Successful turnout at Chamber Business Expo

B

By: Summer Sigritz usinesses throughout Tooele County gathered on September 14th for the Business Expo at the Tooele City Park to promote their line of work as well as provide a pleasurable experience for the community. The event was sponsored by the Tooele County

Chamber of Commerce and Mountain America Credit Union and several other local businesses. Starting at four in the evening, local businesses such as Sports Depot, to big corporations like Wal-Mart set up tents to display and advertise what they do. Every table was adorned with baskets

of treats to entice the “expogoers”, as well as a cotton candy stand, games, and a feast from the Taste of Tooele County. Tooele County has much to offer when it comes to local businesses and services. From child development to sign makers; every tent had something of interest. Com-

munity Nursing Services, a home health and hospice care facility, helps people with little to no money for grants, charitable care, as well as end of life care. On the other hand, DDI Vantage Early Head start serves low-income or pregnant individuals to provide “comprehensive education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services.” Places like these have contributed to Tooele in a positive way economically, as well as emotionally. The community can strive further and focus on a better life. The Tooele County Democrats displayed their efforts in their current attempt to “Save the Stockton Sandbar.” By making people more aware of the possible destructions in Stockton, the democrats may be able to stop the zoning changes from turning the unique sand bar into a gravel pit. When asked what their views were on buying locally, the activities chair, Hazel Reed, stated, “We try to buy locally as much as possible.” This leads us to another event held at the business expo.

There were a couple of things about this election that told me that you, as the voters, are engaged: 1) Many voters went onto the Clerk’s website to check the bio’s of their candidates. I know this because I was told that when they tried to get onto the website, they were unable to access it because too many people were accessing it. How exciting! By the way, the County IT Department has fixed that problem; 2) Many voters in Tooele City took advantage of the Vote Centers. They went to a polling locations that was different than their assigned location to vote. Great!; 3) People said they had forgotten to vote until they saw the “Vote Today” signs located around the cities. That makes the effort of putting them up the night before the election and taking them down election night worth the trouble! Turn around time between Municipal Primary’s and Municipal General Elections is very short. We have already finalized the ballots for the General Election and have ordered the by-mail ballots from the printer. Soon you will begin to see candidate signs going up again and reminders about Early Voting being published. So enjoy the short respite, then get geared up to research, listen to campaign speeches and of course VOTE in the General Election, November 8, 2011!

Expo Continued from page 1 Come Together is a pact between local businesses and people within the community to help Tooele’s economy, as well as the education system, by purchasing items from local companies and stores. Members from the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce, as well as other important additions to our town, like the mayor of Tooele, gathered on the stage to sign a pledge to the community to buy locally. This was a momentous day for many people in Tooele County, as everyone is constantly struggling to maintain a living. Residents in the community can now look forward and know that their local businesses will be supported more than before. By the end of the promotions and festivities, businesses were able to show off their spunk, open some wallets, and receive the recognition they deserved. Tooele County is growing into a bigger and better place where many more positive adjustments are being made; the Business Expo supported just that. Summer Sigritz is a student at Stansbury High School and is currently working with the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce as an intern.
