VENUES SPLENDID PALACE
KINO BIZE
The festival’s home and primary event location. One of Europe’s most beautiful cinemas inspires a sincere celebration of cinema together with RIGA IFF. Long ago, it was the first theatre in Northern Europe to display sound motion pictures. No strange to festivities, it will host the Opening of RIGA IFF, the FEATURE FILM COMPETITION, the Award Ceremony, numerous premieres, and most of the screenings... You’ll find the festival’s Information Centre here as well!
Among the most recently set up cinemas in Riga, it is hidden away in the silent central neighbourhood. With its romantic attitude to alternative filmmaking and productions, it is the Art Nouveau of Riga’s film life. You must look for good cinema! To find the entrance of Kino Bize, follow the RIGA IFF sign through the triumphal arch. This venue will be displaying most of the SHORT RIGA programme, among other screenings.
K.SUNS
CAFE FILM NOIR
A legendary, cosy cinema. It screened excellent motion pictures already two decades before RIGA IFF was conceived. Nurtured in the best traditions of family business, this is a treasure trove of festival films and hosting special cinema events held by foreign embassies and cultural institutions. RIGA IFF will present here the BEAST programme featuring promising film directors from Eastern Europe, the special event May 68, A Fine Piece of Work and multiple other cinematic surprises.
A place that combines cafe, cinema and event venue. The basement storey of Splendid Palace is a hotspot for discussions among cinema industry professionals. Lectures, presentations and panel discussions held here shape the new cinema discourse – not only among adults, but among the RIGA IFF KIDS WEEKEND Children’s jury members as well. Have a look at the Event programme to discover where your presence is needed!
National Library of Latvia
Kaņepe’s Culture Centre
Two of the many introductions new to the festival this year are having the NLL as a venue, and the ARCHITECT’S CUT programme. The National Library of Latvia, dubbed the Castle of Light, is one of this decade’s most noticeable new buildings in Riga, and a hot topic for discussions – which is why we could not have imagined a better location for motion pictures and talks about architecture. As part of the programme, five films will be presented in four screenings at the Ziedonis Hall.
KKC represents the festival’s most informal zone. A great place to spend one’s free time. A meeting point where burning issues are raised over a drink. Some of the most heated debate – and some of the most light-hearted dancing – has taken place at this exact location. If you want to talk to someone after a screening, just say ‘See you at Kaņepe!’. For a break from the KKC’s extensive partying, enjoy the RIGA IFF’s selected Baltic Music Video Competition clips at the movie hall upstairs.

RIGA IFF FORUM Not more than five years ago, the Baltic scenery of children’s and youth films changed considerably. Children’s films of the region gained recognition at film festivals and traveled around the globe. During the couple past years the state funding (especially in Latvia and Estonia) for family friendly audiovisual content brought to life a versatile line-up of children’s films that in the past two years have set new box office records, powerfully proving that the Baltic audiences are thirsty for child friendly cinema. Knowing that the force behind the European works are co-productions and that good ideas need to be shared, RIGA IFF took on a challenge to create a meeting and exchange platform for children’s and youth films. Powered by the National Film Centre of Latvia, the annual event showcases and analyses upcoming Baltic productions as well as gathers children’s and youth film professionals from other parts of Central and Eastern Europe, in order to create a beneficial climate for co-productions among European countries. A line-up of handpicked projects from outside the Baltic region is showcased, in order to help them find co-producers within the Baltics.
As a result, the third FORUM - one of a kind event in the Baltic States - will include a pitching session of upcoming Baltic, East and Central European children’s and youth film projects, followed by a session of one-to-one meetings and last but not least - an opportunity for the filmmakers to pitch their projects to their potential audience - children. Also, recognizing the potential of the Baltic region in the tech domain, the FORUM will take on content creation in virtual reality (VR) medium, whose growth nowadays is more than fast paced. Therefore the festival, in cooperation with interactive media production company Story Hub and start-up community holders Riga Tech Hub Riga present RIGA IFF GOES VR - series of inspirational talks and hackathon. It will challenge the local tech minds to join the most idealistic creative ideas, in order to create a brand new audiovisual product for children’s educational purposes.

Why VR? Making with meaning
Emotions in interactive virtual experiences
Artist collective’s The OthVRs approach to VR and what they find exciting about the industry, including predictions about the future of the medium relating to how it differs from the traditional cinema and how 360˚ filmmaking uses theatre and installation art techniques as well as technical skills. The creative duo will present case studies that might be used in educational settings and encourage newcomers to engage in VR.
There is a gap between the emotional experience then watching a movie and playing a video game. There are certain emotions that work better in games. Fear is one of them. But also pride, guilt and anger work quite well. On the other hand love, sadness and more empathic emotions are stronger in movies. Both mediums seem to draw emotions from a different pallet.
Tessa Ratuszynska Price and Fiona Frances Nicholson Artists and filmmakers at The OthVRs The creative duo represent The OthVRs which is an open 360˚/ VR/ XR collaborative group based in Bristol. Their aim is to encourage a broader and inclusive spectrum of individuals within this emerging media by democratising access to materials, funding and resources.

About the production company
Encouraged by their teacher Janek, two 13-year-old boys Oliver and Sass create an ingenious new product – a nose-shaped glasses holder – that unexpectedly draws the attention of a major investor. Meanwhile, Oliver’s father Artur who was laid off work is looking for a new respectable job. At the same time, the boys must meet with the investor. However, they realise that they are too young to do business by themselves – it’s highly unlikely that an investor would give two teenagers 100 000 euros! Therefore Oliver gets an idea on how to kill two birds with one stone – they hire Oliver’s father to run their company. He will meet with the investor and get the necessary funding for their business. The catch is that Oliver’s father doesn’t know he’s working for his son and Sass.

THE NAP
Synopsis
About the production company
The city is in a crisis of creative ideas, meanwhile rascal Antons (~6) has to change kindergartens once again. However, this time the boy’s rebellious and curious spirit lets him unveil a shocking secret – turns out that the new kindergarten is not just a kindergarten but a secret project of the ‘creative industries’ designed to solve the deficiency of imagination and original ideas by stealing children’s dreams while they are napping.

This will be our second animation project, but we have used lot of animated elements to enhance the stories in our documentaries.
About the director Nils Skapans is experienced artist, he have directed more than 30 animations. I like today’s technologies and the opportunities they give. And I also use them. But I must say that it is often because I have to and not because I want to. It is all good but... sometimes it makes me sick to think about how involved, addicted and calculatable we have become. It is stupid that a software can calculate what we want and, what is even crazier, that it knows how to make us get something we do not need. I might be naive but I believe in one’s common sense, fantasy and natural rowdiness that does not succumb to this ‘artificial intellect’. And that is what my new movie will be about. He says: ‘It will not save or even change the world, but at least I will have expressed my point of view.’

SECRET SOCIETY OF SOUPTOWN AND THE CUCUMBER MAFIA
Synopsis
About the production company
When children begin acting strangely for no apparent reason, Mari, Anton, Olav and Sadu aka The Secret Society of Souptown find themselves in the middle of a mystery that’s threatening the whole city.
Since 2009, Nafta Films has been producing audiovisual content of all forms (film, TV productions, TV commercials). The first feature film produced by Nafta Films, the family adventure film ‘Secret Society of Souptown’, rapidly ascended to become Estonia’s most watched family film of all time and subsequently was sold by Beta Film to eight countries and to Netflix U.S.A. Nafta Films has produced and participated in the production of several television serials (‘After school’, produced for the Russian market in cooperation with Walt Disney Productions, and the science fiction serial ‘IT Planet’ in co-production with the Estonian National Broadcasting Corporation). On top of this, they have internationally co-produced two feature films and numerous short films.
About the director Their team were all very closely tied in with the birth of the Secret Society of Souptown film. It can be said that Oskar found those wonderful little actors out of over five thousand children, Helen as a fragile woman directed the masses of people when the more large-scale scenes were shot, and Margus directed the film. This time the roles are changing. Oskar and Helen will be directing and Margus will be active in the background. This fact leads them to the main theme of this future serial. Times and things change and although this can at times be difficult, it is always necessary for something.

EUROPEAN SCRIPT MEETING At RIGA IFF, we believe everything that happens is a story, and anything that can be told can become a film and create hundreds of new stories each time it is screened – no matter how and where the screening takes place. European Script Meeting encourages new international partnerships among screenwriters and creative film crews looking for writing professionals – screenwriters, co-writers, editors, consultants, doctors, analysts, mentors etc. During the event, select participating authors of film projects and project ideas
from all over Europe will get to meet with screenwriting professionals and discuss their potential collaboration in the nearest future. The event is structured as individual one-on-one meetings – however, to provide a productive setting for shaping new ideas at the conception stage, crossover meetings and participant brainstorming are encouraged. SHORT RIGA DISCUSSIONS Short Riga discussions are based on the hot issues of the short film genre. The format of the discussions reflects its purpose: to create a place and chance to discuss topics brought up in the hallways of film theatres during the film festival informally but concisely. It is also a chance for people to meet.
We hope to introduce the guests of the festival with local professionals, institutions and urban environment of Riga. We have planned three discussions in different formats and places that are chosen in line with the particular theme.

Saturday, 27 Oct. Panel discussion: Premiere status of a short film 12.00 - 13.30 Cafe Film Noir Free admission
ROUNDTABLE Socially active film. Too much or not enough? The more we know, the more concerned we become on the problems and injustice in the world. A large part of the society is able to and shares their worries with others. And short film as a format, being one of the zeitgeist manifestations, shows a high number of socially active films in festival line-ups. What is happening to the films with no specific issue to address?
DISCUSSION Silver screen after VR Looking from the perspective of art history, every new media has an impact on its predecessor. Photography liberated painting and digital video pushed the film stock into a relative oblivion, now revived by analogue filmmakers/artists. By looking at history and actual practice of contemporary artists, we would like to speculate on the possible impact of VR on film as an art and entertainment form in future.

One of his talks is targeted at professional film critics and those interested in the craft; another is suitable for educators, covering audiovisual literacy topics; and a third is intended for people who would like to find out more about film criticism but have no prior experience.
Criticism is dead, long live criticism! As arts and culture continue to suffer under global austerity and the neoliberalisation of labour, film critics are feeling the pinch: while the industry celebrates advances in diversity and the idea that more and more people have access to the cultural means of production, criticism itself seems to no longer be a valid or sustainable vocation. Was it ever? This talk asks: if everyone’s a critic, what does it actually mean to be critical?
Class Critique: How Film Can Enhance and Sharpen Critical Learning Cinema is a social medium: from its very conception to the present-day, the entertainment industrial complex has informed social attitudes and cultural values on a wide scale. This talk argues that, by adopting a critical attitude to the cinema, and by incorporating it into the classroom, we can help develop and sharpen young people’s critical thinking — not to promote individual ideas or ideologies, but to foster more reflexive critical relationships to the art that we consume in a supportive learning environment.
Forever Young: Criticism as a Permanent Practice What’s the difference between a film reviewer and a film critic? Who gets to decide this difference? What does being a critic actually mean? As more and more young people pursue film criticism as an interest and also a profession, these and many more questions are gaining importance. This talk will argue for criticism as a means of ‘staying young’, dispelling certain myths behind the practicalities of being a film critic along the way, and suggest some potential starting points for ‘making it’.
Michael Pattison Writer, programmer, teacher and filmmaker from Gateshead, UK Michaels’ criticism has been published by Sight & Sound, RogerEbert.com, Reverse Shot and MUBI Notebook, among others, and he is a member of the programming team at Alchemy Film & Moving Image Festival in Hawick, Scotland. He has tutored workshops for early-career critics at several film festivals, including Karlovy Vary, Warsaw, Dokufest (Prizren) and Black Nights (Tallinn). He is currently a PhD candidate in film practice at Newcastle University, where his research responds to landscape, structural film and walking as a mode of urban engagement.

DISCUSSION What to do with film criticism?
Since the beginning of Riga IFF CRITICS MEETING we have talked mostly about ways how to improve film criticism, as well as the role of criticism in the contemporary society. This time, we want to focus on the next main question: what to do with (film) criticism? The reaction to a work of art, such as a film, becomes a historical document on its own, just like the criticism in its various forms, making one wonder: what can one do with criticism today, tomorrow, after a year and in some 20 years time?

HOME MADE FILMS FROM THE BALTICS
A story of Latvia in eight powerful films. RIGA IFF presents its own Latvian film selection capturing the mood of the country’s centenary: Baltic Tribes – The Last Pagans of Europe (Baltu ciltis), Homo Novus, Mērija’s Journey (Mērijas ceļojums), Kurts Fridrihsons and Bridges of Time (Laika tilti). These films consecutively lead the audience towards the present-day Latvia shown in To Be Continued (Turpinājums) by Ivars Seleckis and the antipodal Inga Can Hear (Inga dzird) by Kaspars Goba. The programme will open with the freshly restored copy of The Boy (Puika, 1977) as a tribute to its director Aivars Freimanis who died at the beginning of the year and who is one of the protagonists of the documentary Bridges of Time.
The films selected for HOME MADE fit in the contemporary film scene quite organically. They strive to speak to audiences across country and language borders, at the same time being aware and proud of their origins. The premiere of Bridges of Time at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, the Honorary President’s Prize For Truthfulness and Artistry at the festival Message to a Man (St. Petersburg, Russia) to Ivar Seleckis for To Be Continued and the selection of Mērija’s Journey for the competition of the New York Baltic Film Festival (USA) confirms this.

13th century. Danish spy Lars enters the tribal lands of the Balts, where he takes part in religious rites and cruel forays, gets high during the summer solstice, becomes the slave of Cours and fights the crusaders. How much do we know about the blood running in our veins? Who really were our ancestors – the last pagans of Europe? The docudrama ‘The Baltic Tribes’ by Ābele brothers overthrows the myths of the Balts as just peaceful farmers, leading the spectator on a unique trip into the past. Historical reconstructions and live action scenes, computer animation and a voice-over narrative by experts in the field provide an insight into the lives of the ancient people of the Baltic region.

The year is 1938. The poor artist Juris Upenājs arrives in Riga from the countryside, while at the same time the refined Eižens Žibeika returns from his painting session in Paris in the hope of receiving a considerable inheritance from his uncle. While Upenājs, in his loyalty to art and helped by the motley Riga bohemian community, is reaching ever greater heights, the talented dilettante Žibeika falls ever deeper. Žibeika’s father has bequeathed all his property to an artists’ competition in which the grand prize is a study tour to Paris… This is a romantic comedy of errors and intrigues, based on the novel of Anslavs Eglītis – a Latvian writer, publicist, film critic, journalist and painter, who became famous in Latvia, later living the American dream and working as a part of Hollywood press group.

Being the only hearing member of a deaf family residing in the remote Latvian countryside, Inga has been the family’s interpreter in the hearing world since the age of seven. Her role in the family has forced her to grow up very quickly and her personality fluctuates between a responsible young woman and a moody teenager. Inga is about to graduate from middle school and has to take a decision on what to do next. Inga’s head is full of questions. To pursue a career as an actress? To become a firefighter? Kārlis’ family is firmly rooted in the Latvian countryside. Gleb’s grandparents came to Latvia only during the Soviet period. Zane’s family are first-generation urban-dwellers. Anastasija’s family moved from the city to the countryside. Anete’s mum lives and works in England. The film explores how these choices made by adults are reflected in a child’s thinking.
In 1944, Mērija Grīnberga was a volunteer from the Latvian Museum of History who accompanied the museum values that the Nazi Army was taking out of Latvia. And she fulfilled her duty by bringing them back to Riga after the war. However, instead of gratitude she faced repressions and suspicion from the Soviet authorities all her life.
The film ‘To Be Continued’ follows five children from different parts of Latvia who started school in 2015. Its director Ivars Seleckis is the oldest still actively working documentary filmmaker in Latvia. His works are noted for their sophisticated analysis of social processes and connect the modern day with the legendary past of the Latvian documentary tradition.
The documentary ‘Mērija’s Journey’, written and directed by Kristīne Želve, is based on diaries by Mērija Grīnberga Senior. She reveals the history of Latvia through the destiny of her family. The attempts to destroy Latvia were executed through the destruction of historic memory and national heritage of the Latvian people. Only thanks to people like Mērija, the vital core of the Latvian culture has been preserved.

At the beginning of the 1960s, when the French pioneers of cinéma vérité set out to achieve a new realism, the Baltics witnessed the birth of a generation of documentarists who favored a more romantic view of the world around them. Kristīne Briede’s and Audrius Stonys’ meditative documentary essay pushes past the limits of the common historiographic investigation to create a portrait of less-clearly remembered filmmakers. Briede is Latvian filmmaker and producer of cultural and social projects, who has received a numerous recognitions for her projects in art and cinema. The significance of Kurts Fridrihsons reaches beyond the importance of his art, because during the Soviet period there were not many personalities refusing to comply with the regime while at the same time being outstanding artists. The charm and lightness that Fridrihsons preserved from pre-war civilized Europe and the free, lost Latvia was a harsh contrast to the realities of Soviet life. He was a model and inspiration for many people whose spiritual world refused to accept the existing system. This personal Latvian writer’s Gundega Repše’s story – a documentary film directed by Dzintra Geka – tells about a Latvian artist, spiritual teacher, outsider and nonconformist Kurts Fridrihsons. Screenplay: Gundega Repše Cinematography: Viktors Gribermans Producer: Dzintra Geka / SIBĪRIJAS BĒRNI
Late 1800s in Latvia. Little servant boy Jancis lives on a farmstead with his mother, grandfather and grandmother. His world does not reach much further than the horizon and his life progresses according to the seasonal changes – from winter through spring, summer and autumn to the day when servants have to leave their master for a new one. The film is based on the short story collection Baltā grāmata (The White Book) by Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš. It was the first film to receive the prize of the Latvian Filmmakers’ Union, Lielais Kristaps, as the best film of the year. Director Aivars Freimanis who died this year (8.02.1936. – 24.01.2018.) was a classic of the Latvian poetic cinema, author of several important works in the Latvian film history. In 2012, he received the lifetime achievement award of the national film festival Lielais Kristaps and his feature Ābols upē (Apple in the River, 1974) is included in the Latvian Culture Canon.
