• Vadodara is also known as Baroda, is the third largest city in the state of Gujarat, INDIA • It is very unique river with its own ecological unique character. The city is developed around this river but with the change of time it is violated at major levels. It comprises various kinds of flora and fauna and this project is an attempt to rejuvenate the river in the best way possible to connect it back to the city & reducing its violation.

2nd Century BC

6th Century AD

14th Century AD

The first recorded settlement, known as Ankotakka, was established on a mound along the western banks of the river Vishwamitri around 2nd century B.C.

The habitation shifted and expanded eastward, away from the river in the 6th century BC and was known as Vadapadraka.

A fortified city, known as Qill-eDaulatabad, was established during the Muslim rule around 14th century AD, on an elevated area to presumably avoid flooding and invasion from Marathas.

4.

5.

Maratha Rule

19th Century AD

The city established links with Champaner and Ahmedabad. The advent of Maratha rule in the late 15th century saw the growth of the settlement expanding outside the fortified town.

During the Gaekwad rule, Laxmi Vilas Palace was built as the royal residency of the Maratha ruler. Several institutions near Sursagar were established. The arrival of railways to Baroda in 1861 marked the beginning of the influential era of industrialization.

6.

Post-independence With India’s independence in 1947, the last ruling Maharaja of Baroda acceded to India. In 1962, Vadodara witnessed a sudden spurt in industrial activity. In 1974, the official name of the city was changed to Vadodara.

INTENT The Vishwamitri river Development project has been in the process for years and one of the proposals which reached closest to the V.R.D.P(Vishwamitri River Development Plan)was later rejected due to its inefficiency towards behaving sensible to the needs of the river. Thus after conducting a detailed study in the selected stretch and understanding the loopholes in the proposal ,a new master plan was formed which was later taken for detail design inserts. After speaking to various government officials who are working behind this river for years a master plan was proposed.

5.

An attempt to create a dynamic compatibility between urban fabric and nature. Inculcating concepts and functions that motivate people to start focusing more towards the Vishwamitri river and its unique ecology. Visual contact between the River and the city, as well as pedestrian connection between green areas and the museum are among main priorities of the design. The design foresees a pedestrian bridge connecting the museum with the Park. In a landscaped roof scenario, the Park and the building would merge creating a single organic unit. An attempt to bring new activities like: Kayak rides Skate Boarding Park Cycling park Butterfly ark and research gardens Rain water collection pool.

DESIGN

• The concept of the main building was to become an epicentre that represents the identity of the river in its true form.

• The envisioned design of a Vishwamitri knowledge centre in Vadodara is of a building formed by a cascade of outside stairs housing various uses. • Thanks to its location the stair cascade is distinctly visible from river front.

• Returning the green cover to the city

Artificial Ponds for sustainable festive practises

• Among design challenges was also providing an opportunity to exhibit those types of art which are usually excluded in modern galleries ( landscape art, land art etc.). The outside stairs provides boundless exhibition potential for artists.

ITM UNIVERSE Central Library: (Enhancing the educational atmosphere of the campus)

Concept: The concept of the design was inspired from the college logo. The library was designed on the basis of mainly the term UNIVERSE-Thus circular shaped plan was adopted for the library and has the attributes slightly of a sphere representing as a ball of knowledge right in the Centre of the site The main idea behind the building was to create a library that would blend well with the natural surroundings, thus the approach was to make it feel like it raises from the earth similar to the hill rather than simply look as its been placed there. On the other hand the main building should stand as an iconic structure of ITM-UNIVERSE.

Climatic Process

The building is basically division of sphere into 7 parts by segregating the functions into the main building and the basement and thus entering the building from the centre of the sphere to make it easily accessible.

LOCATION: The site is located in the heart of ITM-UNIVERSE campus

THE FACADE:

o

The design considers bringing in daylight into the building and protection of books from excessive exposure to sun and moisture as important factors. The form of the building is curved to acquire diffused sunlight into the interiors and also allow for wider angle view of books for the readers. Book stacks are placed at a distance from the external walls so that sunlight passes through various zones like reading areas and circulation areas before hitting the stacks.

The skin is clad in aluminium and glazed panels which are supported on steel frames with a radial triangular geometry and the inner membrane will be of translucent glass fibers and will be used to filter daylight creating an atmosphere of concentration with scattered transparent openings allowing for momentary views of the sky and glimpses of sunlight.

WORK EXPERIENCE

“ I was fortunate enough to work on projects of various typologies like residences ,housing ,schools ,factory

warehouse ,offices

& galleries

both at civil & interior level. Here are glimpse of 2 residences completed between my internship to job experience.”

 MOKSH-A Residence in Vadodara, Gujarat o

(An intimate adobe for a family of 5 with volume play)

 ELYSIUM-A Residence in Vadodara, Gujarat o

(A villa meant to maintain balance between party life & private life within the design)

(JUNIOR ARCHITECT)

MOKSH

A Residence in Vadodara

• The entrance was designed inspired from clients reading habits on O T L A in their previous residence.

• CONCEPT • • • •

As an intern I was given the opportunity to produce a basic design concept for this residence which was later taken as the base of the actual design. The idea behind this design was to create an adobe which is on the main road yet very private. Use of different scale and proportions have been indulged within. Since it is a south facing plot the front elevation of the design has no window on its upper floors and are supported by balconies and windows facing south west.

SECTION AA’

CONCEPTUAL SKETCHES

• The purpose was to have the P U B L I C S P A C E S on the 1st floor which subsequently opens up in a balcony.

• An ELEMENT OF SURPRISE by introducing a double height dining space on higher floor for making it more ventilated since it lacks space on the sides for the openings.

ELYSIUM

A Residence in Vadodara

Brief : A house with well defined separation of functions including amenities like mini theatre, lap pool, snooker room, library & a parking space for min. 6 cars. Hence the concept revolved around privacy and proper zoning of house with a conscious effort to achieve a ceremonious feel to the built space.
