P R OPO S I TI ON JODHPUR AND ITS IMPORTANCE Jodhpur, popularly known as Blue City, is said to be the Cultural Capital of Rajasthan. Jodhpur is a popular tourist destination, featuring many palaces, forts and temples, set in the stark landscape of the Thar Desert. NEED IDENTIFICTION Architecture is the manifestation and expression of culture masked by layers of abstraction. It is important to convey people, the gravity to conserve the historic and cultural aspect of heritage structures. In this context Jodhpur is an outstanding case where tangible and intangible heritage are coupled closely and face a greater risk of loss due to globalisation. OBJECTIVE • To change the current image of Mandore Fort & Garden and preserve its heritage. • To create cultural spaces and exhibitions as public interventions which would create awareness about importance of conservation of historically rich spaces. • To create awareness about the Architecture of past and its importance in the modern times.
3 D VI EW O F SI T E DESIGN INTENT The intention is to create a space which captivates the unassuming visitor by stories and representation of the city’s past and the present. The Historic and Cultural centre is the cluster of spaces that promotes and create awareness about various forms of architecture, culture and art through display and organising various workshops, shows and events. The proposed center will come under jurisdiction of state ASI circle, under which it will be considered as the extension of the historic ruins. The center will be able to generate revenue with its various public intensive activities like workshops, shops and bazaar, hosting local events and renting out exhibition spaces to various artists.
SITE C ON T EXT • • • •
SITE SELECTION & JUSTIFICATION • The site is part of the historic precinct of Mandore Fort and is connected to the beautiful historic Mandore garden, Jodhpur. • In the course of last few decades, Mandore garden has lost its charm and very few tourist flock this place. • Hence, the project with its various public intensive functions aims to revive the fading glory of the historic precinct and generate more tourism.
SITE CONTEXT The site comes under the ASI, Jaipur Circle. The potential area taken, is the barren land on backside of the Mandore fort ruins. The site sits atop a hillock at an altitude of 281 m. It has a gentle slope of 1:16. There are Existing temples and palace structures to the east of the site. Mandore Garden lies further east of the site. There are 2 exisiting pedestrian pathways from Garden situated in south and north-east side.
C ON CEP T & Z ON I N G • The structures are placed such that they radiate outwards from the central core in 3 directions. • The core opens in the east direction towards the ruins to knit the existing heritage to the new campus. • The structural height is kept in accordance with the existing structures so that the new built mass does not owerpower the existing heritage. • The new campus is designed such that it blends all art forms together RELATION BETWEEN PROPOSED CAMPUS AND EXISTING HERITAGE USE OF CURVED EDGES AUDITORUM
WORKSHOP
• Subtle guidance path to explore more spaces. • Sense of flow from one space to another.
FOOD COURT AMPHITHEATER/GALLERY ART GALLERY
• Since the fort ruins are very rugged, the proposed curved edged structures instill sense of fluidity and soften the landscape.
