FY2023

ANNUAL REPORT & YEAR IN REVIEW

Advocacy In September, Ride Illinois participated in a threeday event to bring attention to the gaps in the Great American Rail Trail through Illinois. The event, organized by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, highlighted economic and tourism potential of the trail with a goal to bring attention to the 16-mile gap between the I&M Great American Rail Trail event Canal Trail and Hennepin Canal Trail. A generous local foundation has pledged 100K to fund the feasibility study – an important step. Ride Illinois 2023 Highlights continues to work with Rails-to-Trails Conservancy and partners on a strategy to fund and construct a “rail with trail” connection between the I&M Canal and Hennepin Canal Trails. Connecting these trails will create a contiguous route, increase tourism, and provide active transportation opportunities for residents of nearby communities. More at railstotrails.org/greatamericanrailtrail/route/illinois. Ride Illinois is collaborating with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the Illinois Secretary of State, elected officials, and partners to develop meaningful solutions to increase safety for bicyclists, pedestrians, and other people moving about outside motor vehicles. The development of a meaningful, statewide Active Transportation Plan, changes in the way roads are designed and constructed, and legislation that could result in reduced speed limits on Illinois roads are initiatives Ride Illinois is actively involved in. In October, Ride Illinois joined 123 other organizations and businesses across the country that support the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) National Roadway Safety Strategy and their important Call to Action. Far too many have come to accept traffic crashes as an unavoidable part of modern society. Ride Illinois is committed to breaking that cycle and to doing our part to end roadway deaths. Learn more at rideillinois.org/ally-in-action.

Education Since 2018, nearly 400 public and private schools in Illinois have participated in Ride Illinois’ BikeSafetyQuiz Mini-Grant program. In the 2022-2023 school year, more than 66,000 students completed our online quizzes – a 27.8% increase over the previous year! During the last grant cycle, claims from schools surpassed our funding from IDOT by 15K. To contribute to a campaign to fill the funding gap, visit rideillinois.org/minigrant-program-update. The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and Ride Illinois are working together to develop a safe biking and walking curriculum for use by teachers in Illinois private and public schools. This is an exciting undertaking that is long overdue! Established curriculum will result in thousands of students across Illinois learning important life skills.

New Strategic Plan In April, the Ride Illinois Board of Directors adopted a new Strategic Plan that will guide our advocacy, education, and awareness efforts for the foreseeable future. Ride Illinois’ #1 goal is to greatly reduce, and ultimately eliminate, bicyclist fatalities in Illinois. We’re focused on steps to achieve that meaningful goal by collaborating with decision makers at the local, state, and federal level. The Strategic Plan is available at rideillinois.org/strategic-plan.

Separated infrastructure increases safety

The Ride Illinois Board of Directors established two new, important committees. The Advocacy committee is developing policy and legislative priorities at the state and federal levels. This committee is working diligently so biking can become a practical and safe mobility option for Illinois residents. The Education committee is focused on priorities related to educating bicyclists and motorists, providing guidance for programs, and developing resources for educating the public. Details about committees can be found at rideillinois.org/committees. Ride Illinois FY23 Year in Review

Events The third annual Let’s Ride, Illinois event tallied 17 rides from Lebanon to Libertyville. Rides included historical tours, stops for breakfast or beer, and a visit to local ice cream shop. This statewide event encourages adults and children to enjoy a casual bike ride with their neighbors (plus local bike clubs Let’s Ride, Illinois event in Normal and bike shops) to experience their community by bike. Start planning for the 2024 event which will take place from September 6-15. In 2023, Ride Illinois partnered with the League of American Bicyclists for the Drive Less, Bike More Challenge. The Challenge set a national goal of converting 2 million miles from motor vehicles to bicycles. Check out drivelessbikemore.com for details of the challenge and for tips for making more trips by bike in 2024.

Awareness Ride Illinois, Working Bikes and Pointz are collaborating on the I Can Bike There campaign. This campaign aims to educate the public and encourage them to use their bikes for everyday trips and explore new routes, while celebrating those who already use their bicycle as a practical, sustainable mode of transportation. Illinois residents are encouraged to submit their photos and details about their everyday trips by bike. Learn more and share your story at icanbikethere.org. Ride Illinois has met many wonderful people at community events. In January, we assisted Equiticity at the North Lawndale Racial Justice Ride. In February, we spoke to many at the Chicago Winter Bike Swap. In May, we joined Boxing Out Negativity at Bike Out Negativity and Think Outside Da Block at Roll N Peace 10. In July, Ride Illinois joined We Keep You Rollin’ Bike & Wellness Group’s Legacy Ride, the Bike Bonanza at the Elmhurst History Museum and the Bicycle Pilgrimage. In August, we could be found at the We Keep You Rollin’ Legacy Ride Palos Meltdown mountain bike race, Pedal the Preserves and the Street Love Ride. We aim to expand our community outreach in 2024, so be sure to share details of your community events by sending an email to community@rideillinois.org.

Generosity Ride Illinois partners with businesses and organizations who value our mission to make Illinois better through biking. Our Corporate Membership program is open to businesses of all sizes. More details are at rideillinois.org/corporate-membership.
