fictional, 50's-style, local eatery hosts a cast of unique characters who work, eat, and rock ’n roll at the diner. They tell the incredible story of how they were involved in the events surrounding the night Jesus was born. Enjoy hearing the Gospel with a fresh perspective, a little bit of fun, and a whole lot of Truth! The 5th-8th Grade Sounds of the Season concert is a new enhancement at Chapel Hill Academy. This year, upper grade students will present a full-length band, choir, and orchestra concert proclaiming the Good News with musical joy! Come and celebrate the birth of Christ through song and Scripture. Let us worship the Lord together with familiar carols and inspiring songs in celebration of Christ’s birth, life, death, and resurrection. Following the concert on December 14, the CHA Make & Sell Marketplace will be open featuring gifts and crafts created by students in Mrs. Sweeney’s art classes. Proceeds from the marketplace will benefit our friends at Hope Academy in Minneapolis. This program is for families of all ages as a time to celebrate the birth of our Savior with an incredible night of music, creativity, worship, and Christmas cheer!

year-end giving 47 years in the southwest metro Community 47 years of being a Community of believers 47 years more because of Community When Chapel Hill Academy began in 1970, God had a plan for every family, every student, and every staff member. Forty-seven years later the building has changed, new families and staff have walked the halls, but what has not changed are the stories… ...stories of children coming to faith, stories of God's presence for a family in need, stories of students learning who they are and whose they are in the Community and family of faith. This year we invite you to give a gift to Chapel Hill Academy as we impact the Community around us, connect with our Community beside us, and be the Community that gives for our students this year and the years to come!

Missions corner FROM CHAPEL HILL ACADEMY TO ETHIOPIA How do you spell home?

E-T-H-I-O-P-I-A

Ron Gullman, husband of one of Chapel Hill Academy’s second grade teachers, grew up in Ethiopia as a missionary kid. His love for the people and his desire to encourage the spread of the Gospel has drawn him back to this country he calls, “home”. Ron, along with his wife, Diane, have sensed God’s calling to support and minister to local churches, pastors, lay leaders, and wives serving in Ethiopia. Ron will be working with a multicultural team to help train pastors with a discipleship focus. Diane will be serving alongside Ron, ministering specifically to ministry wives while she learns the Amharic language of the country. Diane Gullman has blessed the entire Chapel Hill Academy community during her 15 years of teaching in the primary grades. Her love for children, her skillful instruction, and godly example will be missed by all. Believing that God has clearly called them to minister to the people of Ethiopia, the Chapel Hill Academy family sends them off in January with gratitude, love, prayers, and encouragement.

alumni news Thank you... Thank you to Joshua Manion from troop #589, on the completion of his Eagle Scout project! Joshua and his team constructed new hallway bulletin boards for Chapel Hill Academy. The project required research, planning, approvals, fundraising, assembling, and coordinating a team of Eagle Scout workers. The boards will provide space for displaying student work and decorating our halls for years to come. Joshua is a member of the 8th grade class of 2015 and is currently a junior at Eden Prairie High School.

athletics

T

he Chapel Hill Academy sports teams have shown great success this fall. Sports bring about many opportunities for students to build relationships and shine their light for Jesus. Each season, Chapel Hill Academy athletes grow in their skills and their character by showing kindness, encouragement, and respect to teammates, coaches, and their opponents. CHA strives to help our athletes gain a better understanding of their purpose and what God has planned for their lives by teaching the G.L.O.R.I.F.Y. curriculum (Godly Lessons On Reflecting Integrity For Youth). During the fall season, students have been learning about attentiveness, dependability, servant leadership, and success. Through the coming winter basketball season, coaches plan to continue the program by focusing on six additional character traits that will enhance their development as an athlete and as a young follower of Christ. It is great to be part of a community that encourages and supports character and values for our players, parents, and coaches. Our players worked together, were coachable, and consistently put forth their best effort. Both of the 5th/6th grade soccer teams closed out their season with a record of 5-1. Likewise, the 7th and 8th grade soccer team had an excellent season and ended with a 4-2-1 record. This fall, our gym was filled with many eager volleyball players with six teams in grades 4-8. Many of our teams showed great improvement over the season and competed strongly in their final tournaments. Each CHA volleyball team competed with excellence in the semi-final round. The 4th and 6th grade teams took 2nd place, and the 7th and 8th grade Gold team moved on to the final round where they took 1st place! Congratulations to our teams on a fantastic season! CHA has been blessed with many wonderful Christian coaches who have been training our athletes both spiritually and physically through sports. We set our standards high for players when it comes to Christian character. It is our desire to develop each one to be a positive light in the community as they compete against other schools in the SSYO league. What a great blessing it is to witness the development in our athletes throughout the season!
