Scott Aero Science is a dedicated group of engineers within the Scott organization, while committed to the Scientific Method, are charged with the task of innovating the most aerodynamic bicycles possible. They hypothesize beyond empirical thinking, experiment with new techniques to prove these hypotheses, and always produce data that can be reliably replicated. To prove Scott Aero Science theories, they employ CFdesign software to test concepts virtually before validating designs in the wind tunnel with quantifiable data. Bike designs are additionally tested with mannequins, actual riders, and a number of other environmental variables to ensure that test results accurately reflect real world riding conditions.

THE FOIL, YOUR NEXT ROAD RACING BIKE Why YOU NEED an Aero Road Bike? In the near future, round tube competition bikes will be abandoned in favor of a fuselage more suitable for any situation a rider may encounter on the road, battling the elements. The elements are always against you, the wind is trying to slow you, the climb is trying to break you, riders today need an advantage against these elements AND the competition. No matter what the rider encounters on a course, they have a considerable advantage against these elements aboard Aero Road versus conventional round tube bikes. Road frames have remained relatively unchanged in regards to shape for decades, focusing solely on material and overlooking the aerodynamics. In the age of carbon fiber there are no limits in the tube shapes we can attain and the attributes we require from their unison in the within fuselage. Time Trialists have reaped the benefits of aerodynamics for

many years. When racing against the clock for shorter distances as done in TT, frames chosen gain mere seconds advantages but are not suitable for longer road stages. With carbon fiber, these aero tube shapes are now available without compromise in stiffness or compliance, resulting in a perfectly balanced ration of these characteristics. FOIL Aero Road, your next bike. The Perfect Bike takes into account three MAJOR variables; Stiffness, Weight and Aerodynamics. A combination of the three makes for the most complete balance of attributes for transforming rider input into acceleration. For fewer watts, the rider can maintain the same average speed, keeping them fresh for whatever effort is most important. The advantages span across Sprinting, Climbing and overall stage winning disciplines found in road racing.

OBJECTIVES IN PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT Innovation-Technology-Design Because the FOIL is a Road Racing bicycle, we needed to maintain a high level of lateral stiffness in the frame for maximum power transfer while retaining a low overall weight. The resulting technology is an Aero Road bike, developed to be faster and more efficient in all ROAD conditions. We identified and prioritized several characteristics for inclusion in the FOIL design. Because it is a Road Racing bicycle, we needed to maintain a high level of lateral stiffness in the frame for maximum power transfer while maintaining a low overall weight. We further chose to prioritize lateral stiffness over weight, because this frame is only slightly heavier than the Addict and yet substantially lighter than other manufacturer’s frames in this category. Additionally, the UCI still enforces a minimum bike weight in the professional ranks. In aerodynamic testing, an “all-around” approach was taken instead of being concerned with ‘straight on’ aerodynamics. This means that we were more concerned with how aero the bike would prove in a wide range of yaw angles (angle of incidence to the wind direction) versus directly. We did this, because in Road Racing, the athlete seldom rides straight into wind. Instead, the angle of incidence varies infinitely because of road curvature, peloton formation, and constantly changing weather. Finally, we wanted to maintain a compliance factor in the frameset. Most traditional, UCI legal 3:1 NACA airfoil shaped tubes offer poor vibration damping and little vertical compliance. Because of this, and the relatively high weight of such tubes, Scott engineers decided to develop a virtual airfoil tube shape which utilizes the leading edge, overall length and width ratio, and shape of tube to direct the wind over the tube much like an airfoil design, but without all the excess material of the trailing edge. We called this F01 Technology, referring to our own “cut” airfoil shape that offers optimal aerodynamic performance while remaining laterally stiff, vertically compliant, and lightweight.
THE DAWN OF PROJECT F01 AND F01 TECHNOLOGY Scott Aero Science engineers began with various tubing shapes first in CFdesign programs to identify shapes before producing prototypes that would then be validated in the wind tunnel. Over 100 hours of wind tunnel validation time was invested solely in the FOIL project using Drag2Zero facilities in Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix Wind Tunnel. Starting with raw tubes, shapes were identified and built into complete test mules, and then analyzed against current competitor designs. Over 60 tube shapes were tested in order to identify the optimum “cut ratio”. The engineers selected tube shapes that are wider than normal NACA aero tubes. They were designed with a “leading edge” and a ratio of height to width that complies with UCI regulations, while still maintaining the lowest air disturbance vis-àvis both individual tubes and the overall frame structure. The ratios of the aggregate tubes are between 6:1 and 12:1 resulting in a 9:1 average ratio, well within the UCI limits and actually going the opposite direction in relation to other manufacturers in this regard. The result is a virtual tube shape, a tube that is not NACA shaped but a truncated cross section, which acts in the same way. Each and every tube in the frameset is analyzed for cut position along the “chord”, or length of the tube profile. Most tubes are cut retaining between 25-35% of the overall chord length. This science of tube shape is a contrast to the Kamm tail designs that emerged 80 years ago in that we use the leading edge of the tube rather than simply cutting the trailing edge like some competitors practice.

THE OUTCOME: F01 AERO TECHNOLOGY F01 Technology is based on the theory that a partial airfoil shape without the trailing edge can produce the same aerodynamic advantage as a traditional foil shape. Modern foil shapes are largely based on models and ratios created for airplanes by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), but because bicycles attain speeds far less than those of airplanes, these ratios do not necessarily apply to bikes. Scott Aero Science engineers have thus developed F01 Technology to create unique, bicycle specific tube shapes which maximize aerodynamic efficiency at lower air speeds. By implementing original, yet UCI legal ratios, and removing the typical foil’s trailing edge, Scott engineers were able increase frame strength and compliance while simultaneously lowering the overall weight compared to other ‘aero’ road frames

The FOIL frame design offers increased lateral stiffness compared to non-aero frames and using F01 technology does not concede any power transfer. Even at these elevated lateral stiffness values the FOIL does not compromise the comfortable attributes of a carbon structure, it retains a balance of lateral stiffness AND compliance.

WHAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE ? FUSELAGE INTERACTION Every tube in the frame is oriented in relation to the leading edges of the down tube and head tube, as these are the first points of contact for any wind influence. The rear stays are oriented 4 degrees from the seat tube plane to route air from the front triangle around the rear triangle cleanly, and are constructed with a carbon layup that additionally results in vertical compliance.
The shape of the seat stays create a silhouette effect that continues past the rear brake and hides them from the wind.
IMP CONSTRUCTION FRAME / HMX CARBON FIBER Scott’s patented IMP Technology allows thin, complex shapes to be formed seamlessly by removing 11% of the material from tube intersection. Complementing the IMP process, our frames benefit from our Naked External Tubeset (NET™) finish, which eliminates the cosmetic carbon layer to shave precious grams. This new fiber, which is produced exclusively for Scott, offers 20% more stiffness and is employed on all the areas that need additional rigidity. This new material also allows us to reduce weight and improve riding characteristics.
3:1 F01 FORK / TAPERED HEAD TUBE The fork and head tube junction represents an excellent balance between the constraints of creating an aero frame and the need for lateral stiffness in a Road Racing frame. The fork most closely resembles a typical 3:1 ratio shape to seamlessly integrate with the head tube. The fork interfaces with the head tube using a 1 ¼” crown bearing, promoting lateral stiffness while maintaining the designated shape of the head tube’s aerodynamic leading edge. Stiffness is further enhanced by the fork’s carbon layup. Because there is less variation in the diameter of the fork steerer to crown intersection, the carbon fibers are better aligned and thus better maintain their structural properties.

scott-sports.com/FOIL
BOTTOM BRACKET AREA The down tube flares at the oversize bottom bracket junction achieving several design goals. This construction adds lateral stiffness without increasing wall thickness, and the new bottom bracket mold disperses loads to effectively half the stress on this crucial junction. The shape of the down tube and bottom bracket carries seamlessly into the chain stays, further reducing turbulence and creating an additional aero benefit. Also, the drive side outer diameter of the bottom bracket conveniently accommodates an SRM or power meter.
INTEGRATED SEAT CLAMP / AERO SEATPOST The top tube borrows from prior Scott Aero Science work on the Plasma3 in that the head tube functions as the leading edge and the tube then gradually transitions in diameter along a horizontal plane all the way to the seat tube. The recessed, integrated seat clamp matches the top tube and seat tube shape, avoids creating turbulence, and conforms to our tail shape principle. The Aero seatpost is available in 2 versions: 0mm and 25mm off set.
INTEGRATED CABLE ROUTING The shifter and rear brake cables are completely hidden and unique cable guides are employed to keep the cables from contacting the inside of the frame, resulting in smooth, quiet function.
