Restoring Prayer International Simeon Centre conference A conference for all who long to grow in their spiritual life and to help their church rediscover a passion for prayer
Thursday 3rd – Sunday 6th September 2009 Ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls (Jeremiah 6:16)
Keynote speaker – Eugene Peterson Probably best known for The Message, his translation of the Bible in the language of today, Dr Peterson was for many years James M. Houston Professor of Spiritual Theology at Regent College. Now retired from full-time teaching, Eugene lives in rural Montana and has recently completed The Jesus Way, his latest in a projected five-volume series.
“It will be an immense privilege to spend these days together, learning, sharing in prayer, exploring new and old paths in our journey with Christ.” Adrian Chatfield, Director of the Simeon Centre

Pathways in Prayer In addition to regular morning and evening worship, prayer and Bible exposition, we will be offering a series of workshops – Pathways in Prayer. These will be facilitated by people drawn from a whole range of Christian spiritual traditions, from Bishop Simon Barrington-Ward on the Jesus Prayer, through the sculptor Toddy Hoare, to Sally Dakin on forms of sensory prayer.
Accommodation The conference will be held in the beautiful setting of Ridley Hall’s Victorian quadrangle. Accommodation is offered in Ridley Hall itself, and in the equally splendid setting of Selwyn College nearby. Meals will be provided, cafeteria-style, at the Colleges. There is a limited number of single en-suite rooms, available on a first-come, firstserved basis. All other accommodation is single, with shared bathroom facilities. Married couples may request adjacent rooms with shared facilities, subject to availability. Rooms with facilities for disabled people are also available – email Rosemary Kew on rak44@cam.ac.uk for details or call +44(0)1223 741080.
Travelling Like many historic cities, Cambridge is more friendly to bicycles than to cars! Parking in the city is scarce and expensive, and we highly recommend coming by train or coach. Ridley Hall and Selwyn College are just a 10-minute taxi ride from the rail and coach stations. Limited provision will be available for disabled parking – please call +44(0)1223 741080 or email Rosemary Kew on rak44@cam.ac.uk. For more information on travelling to the conference visit www.ridley.cam.ac.uk/ scprogramme.html.
Other speakers The Revd Canon Anne Dyer: ‘Restore to me the joy of your salvation...’ (Psalm 51:12) Anne Dyer is Warden of Cranmer Hall. Her research interests are in the areas of visual and material culture, including Fine Art in the Western Tradition and the objects of life and faith that accompany and enable prayer.
Professor Alister McGrath: Adoration – The Consummation of Theology in Prayer and Worship
Alister McGrath is presently Professor of Theology, Ministry and Education, and Head of the Centre for Theology, Religion and Culture, at King’s College, London. He has a longstanding interest in the relation of theology and spirituality.
Dr Paula Gooder: Bible Explorations Paula Gooder is a freelance writer and lecturer in New Testament. She is a visiting lecturer at Kings College London, Canon Theologian of Birmingham Cathedral and a Reader in the Church of England.
The Simeon Centre The Simeon Centre was founded in 2007 with the aim of helping Christian leaders, churches and indeed anyone who longs to be closer to God, to grow in the desire and capacity to pray, and to be better equipped to guide and enable others to pray. The Centre is part of the outreach of Ridley Hall, Cambridge, England, which has been a centre of theological training and spiritual formation for Anglican clergy and other ministers for over 125 years.
Restoring Prayer is proud to be part of the celebrations of the 800th anniversary of Cambridge University and of the 900th anniversary of the Diocese of Ely. The conference programme will include space to explore both cities.
