Growing up on a farm I noticed a lot of ‘stuff’ Like the variety of greens seen as I looked across a large stand of trees or the colors of wheat shimmering in the breeze. What crawled in the dirt, swam in a pond, flew in the sky and where babies came from ‘The Gleaners’ an 1857 painting by Jean-François Millet (a favorite of mine) was the inspiration for the larger fabric print offered in two colorways Gleaners were rural peasants who were allowed into the fields at sunset to pick one by one, ears of corn or glean the wheat missed by the harvesters. I always considered myself a ‘gleaner’ of sorts Barn Swallows, oats, stars in the sky and a mixture of geometric shapes all come together in my collection of sentimental harmony called Sewing Your Oats

When my son-in-law was deployed to Qatar, my daughter made a paper chain with a link for each day he would be gone. It stretched all the way around the four walls of their living room. She and their two little boys would remove a link each day until daddy came home. It was a difficult time for their little family. I asked her what she thought the most significant thing in the life of a soldier and his/her family was and she immediately said, letters to the ones we love. My Army son wholeheartedly agreed. He stated that the happiest days of training and  being deployed were by far the letters from home It has been 18 years since he came home from Iraq and he still has every letter. Several are included in this line.

Nature’s Portrait is a fabric collection inspired by the Royal Horticultural Society Lindley Collections, which houses one of the world’s finest collections of botanical drawings, paintings, and literature. The artists featured in Nature’s Portrait are Caroline Maria Applebee and Gertrude Jekyll

Caroline Maria Applebee (1787-1854) was an amateur plantswomen and watercolour artist The daughter of a clergyman from a middleclass family in Essex, England, her work features a wide variety of exotic and ornamental flowers.

The Lindley Library has over 300 watercolors of flowers from Applebee. Each illustration of Caroline Maria Applebee was executed on small sheets of watercolor paper and adhered to the album plates Each is beautifully composed, and represent some of the most fashionable plants of the early 19th century

Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1942), artist, writer and one of the most influential 20th century garden designers. From an extraordinary scrapbook, ‘Designs for Carving’ (1866-1911), spanning 45 years of her life, our inspiration has been drawn from her sketches within RHS’s vision is a world where gardening is embraced as a way of life – a source of joy and fulfilment, building healthier lives, stronger communities, and thriving environments To achieve this, their mission is to be there for everyone on their lifelong adventure with gardening.
