Welcome ‘Selamat Datang’ Langkawi comprises a community of Malaysian fishermen and rice farmers who have lived on the islands for generations. Located off the northwest coast between Phuket and Penang, we are influenced by many cultures. We are a friendly, laid back, multicultural community and we take pride in our island, our religions, our way of life, our food and our knowledge of the jungle and the sea for sourcing natural remedies. We respect our neighbors and love our children who enjoy the freedom of a peaceful and safe island. The needy are cared for by village communities and government agencies. We strive to sustain the ecology of our beautiful island through good stewardship and sustainable practices. Throughout Langkawi you will be greeted by the friendly smiles of people who have a genuine interest in all visitors and welcome the opportunity for a chat and a laugh. We look forward to meeting you and sharing our island with you.

Ferry services from Satun Thailand takes about an hour.

Getting Around Being a small island, Langkawi is relatively easy to travel around. In Malaysia, cars are driven on the left side of the road. Direction signs are in English as well as Bahasa Malaysia but many road signs are in Bahasa so it useful to check out the translations. Driving is quite relaxed although careful driving, especially in the rural areas is advised.

Taxis

Taxis are readily available and reception staff in resorts can make bookings for you. The taxis work on a fixed price basis and we do recommend you check the rate card when your fare is quoted. Some taxi drivers speak better English than others and they can prove to be very useful for round island trips as they can identify many points of interest. Taxis can be hired from the airport, all hotels and from major attractions.

Cars for Hire

Roads in Langkawi are well signposted and in good condition so hiring a car for a selfdrive adventure is a good option. You will need to watch out for motorbike riders and the occasional water buffalo that may wander onto the road. It is recommended that you use a licensed and insured car rental company to prevent any unpleasant incidents in the event of an accident.

For those who want to discover more, there are many attractions and adventures activities. The main island covers an area of 478km2 and much of this remains untouched and covered in tropical rainforest. Most of the 150,000 islanders are farming and fisher folk who lead an unhurried life. The main town of Kuah is also the terminal for incoming ferries and includes many duty-free stores, services, facilities and restaurants. Food is an integral part of Malaysia, especially in Langkawi where visitors can experience Malay, Chinese, Indian, Thai and international cuisines. Discover the best local food at night markets and stalls. Try charcoal-grilled satay, spicy curries or home-cooked banana fritters. Relax after dark at one of the many candlelit restaurants, whether local or western, for a wonderfully fresh meal. Langkawi offers a range of activities – water sports are popular with snorkeling, diving, cruising, yachting and fishing available. Dusky-Leaf Monkey Butterfly Lizards

It’s a Jungle Out There Somewhere, depending upon the time of day, on or around one of the 99 Langkawi Islands, it’s possible to observe a pod of Indo Pacific Humpack Dolphins swimming, Brahminy Kites soaring above, Oriental Pied Hornbills swooping through rainforests, Butterfly Lizards scurrying from their sandy burrows, Colugos gliding amongst the forest, monkeys swinging through the trees, elongated mangrove seeds falling into the mudflats or water cascading from waterfalls protruding from ancient rock formations. Some call it nature tourism, other ecotourism. On Langkawi, we see it as the passing of time – a process that has been ongoing for millions of years and we like it just as it is. Share with us Langkawi’s many natural features that have helped sustain our people for centuries. Work with us so that all our children can continue to enjoy Langkawi’s amazing natural attractions.

Langkawi’s Natural Assets Langkawi is a complex island group that is difficult to simplify ecologically. There are several main vegetation communities and marine ecosystems. Many Langkawi plant species have closer affinity to those of Thailand than of mainland Malaysia. While much of Langkawi is dominated by limestone, Mount Machingcang is sandstone and Mount Raya, granite. Land and sea caves have formed in the limestone over millions of years and are now home to specially adapted flora and fauna.

7

Limestone Topography Only 0.3% of Malaysian land surface is covered by limestone but this rock type supports 13% of Malaysia’s flowering plants and ferns. Therefore, it is ecologically very important. Karst morphology is the term given to topography which is characterized by jagged edges, caves, cliffs and sea stacks. Langkawi’s many jagged islands and hills are typical examples of this landscape.

Marine Ecosystems Langkawi is situated in the southern Andaman Sea and the waters are important as a marine habitat and a source of income for fisher folk. Attempts are being made to sustainably harvest the fish and to protect the very asset that attracts tourists. Many species live in these waters with some of the more interesting species being the dolphins and Whale Sharks. Whale Sharks are complex, harmless plankton eaters and the biggest fish in the world growing up to 14m in length.

8

Rainforest Malaysian rainforests are the world’s oldest and most complex ecosystems and thrive because of the consistently warm and moist climate. They are commonly called dipterocarp (two-winged seeds) because of the dominant tree type. Explore accessible rainforests at Seven Wells, Mount Raya and the Datai area.

Wetlands and Mangroves The extensive mangroves on Langkawi’s northern and eastern margins are important as fishbreeding grounds and animal habitats. They also protect the foreshore from erosion. In addition, paddy fields are home to specialized fauna. The best time to appreciate the amazing greenness of the young plants is from August to September.

9

White Meranti – Gerutu Forest Not all trees in Langkawi are evergreen – some are semi-deciduous which means they shed their leaves especially during the drier months from December to March. The leaves turn yellow and fall off. Opening visitors’ eyes to Langkawi’s natural features is done in many different ways by our community. It’s part of our folklore, family values and education. Many of our people, from boatmen to taxi drivers to nature guides, are eager to show guests Langkawi’s natural features. Bookings for activities can be made at most resort recreation desks. Many local island guides support the values of the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) in their efforts to conserve the island’s natural assets.

Geology And Geopark The island’s geology is very important in explaining the various vegetation communities found in Langkawi. Most of the outer islands are limestone while the main island comprises ancient sandstone and granite intrusions. Langkawi was acorded the Global Geopark status on June 1st 2007 became Malaysia’s first geopark covering an area of 478km2. The park includes mountainous peaks, limestone caves, suspended lakes, vertical sea walls as well as the vegetation. www.langkawigoepark.com.my A. Mount Machincang The mountain is one of the oldest rock formations in South East Asia. To see it, take an exhilarating ride on the Langkawi Cable Car across the forest canopy and up the mountain’s escarpment to the summit at 713m. Observe 550 million year old sandstone outcrops, the mountain flora and birdlife. Look out for the world’s smallest orchid as well as pitcher plants. There are several walks between stations to allow a closer look at the rocks and vegetation.

25

B. Mount Raya Langkawi’s highest peak at 880m is reached via a winding 13km road passing through fascinating forests supporting a wide variety of fauna. Hornbills and bird of prey are common sights. Stop at the parking bays and observe the forest from the canopy level. Look, listen and let the wildlife come to you. The mountain is granitic batholiths formed 230 million years ago, deep beneath the earth’s surface. Plate tectonics have exposed it to the surface. C. Limestone Coast The north, northeast coast and island as far down as Tuba Island are made of limestone, approximately 400 million years old. Many endemic plants are found here and tall ‘palm-like’ (in appearance only) plants called cycads grow from within cracks in the limestone. The outer islands are the best for seeing both the rocks and limestone vegetation. Rocky outcrops form an amazing sight especially along the uninhabited northern and eastern coastlines. Visitors need to hire a boat from Tanjung Rhu, Kilim or Kuah to explore these areas. The legendary Lake of the Pregnant Maiden (Tasik Dayang Bunting) is a beautiful freshwater lake located on limestone within the rainforest. It is Langkawi’s largest lake and is separated from the sea by a thin rock wall. Walk through the forests and paddle or swim in the lake.

26

Mangroves Mangroves are best seen in several forest reserves – Ayer Hangat River, Kilim River, Kisap River and the Tuba Straits between Tuba Island and Dayang Bunting. Mangroves are important as a nursery for fish and they also provide habitats for birdlife, insects, reptiles and primates. Langkawi mangroves are the only ones in Malaysia that are bedded in limestone. Daily cruises in small boats enable close contact with this fascinating vegetation and the birds and animals it supports. Tours include visits to limestone caves and the opportunity to see raptors feeding on marine life. Book through hotel recreation desks, or visit the jetties at Tanjung Rhu and Kilim River (for Kilim River mangrove) and the Kuah Jetty for the Tuba Straits mangrove.

Rainforest Malaysia has the world’s oldest unchanged rainforest. Within Langkawi there are several areas of interest, but the guidance of a naturalist who knows the trails and the flora and fauna is recommended. i. Foothills of Mount Machingcang – Datai Side, Seven Wells & Peak of Machingcang. ii. Mount Raya iii. Lubuk Semilang.

27

Waterfalls A. Seven Wells – Telaga Tujuh Discover this beautiful series of cascades and pools deep within the forested area at the southern foothills of Mount Machingcang. The trail here is steep and passes through mature rainforest. Beware of cheeky monkeys. Continue deeper into the forest, to swim in cool mountain pools. Exercise caution around the waterfall at the water’s edge as the rocks are very slippery.

B. Temurun Waterfall The falls are located just off the road to Datai Bay in a scenic rainforest setting. There is a very short walk in to see Langkawi’s tallest waterfall. It is best to view the falls during the rainy season.

28

Shopping Langkawi is duty free so prices of most products are very competitive, and while mostly fixed, there’s no harm in bargaining. While Langkawi does not offer the latest Paris fashions, the range of goods is extensive – cameras, electrical items, clothing, beverages and perfumes. Most shop are in Kuah Town Centre like Jetty Point Complex, Langkawi Plaza, Langkawi Parade and Langkawi Fair.
