The new building reacts to its surrounding context through a series of for mal moves that ultimately splits the program into separate buildings and continues the campus green from the campanile, across Medary Avenue into the Faculty House. First a general mass of the site is established, lines of force created from the angle of the P r e s i d e n t ’s h o u s e a n d t h e c a m p a n i l e c u t t h r o u g h t h e s i t e / m a s s s p l i t t i n g i t i n t o t h r e e . The proposal was developed through an interrogation of what opportunities exist for undesired infrastructural landmarks that cuts through and defines Chicago. It introduces new programmatic possibilities to the elevated loop by creating a new structure that is superimposed over the existing and imagines itself as the catalyst for eventually forming a continuous band of elevated public space. The program of the catalyst connects to its surroundings and consists of: a gallery that frames the board of trade building down Lasalle street, a theatre notched down through the floor to view passing traffic, a plaza and outdoor event space that exist within the first urban canyon created by skyscrapers.

Passive House :02 PH02 is the second student-designed passive house in the South Dakota State University (SDSU) Passive House Initiative created by SDSU Department of Architecture in partnership with for mer South Dakota Govenor Dennis Daugaard. The studio is structured as group project and takes students through all stages of design: schematic, design development, and construction documents. The primary goal was to design a home that meets PHIUS Standards for passive homes. The site given is directly to the north of the first passive house, located on 3rd Ave in Brookings, South Dakota. In order to meet the heating demand required by PHIUS, souther n exposure was a main priority of the design. Using solar and shadow studies, we concluded that the existing PHO1 casts a shadow over the entire site during the winter season. A dor mer was created in order to reach enough souther n light and it became the m a i n l i g h t s o u r c e o f t h e h o m e i n t h e w i n t e r. I n d i v i d u a l l y, I managed all graphic visuals including the production of 26 presentation boards dividing work amongst the group. In addition to managing visuals, I assisted in the design of the overall house, layout and courtyard while also touching on the construction documents, primarily dealing with the site.
