FOR THOSE FAMILIAR with the hustle and bustle of the downtown Canton Arts District, a pillar of creativity and inclusivity is uncovered within Silo Arts & Meadow Studio. Embracing, encouraging, and nurturing adults with artistic aspirations, Silo serves as a haven for all outsider artists driven by an innate passion to create. Here, artistic expression knows no bounds, free from the constraints of traditional schooling or societal norms. Instead, Silo Arts & Meadow Studio provides a supportive environment where artists are empowered to explore their talents and showcase their unique perspectives to the world.
Creativity Is A Way of Life
At Silo Arts & Meadow Studio, fostering the creative spirit is not just a mission—it’s a way of life. With dedicated studio spaces, professional guidance, and access to a myriad of materials, artists are equipped with the tools they need to unleash their imagination. Professional artists on the team offer personalized instruction, ensuring that each artist receives tailored support to develop their skills and explore new techniques.
“We support our artists by providing them with their own workspace,” says Todd Donnelly from Silo. “They have the physical necessities, such as workspace/desk, storage, and materials needed to create in their own unique methods.”
But beyond the physical act of creating, Silo cultivates a sense of community and camaraderie among its artists, fostering an environment where collaboration flourishes, ideas are shared, and friendships are formed.
“We have two professional artists on our team that work with our artists multiple days a week, one-on-one, to make sure the instruction they are receiving is specific to their art,” continues Todd. “For example, if an artist is interested in air brushing, we have an artist on our team that can work with that Silo artist to tutor them in that specific new skill.”
An Empowering Platform for Silo Artists
Inclusive in serving individuals within the special needs community, Silo plays a vital role in promoting empowerment and self-expression. Transforming Challenges Into Triumphs, One Brushstroke at a Time
Yet, amidst the triumphs, Silo also faces its share of challenges. For many artists, self-confidence and communication skills may initially pose barriers to their creative journey. However, through patience, encouragement, and unwavering support, Silo witnesses remarkable transformations as artists blossom and discover newfound confidence in their abilities. By recognizing the potential in every individual and providing a nurturing environment for growth, Silo continues to break down barriers and inspire hope within the special needs community.
“Half of Silo Art’s team is made up of yoga teachers,” said Kat Francis who is Silo’s Visual Arts Director. “This helps make Silo special as we put comfort, peace, and meditation on a pedestal. Our team has the skills and training to encourage relaxation of the mind, how to put mental health first by tuning into your subconscious, and the ability to calm the mind.” Their approach has helped two incredible artists succeed in having a confident voice. The first: is a timid artist who didn’t speak very much at the beginning. Now, she’s confident, proud, and loves to share her self-portraits of strong female characters. Another artist, who is technically nonverbal, is now also able to share his stories, like a comic book full of his own thoughts and feelings. Without Silo Arts & Meadow Studio, we wouldn’t get to witness it!
