Faith in Business www.faith-in-business.org Faith in Business is a feature of theological college life unique to Ridley. Established in 1989, it is a project concerned with relating Christian faith to the world of work, notably that of business. It developed out of a twin concern: the concept of lay ministry tends to be restricted to what laypeople can do for the church, rather than focusing on the work which occupies most of their time; and the church’s attitude to business is all too often marked by indifference, suspicion or hostility. Faith in Business seeks to address these concerns by its twofold mission: • to affirm the role of business in God’s purposes • to explore the application of Christian faith and values in business

Faith in Business

It seeks to encourage lay Christians to be faithful disciples in demanding working contexts and also equips those training at Ridley for ministry with business people. Country (if outside the UK):

What Faith in Business Offers: • research into the area of business, faith, values and leadership • an annual conference which takes place at Ridley over a spring weekend • one-day workshops with a sharply focused brief for small groups • publications including books and a quarterly journal • speaking engagements across the UK and further afield

Richard Higginson and Faith in Business have been trailblazing for years. I have come to depend on them to keep me up-to-date in this important and neglected field.

At Ridley we seek to raise awareness among our students – the future leaders of our churches – about the critical issues of contemporary culture. Business is one of these.

Transforming the Church’s engagement with the world of work and business

Analysis of and response to the global financial crisis Recent events have addressed the issues of Ethical Finance and Business Recovery. Richard Higginson has also co-authored two publications on the Ethics of Executive Pay. Alternative Business Models Through extensive international travel Richard has undertaken research into social enterprise, fair trade, micro-finance, cooperatives and eco-friendly companies. He draws on this research in his recent book Faith, Hope & the Global Economy. China’s Economy and the Chinese Church The Chinese economy is growing fast, as is the Chinese church. Through speaking, writing and broadcasting engagements Faith in Business is helping Chinese Christians to make a positive contribution in the workplace.

In addition, a short intensive course dedicated to exploring the relation between faith and business is designed to equip our students for ministry to and alongside business people.
