ADM Afro-Futurism Workshop 24/10/18 When it was announced that the faculty wanted to support creative initiatives as part of Black History Month, I felt compelled to provide a creative space for students from mixed disciplines across the faculty to come together and share. I contacted my very good friend Juice Aleem, rapper, artist, poet, writer and all-round polymath to see if he wanted to get involved in delivering something around notions of Afrofuturism, and how that might be expressed in a number of creative ways by the students. So, Juice came, and to a room of students from art, design, architecture, media, fashion and English and visual communications delivered an insightful lecture that explored those notions of Afrofuturism. With heads full of knowledge and ideas the students set about creating artefacts that reflected their take on what Afrofuturism meant to them as individuals but also collectively. To bring this all together the editorial team of RIFFS journal, Sarah Raine and Craig Hamilton, volunteered to help turn the student’s excellent creations into a live digital ‘zine.
