S COT T C A R B O N EXPERTS CARBON FIBER Carbon composites are the most diffused materials in the high performance bike industry. The technological development of this material has made great strides in the past years and today we can build reliable frames with high performance and at an extremely light weight. The benchmark fixed today thanks to this composite is something that goes beyond any previous expectations- this is why carbon composite can be considered the ‘black gold’ of our industry.

EvoLap-TECHNOLOGY

LAYUP TYPES

HMX-SL utilizes Nano-technology, which incorporates a carbon nanotube reinforced epoxy resin as well as MR70 carbon fiber. The carbon nanotubes offer improved strength perpendicular to and off-axis with regards to fiber direction, allowing for better inter-laminar shear strength. The cohesion between the fibers is improved compared to our industry leading HMX carbon blend offering an unprecedented resistance. Strategic use of this new material results in a frame that is lightweight without compromise in power transfer.

FILAMENT 04

STRAND

RIBBON

LAYER

SCOTT has improved upon the now conventional high modulus carbon fiber, HMF, used throughout the bicycle industry. HMX is a fiber blend used by SCOTT, and is 20 percent stiffer than its HMF counterpart for the same weight. This unique material allows SCOTT engineers to create incredibly light bikes with excellent riding characteristics. The cost of HMX, however, is three times that of HMF, and is therefore reserved for our high end frames.

HMF carbon fiber is used to maximize strength and to keep weight low. This material has an optimal blend of stiffness and strength that offers the best riding session. SCOTT’s engineering knowhow is utilized in order to create the perfect lay-up with regards to orientation and fiber size. HMF fiber offers superior strength compared to the industry standard. TUBE

The choice of the most advanced carbon fibers in the market comes along with intensive use of specific tools for the analysis of carbon lay-ups, for example FEA (finite element analysis) software. This allows us to create complete virtual prototypes of complex products which incorporate all the physical phenomena that exist in real-world environments. With our proprietary EvoLap-Technology, we can simulate different forces on a virtual model of the frame and adjust the frame construction accordingly. Testing our frames in this virtual environment allows us to experiment with an enormous amount of different fiber orientations that would be impossible to simulate though prototyping.

1. DESIGN & ENGINEERING

2. FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS

Carbon fiber has to be optimized in every aspect in order to achieve the highest in performance standards and function specific designs. These crude, dark, shiny black fibers, when used correctly, will yeld a quality structure that is truly purpose driven and uniquely different in ride quality. This phase is crucial, as the final result is not only based on the quality of the Carbon fiber, but more importanlty on the way that the composite is intended to be used. To achieve superior results, we use the most advanced software available while testing.

Finite Element Analysis enables the creation of a virtual frame to which we can simulate real-world riding scenarios. This allows us to test different frame and layup designs, refining down to the best proposal, before we cut any carbon.

3. PRECISION TRIMMING OF CARBON FIBER The key to a superior layup begins with the engineered shapes that must be laser cut. Great care is given to utilizing all of the available material in a raw sheet. In this part of the process, we manage to have precise cuts and perfectly shaped layers that allow us to avoid undesired excess of material on in key frame areas.

4. PREPARING THE LAYERS There is a multitude of pre-prepared pieces of all sizes that are necessary to construct a single bicycle frame. Precision over these many repetitions is key to success.

05

5. IMP PREFORMING

6. IMP-MOLDING PROCESS

7. MACHINING

8. BONDING & SECOND STEP LAYUP

IMP, or Integrated Molding Process, is a process developed by SCOTT engineers that allows for multiple tubes to be created in a single step WHILE managing the layers completely. Pre-tensioning of the raw materials is critical to the process, this optimizes the material, and has to be done by hand.

Our proprietary molding process is the result of 20+ years of commitment to carbon fiber. In this step, layers are compressed while they cure. This adds integrity to the structure and further optimizes our carbon layups.

In order to assemble a precise final product, areas of the frame with critical tolerances are tuned so that the frame is well finished.

The process of assembling the various pre-created parts of the frame is like completing a jigsaw puzzle. Care and precision is mandatory to mantain high quality for the finished product.

9. QUALITY CONTROL

10. TESTING STRENGTH & STIFFNESS

SCOTT engineers mantain a high level of quality control. Destruction testing is performed at different intervals throughout the prodution run.

Frames are put through rigorous testing during quality control evaluations. Fatigue tests are performed in order to gauge the long term durability of the finished product.

11. PAINTING, DECALS & CLEAR COAT FINISH Every great form deserves color and design. In order to achieve the rich appareance of SCOTT bicycles we choose high quality enamels and choose striking designs to give the product more appeal. Each decal is installed by hand and a durable clear coat is applied to protect the finish.

12. QUALITY CONTROL & SHIPPING Every SCOTT frame has a serial number which allows quality controllers to track the product at each level of the manufacturing and assembly process.

AERO COCKPIT The development of the Syncros Aero cockpit began as a project in 2015 to deliver a state-of-the-art bar that combined aerodynamic savings while retaining the traditional performance and weight savings of a premium road bar.

The updated version of the RR1.0 sees further refinement this year with the removal of the junction box storage compartment thanks to innovation from our component partners. Still maintaining the sleek aero design the RR1.0 is now offered in two sizes to fit both 1 ¼ and 1 ⅛ steerers.

18

RR1.0 This year the development continues with the addition of the Syncros Tri Extensions. In an effort to gain still more valuable aero savings, we developed this bolt on solution to accommodate riders looking for that extra edge.

Aero Drag varies between 80-90% of the overall resistance affecting the rider on flat roads. Of that total resistance, 80% is due to the rider and the remainder to the bike. The RR1.0 with Tri Extensions addresses both of these limitations by reducing the bike drag and moving the rider into a more aero position. Free speed, you’re welcome.

GOOD T I M E S, GREAT RIDES WOMEN’S CONTESSA ROAD It’s about you and the road, sometimes with a group of friends, always on your cherished bike. Because you know she’s never going to let you down. She’ll follow you on all your adventures and challenges. Mile after mile, the link between you two grows stronger as you enjoy the amazingly satisfying feeling of moving forward, until you reach your goal. The road is yours, you’ve earned it.

67

OWN THE ROAD 68

Day by day, race by race, our athletes push the boundaries of women’s cycling further and further. From all around the world, their victories as well as their defeats inspire and excite us. Courageous, ambitious, resilient, dedicated and passionate are the words that describe these incredible women that we are proud to support. To all of them, thank you and congrats!

MORE THAN YOUR BEST FRIEND CONTESSA SOLACE The Contessa Solace will be right there with you during those adventures. She will be a silent but reliable companion and she will never stop reminding you of the good times you had together.

WOMEN’S SPECIFIC FRAME DESIGN Contessa Solace models sport a women’s specifc full carbon frame to perfectly match the anatomy of female riders. A 10mm shorter toptube combined with a 10mm higher headtube and 10mm lower seattube take into account the different proportions of women and offer a perfect fit for female road cyclists.

BALANCING OPPOSED FORCES The Contessa Solace features the same innovative frame characteristics as its counterpart in the men’s line-up. While the Comfort Zone assures a comfortable riding sensation due to shock and vibration absorption, the Power Zone is comprised of laterally and torsionally rigid frame structures assuring maximum power transfer of rider-actuated forces.

73

W O M E N ’ S S P E C I F I C S Y N C R O S PA R T S Carefully selected ergonomic and women’s specific Syncros components make our Contessa road bikes the eligible counterparts for countless hours in the saddle.
