what i wrote on my notes app, from when i initiated this project in december of 2022:
this serves as a jumping-off point. i am trying to reconcile my personal experiences with the bigger picture; alongside the structures that are present in the world as we know it. at this moment of personal and societal transition, i am also trying to figure out where my place in the world is. i am a product of where i come from, and so are my photos. i acknowledge that my photos are a product of where i am situated socially, mentally, geographically. i am able to exist in spheres of privilege. i was able to have access to education and a rather sheltered lifestyle because of what my privilege has afforded me. the act of being able to photograph is a privilege in itself. such act falls under the scope of privilege. i aim to connect the dots between the gaze i've conjured up, as well as its implications. the personal has always been political.
