Passion for Christ. Education for life. Published for Families and Friends of Chapel Hill Academy
FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Greetings Friends, The past few years at CHA have been an exciting time of blessings, transition, and vision for the future. We are immensely grateful for the Lord’s continued direction and provision in all that has been accomplished. Trusting Him to lead, we look to the future with great anticipation and excitement. What is perhaps most exciting is the bright future ahead for our students. The Lord has designed a unique plan and purpose for each child, and by His grace, He has equipped us well to help prepare them for a life that will bring Him glory. This is an important calling, one that is taken with utmost care and commitment to God and to His children who fill our classrooms. Each year at CHA, the abounding love of Christ is revealed through His masterful work within our school. This fall, we welcomed several new students and families, acquired exceptional new staff members, launched new programs, and completed a massive renovation and expansion of the school facility. Spiritual development is reflected not just in the classroom instruction, but through many examples of students providing help to those in need, taking initiative to pray together, and sharing the gospel with others.
Along with this, CHA students are growing academically. Last spring, our annual Terra Nova Assessment scores showed significant gains across the grade levels. CHA consistently ranks high in academics among ACSI schools both nationally and internationally. Thanks to our dedicated teachers, a strong Christian curriculum, and the vital partnership with our parents, Chapel Hill Academy students are well prepared for the next steps in their spiritual and academic journeys. I am grateful to God and blessed by our community for the work we do together. This is important work which guides students to deepen their faith and learning in preparation for the future. In this issue of CHA Magazine, may the Lord’s blessings over this ministry be personified throughout the pages. May His name be glorified through what He has provided, and may we be confident in the glorious future He is leading us to pursue together. Peace and blessings to all,
Kassie Grosz, Ed. S. The fifth Head of School of Chapel Hill Academy 952-949-9014 groszk@chapel-hill.org

raise be to God for His great faithfulness! We are excited to celebrate the completion of our school’s renovation and expansion. The CHA community joined together over a year ago to support the vision for Building a Legacy of Faith. Thank you for the many prayers, financial support, and hard work during the Capital Campaign. As we celebrate our school’s improved facilities while pledges continue to be fulfilled, our prayer is that God will be glorified at Chapel Hill Academy. We are committed to faithful stewardship of what He has provided by working diligently to point children to Christ. We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done. Psalm 78:4b

T
rust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)
Trust does not always come easy for us in life. Multiple times throughout the day we might be asked to trust in something. Advertisers are often encouraging us to trust that they provide the best product at the best price. Politicians ask us to put our trust in their ability to make good decisions on our behalf. Even when we drive a car and enter an intersection we are expected to trust that the other drivers will obey the traffic signs. Trust can be a difficult thing. No matter what is vying for our trust, we will never be able to actually place our trust in something unless we believe in it first. We must first believe in its claims, we must believe it is trustworthy, we must believe it will be for our benefit. The same can be said regarding our trust in God. Our spiritual life theme at Chapel Hill Academy this year is: Believe, Trust, Obey. With our taproot verse of Proverbs 3:5-6, we learn that out of our belief in God comes trust. This is not some ordinary trust, like when we trust that our hairstylist will get our haircut correct, but this is a trust upon which we build our lives. This is trust that leads us to believe that God knows better than our own understanding. This is trust that believes that God will make our paths straight. We believe that this is for our own good, therefore we can trust. Our desire to believe, our ability to trust and our longing to obey God is rooted and established in God’s great love for us. “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) We are praying that every student who walks through the doors of Chapel Hill Academy will experience God’s great love for them in such a profound way that they will not only BELIEVE in the promises of God, but that they will place their full TRUST in Him and in response want to OBEY the God who loved them first. Any other alternative would leave them longing for something more. It is this passion for students to experience Jesus that drives us to integrate the Bible, testimony, worship and prayer into all of our content areas. This is why we do chapel, family groups, service projects, Bible class and special prayer times. Additionally, mentor groups are a wonderful faith development component that we provide for our middle school students. These small groups take place after the chapel service so that students can discuss what they heard with a trusted adult mentor and work together with their peers to apply the message to their lives. This also provides an opportunity for more focused prayer times, personal encouragement and support for our middle school students. We have great mentor leaders comprised of CHA teachers, staff, parents and local pastors. At Chapel Hill Academy we believe that partnering with families to invest in the spiritual formation of young people is an incredibly worthwhile pursuit. Ultimately, we trust that Jesus will be the author and perfecter of our faith and we seek to obey the One that is worthy of all praise and glory. Please join us in praying for our students and families as God continues to shape us into what He is calling us to be.
May we all never stop growing in our belief, increasing in our trust and humbly obeying our Savior Jesus.

hapel Hill Academy will host its 15th annual Live and Silent Auction Gala on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska. As the largest fundraiser for Chapel Hill Academy, this special evening allows the school community to recognize the important work of Christian education while raising the much-needed funds to support CHA programs. Over the years, the gala has grown from a dessert social in the Old Gym to a semi-formal night out with more than 250 people supporting CHA. The evening will begin at 5:30pm with guests mingling as they participate in the ever-popular silent auction. Items for bid include class projects, travel, sporting event tickets, coveted teacher experiences, restaurant gift cards, jewelry, and much more! The dinner program follows the Silent Auction in the Grand Ballroom featuring heartwarming stories of the impact CHA has had on alumni students. The evening concludes with a nail-biting live auction that in past years has included a puppy, trip to London, and unique sports experiences.

junior kindergarten
T
his fall, CHA opened its doors to four year-olds for the first time since the early Montessori program in the 1970s. Now, Junior Kindergarten is in full swing, and only God knew that the former CHA administrative offices could be transformed into a warm, cheerful learning environment for little ones. Long before we even thought of it, God knew that the space would be a perfect place for pre-primary students to gather each day to play, pray, and learn about Him and His amazing world. Along with the wonderful space, the children absolutely love to run, jump, slide, and climb on their beautiful, new playground. In the classroom and on the playground, important work is occurring as they interact with each other and their teachers. These experiences help children practice character traits such as trust, obedience, patience, peace, and respect, and of course the Golden Rule. Bible lessons regularly produce wide eyes while the children listen to Bible stories and begin to understand God’s amazing power. Activity is also a very important part of the day with plenty of movement and songs that range from “Our God Is So Big” to the popular “Ballet Dancing Truck Driver.” In addition to the social and creative play, Jr. K prepares preschoolers well for their next year in Kindergarten. They learn algebra, geometry, and number concepts with pattern blocks, Geo-boards, tag-bags, counting bears, and Legos. A strong foundation for reading is laid through active story play that develops language skills. Math and language are truly hands-on learning experiences in Jr. K at CHA!
CHA is blessed to have wonderful Junior Kindergarten teachers who are dedicated to serving God and our young families. We look forward to what the Lord has planned for the growth of our Jr. K program in the coming years!

stem program
T
he CHA STEM program is building 21st Century Skills for students K-8!
In the elementary grades, STEM kicks off with Kindergarten and first grade students who begin by learning communication and teamwork skills along with the basics of earth, physical, and life sciences. This is an important stepping stone for students in second through fifth grade who learn and practice the scientific method. The Great Banana Experiment is a fun way for second grade students to explore the impact of variables in an experiment. Students attempt to create a method to best preserve a banana through the use of temperature, packaging, and solutions. Third grade students learn how to form a hypothesis to create and test a bridge design. Through examining bird’s beak, fourth graders learn that God's designs are perfect, and that man’s inventions are often inspired by His creation. Fifth grade students enjoy discovering what will happen to a gummy bear when it is soaked in various solutions. Will the gummy bear stay the same, will it grow, or will it disappear? Throughout the elementary years, CHA students continue to build upon the STEM concepts with expanded exploratory opportunities to invent, hypothesize, create, and demonstrate. They do an exceptional job in investigative teams and as individual scientists!
Middle school is a time for STEM to ramp up in preparation for high school and the advanced sciences. Sixth grade kicks off with a BLAST as students engineer and launch rockets as part of studying God’s design of the universe and space. Later, they use coding skills to create a light show and demonstrate their knowledge of electrical circuits and technology. This project serves as a Christmas Light Show extravaganza to celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ! Seventh graders begin the year studying God’s creation of Life. Beginning the year in Genesis, their first project tells the story of Creation through a design using a medium to converge faith and how life began. Seventh graders also explore the wonders of the human body and how the Lord knit together a temple for the Holy Spirit in each person. Activities that spur the most excitement in seventh grade are the dissections. Students examine a pig heart, chicken wing and frog to learn the wonders of life. The students also design a prosthetic arm and end the year by designing an irrigation system to water a garden! Eighth graders are preparing for high school by studying chemistry and physics. They see the organization of God’s world in the laws and formulas found in the physical studies. Students make a rainbow in an early unit to deepen their knowledge of reactions between acids and bases. As the year progresses, they design a catapult launching tennis balls to demonstrate understanding of simple machine. They end the year by studying molecules and design an experiment to analyze the effects of microwave technology and water molecules. As CHA students explore the wonders of science from a STEM approach, it is easy to not only recognize God’s presence around us, but put to work His gifts of creativity and ingenuity in our daily lives. cha partners with ktis
O
n the evening of Friday, October 7, Chapel Hill Academy partnered with KTIS for the Priceless Tour featuring For King & Country with special guests Jordan Feliz and KB. The partnership began several months earlier with KTIS Radio (98.5 FM) promoting Chapel Hill Academy on-air leading up to the concert, giving CHA the opportunity to get its name out to hundreds of thousands of listeners. As part of the partnership and to help promote our school, CHA was given access to some valuable resources such as VIP tickets to the concert, admissions and photo booths at the concert, and an opportunity to get a couple of marching snare drums autographed for a giveaway and auction at the CHA Gala. One blessed CHA family was chosen, as part of an admissions referral promotional drawing, to win the VIP tickets which included a meet & greet backstage with For King & Country!

Over 4,200 people attended the sold out concert and CHA staff and family volunteers were out in full force sharing our school with them! Many attendees visited the CHA booth to get their photo taken at the CHA photo booth, register to win a For King & Country autographed marching snare drum, pick up a CHA light-up bracelet, and learn about Christian education opportunities at Chapel Hill Academy. It was a fantastic night for us as we had fun sharing what makes Chapel Hill Academy a special place with all the attendees!

music program Grandparents Day The halls of Chapel Hill Academy are alive with the sounds of students singing in their preparation for concerts and programs. Grandparents Day on October 7th was a tremendous success! The Jr. Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes sang the song “At Gramma’s House” to everyone’s enjoyment. Grades 1 – 5 prepared and performed a medley of “We Believe” (by the Newsboys) and “This Little Light of Mine.” As they processed in, with candles in hand, the visual spectacle was matched only by the uplifting sound of their incredible voices praising God! The middle school students combined to sing a riveting gospel number entitled “He Never Failed Me Yet.” The 6th – 8th graders were so excited by this introduction to gospel music that they will be singing a gospel number, “Can You Hear the Angels,” for our Christmas Chapel performance in December. Guest Conductor We were privileged to have Mr. Curtis Kettler, choral director at Southwest Christian High School, guest teach 7th and 8th grade choir classes on November 15th. The students had the opportunity to rehearse their Christmas pieces with him and receive his professional critique and perspective. We are thankful for this unique opportunity to strive for excellence in our singing for God’s glory! Worship Arts Chapel Hill has been blessed with a group of servant-hearted students leading worship music on three separate worship teams. These middle school students are singing and playing their instruments in chapel on Wednesday mornings and during their practices on Monday and Tuesday advisory. In our praying, we ask God to help us be servant leaders and perform for His glory. We are very blessed to have this opportunity to worship God through music! 16 | CHA Magazine
christmas at cha Christmas Musical The Chapel Hill Christmas Musical for this year is The Power of the King and will be performed, December 15 at 10:00am and 6:45pm, in the auditorium. The Power of the King takes us back to the groovy 1970’s where we find the cast of characters working at a radio station named K-I-N-G. A mighty blizzard sets in on Christmas Eve and the station must enlist the help of a traveling choir to produce their broadcast of the Christmas story. The 4th grade students will be featured in singing solos, speaking parts, scripture narration, and dance solos. First through third grade will be featured as the traveling children’s choir in the story. As per tradition, our Kindergarten classes will be blessing us with their presentation of the nativity scene during the production. In addition, we are excited to be adding Jr. Kindergarten to our lineup as they present some of their favorite Christmas songs before the production that evening. Feel free to come in your favorite old leisure suit or go go boots - you’ll fit right in with our performers!
Christmas Chapel Christmas Chapel will take place December 22 at 2:15 pm and will showcase the 5th-8th grade choirs singing sacred Christmas music. Be sure to attend this concert presented by such an extraordinary group of singers. This event is not to be missed and will feature “Carol of the Bells” (7th & 8th), “All is Well” (5th & 6th), and the combined choirs singing “Can You Hear the Angels” and a medley of carols entitled “Tidings of Joy!” In addition to the choirs of 5th – 8th grade, the Chapel Hill Band will be performing some of their Christmas offerings as well.

alumni news It was our privilege to welcome a very special group of alumni teachers, staff, and parents on campus this past September. Having met during the early years of Chapel Hill Academy, a bond of friendship was formed among these families. As children graduated and they moved on from CHA, the ladies maintained their friendship and began getting together yearly to reconnect. This fall marked the 34th year of their annual “reunion weekend” which they enjoyed together in Stillwater. We are grateful for the sacrificial service to Chapel Hill Academy and for the legacy they have established. athletics
P
articipating on an athletic team at Chapel Hill Academy allows students to participate with their friends in a safe and encouraging environment. It is exciting to witness their development as they desire to work hard and honor God through their sport. CHA teams all had successful fall seasons again this year. The 5th/6th grade soccer team ended their season undefeated with a final record of 8-0. Similarly, the 7th/8th grade soccer team had had a successful season with an 8-2 record and 2nd place in their final tournament. The athletes played hard, worked together, and demonstrated positive team spirit. Throughout the season, parents commonly shared how the wonderful coaches made the season extremely enjoyable for their kids! Volleyball continues to be a very popular sport at CHA, and this year is no exception! In grades 4-8, our girls participated on one of the six teams representing CHA in the SSYO league. Each team worked hard and showed great improvement. Congratulations to the 5th grade girls who took 1st place in their tournament this season! CHA is blessed with excellent, godly coaches who train our athletes spiritually and physically through sports. We are setting our standards very high for our students again this year when it comes to character development. A primary goal is that CHA athletes will be a light in the community as we compete against other schools in our league. We strive to help them gain a better understanding of their purpose and what God desires for them by teaching the G.L.O.R.I.F.Y curriculum (Godly Lessons On Reflecting Integrity For Youth). This fall, coaches focused on four character traits through G.L.O.R.I.F.Y. and will continue with six more during the winter basketball season. It is a blessing to see these character traits instilled in our students as they represent Christ through athletics each season!

ast winter, CHA kicked off Spirit Week with the Biggest, Baddest CHA Rally! The event was a fun-filled family night where the CHA community had a great time while showing their school spirit. The event was such a hit that numerous requests poured in to make it an annual event. Back this year by popular demand, this year’s Biggest, Baddest CHA Rally will take place on Friday, January 20, 2017. The goal is to make it bigger and ‘badder’ than ever! Attire for the evening will certainly be the focus once again this year as families will be competing to claim the title, “Most School Spirit.” Evening festivities will include dinner, fun activities, contests for kids of all ages, a Pep Rally led by Max the Cougar, and the ever popular student-versusparent/teacher basketball games. This is a night that CHA families won’t want to miss! The Biggest Baddest Rally is intended to launch the 2017 Spirit Week (January 23-27) which lands just about the time a little fun is needed during the cold winter months. Themed dress up days and “Pack the Gym Nights” are planned by our 8th graders who gain leadership experience while with middle school teachers to ensure a fun and lively week for the school community!
Please mark your calendars for Spirit Week Events:
