Wine, bricks and Prohibition Edited by Rick Rider Apparently most Americans wanting a drink of alcohol during the years of Prohibition found a way to get one. Whether slipping into a speakeasy or illegal gin joint, hard liquor and illegal hooch was plentiful during the time. And if most of America was chugging gin, whiskey and other wild hooch during the time, we Californians apparently had a different idea, as our fledgling wine industry had just taken hold out here. So while the m a n u f a c t u r e , importation, sale, and transport of alcohol was illegal in the United States, Section 29 of the Volstead Act allowed wine and cider to be made from fruit at home, but not beer. The Act did not prohibit consumption of alcohol, though the Volstead Act did define an intoxicating beverage as one with greater than 0.5% alcohol. Up to 200 gallons of wine and cider per year could be made, and some vineyards grew grapes for home use, as long as it wasn’t alcoholic. Selling fermented and alcoholic wines during the time was illegal, so most grape growers and farmers apparently produced and sold liquid grape concentrates, and solid grape concentrates in brick form, known appropriately as wine bricks, legally and fairly non-intoxicating to the consumer if consumed properly.
Though many farmers and wineries decided to pull up their vines to comply with the law, others apparently placed warnings on their products, describing to the consumer the dangers of accidental fermenting, and no laws were broken. One such warning could be read... ‘Warning. Do not place this wine brick in one gallon of water, stir and let sit in warm temperatures for 10 days, or it might ferment and turn into wine.’ And here is another gem... ‘After dissolving the brick in a gallon of water, do not place the liquid in a jug away in the cupboard for twenty days, because then it would turn into wine.’ That would be all I would need...to do just the opposite. So they sold their grapes in concentrate, warned the consumers not to allow certain types of fermentation, and voila... the recipe for good wine made right at home. Well maybe just okay wine, but you sure could catch a buzz. Some could have been fantastic. These ‘wine bricks’ may have not only saved the wine business here in California during prohibition, but apparently there was quite the wine rush to get out here and grow and sell grapes and grape bricks.
Many people, including the famous Beringer Vineyards, and Mondavi family became incredibly rich. The demand for grapes and these concentrate products rose dramatically during the time, and yet there were fewer farmers to keep up with the supply, since several wine makers had already torn up their vineyards to plant orchards.
