About Riko Yoshida grew up in Narita city, Chiba, which is famous for having the biggest international airport in Japan. Her hometown is a really small city and full of natural beauty. She always spent her time with her friends in the forest and felt freshwinds from the rice fields every day. Her undergraduate education at Tama Art University in Tokyo, Japan was the first step into the design world. Students could pick the assignments they tried in class, and she mainly chose architecture projects and some landscape projects. She had a range of passions from fine art to a rchitectural spaces, and visited architecture and exhibitions at least three times in a month in Japan. She joined extramural activities like Tokyo Designers Week, Yokohama Illumination Project, and some art projects. She also wanted to get experience in real situations, so she worked a part time job at big architecture firm in Tokyo as a modeler. Studying Interior Design at Academy of Art University has given her the opportunity to design modern interior spaces with her unique style. She realized that what she can design is not only modern but also applies design elements from her background in Japan. She tries to design minimal sophisticated interior spaces with select materials.

OAK+FORT San Francisco Store
This is Retail Design Class Project. Oak+Fort is a fashion brand from Vancouver, Canada. They start to expand their field with homeware items including tableware, ceramics, and other various home/lifestyle objects that embody the brand’s minimal design aesthetics. Products have been sourced from local as well as international artists and brands, such as Vancouver-based Janaki Larsen, New York based company Souda, and from other international markets like Japan, France, and the Netherlands. I propose to sell San Francisco local products at this store. The brand will be able to collaborate with local brands, and it would allow expanding design range.

OAK+FORT San Fnrancisco Store l Site Analysis
865 Market St, San Francisco, CA
This site is at the corner of Fillmore Street and Bush Street. This shopping mall is the biggest one in the city. The shop in the Westfield is located on the second floor near the escalator. The storefront and display are too simple, it doesn’t show the brand concept enough. Inside of the shop looks like a second-hand shop because of many hanger racks that don’t show products efficiently. Dress rooms are also just wall and curtain. People have to go out of the rooms to check the clothes.

Shared Workspace And Childcare Space OBI
This assignment is an interior project for the two stories brick building at 444 Townsend Street, San Francisco, CA. The building owner requires the designer to design a shared workspace and childcare space in this building. The shared workspace has been getting more popular these days in the U.S.People who have their own business can work more efficiency than they can work alone at home, and they can share information or opportunities to see new people in the shared work space. People who have children can take them to the childcare space. The owner thinks that not only workers can use the shared workspace, but also people in the neighborhood can use the childcare space too.

People can see the Caltrain from this site.
•
Accessibility is great. People can access the site by train, by bus, and by car.
•
There is nothing that blocks the light, so the building can receive plenty of sunlight.
•
There are no green spaces or parks around this site.
•
The traffic is heavy. There is also a parking area in front of the building.
•
Children can’t walk or run outside because of the heavy traffic.
•
The shutters of the building are closed and there is a small entrance, so people can’t see what is going on inside.

I want to design comfortable separated spaces for each function, but I don’t want to divide the space completely. Why I don’t want to divide the space completely is people share this space together, so people can get more opportunities to work more actively if it's not completely divided. I want to design more open space rather than designing a small surrounded workspace. This method can be applied to the childcare space as well. I think children can feel less stress in open spaces compared to closed spaces because children feel stress without their parents. They can learn and play in this childcare without much stress. Obi is a belt(sash) for a Japanese traditional kimono. We tie the Obi to wear a Kimono and Yukata(summer kimono). The materials of the front and the back are different colors or patterns, and we show both colors by turning the belt out. I use different materials to establish each space, and I want to create interior walls of different height to make the space more open.

This project is an Architecture project for the Bay Club SF Tennis in the SOMA Area in San Francisco. The new building should contain the Tennis Club, which has twelve tennis courts, the shared workspace for six start-up companies, and the short-term residential space for tennis club users. I used sustainable methods for this project and considered the relationship between the site and the building.

India Basin, San Francisco The history of India Basin is a curious combination of industry and open space, business and pleasure. The best guess is that India Basin is named for the ships from the India Rice Mill Company, which docked there in the 19th century. The area has a strong community and many people are members of the India Basin Neighborhood Association (IBNA). India Basin is the only Natural Area within the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (SFRPD) system that borders on San Francisco Bay. As the only Natural Area adjacent to the Bay, India Basin has high unique natural resource and recreational values that include: recreational trail use on a segment of the Park
Bay Trail; shoreline access to the Bay for fishing, kayaking, and other water-dependent recreation; one of only a few tidal salt marsh

I designed the display case to look like milk cartons. I put the "Design Milk" logo on the top pf the carton. The holes in the wall are inspired by the patterns of black spots on a cow. The sides of the walls are done in milk shake colors. 90

I designed the Open Working Space, the Conference Room, the Sofa Space, the Idea Discussion Space,
The Dining Space, and the Kitchen on the second
floor. People access the Second Floor by a stair and an elevator.
I applied the custom carpet from BOLON because it
can serve as acoustic insulation. I picked the pattern
and put three different colors to make a gradation on the floor from the Open Working Space to the Conference Room.

Ella’s Restaurant l Site Analysis
500 Presidio Ave, San Francisco, CA It is very accessible and people can get there from anywhere in the district in just ten minutes by a car. People also can access to there by a bus. This area is combined commercial area and residential area. Many single people or retired couples in about this area. There are a few cafe/dining spaces, but no bars. 109
Material Design l Riko Yoshida
The concept is “Ella’s House”. People vist this restaurant and feel as if they are Ella’s friends. The owner of this restaurant, Ella prepares brunch for her friends. I divided the restaurant into three big spaces. TheNorth side room(Room1) is a livingdining room. The middle space(Room2) is the entrance space. The South side room(Room3) is the lounge area. I used wooden materials for the walls to establish a home atmosphere. I used bright color scheme for Room1. I used a green color scheme to connect to harmonize with the outside nature for Room2. I used a chic dark color scheme for Room3.

The concept of the north side room is based on the idea that space will be like Ella’s living room. The color of the walls and the ceiling is bright white. The material used for the floor is rustic plank wood. I picked blue artistic tiles the color of which is inspired by the ocean. I provided a big dining table in the center of the room. Thank You I would like to thank all of the people who have helped me. I am the happiest girl and I am lucky to have such a great family in my life. You always supported and helped me to pursue my dream. I couldn’t have accomplished these design works without your support and love. I also would like to say thank you to the instructors, ELS supporters, and classmates in Academy of Art University. You gave me a new perspective on design and prepared me for the next stage in life. I was able to open my eyes to new ways to approach the projects. To my friends in Academy of Art University , you have given me wonderful times in SF and amazing memories. I have been able to get great inspiration from the time with you guys. To my boss and coworkers from the internship companies and the professional designers who gave me advice, I really appreciate your kindness and advice on my future decisions. I promise you I will do my best as a designer. Thank you so much, I love you guys:)
