3. Feel the Influence of Cherokee Located in the heart of Western North Carolina, Cherokee is a culture, a people and a sovereign nation. After just one visit, you’ll look at things a little differently. It might happen on a mud-spattering romp through the nearby Great Smoky Mountains, while hearing the creation legend in the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, or after watching something as profound as the outdoor drama “Unto These Hills.” Suddenly, you’re a little more in tune with the natural world, while having a better understanding of your own. And you’ll certainly have fun. See how the Cherokee lived two and a half centuries ago at the Oconaluftee Indian Village, an authentic working village with dwellings, residents and artisans right out of the 1760s. How will Cherokee affect you? Plan. Play. Visit. And discover at: www.visitcherokeenc.com 4. There are many great spots, but among the most popular are Deep Creek outside Bryson City, the Oconaluftee River in Cherokee, several spots along the Tuckasegee River from Cullowhee to Dillsboro and the Little Tennessee River in Franklin. No tube? No worries. All four rivers have companies to outfit you with a tube. And if standing while floating is more your thing, try the increasingly popular paddleboarding. Zip Lining If you’ve taken the time to see the forest from the trails, perhaps it’s time to get a bird’s-eye view. Four popular spots are the Nantahala Outdoor Center, the Wildwater Nantahala Gorge Adventure Center in Wesser, the Highlands Aerial Park at Scaly Mountain, and Sapphire Valley Resort in Sapphire. Waterfall Byway Strangely powerful or eerily tranquil, waterfalls do have a way of casting a spell. If you happen to be a fan, this is your byway. Winding 98 miles and featuring more than 200 distinct waterfalls, it begins at U.S. 64’s intersection with NC 215. Where it ends is likely somewhere far deeper within you. 98 miles • 3.5 hours Clay, Jackson, Macon and Transylvania counties
2
Nantahala Byway The Cherokee used “Nantahala” to mean “Land of the Noonday Sun.” Why noonday? Well, likely for the steep walls that frame the Nantahala Gorge, an impressive site you’ll tour as part of this swirling byway. Nearby, the Nantahala River has become legendary for its whitewater. Just depart from Marble, head east and don’t stop until you pass Wesser. 43 miles • 1.5 hours Cherokee, Graham, Jackson and Swain counties
3
Cherohala Skyway Esquire magazine said, “It’s like driving through a car commercial.” Connecting the Cherokee National Forest to the Nantahala National Forest, this clean, smooth highway encourages you to open up your sports car or pause your RV for a sandwich and the beautiful sights. And the skyway vs. byway bit? Once you drive it, you’ll understand. 20 miles • 45 minutes • Graham County

5
Whitewater Way Quick: You have three guesses as to what you’ll encounter on this scenic byway. The aptly named Whitewater Way is named for Whitewater Falls, which is the highest waterfall east of the Rockies. Take NC 281 and hike the many trails leading to spectacular rushing water. Bathroom breaks are a must. 9 miles • 20 minutes Transylvania and Jackson counties

NATIONAL PARKS
Great Smoky Mountains National Park Straddling North Carolina and Tennessee, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park encompasses over half-a-million acres, making it the largest national park in the East. It has more species of plants, animals and insects than anywhere else in the world, rivaling even the rainforests. For panoramic views, tumbling mountain streams, weathered historic buildings and uninterrupted forest stretching to the horizon, just hop in your car and drive through the park. If you need to stretch your legs, park and hike on one of the more than 900 miles of trails in the park. Locals agree that the North Carolina side of the park is considered more pristine and tranquil and is less heavily used than the Tennessee side. So if you’re looking for a more off-thebeaten-path experience, you’re in the right place. Blue Ridge Parkway The most visited unit of the National Park System, the Blue Ridge Parkway is known for its stunning views, abundant hiking trails, picnic areas, campsites and informational exhibits. Named “America’s Favorite Drive,” the Parkway offers 469 miles connecting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina to the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and is definitely worth the trip. With hiking trails, campsites and countless recreational opportunities found along this National Scenic Byway, there are plenty of opportunities to get out and experience the world’s most diverse display of flora and fauna. Find out more at blueridgeparkway.org The folkways of Appalachia Mingus Mill, a historic gristmill built in 1886, uses a water-powered turbine instead of a waterwheel to power all of its machinery. Conveniently located just off of U.S. Highway 441 through Great Smoky Mountains National Park, it’s a living piece of Smoky Mountain history. Visitors can purchase corn meal and other mill-related items while seeing how a real mill works. Just a half mile down the road at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center, you’ll find The Mountain Farm Museum. A living museum preserving the legacy of the hardy settlers who lived on what is now Great Smoky Mountains National Park, it hosts a variety of events throughout the year.

NATIONAL FORESTS
Nantahala National Forest Legend has it that sunlight can only reach the floors of the rich cove forests of Nantahala National Forest, or touch the ribbons of water that course through the gorges, at noon when the sun is directly overhead. Created in 1920, the wild and scenic Nantahala National Forest is the largest of the four national forests in North Carolina, covering just over half-a-million acres. There are more than 27,000 acres of designated wilderness found in its hills, including Ellicott Rock, Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock and the Southern Nantahala Wilderness. If you’re craving adventure in nature, the Nantahala National Forest is renowned for whitewater rafting, mountain biking, camping and hiking. World-renowned trails including The Appalachian Trail, Bartram’s Trail and the Mountains-To-Sea Trail all meander through the forest. And with more than 600 miles of trails, there are plenty of day hikes and short strolls to get you moving. Find out more at www.fs.fed.us Pisgah National Forest The Pisgah National Forest began as a part of George Vanderbilt’s private estate. The area west of Vanderbilt’s Asheville Biltmore Estate was sold to the federal government after his death in 1914 and became the first tracts of the now half-million-acre Pisgah National Forest. Today, Pisgah is home to the Shining Rock Wilderness Area, Max Patch, the Harmon Den Bear Preserve, The Cradle of Forestry and Sliding Rock. www.fs.fed.us

MOUNTAIN BIKING It’s hard not to notice that mountain biking has become one of the fastest growing recreational activities in the Smokies. A quick drive down the highway and you’ll see vehicles with mountain bikes strapped on zoom by on the way to hit the trails. For those outdoor enthusiasts looking to feel a rush while enjoying nature, the Smokies contain some of the best bike trails anywhere.
Tsali Recreation Area Here, you’ll find the granddaddy of Western North Carolina mountain biking, boasting 40 miles of trails on four loops. It’s rated as one of the top 10 places to ride in the U.S. With fast, hard-packed single track trails, you can’t go wrong with any of the loops in Tsali Recreation Area. Off NC 28 past Bryson City (or, if coming from Robbinsville, NC 143 until you reach NC 28), go east. Entrance on north side of NC 28, well-marked. The Santeetlah Lake Trail A 15-mile trail open to mountain bikes, horses and hikers. The trail follows a number of open and gated Forest Service roads with a short portion of single track. Large sections of the trail hug the shoreline of Lake Santeetlah offering beautiful mountain lake views. The primary trailhead is located at the intersection of NC 143 (NC 1127) and Snowbird Road. Fontana Village Trails The individual trails vary widely in their width, steepness and technical difficulty. Describing one distinct route here is impossible because this network of trails crisscrosses all around the village and totals about 20 miles. While traveling west on U.S. Highway 74, take a right onto Highway 28 towards Almond. Follow Highway 28 for about 22.5 miles, and then take a left into Fontana Village Resort. Jackrabbit Mountain Located next to the huge Jackrabbit Campground at Lake Chatuge, this 14-mile trail system is gaining popularity fast. Mostly flat with rolling dips and berms and just a few technical areas. At Lake Chatuge get on NC 175, turn onto Jackrabbit Road, signed parking area on left. 24

Easy Moderate Difficult Bike Trail Horse Trail Fishing Handicap-Accessible
Panthertown Valley Nearly 30 miles of trails branch off from the area’s old main roads, 21 of which are open to bikes. And the roads are becoming fun single- and double-track in many places. Shorter and longer loop options are available from either parking area. A few of the more popular destinations within the valley (such as Greenland Creek, Schoolhouse, Granny Burrell, and Wilderness Falls) are accessible by short sections of hiking-only trails, but are worth the diversion. Follow U.S. 64 East to Cashiers. Turn onto NC 281. Turn left onto Cold Mountain Road and proceed just under 6 miles. At a sharp left turn, a sign will indicate the Panthertown parking is just ahead. Western Carolina University Trail Recently opened 6.6 miles of single track across the street from main WCU campus in Cullowhee. Challenging but relatively short. The trail system has two trailheads. One is located near the softball field and picnic area on WCU main campus, east of NC 107. Trail users then travel through the pedestrian tunnel under 107 and access the trail on NCCAT property. The second trailhead is located at the parking lot of the Health and Human Sciences building. Hanging Dog Campground Area The Ramsey Bluff Bike Trail System is located at the Hanging Dog Campground area, and offers underutilized adventure in mountain biking. The eight-mile labyrinth of trails is a group of connected loops, allowing an interesting variety of combinations for repeat visitors to explore. The trail difficulty ranges from easy to moderate and range from 1500 feet to 1900 feet in elevation. Hanging Dog is on Hiwassee Lake in the Nantahala National Forest, five miles northwest of Murphy, NC.

DON’T JUST EXPERIENCE A WEEKEND, EXPLORE ONE ON THE SMOKY MOUNTAIN
At the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains, the Cheoah River, Little Tennessee River, Nantahala River, Oconaluftee River and Tuckasegee River all flow through the North Carolina Smokies and into Fontana Lake, creating a spectacular “Blueways Trail” throughout the region. These five spectacular rivers, the lakes along the way and their watersheds encompass the Nantahala National Forest and two National Park units, creating the largest outdoor
C HEOAH RIVER
The Cheoah River is located in the extreme southwestern corner of North Carolina, near Robbinsville. Twenty miles long, the Cheoah is one of the most physically demanding rivers in the world. On release days, sections of the Cheoah offer challenging Class IV and V rapids, the perfect challenge for the most adventurous paddlers. With its unique features and exciting rapids, paddlers agree that the Cheoah will become one of the crown jewels of the whitewater world. Visit https://renewableops.brookfield.com/ en/Presence/North-America/Recreation-andSafety/Smoky-Mountain-Hydro/Recreationand-Flow/Santeetlah to see the most up-todate release schedules.
NANTA HA LA RIVER
26
The Nantahala offers river rafting and kayaking through family-friendly rapids and is also a popular spot for the amateur and Olympic paddler. As one of America’s most popular whitewater runs, it features eight miles of Class II rapids before splashing through the exciting Class III whitewater of Nantahala Falls. The Nantahala is also recognized as one of the area’s premier trout streams. So good, in fact, that Trout Unlimited included it on their list of the Top 100 Trout Streams in the U.S.

recreation areas in the Southeastern United States. These rivers, known as the Great Rivers and Great Lakes of the Great Smokies, offer fishing, canoeing, kayaking, tubing and a host of recreational opportunities, so it’s no surprise that it’s also one of the most visited areas. Grab a copy of the Blueways map from the Smoky Mountain Host Visitor Center or online at smokymountainblueways.com
TUCKASEGEE RIVER
LA KE GLEN VILLE
The Tuckasegee, known as the “Tuck,” originates in Jackson County and runs through Cullowhee, Webster, Dillsboro and Bryson City on its way to Fontana Lake. A popular river for tubing, floating, canoeing, rafting and kayaking, it’s best known for fishing. With many areas as wide as many western rivers, the Tuck offers plenty of room for back casting. It’s such a popular area for fishing the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce produced its own fly-fishing map for the Tuck. If you’re looking for an exhilarating way to experience fly-fishing, make sure to check out a float trip on the Tuck. The highest-elevation lake east of the Mississippi, Lake Glenville, is a reservoir located eight miles from Cashiers, North Carolina. Like the mountains that meet its shore, the lake’s bottom plunges steeply to eighty feet or more, creating one of our deepest lakes. With over twenty-six miles of pristine shoreline, Lake Glenville’s waters have become a tourist destination for kayakers, canoe paddlers, water-skiers and pleasure-boat enthusiasts. Encompassing 1,450 acres and surrounded by cliff sides, it’s the perfect cool retreat for the Southeast’s hot summers. Great Smokies North Carolina

LA KE SANTEETLAH
L I TTLE T E NNESSEE RIVER
OCONALUFTEE RIVER
28
Only an eight-mile hike from the Appalachian Trail, the Santeetlah Lake is perfect for rustic outdoor enthusiasts. More than fifty primitive campsites are scattered around the lake and require neither permits nor fees. The lake is home to a variety of fish including smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, bream and lake trout, so catching dinner shouldn’t be a problem. With seventy-six miles of shoreline and over two hundred miles of hiking trails in the Cheoah District, working up an appetite shouldn’t be a problem, either. The Little Tennessee and its immediate watershed comprise one of the richest archaeological areas in the Southeastern U.S. The Little Tennessee drains portions of three national forests—Chattahoochee, Nantahala and Cherokee, and provides the southwestern boundary of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Known to avid fisherman for its smallmouth bass, this river is a popular spot for canoeing, fishing and floating. Travelers and locals alike enjoy the town of Franklin’s Little Tennessee Greenway as it winds along the river. The Oconaluftee, considered sacred waters by the Cherokee, is a beautiful, freestone river that drops 2,000 feet over 10 miles. Also known as the “Luftee,” this majestic river flows through Cherokee before joining the Little Tennessee on the way to Lake Fontana. Wading, tubing and canoeing are all popular activities found on the river. However, it’s most famous for its abundant and healthy rainbow, brook and brown trout. In fact, it holds the North Carolina Record Brown Trout weighing in at 15.9 pounds.
Check with North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission at ncwildlife.org for fishing regulations specific to each river. Tag your adventure #VisitSmokies
Fontana Lake forms part of the southern border of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and part of the northern border of the Nantahala National Forest. Short of a multi-day hike, Fontana Lake provides the only access into the most remote areas of the National Park, including Hazel Creek. The lake is used by boaters, floaters and flat-water kayakers looking for an out-of the-way experience. Also frequented by avid fisherman, some say that Fontana Lake offers the best smallmouth bass fishing in the United States. On a clear day, hikers can view the lake from the observation tower on Clingmans Dome, creating breathtaking views.
FON TANA LAKE
Nantahala Lake sits above the Nantahala Gorge and is known for its scenic beauty, crystal-clear waters and excellent fishing. Its beauty beckons to water-lovers looking to do some swimming, boating, skiing and many other activities. Meanwhile, anglers catch largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, trout, catfish and many different species of panfish. The lake is also the only place to find freshwater Kokanee salmon in the Southeast.

Oconaluftee River The Oconaluftee, considered sacred waters by the Cherokee, is a beautiful freestone river that drops 2,000 feet over 10 miles. In fact, it holds the North Carolina Record Brown Trout, weighing in at 15.9 pounds.
