AN EVE NING O F

Readings Carols AND

December 10 and 11, 2021 Princeton University Chapel

Westminster Choir College of Rider University’s An Evening of Readings and Carols is a fusion of two great Christmas traditions from England and the United States. The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols from King’s College Cambridge, which began in 1918, has proved to be one of the most influential liturgical events of the 20th century with iterations being mounted in churches, chapels and cathedrals around the world. When James Jordan first established Westminster’s An Evening of Readings and Carols in 1992, it was based on the King’s College service and performed in Bristol Chapel on the Westminster campus. In response to the growing demand for tickets, Westminster’s Readings and Carols moved to the Princeton University Chapel, and the synergy with King’s College grew deeper. When Princeton University’s chapel was completed in the 1920s, it stood as the second largest collegiate chapel in the world, sitting behind only King’s College Chapel in its dimensions. Its choir stalls are hewn from English oak, and its design is set in the Gothic tradition of medieval English architecture. — James Whitbourn

Joy to the world the Savior reigns; let men their songs employ, while fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy, repeat, repeat the sounding joy. Texts and Translations I Wonder as I Wander I wonder as I wander out under the sky How Jesus the Saviour did come for to die. For poor on’ry people like you and like I; I wonder as I wander out under the sky

John Jacob Niles arr. Steven Pilkington

When Mary birthed Jesus ‘twas in a cow’s stall With wise men and farmers and shepherds and all But high from God’s heaven, a star’s light did fall And the promise of ages it then did recall. If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing A star in the sky or a bird on the wing Or all God’s angels in heaven to sing He surely could have it, ‘cause he was the King.

Sing Nowell to all and some! Man of ancient days, he sings In praise of the King of kings, When you hear the pipe and drum, Tu-re-lu-re-lu, Pa-ta-pa-ta-pan! When you hear the pipe and drum You will know that the Saviour’s come. Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day

arr. John Rutter

Tomorrow shall be my dancing day; I would my true love did so chance To see the legend of my play, To call my true love to my dance; Sing, oh! my love, oh! my love, my love, my love, This have I done for my true love. Then was I born of a virgin pure, Of her I took fleshly substance Thus was I knit to man’s nature To call my true love to my dance. Sing, oh! my love, oh! my love, my love, my love, This have I done for my true love. In a manger laid, and wrapped I was So very poor, this was my chance Betwixt an ox and a silly poor ass To call my true love to my dance. Sing, oh! my love, oh! my love, my love, my love, This have I done for my true love. The Ballad of the Brown King (1956, 1960) III. Sing Alleluia Sing Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia to our King! IV. Mary Had a Little Baby Mary Had a Little Baby Jesus, that was his name. All the world became much brighter When little Jesus, the Christ-child came. That was in a lowly manger, Outside the night was cold. But within that lowly manger, Behold how warm is love is; Oh, Behold!

Mary had a little baby, In the night a bright star shone. I am lost, so lost and lonely, Nevermore shall be alone. Version for Strings, Harp, and Organ (2018) Libretto: Langston Hughes (1901 – 1967) Edition: Malcolm J. Merriweather (b. 1985) Mack Wilberg

Jubilate Deo Jubilate, Jubilate Deo, Omnis terra: Servite Domino in laetitia!

Shout joyfully to the Lord, All the earth; Serve the Lord with gladness!

Introite in conspectu ejus In exultatione. Scitote quoniam Dominus ipse est Deus: Ipse fecit nos, et non ipse nos; Populus ejus, Et oves pascuae ejus. Introite portas ejus in confessione, Atria ejus in hymnis: confitemini illi. Laudate, Laudate nomen ejus. Jubilate, jubilate Deo, omnis terra.

Come before him with joyful song. Know that the Lord is God; It is he that made us, and not us ourselves; His people, And the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, His courts with praise: Give thanks to him. Praise him, praise his name. Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth.

O Holy Night O Holy Night! The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining. Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born.

Adolphe Adam arr. Rutter

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming, With glowing hearts by his cradle we stand. So, led by light of a star sweetly gleaming, Here came the wise men from the Orient land. The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger; In all our trials born to be our friend. He knows our need, to our weakness no stranger, Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!

13

Truly he taught us to love one another, His law is love and his Gospel is peace. Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother, And in his name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, Let all within us praise his holy name. Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we, His power and glory ever more proclaim! Festival First Nowell

Dan Forrest

The first Nowell the angels did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay, keeping their sheep, On a cold winter’s night that was so deep: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel. They looked up and saw a star shining in the east beyond them far; And to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night. Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel. Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heav’nly Lord That hath made heav’n and earth of nought, And with His blood mankind hath bought Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel. W Zlobie Lezy Wzlobie lezy ktoz pobiezy kolodowac malemu? Jezu sowi Chrystuso Dzis donasze slanemu Pastuszkowie przybywajcie jako panu naszemu. My zas sami zpiosneczemi, Zawami pospieszymy. Polish Carol arr. Roger Ames

Infant Holy, Infant Lowly Infant holy, Infant lowly, For his bed a cattle stall; Oxen lowing, Little knowing Christ the Babe is Lord of all. Swift are winging Angels singing, Nowells ringing, Tidings bringing, Christ the Babe is Lord of all, Christ the Babe is Lord of all. Silent Night Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright round yon virgin, mother and child. Holy infant so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace.

Franz Gruber arr. Ryan James Brandau

Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight; glories stream from heaven afar; heav’nly hosts sing alleluia! Christ, the Savior, is born, Christ, the Savior, is Born! Silent night, holy night! Son of God, love’s pure light radiant beams from Thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.
