A Golfing nugget in Calaveras County
It’s interesting how you can tell a little about the designer of a course by the tee shots required. I’m guessing the original architect of this course by Rick Rider must have been a fader off the tee, because many or all of the tee shot here favor a fade... As any golfer who lives in Calaveras County, though some of my friends will disagree with me. or visits regularly knows, we have our share of interesting and challenging golf courses. Number one does require a nice controlled fade to To the north and west there is La Contenta Golf Club, an interesting proposition as it winds its way through the La Contenta home development. Challenging for sure, this course is a great match play venue. The to the east and up the hill, we have Sequoia Woods, which is another great match play venue, but with views and high-country pines that really give it character. To the south and west is another favorite, Saddle Creek Resort. Nestled among the Saddle Creek development, this is a big course with big shoulders...bring your A-game here. All are good golf courses, but I have a favorite course here in Calaveras County, and not simply because it’s right in my own back yard...it is. I happened upon this course early after my arrival to the county, and it didn’t take long for me to get hooked on this one. The history of this area could probably fill this booklet, so maybe another day, except to say that there is plenty of history available to the naked eye, and wayward golf shot. The rock wall, chimney and chinese oven on hole number 4 are remarkable evidence of the mining and toiling that took place here in the mid-nineteenth century. History surrounds this rolling golf course, but I like to talk about the quality of golf here. From the moment you step on first tee, you know you’re gonna’ have to hit quality golf shots. Same with number 3, 5, 6, 8, and so on...
avoid the bunkers on the left side, and fit the drive neatly into the slight dogleg right fairway. Number two also favors a fade from the tee, avoiding the tree straight away, and also give you a better angle into a tough putting green. You can hit it straight off the fourth to lay up short of the wall, but if you want to gamble a bit and fire it over the wall, where a high hard precise fade is the order for the longknockers...the reward is great if you can pull it off. Number 5, probably the toughest hole on the front nine, definitely requires a well placed fade, aimed down the left side of the fairway if you’re going to give yourself a chance at birdie or par here. Most are better off hitting a lofted wood down the middle, take your medicine and lay up short of the pond, and pitch it up onto the green. Avoid a big number here would be my advice. Even the next par 3 suits a fade off the tee, given the generous portion of the green and landing area left of the green. What a great par 3 number 6 is, and we’ll discuss it more in a bit...as are all of the par 3’s here. They are both well-designed and beautifully difficult. Most golfers can manage these big par 4’s and 5’s, whether you fade it or not...using reasonable strategy. The par 3’s, however do require a special calmness, and a fair dose of discretion and calculation. That’s why for my money, it’s the par 3’s that make this golf course. Continued on page 16

Starting with number 3, which is a shortish hole and a tough-to-read green, with a bail out area to the right. You cannot miss left, period, or you can mark down at least double-bogey. From the white tees, usually a short iron is adequate. Make a good swing and favor the right side of the green, the tee shot will work off the higher right side. Miss it right of the green and you’ll have a tough chip to a difficult green, but is doable. Funny, I heard the other day that plenty of holes-in-one have occurred here, and seeing how the green funnels to a couple of pin positions I can believe it. Number 6 is one of those par 3’s that require a decision to either play safe away from the hole, or gather your nerves and shoot right at it. Positioned right after the tough par 4 5th, number 6 can be the toughest shot on the front nine, depending on the wind. With water virtually surrounding the hole, good
yardage and a calm nerves are needed here. The only bailout is a section that includes the left half of the green and the chipping area left of the green. Again, if you miss into the chipping area, you will have a downhill chip or putt to a fast putting
surface. Average golfer should play to the left side of the green with plenty of club, and work their way down to the hole from there. Any shot near the middle of the green is great. Par is also great here, and bogey acceptable, as many trainwrecks have been known to happen here. Number 8 is a longish hole, from 150 to 180 yards depending on the tee, and is fronted by 2 develish bunkers. that you don’t want to play in. The green is situated on a diagonal from front left to back right, which is a brilliant design for a par 3. The cautious golfer won’t get hurt
too much by missing this green short and left... but miss it right and you’ll have a tough pitch to the putting surface. Middle of the green here is a good shot, and 2 putts are great. Stepping onto the 13th tee is always a thrill for me. First you get the view, which is hard to describe, but fairly remarkable. Then you look down at this green, fronted by the pond and framed by the bunkers behind it, and reality sets in as you need to do some real figuring with the sharp elevation change in front of you. With the breeze generally helping and from the right, plus at least 30 ft of elevation drop, the wary golfer will Continued on next page
need to adjust their club selection between one and three clubs less than the yardage implies. There is a miss zone here, and short and left of the green usually won’t wreck your score. If you do miss short and left, which is preferable than the pond fronting the green, you’ll have a downhill chip to a green that slopes away from you, so pay attention and give your chip plenty of roll time. The well hit tee shot is left side of the green, or if you are feeling really sporty, middle of the green is always good. Tee shots will release to the right after they
You have to hit this green to have a chance at par or birdie, and with the breeze generally following from behind, hitting this green is doable for most as long as you steady your nerves. If you get anxious, which is easy to do, all of nature could await you, as well as a big number. Play to the front half of this green most of the time and you can avoid the big numbers. Personally par 3’s make this a course, though on bad days they can it a long journey to the nineteenth

It is difficult to imagine a more enjoyable day for me than to challenge the kind of course where a score-wrecking hole is lurking virtually everywhere, conquering it, and then enjoying it with our golfing friends at the nineteenth hole. And after having met the challenge on this course, land, and putts tend to fall towards Melones a cold beverage on this lovely veranda and away from the small pond...so keep this or in the welcoming nineteenth hole in mind. This diabolical little beauty may be is a fitting end to this Calaveras golfing journey. the best birdie opportunity of all the par 3’s here, but not without plenty of good work. Number 15 is the last of the par 3’s at Greenhorn Creek, and is another quality tee shot. The green here is also situated diagonally from short left to long right, and favors a fade into a fairly elevated and rejecting-type putting surface...high in the middle and sloping down on the edges. With a hazard crossing the front of the The view and ambiance are simply spectacular. green, and tough bunkers surrounding it, there are no real bailouts here.
