TOVE JANSSON (1914-2001) is a Finnish-Swedish writer and artist, who achieved worldwide fame as the creator of the Moomins, written and illustrated between 1945 and 1980. The books about the brave, adventurous, yet family-focused and home-loving Moomins have been translated into more than 50 languages and are still in print all over the world today. The Moomins were only a part of Jansson’s prodigious output. Already admired in Nordic art circles as a painter, cartoonist and illustrator, she would go on to write a series of classic novels and short stories. She remains Scandinavia’s best-loved author.

The Moomins and the Great Flood

(Småtrollen och den stora översvämningen) Förlaget M / 1945 / 64 pp.

The first story about the Moomins was originally published in 1945. This is the tale about Moominmamma and Moomintroll’s search for the missing Moominpappa and how the family found their way to Moominvalley.

To celebrate the 80th anniversary of the first Moomin book and the start of all the great Moomin adventures, Moomin Characters and Rights & Brands launch the Moomin 80 campaign on 24th October 2024.

The central theme of the book, the sense of belonging, is the key to the campaign and the values of inclusiveness, kindness, family and community are lifted from the original story.

An anniversary edition of The Moomins and the Great Flood with a foreword by Frank Cottrell Boyce and additional illustrated material is the flagship title of the anniversary publishing programme. Other titles, including a pop-up book The Moomins Find a Home, will be available through Rights & Brands and our publishing partners. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is the charity partner for Moomin 80.

An Unwanted Guest

(Skurken i Muminhuset)

Förlaget M / 1980 / 32 pp. /Age: 4+

A reissue of this classic photographic Moomin adventure will coincide with Moomin 80th anniversary and the theme of Moominhouse.

It’s the full moon and a perfect time to go to bed. But no one in Moominhouse turns out their light - there’s a mysterious and unsettling atmosphere. Then things start to happen: there is noise, furniture breaking, potatoes flying all over the cellar and a rotting smell floating throughout the house. A strange visitor has entered the Moominhouse.

An Unwanted Guest is a picture book by Tove Jansson, illustrated with photographs by Tove’s brother Per Olov Jansson. The model of the Moominhouse, which is two metres high and forms the basis of the book, was created by Tove Jansson’s partner Tuulikki Pietilä, Pentti Eistola, and Tove Jansson. The original model is in the Moomin Museum in Tampere for everyone to see.

ILON WIKLAND (b. 1930) is an Estonian-born Swedish artist and illustrator. In 1944 she escaped the Soviet occupation of Estonia and arrived in Sweden as a 14-year-old refugee.

She was later educated at Swedish art school Konstfack and in 1953 Wikland applied for a job as an illustrator at Stockholm-based publisher Rabén & Sjögren, where she started working with Astrid Lindgren. Wikland has said that Lindgren’s writing makes her see inner pictures. She also derives inspiration for her pictures from real life.

Wikland illustrates in the the same way that Astrid Lindgren wrotefor ’the child within her’.

The pair worked together for many years and Wikland has illustrated some of the most appreciated works by Lindgren, including Ronja the Robber’s Daughter, Madicken, Karlsson on the Roof, The Children on Troublemaker Street, and many more.

Ilon Wikland has donated over 600 of her original illustrations, now to be enjoyed at ”Ilon’s Wonderland”, a gallery and theme centre for children and families in Haapsalu, Estonia.

Over 1000 images and illustrations in a variety of techniques are available for publishing and licensing purposes from Rights & Brands. The text rights are with The Astrid Lindgren Company.

The Long Long Journey

(Den långa långa resan)

Brombergs / 1995 / 56 pp.

The Long, Long Journey (Den långa, långa resan) is written by Swedish children’s author Rose Lagercrantz and illustrated by renowned Estonian-born Swedish artist and illustrator Ilon Wikland.

A story about a courageous little girl’s happy childhood days, her dog, a ruthless war and the joy of coming to a country where there is peace.

Once upon a time, a girl had a dog, a shepherd dog, the kind that guards reindeer and sleeps in the snow, but now guarded her. One day, when war broke out, she was sent to her grandmother’s house in the countryside, but when she arrived there was no one at the station to meet her. Luckily her dog, a loyal companion, is by her side.

Joyful childhood days are overshadowed by an approaching war. The little girl sets off on the long, long journey away from everything familiar and arrives as a refugee in a new country. Will she find happiness again?

The Long, Long Journey is a sad yet ultimately hopeful story. A highly topical story about an escape for a happier future illustrated with Ilon Wikland’s classic drawings.

The story is based on the real life experiences of renowned illustrator Ilon Wikland, recounting the story of Wikland’s childhood in the Estonian coastal town of Haapsalu and her escape to Sweden in 1944.

Rafsa - The Fight for Stonefield Trilogy

Written and illustrated by Lena Frölander-Ulf Förlaget M

This trilogy introduces readers to Rafsa, a rebel marmot who doesn’t want to fit in and conform to roles and rules. She is courageous and thoughtless, selfish and loud, but also very loyal. Rafsa and her best friend, the thoughtful Kotten, live in Stonefield with her flock in a swarming and sloppy matriarchy. In the same field live the vipers, a hierarchical and violent group. When Rafsa and Kotten meet young viper Ziczac, both the differences between the two societies and the evil plan of the snakes are revealed. Their friendship grows, and the three friends realise that they are the only ones who can save the world as they know it.

The epic saga is inspired by The Earth Shall Weep and Watership Down, and in today’s tumultuous world it is frightfully topical. This dystopian story is also a big, bustling adventure full of suspense and humour – a story about friendship, solidarity and about how we can live at peace together and with nature.

”This text, often driven by the dialogues, chisels little animal characters with strong personalities, and plays with the different species’ understanding of language. … It can be scary at times, but it is also warm and captivating for young middle-grade children and older.”

Masters of Mystery Olivia & Icarus 1: The Peppermint Murders

(Mysteerimestarit Olivia & Icarus 1 – Mintun makuinen murha) WSOY / 2024 / 304 pp. / Age: 10+

Masters of Mystery, Olivia and Icarus is a new mystery series, for readers aged 10 and over, featuring the mischievous Olivia and famous detective Isac Icarus, with plotting reminiscent of the classic Hercule Poirot and Sherlock Holmes detective series.

With her nose often in a detective novel, orphaned eleven-year-old Olivia has been nicknamed ‘The Murder Girl’ at the Dancing Crane School for Girls, which her indifferent great uncle had sent her to. So when a real murder occurs at the boarding school, Olivia decides to try and solve the case. The official investigator assigned to the case is Isac Icarus, whom Olivia immediately decides is an insufferable dandy and airhead.

Teacher after teacher at the school seems to have something to hide, and soon both Olivia and Icarus have their own list of suspects. As they sniff around the case, the pair discover surprising common ground. Could there be hope of collaboration between plucky Olivia and the full-of-himself detective?

“When you combine comics, fun and horror, you have a masterpiece on your hands. Mari Luoma’s Romeo & Monsters (WSOY) is a hilarious piece of work.”

KOULULAINEN.FI

“The Passage of Secret Faces successfully deepens the mystery of the mysterious school, but there is more to the comic than an interesting plot. Mari Luoma’s sense of humour comes through in the funny dialogue, and that’s part of what makes the main characters in the comic so personal and endearing. Perhaps what I like most about Romeo & Monsters, though, is the gothic feel of the horror series. (...) Romeo & Monsters is one of the best children’s comics of the moment…”

(Hundra Dagar Hemma)

Förlaget M / 2022 / 150 pp. / Age: 11+

One Hundred Days at Home is a fast-paced detective mystery that touches on important subjects such as mental illness, and focuses on the main circles of a pre-teen: the close surroundings, school and friends.

As the Christmas holidays comes to an end, 11-year-old Nike realises she can’t go back to school. The staring gazes and loud noises of her classmates are simply too much for her to handle, not to mention the strong, overwhelming smell in the school cafeteria that almost makes her want to vomit. A darkness comes rolling in, preventing Nike from doing what she wants most – to be at school just like everyone else.

The town’s indoor swimming pool burns down, and Nike suddenly has a lot on her plate. With her best friend Mia, they are drawn into an exciting and rather scary mystery that they must solve all by themselves. Fortunately, Mia is the bravest person Nike knows, she dares to face both the police and the unpleasant school janitor. As the two friends come closer to finding the culprit, Nike must step in, and overcome her greatest fears.

Somersault (Kollhnís)

Mál og menning / 2022 / 259 pp. / Age: 12+

Somersault is a compelling story about growing up, life’s complexities, and how nothing is black and white. It is also about volatile emotions and the strong bond between two brothers.

Twelve-year-old Álfur is a gymnast from Kópavogur, Iceland. He’s a good friend, a lovely son, and the best big brother in the world. That is until one day his mum and dad tell Álfur that his little brother Eiki has been diagnosed with autism. Now they won’t stop worrying about how this affects their lives and how they will appear to others. They also do not consider that Eiki is still Eiki, their son and Álfur’s little brother.

Álfur’s gymnastics practice offers a place of solace away from the sudden change at home. Yet, Álfur wishes that his fami ly could be normal – or what he thinks is normal. He decides to sneak off to vi sit his estranged aunt Harpa, the once famous gymnast who competed in the Olympics but ended up leaving in disgrace. No one in the family talks to her anymore, but Álfur wants to reconnect with his aunt.

Nella, a high school student, lives in the small Finnish town of Joutseno where the easiest thing to do is to blend in. She loves nature and Joutseno has everything she desires. But when her boyfriend blurts at school that she’s bisexual, it seems to be too much for others. Nella just wants to be herself and live a normal life, not fight for minorities. But is that possible?

Freestyle

(Freestyle)

WSOY / 2023 / 168 pp. / Age: 15+

This verse novel, written on the rhythms of street dance, deals with friendship and the search of one’s own sexuality.

Kai and Mandi don’t remember the time when they didn’t dance, nor when they didn’t know each other. They are inseparable, but their friendship starts unexpectedly to crack as Mandi has a crush on a girl from their dance school. Kai for his part doesn’t even know if he’s interested in romance or dating. He is tired of the assumptions people make about him and in which categories he doesn’t fit. But he starts to think that there may be a category for him to belong to as well.

“The captivating and touching” Lovely” (Ihana) is a whole and beautiful reading experience. The passionate rhythm of the language in the work manages to reach the experiences and the feelings of young people accurately and credibly.
