Note of Thanks to Tooele I would like to thank the people of Tooele and the surrounding communities for being such wonderful hosts while my Army Reserve unit conducted two weeks of training at the Tooele Army Depot starting June 25. Any time our soldiers went into town they were treated with respect and dignity. Parents encouraged their children to come up to us and say thanks. Walmart and Walgreens gave us donations of bottled water and treats. The movie theater gave us discounted tickets and one wonderful individual gave us $100 to pay for our supper one night. The people that worked at the depot were some of the nicest people I have ever met. A lot of communities say they are patriotic and support the troops, but the people of Tooele quietly proved it. Grantsville Elementary: Ribbon Cutting

The ribbon cutting ceremony was held on August 18, 2011 with a program including remarks from Scott Bryan, Tooele County School District Board President; Karen Nelson, Board Member; Dennis Cecchini, MHTN Architects and Terry L. Linares, Tooele County School District Superintendent. Mark Hutchins, Grantsville Seminary Principal, dedicated the building. The Grantsville Children’s choir, BK Vocal Company, entertained the crowd with their beautiful voices! Grantsville City Fire Department presented the flag and led the audience in the pledge of allegiance. The Tooele County Chamber of Commerce was honored to have been a part of the celebration.

Some years we would get the names of 2 or 3 three families from the Children’s Justice Center that needed help or other years from direct contact with families that we knew right in our school that couldn’t afford to make a memorable Christmas for their kids. It’s really a great feeling to help. For many years on Thanksgiving, my family and I served food at a soup kitchen. It really does your soul good to help others”. Holbrook’s son, Kyle, owns the store next to her salon, Impulse Clothing & Accessories. Together they are the largest sponsor of the upcoming MX For a Cure in September. D’Lux Tan & Body Therapy truly believes in giving back to the community and has donated to many causes including Strikers Softball of Grantsville, Ophir Days, Oquirrh Hills Ladies Golf Memorial Tournament and Grandmothers Tournament, Tooele County Domestic Violence Coalition, the Primary Children’s Medical Center 4th Annual Charity Golf Tournament, as well as many of the local school PTA’s. Type1Racing is an organization that Holbrook and her family are heavily involved in too. Type1Racing is a non profit group spearheaded here in Tooele by a local family, Shawn, Judi, Gabrielle and Riley Jensen. Riley, a 13 year old boy was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in June of 2008. While still in the hospital, Riley decided that he wanted to be able to bring hope to other kids with Type 1 Diabetes. As a huge motocross fan and rider, Riley was determined to show himself as well as others that obstacles can be overcome, and that if you believe in

yourself, you can make things happen. His dream has turned into Tooele County’s 3rd Annual MX For a Cure. On September 9th and 10th at Deseret Peak, riders from across the Rocky Mountain West will converge to show their support as well as their love of motocross. “Jim & Melyssa do so much for so many people” says Judi Jensen, “I really admire them more than they will ever know. Not only are they huge supporters of Type1Racing, Melyssa also has set up an area in her salon for me to display my other passion. I hand-make candles, scented wax, car fresheners, I also make jewelry and watches. It’s a great creative outlet for me when I am not consumed with Type1Racing”. “It’s a lot of hard work to run your own business”, says Holbrook “But its also very rewarding. This tanning salon is a very social and fun place. A lot of our customers come in just for the social aspect of it. Some customers spend as much as 45 minutes just talking to us at the front counter. I think they feel comfortable here. All of us are Smart Tan Certified, which means we have taken 10 - 40 hours of training to be as knowledgeable about indoor tanning, UV rays, sanitation and general health conditions as possible. Tanning is actually a very scientific process. We feel a little bit like doctors sometimes because we are taking care of a person’s largest organ – their skin. We deal with how people look and that is a big deal for people. Our main priority is our customers’ safety and health. We don’t burn people. We want them to look good and feel good.” As you watch customers walk in and out of D’Lux Tan, you can’t help but notice the smiles on their faces. “D’Lux is my refuge” says Kim, a longtime loyal customer “I love coming here. County Commission Update: Remembering 9-11 Written by Wade Mathews, Public Information Officer ost of us living now will remember September 11th, 2001 as our country’s most tragic day. Nearly 3,000 lives were lost on that day when terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners and crashed them into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a Pennsylvania field. The tenth anniversary of those horrific events is almost upon us. Our country hasn’t seen a day like 9/11 since the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, “a date that will live in infamy,” said President Franklin D. Roosevelt. We have never forgotten that day that triggered the United States’ entry into World War II. Some people of our older generation still remember where they were and what they were doing when they first heard of the attack on Pearl Harbor. I hope we will also never forget 9/11, which also launched us into the continuing war on terror. I’m sure you remember where you were when you first heard of the attacks on the Twin Towers. The Tooele County Commissioners took a moment to share their thoughts about 9/11. Here is what Commissioner Colleen Johnson wrote. “I was at home listening to roofers banging on my roof. The phone rang and Bob told me to turn the TV on. Just as I did the second plane hit the twin towers of the World Trade Center. All I could do was stare at the TV in unbelief, things like this don’t happen in America! My thoughts immediately went to my family, and I said a silent prayer of thanks that they were safe, and then a prayer for all those being affected by this horrible event. Then came the reports of a plane hitting the Pentagon and a plane crashing in Pennsylvania. “As I was thinking about this I realized that there are children that will be learning this in their history classes as people of my generation learned of Pearl Harbor, and trying to imagine how such an event could happen. I don’t think there are words to describe the gamut of feelings and emotions that people went through that day and the days to follow. “Never, Never, Never forget or let your families forget what this great nation stands for. We were founded on freedom and today it is just as important as it was then. As horrible and terrifying as the 9-11 attacks were it brought our country and communities together as never before. I was so proud of the way our nation pulled together and stood up for what we believe in. We had a greater appreciation for just how blessed and lucky we are and how good we have it–something that we should never ever take for granted.”

We were on the desert in Juab County and had just hooked up the teams to the wagons when we got the message about the World Trade Center. People were wondering, ‘is this the end of the world’ since America had never been attacked this way before. That’s what was going through people’s minds. No matter how you thought about it, it was a serious event, a disconcerting event. “The decision was made to stay on schedule with the wagon train until we got more information. The attacks never impeded our progress but we kept getting more details about the event as we rolled along. We finished our leg of the journey at the Nevada border. “I think it’s really important that we keep these events on our minds and express our feelings to people who might not remember it, the younger generations, and let them know what we went through at that time, what it was like. We want them to stay vigilant and reduce or eliminate the vulnerabilities that existed then so we don’t have to experience that again.” Commissioner Hurst was unavailable for this article. I also remember exactly what I was doing on 9/11 when I first heard of the attacks. It was the day before Tooele County’s annual Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program exercise. Other Public Affairs Officers and I were going to be meeting with

members of the media to issue them credentials for observing the emergency drill the following day. I was home getting ready for work when I got a phone call from a photographer at Channel 4 News. He asked me if we were still going to be conducting our exercise. When I replied “yes” and asked him “why wouldn’t we?” he excitedly told me about the first plane crash into the World Trade Center. I told him I’d have to get back with him about the exercise. After turning on my TV I watched in utter disbelief as the second plane flew into one of the Twin Towers. I couldn’t believe it was really happening. In remembrance of the tragic events on 9/11, and especially all those who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks, Tooele County Emergency Management will activate the sirens, part of our outdoor warning system, on Sunday morning, September 11th. We plan to activate the sirens at about 9:59 a.m., the time the first World Trade Center tower collapsed. Please don’t be alarmed when you hear the sirens’ “wail” tone, followed by the message “Join Tooele County in remembering the heroes and victims of the 9/11 tragedy.” Please take a moment on the upcoming September 10th to reflect on how 9/11 changed you, your family, and your country. Always remember that tragic day, and as a people remain vigilant against the evils of the world and anyone, foreign or domestic, that will attempt to take away the freedoms and prosperity that are only available in this great country, the United States of America.

Hundreds of Tooele County residents attended the ribbon cutting ceremony and Phase 1 Dedication held on August 17, 2011 for the Saint Marguerite Catholic School and John J. Sullivan Education Center. The Most Rev. Bishop John C. Wester cut the ribbon with help from Reverend Samuel Dinsdale, Pastor, Mr. Bruce Cummings, Bldg, Committee Chair; Mrs. Edwards-Burton, Mrs. Kimberly Thornblad, Rel. Ed. A Boys Dream: TYPE1RACING Written by: Judi Jensen

ooele County is making one boy’s dream come true again…for the 3rd year in a row! Our son, Riley Jensen, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in June ’08. He was ten, and felt the weight of the world on his shoulders. Just four months earlier he was hospitalized for asthma. We struggled with understanding why he had to go through all of this. He was so scared that he wouldn’t be able to ride motocross anymore, which was and still is his passion. He dreamt of being able to ride just like, CJ Higley – one of Deseret Peak’s top riders- one day. Riley thought all hope was lost and worried he wouldn’t be able to ride anymore, let alone race. It would be too much for his body to handle. We couldn’t find the words to console him. It hadn’t sunk in yet that by taking the injections of insulin, counting his carbohydrates, and doing all the things that were now medically necessary, it would make him an even better rider than before. His body would have what it needed to function properly. But to Riley, each shot, or finger prick, just seemed too much. Each seemed to be taking him further and further from his dreams. He couldn’t figure out how all of this could possibly work into his training and riding. The second day in the hospital, a member of the JDRF- Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation- stopped by with a ‘bag of hope’. The ‘bag of hope’ is a custom backpack for each newly diagnosed diabetic, complete with an insulated pouch and many of the new essentials necessary to keep, Riley, and other diabetics, alive. As we looked through even more books, trying to understand all of the new information, we tried to tie altogether all of the new things we were still trying to process, which we’d been taught by the wonderful nurses and doctors at Primary Children’s Hospital, it seemed overwhelming. Things like how to work a blood glucose meter, and how often to check his blood sugars or learning how to give a shot. What should we do when he was hypoglycemic (low blood sugars), or hyperglycemic (high blood sugars)? What to do on sick days, when it’s medically neccessary to call the clinic in order to adjust insulin. When a type 1 diabetic is ‘sick’, they are less sensitive to insulin. Our entire family had to learn how to care for him in very new and different ways. This would forever be a part of his life and ours and we were overwhelmed. How was he still going to be able to ride? Somehow the representative’s words broke through our confusion, frustration and worries. We put everything to the side so as to listen more closely as she explained how ‘normal’ her life was. She explained to us that she did everything she wanted to. Nothing, especially diabetes, held her back. Her words brought relief to us, and turned out to be a message of hope for Riley. After the representative left Riley turned to us, with a smile so bright it seemed to light up the room, and whispered, “I want to do that, I want to bring the hope”. We thought he meant that he wanted to deliver the bags for the JDRF, but his message of hope involved his dirt bike. He wanted to put on a race to raise funds not only for the JDRF, but to raise awareness of type 1 diabetes and show every child that may be sitting at home or in a hospital bed or feeling the weight of the world on their shoulders that there

is hope! They can still achieve all of their dreams and more. From that day on we decided to let diabetes make us all stronger people, and do all that we could to support Riley’s dream. None of us has asked ‘why?’ since that long ago visit. We all wanted to find a way to help as many people as possible as the JDRF representative had done for us. We know Riley brings the hope and shows everyone that dreams do come true, no matter what’s in the way. Every time he rides his dirt bike, after checking his blood of course…he’s our hero. After last years’ race, which raised an incredible amount of money and was featured in a special Utah Gives article by the JDRF in Nov. 2010, our whole family knew then we could do more. Ironically, the day the paper came out Riley was in the ER in diabetic ketoacidosis after a month of extreme illness. His dad ran to the gas station to pick up a copy and after reading it, our family felt we needed to do more. We knew some of the money this community raised for research could have helped another family in the situation we were in that very moment. We could ‘bring the hope’ to so many more kids, right here in Tooele County and Utah. Riley and our family wanted to give back to the community that did so much for us. So on Nov. 7th, 2010 the seed of the dream- forming a non-profit corporation was planted. It only took a few months for the dream of a now 13-year-old boy, to blossom into the nonprofit organization of Type1Racing that Riley dreamed up to help the community that has shown him so much support. TYPE1RACING reaches out to the type 1 diabetic community by providing educational information and assistance (an eventual medical fund to help families in need of life-saving medical supplies, such as insulin, syringes, even batteries for their pumps), athletic opportunities & training -Riley and his sister, Gabrielle are black belts in Tae Kwon Do, and their Master, Brittany Seamons, has volunteered to help teach, along with Riley and Gabrielle, Tae Kwon Do to type 1 diabetics. Some of our TYPE1RACING riders have also volun-

teered to help train type 1 diabetics, to ride and ride well. Jake Mitchell, Riley’s personal motoX trainer is the head of our athletic outreach. He has volunteered to be a “personal trainer” of sorts to type 1 diabetics. We hope this will help the families of type 1 diabetics by taking a little bit of the worry out of things for them because their children will be with people educated in diabetes, and know what to do if there is a problem and how to prevent problems from happening. Our next goal is to raise awareness of type 1 diabetes through sponsoring riders in the motocross community who have been educated in type 1 diabetes, and make Riley’s dream of ‘MX for a Cure… Bringing the HOPE’ a part of motocross racing series throughout the country…After all there is a Walk for a Cure… It takes a community to make this kind of magic happen. The people of Tooele County have all been a part of turning our son’s dreams into realities and ‘bringing the hope’ to so many other children and their families. We, Shawn, Judi, Gabrielle and especially Riley, would like to express our gratitude and thanks to the entire community. You have all reached out to us in so many ways and turned what we thought to be a ‘maybe one day’ dream, into an incredible reality. Lynn Higley, at Deseret Peak Complex, was the first person we contacted, when we realized Riley wasn’t going to take ‘someday’ for an answer anymore. Lynn generously donated his precious time to help us every step of the way to make Tooele County’s first MX for a Cure happen. He even helped us in contacting the Tooele County Commissioners, which was quite intimidating to us. How were we to know that the Tooele County Commissioners would welcome Riley with open arms? We took a few deep breaths full of hope and a colossal step forward by sending them a brief email about Riley’s dream to see if there might be any way they could help us make Riley’s dream come true. The very next day Jerry Hurst called us personally to let us know Tooele County would love to make sure Riley’s dream happened. They have done so for three consecutive years now. What an amazing county we live in! Lynn guided us every step of the way, and on September 12, 2009 the motocross community was there to support a boy they really didn’t even know, yet. D’Lux Tan & Body Therapy and Impulse Clothing owners, Jim, Melyssa & Kyle Holbrook offered support we never dreamed of. The Holbrook family has really embraced Riley’s dream and are a huge reason TYPE1RACING now exists. Our gratitude to all of the Tooele County residents and your countless good deeds, it is never ending. The Steadman family, and Steadman’s Recreation have always been supporters of Riley’s dream. Every year they do something special that really impacts the race, and throughout the year they are always there to cheer Riley on, or find bike parts that no one else can, that “we have to have right now.” Thank you Steadman’s, your supportive words and deeds mean the world to us. We Need Your Help! & Body Therapy

At Grantsville Jr. High School, “failure is not an option” for our students. We work hard to help every student be successful. I am hoping that members of the Chamber can help us by coming to our school and talking about their companies or organizations and what they do. Last year, presenters brought pictures, used video clips, power point presentations, and other visual aides to hold the attention of our students. Some talked about the overall mission of their organization. Others talked about possible jobs and careers. Enrichment presentations need to engage an audience of 300-350, 7th and 8th grade students, ages 12-14, for 55 minutes with a question and answer period built into the presentation. Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 1:30 to 2:30 are the usual days and times for our intervention classes and enrichment activities, however, we are willing to change our schedule, if that is what it takes to make it happen for our teachers and students. he Utah State BMX Championship Series rolled like thunder into Tooele County!! Each BMX track around the state hosts a qualifying event, and Deseret Peak was ready for racin’!! The Deseret Peak BMX Park was bustling with riders from across the state competing for State and Double District points. As riders loaded into the start gate, thoughts of a championships were on their minds... Participants race against others of the same age, skill level, and gender on various size bicycles for individual titles.
