The Trend: Casual Tailoring
The Key Piece: The Slip
Irresistibly slinky and surprisingly easy to wear, the slip dress is a firm spring must-have. The key to mastering a wearable day-time look is to convey that cool 90s nostalgia whilst toning down that sexy after-hours appeal. Think of it less as a slip and more of a layering piece to add an extra edge to your outfit. And there are so many different ways to put your spin on it: wear it over a simple T-shirt, under a luxurious knit and over crop jeans. Finish with our new favourite shoe, the loafer.
Stella McCartney
As comfy as it is chic, relaxed tailoring with a sporty edge makes a powerful statement and is an easy way to ring in the changes to your workwear. But try to avoid the temptation of black; spring/summer calls for a fresher palette in powder pinks, clean whites and sky blue shades.

L.K.Bennett print midi dress, £350
A killer dress should help you project poise and confidence, and ultimately, lift your mood. A piece that you can wear again and again and still feel polished each time you slip it on. This L.K.Bennett number is just that. Its midi length means it’s perfect for the office and the vibrant colour and print feels fresh and contemporary without being overly fussy. Just pair with simple heels and you are good to go.

HOW TO WEAR:
8
An elegant white suit is an easy way to transition your workwear into spring/summer. The key is to keep things relaxed yet sophisticated: pair with stripe accessories and simple court shoes. In warmer months, team with a silk cami and chic flat sandals. If you prefer to keep your tailoring black, swap your slim trouser suit for a wide-leg trouser or culottes and dress up with luxe fabrics and pops of red for a stand-out look.

Styling Idea: The Shirt Reinvented The humble shirt has been transformed into one of the most statement pieces in your wardrobe. From back-to-front dressing, cleverly placed knots to off-the-shoulders and worn under a silk cami, there are so many different ways to wear it, there’s no reason not to experiment.

The Forever Piece: The Baguette Who said a classic had to be minimal and neutral? Not Silvia Venturini Fendi, the mastermind behind Fendi accessories whose Midas touch transforms ladylike bags into cult pieces with bold colours and instantly recognisable graphic motifs. Since creating the first ‘it’ bag, the ‘Baguette’, which Carrie Bradshaw proudly swung throughout Sex And The City, it has seen more than a thousand variations, from intricate embellishments to the contemporary quirky monster graphic that has become a favourite with the fashion crowd. It’s not a one-seasonwonder and the ‘Baguette’ is an investment piece and future heirloom. Remember the Birkin being worth more than gold? You can be sure that the ‘Baguette’ will follow suit.
The Key Piece: Metallic Trainers
No longer just something to be thrown on with a pair of jeans, high-shine metallic trainers equal bold statement and are a sure-fire way to add an edge to any minimal or casual look. Think of these as your wear-with-anything piece that will instantly make you feel polished yet still not overly dressy.

STYLE TIP
Wearing this trend headto-toe can be overwhelming and you don’t want to end up looking like an extra from a costume drama. The key is to pick one pretty piece then style it with subtle items. If you opt for a ruffle pastel dress then go for clean accessories in tonal shades.

The Look: Modern Minimal
At the heart of this look are luxe easy-to-wear basics in a neutral colour palette of black, white and grey. What makes minimalist dressing so effortlessly chic are clever cuts and contemporary proportions which add interest to a simple look. Choose an asymmetric, a high-neck or an off-the-shoulder shape and team with pure white trainers or pointed flats for a fresh take.

The Accessory Update: Statement Bag
If you like to take a pared-back approach to dressing then make your accessories the focal point. Don’t be afraid of colour: a bold shade or an eye-catching print bag will go a long way in brightening up your look. Invest in colourful totes and graphic mini bags — go on, be daring.

Give The Slip
MY FAVOURITE LOOK I would team this outfit with bright white trainers and an oversized nude coat for a cool casual vibe.
I’m a big fan of the recent 90s mood and the slip dress is going to be a new wardrobe essential. It looks like a hard trend to master, but teaming it with a luxurious oversize jumper keeps it casual enough for day, yet still polished.

My Mailbox: Laura Davis CV Education: Visual Communications Birmingham City University Experience: Junior Designer Children’s Magazines Leisure Receptionist, Membership Adviser Village Hotel Cluster Sales Manager IHG Sales Manager Malmaison
18
The former children’s magazine designer turned sales manager at Malmaison tells us why she loves her job and the big new developments to get excited about
Tell me about your role at Malmaison… My job is probably different to what you’d expect. I’m very much a team of one and therefore it’s about pushing all aspects of our business, from the restaurant and bar to the spa and Starbucks. A big part of my role is creating awareness, so you’ll always find me out networking, meeting people from other businesses and building up contacts. I am in contact with all the businesses in the Mailbox, working to see how they can get involved in our brand. One of the new schemes I’ve introduced offers guests a delivery service, meaning they can go shopping in the Mailbox, maybe stop for lunch somewhere, (like Gas Street Social, one of my favourites) and then when they return to the hotel their purchases are waiting in their room. That’s what it’s about for me, offering great customer service and ensuring that we go above and beyond expectations.
What would an average day look like? It’s a bit of a cliché, but there isn’t an average day as every one is different – that’s why I enjoy my job so much. I can come into work, grab a coffee (which is always the first thing I do) and check my emails before our daily 10am operational meeting. My day can be back-to-back appointments, in the office doing telesales or thinking of new and exciting ideas that will make a big impact on the business. What are the key personality traits someone should have in your job? In terms of my role, you need to be creative, passionate about the brand and be willing to get yourself out there and speak to anyone and everyone. You need to be confident, or at least be able to fake it, and have good organisational skills. I’d like to think that I’m very organised because I like to make sure I am on top of
everything. If a client is coming in, I always know exactly what they are doing because I’ve noted it down. A lot of people would forget that important aspect and it’s the little details that help. What are your career highlights? Last year we were shortlisted for two awards: Venue of The Year and Outstanding Customer Service for the Asian Business, where we were up against Hotel du Vin and we won.Winning that award was a great profile for us, I was in magazines getting recognised, and with Malmaison being in the city it’s important to be a face for your brand. We have just applied for Chamber of The Year for customer service so we are waiting for the shortlist to come out.
‘I enjoy the freedom of being allowed to create an idea and see it come to life’
What do you enjoy the most about your job? I love the fact that I can be so creative. I have a lot of support from my manager and if I have a new idea that I think would really benefit the business, I can usually go with it. I enjoy the freedom of being allowed to create an idea, get my teeth stuck into it and see it come to life. Do you have any exciting developments happening this year? When I started here 18 months ago much of the Mailbox was being rebuilt. Thankfully it didn’t actually affect what we did and we had a really successful year. For 2016, we have more refurbishment planned. We have just given the bar, restaurant and all the bedrooms a makeover, as well as building three new bedrooms. We are also giving our largest suite, Pennyblack, a new look this year too. We boast 192 bedrooms, which makes us one of the biggest boutique brands. The meeting floor is being transformed and we are going to be the first Malmaison to run the company’s new state-of-the-art design concept, which is very special. It’s an exciting time for us as the refurbishment keeps us fresh and very different to any other hotel in the city. We also have a big fashion show planned for later this year that will take place in the Urban Room. It’s a very big client and I can’t reveal who it is yet, but keep an eye out.

Without Armani we may have never enjoyed red carpet fashion and designer fashion on film. He kicked it all off back in 1983 when he offered to dress Michelle Pfeiffer for a Hollywood red carpet event. Though the concept met with confusion at the time, he went on to dress stars such as Diane Keaton and Julia Roberts and the red carpet fashion phenomenon was born. The designer continued to trail blaze throughout the Eighties, going on to dress Richard Gere in head-to-toe Armani for American Gigolo, strengthening the bond between fashion and film and defining the laid-back tailoring look of the Eighties in one fell swoop. His love affair with dressing highprofile celebrities has continued into the modern day with designs for pop superstar Lady Gaga on both her Monsters Ball and Born This Way tours.

Any fashionista worth their salt will recognise the key pillars of Armani’s style: tailored lines, high quality fabrics, and impeccable attention to detail. The eponymous brand has over the last 40 years, become synonymous with celebrity style and red carpet chic, and figurehead Giorgio Armani has long been renowned as one of Italy’s most successful designers.
The Eternal Innovator

The Italian designer has also been a key innovator throughout his career. Armani was the first designer to ban models with a body mass index (BMI) under 18, following the death of model Ana Carolina Reston from anorexia nervosa. He was also the first haute couture designer to broadcast his collection via internet and mobile in 2007, a testament to his meteoric success. Not content with simply dominating the fashion world, Armani has also more recently branched out into other sectors, bringing everything from mobile phones to perfume and hotels within his brand empire.

Emporio Armani
‘The difference between style and fashion is quality.’ Daring to Diffuse
Armani was one of the first designers to launch a diffusion line, originally with the Emporio line which he described as ‘wanting to create a brand with modernity and a metropolitan aesthetic’. With his more recent Armani Collezioni diffusion line, created in 2000, the apple hasn’t fallen far from the very stylish tree. Impeccably detailed, this collection of finetailored clothing, eveningwear, outerwear and accessories has been created for the modern women. It embodies the main line’s signature elements: clean lines, exclusive fabrics, exceptional detailing, and an impeccable fit and finish. Armani Collezioni reflects the latest trends, offering broader appeal and new additions to the classic Armani repertoire. We think that makes it the perfect addition to our growing collection of brands at the Mailbox.

Pretty pinks have had a fresh new season upgrade with hot magenta at Marchesa and matte rose pink at Giles. Our favourite? Juicy raspberry tones in a glossy lacquer. Whilst some shades of red can look severe, raspberry pink works well with pale complexions and brightens up the face when paired with rosy cheeks.

We love a fun splash of colour but spring beauty takes it to the next level. Put your everyday black liner to the side and work a pop of colour into your flick. Yes it’s a tough one to master but it’s worth the time we promise you. Cleverly applied bold liner can instantly make your eyes look bigger and brighter.

Classic red has always been, well, a classic, but never has it been so prevalent as this season. Bright pillar-box hues at Jason Wu, easy-to-wear matte textures at Topshop Unique and silky satinlike lacquers at Dolce & Gabbana can only mean it’s a winning look.

Mermaid Eyes Blue is everywhere this season, from bright electric to splashes of shimmery aquamarine across the lid. If you aren’t quite ready to take on a bold blue, embrace Pat McGrath’s aquamarine twotone look for DVF. Glistening shades of green are applied to the lower lashes with a wash of metallic blue on the lid — a great bohemian look for summer.

Deep purple and glistening emerald tones are perfect for a dramatic evening look, but for daytime, opt for uplifting turquoises or teal blues on the upper lash line. A classic bolt of red never fails to impress. Estée Lauder Pure Colour High Intensity Lip Lacquer in Cherry is particularly flattering on pale skin tones. Rich blue-tones or reds with a hint of orange look best on dark or olive skin tones. Just make sure your complexion is flawless and draw on liner with precision for a super sharp cupid’s bow.

THE GAME-CHANGER
OlaPlex hit the UK last year and has been hailed the holy grail of hair treatments. The wonder product guarantees to restore and strengthen the most straw-like of hair to its former glory.Colouring and continuous heat breaks down the proteins and bonds that give hair its natural strength and elasticity. OlaPlex works from the inside out and reconditions and reconnects the broken bonds within the hair shaft. The result? Dramatically improved texture and condition of the hair with results that last for over a month. ‘We’ve had a great response and it’s just so easy and quick but makes such a big difference to the overall condition and feel of the hair. Anyone who has had it once, loves it and keeps coming back,’ says Qudsia, Colour Technican at TONI&GUY Essensuals. Prices start from £20, see TONI&GUY Essensuals Mailbox for more details
MAINTAIN COLOUR Always use products designed specifically for coloured hair. That way you will get the added moisturising benefits and nutrients that help prolong colour. Step forward Nicky Clarke Stop Fade Shampoo, £11 and Conditioner, £13. ‘The shampoo blends avocado oil and wheat protein which is essential for repairing hair, and the conditioner improves the texture and gloss of the colour,’ says Michelle Hood, Advanced Designer at Nicky Clarke.
DAMAGED HAIR
Dull colour, brittle ends and breakage are the number one bugbears for those with damaged hair MOISTURE HIT
One of the best ways of restoring damaged hair? Reach for the scissors. Even if you are trying to grow out your style, brittle split ends need to be chopped off regularly. Hair masks are also a great way of restoring lost nutrients. Label M Honey & Oak mask, £15.75, contains oat extract and baobab oil to help strengthen hair fibres and a targeted hydration formula that prevents dryness and further damage that leads to breakages. Available at TONI&GUY Essensuals MAILBOXLIFE.COM
AMP UP THE VOLUME To add texture, you need to use a volumising spray. Label M Texturising Volume Spray for brunettes, £13.50, helps to build height for that backcombed effect. ‘Spray it with the head upside down, and it’s done, that’s all you need. Then if your hair tends to fall flat during the day, just spray it into your fingers and shake it through the hair for instant lift,’ says Qudsia from TONI&GUY Essensuals.
FINE HAIR
Limp volume-less tresses? Adding body and making locks look fuller is key
FRINGE BENEFITS Fringes work well to thicken the look of hair and are an instant anti-ager if done well. Depending on face shape, those with fine hair suit most fringe styles and it will hold much better than other hair types. You could opt for a heavy eye-skimming full fringe like Alexa’s, an off-centre parting with a versatile sidesweeping style or a long fringe with centre parting for an easy to maintain look. ‘When styling, blow-dry your fringe in the opposite direction of where you want it to fall. This will add volume from the root and it will be easier to manipulate,’ says Michelle from Nicky Clarke.
THICK HAIR FAST One length hair in a blunt cut will give the illusion of thicker ends and actually make you look like you have more hair. If you want a softer look, a long bob that falls just below the shoulders with subtle layering cut around the face and in the front sections will create natural movement and add depth. ‘But stay clear of lots of layers and razored ends as the hair can look quite straggly and thin because there won’t be much weight at the bottom,’ says Qudsia from TONI&GUY Essensuals. 42
ADD MOISTURE Many women approach conditioning treatments with caution as some can weigh the hair down. But Nicky Clarke’s 3-step Caviar Clinical treatment system, £30, is different. It’s a 20-minute treatment specially formulated for women with fine, thinning hair or women who experience hair loss. The products in the treatment are infused with keratin, sea silk and a Red Clover Growth Complex to promote thicker and stronger hair that feels denser.
SOS TREATMENT The Brazilian blow-dry is like a super-charged facial for your hair and works to recondition and replace broken protein bonds that cause frizz. As keratin is the primary protein of the hair, the Brazilian blow-dry, from £230 at Nicky Clarke, ensures that keratin and moisture are sealed into the cuticle, meaning the results are immediately visible. Your hair will have much more resilience against the elements and blowdrying and styling is made easier. ‘It’s not a straightening treatment like traditional blow-dries, it’s a de-frizzer and can last up to four months. Some of our clients have been having them for five years and are still coming back because their hair is much more manageable,’ says Michelle Hood, Advanced Designer at Nicky Clarke.
FRIZZY HAIR
Volume isn’t an issue (lucky you) but taming frizz is your biggest concern
THE HAIR SAVIOUR For very thick locks, argan oil is always a must. ‘Shampoo and condition your hair, towel dry and massage a pea size amount of oil through the hair from mid-length down and blow-dry as normal,’ says Michelle. Nicky Clarke Weightless Treatment with Argan Oil, £15, is a best-seller and contains moistureloving macadamia and kukui oils to smooth frizz and protect from heat styling. Don’t let your hair air-dry. As strange as it sounds, air-drying promotes frizz as your hair will absorb the moisture in the air and easily tangle.
START WITH THE BASICS
TEXTURE Layers are the key to creating texture and breaking up the thickness of the hair. Stay away from blunt cuts as they can overwhelm the face and you can end up with that dreaded ‘triangle’ effect. Instead, opt for long layers cut around the face. It will create movement and take out the weight and make it much easier to retain volume.
Contrary to popular belief, it is actually water and not the oil content of the hair that keeps your scalp hydrated. The oil molecules from your scalp are too large to penetrate the hair shaft and just sit on the surface. Qudsia Balul, Colour Technician at TONI&GUY Essensuals recommends Label M Honey and Oak Shampoo, £12.95. It’s a repairing cleanser with an Environmental Complex, which helps to replace vital moisture, and protects against heat styling and UV rays, making it ideal for dry frizzy hair. MAILBOXLIFE.COM

teeped in fashion history and with one impressive heritage, Gieves & Hawkes has supplied sartorial styling to politicians and pop stars for nearly two and a half centuries. With a client list that includes the likes of Lord Nelson, Sir Winston Churchill, Bryan Ferry and Michael Jackson, the iconic tailors also proudly boasts three Royal Warrants and, to this day, produces military uniforms. Founded in 1774, the brand’s HQ remains at one of fashion’s most famous addresses – No1 Savile Row. And while many of its traditions remain, the past three years has seen this most British of labels undergo one of the most significant periods of transformation in its history. Former Brioni creative director Jason Basmajian joined in 2013 and instantly helped breathe new life into the brand whilst ensuring it remained true to its elegant and luxurious cornerstones. Gieves & Hawkes’ ready-to-wear range has now been completely revamped, striking the perfect balance between modernity and tradition. He also introduced a new line of relaxed weekend wear, with style and functionality at its core. Basmajian may have parted company, but he leaves behind a S/S16 collection that offers elegant silhouettes in the most sumptuous of fabrics.
A Personal Touch Gieves & Hawkes is undoubtedly renowned for its bespoke tailoring, but the made-to-measure service remains its most accessible price point. Still very much a personal experience, you are guaranteed a perfectly-fitting suit that’s been tailored to your exact taste. The made-to-measure service starts off in store with an initial consultation. There will be a number of decisions you will have to make, so have an idea of how you would like the suit to look and when and where you will be wearing it. Your made-to-measure specialist will discuss your personal style
preferences and requirements to get a clear understanding of your exact needs. Next, you choose the style and detailing of the suit, from the number of pockets and buttons to the style of lapel. Once the detailing has been established, you move on to the more personal side. Handpick your suit lining from more than 21 fabric books, and you can even have initials or a particular date sewn into the inlay. Your measurements are then taken to ensure the perfect fit, and if you have a personal preference on cut, whether you’d prefer close to the body or a more streamlined fit,
The Art of Timeless Style: Max Harvey, Store Manager at Gieves & Hawkes in the Mailbox, shares his style commandments to ensure you’re looking sharp:
1. Get The Right Fit
‘Look at your shape and know what suits you. If you are short with a large chest, opt for a onebutton jacket for a sleeker and leaner shape. If you are tall and slim then most cuts and styles will work for you. The aim is to find a suit that will flatter and ultimately be comfortable.’
50
2. Less Is More
‘Whilst bespoke and made-tomeasure is a luxurious option, think of it as an investment. Instead of having to buy two or three suits that may only last a few seasons, you can buy one versatile and quality suit that will last for five or ten years and longer.’
A Fresh Look for Spring/Summer Inspired by Latin America, Gieves & Hawkes spring/summer 16 sets the tone for a more leisurely pace of life. The junglethemed collection focuses on a tropical palette of olive, rainforest and moss greens moving through to rich shades of tan, terracotta and chocolate brown. Off-duty printed short sleeve shirts in soft silks and cotton are paired with casual cotton shorts and chinos to look impeccably fresh and breezy. Key outerwear pieces include soft, tailored crepe wool coats, micro-print macs and bomber jackets in soft and tactile suede. Gieves & Hawkes spring/summer 16 feels fresh, contemporary and more stylish than ever — a winning formula for the modern gentleman who wants a contemporary look that can keep up with his lifestyle.
the designs will be adjusted to your exact needs. The designs are then sent to Gieves & Hawkes’ UK manufacturer and you are called back into store after eight to ten weeks for the fitting. Here, the made-to-measure specialist makes sure the fit is correct and makes any final adjustments. The luxury of choosing made-to-measure is not only having the pleasure of wearing a quality suit that fits you perfectly, but knowing that you have played a large part in designing it.
Made-to-measure tailoring starts from £1,150.
3. Versatility Is Key
‘Pick fabrics and colours that will go with anything: grey, black or navy in wool is best and will enable you to wear them as separates too. Once you have that in your wardrobe you can start to get a little more adventurous with check prints and a peak lapel.’
4. All In The Details
‘Made-to-measure really allows you to elevate your suit. Don’t be afraid to get creative with the finishing touches, you can choose your lapels, buttons and pick from hundreds of linings. Always speak to your tailor if you are unsure about styling or cut.’

Facial cleansers are now considered an essential for men of any age, especially in your 30s when acne affects 25% of adult men and can easily be triggered by stress or humidity. Lancôme Men Ultimate Cleansing Gel, £22 (1), offers an effective everyday cleanse that penetrates deep into pores and leaves your skin with a refined glow. The gel’s woody citrus scent is effortlessly masculine – an everyday essential.
By your late 30s, your skin begins to show possible signs of sun damage and loss of vital vitamins that the skin requires to stay healthy. Espa Brightener, £36, (2) revitalises dull skin by combating uneven tones. It’s infused with premium Hawaiian algae and wild sea fennel to help stimulate the appearance of new cells. It also contains antioxidant-rich apricot kernel oil, renowned for its protective properties to help keep environmental aggressors at bay.
Exfoliation is an important part of a gent’s weekly skincare routine as it encourages cell growth, reduces dryness and cleanses dirt beneath the visible layers. So when your skin is feeling dry and dead, let Floris London’s No. 89 Face Scrub, £22, (4) give it the burst of life it needs. Formulated with kaolin clay to brighten the skin and blended with willow, blackcurrant and rapeseed oil to give your skin vitamin E to help soften facial hair.
Although ingrown hairs can occur at any age, they are more prevalent in men in their 40s as a result of heavy shaving. Ingrown hairs not only look unpleasant, but (in the long run) can cause severe pain, something you definitely want to avoid! Dermalogica’s Close Shave Oil, £25.85, (3) operates like a barrier between razor and skin for the closest, most comfortable shave you will ever have. The oil’s transparency makes it an ideal choice for moustaches and goatees.
Keeping your delicate skin looking fresh will be the greatest investment throughout your mature years. Opt for a rich, lifting moisturiser that maintains your skin’s elasticity. Once again, Lancôme is the messiah of all things dermatological with Rénergie Multi-Lift Rich Cream, £64 (6). The anti-ageing remedies in this cream treat the skin with an abundance of antioxidants, which will help lighten, tighten and brighten.
Does your skin ever feel parched? Thirsty for something organic? Well Dr Jackson’s 03 Face Oil, £30, (5) will keep your skin moisturised around-the-clock. Its 100% wholly organic ingredients powerfully reverse signs of damage and will help renew your skin to its rightful radiance. The product’s unique blend of natural oils has deeply moisturising and healing qualities that will reduce redness and repair damaged tissue, resulting in a visibly clearer complexion. MAILBOXLIFE.COM

Pizza Express
A few new dishes don’t seem to be enough for Pizza Express this year. Instead, they have added a tasteful twelve to the menu. For starters try chestnut and closed cup mushrooms in a creamy, white wine risotto with parsley, garlic oil and pine kernels. For the main fare, opt for a pennette bolognese with beef, mushroom, tomato and garlic sauce finished with Gran Milano cheese and fresh parsley. If you have room for a dessert, order Bombolini — Italian-style miniature doughnuts filled with strawberry jam and creamy vanilla gelato.

Goat’s Cheese, Beetroot and Frisèe Salad We are so over the rich and stodgy meat dishes of colder months. Spring calls for a much lighter approach. We recommend Café Rouge’s goat’s cheese and frisèe salad. It’s packed full of delicious goodness with creamy goat’s cheese and beetroot, served on a bed of mixed leaves with earthy lentils and walnut with a zesty kick. But the real star of this dish is the richly smoky dressing — plumy beetroot with hints of fruity balsamic leaves you wanting more. A surprisingly satisfying salad with the Instagram factor. Whoever said salads were boring? Café Rouge, Main Menu, £10.50
Steak Frites, Bulgur Wheat & Pomegranate Salad and Homemade Fishcake A menu highlight is the homemade fishcakes — fluffy cod and haddock, topped with a lovely herb crust. The steak frites is mouthwatering Aubrey Allen 28-day-dry prime beef cooked to perfection with buttery mushrooms and juicy tomatoes. The New Year has seen an influx of vegetarian diners so there are plenty of veggie delights, plus there is always the option to add chicken as an extra. We love the bulgur wheat and pomegranate salad. It’s a vibrant combination of zesty coriander with couscous, sweet tomato and pomegranate for added crunch. Gas Street Social, three Social Plates are £16.96
Sea Bass Fussy eater? No problem. With a vast 25 main options on offer at Strada, from seafood linguine to cotti ham and fungi pizza, you won’t be disappointed. The sea bass is quite a showstopper. It comes highly recommended by all of the waiting staff and it’s clear to see why. Delicately flavoured, it’s served whole and ‘canoed’ and is light yet meaty – not overly oily like it can become – and topped with a lovely crisp skin. It comes with beautifully herby rosemary potatoes and we’d recommend adding the seasonal greens for a fresh and crunchy side. Strada, Main Menu, £14.95, Seasonal Green Vegetables, £3.45

Gluten Free
Avocado
It seems that everyone is avoiding gluten these days, whether they’re going gluten-free for health reasons, or simply want a healthier diet. It is said to improve digestion, increase energy levels and even help weight loss, it’s no wonder the diet is trending this year. If you choose to opt for a gluten-free diet you can still enjoy all your favourite foods. Strada and Zizzi at the Mailbox even have their own gluten-free menu. At Strada you can choose from five pasta dishes where they use nongluten fusilli pasta including seafood pasta with tiger prawns, mussels, white wine, tomatoes and capers, or indulge in a non-gluten Margherita pizza at Zizzi.
Avocado came out on top last year as it was named the most pinned food on Pinterest, and it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. Packed with nutrients, it’s said to reduce bad cholesterol levels and lower the risk of heart disease and strokes — it’s no wonder it’s here to stay. If you want to taste the green goodness then head to the Mailbox and choose a Thai green salad with avocado, cucumber, lettuce, sugar snap peas and chilli at Harvey Nichols. Or devour a chicken and walnut salad with avocado, spinach, shallots, walnuts and delicious mustard dressing at Côte Brasserie.
Food Trends For 2016 From the new kale to gluten-free and salted caramel — here’s what you’ll be eating and loving this year
Truffle
Goat's Cheese
Known as the diamond of the kitchen, truffle is still on our restaurant menus. Truffle is a type of wild mushroom that grows below the ground and is richly aromatic and luxuriously flavoured. How does a side of truffle mash sound? Head to Chez Mal at Malmaison to find out. If that doesn’t quite take your fancy, dig into tagliatelle with shaved fresh truffle at the Harvey Nichols restaurant or take it home with Harvey Nichols Food Market.
Compared to cheddar cheese, goat’s cheese is lower in calories, easier on the digestive system and has less protein. Goat’s cheese is also a good source of calcium, vitamin A and vitamin K. It’s tangy and full of flavour and tastes pretty good with everything, that’s why Harvey Nichols has teamed it with its root vegetable tian. Or give it a try at Miller and Carter and order roast cherry tomato gnocchi with grilled goat’s cheese, asparagus, peas and roasted seeds. MAILBOXLIFE.COM
Salted Caramel
Sugar Free
Adding salt to sweet will always be a success and this classic French combination is definitely a treat for the palate. Although it’s not the healthiest of choices, it certainly adds a kick to your dessert. Indulge in a salted caramel pudding with crushed honeycomb, salted caramel and white chocolate pecan swirl gelato at Zizzi’s restaurant. Or try the honeycomb cream slice on a layer of salted caramel and biscuit at Pizza Express — the ultimate dessert for those with a sweet tooth.
Food enemy number one this year is sugar. While we are being told following a low-sugar diet can result in various health benefits, we are starting to fill our cupboards with sugar substitutes such as maple syrup, agave syrup and artificial sweeteners. A sugar-free diet can help you lose weight, have clearer skin and even reduce anxiety. You don’t have to give up your chocolate cravings just yet as Harvey Nichols Foodmarket has a variety of sugarfree chocolate bars from Artisan Du Chocolat.

Need a little spice in your life? Spicy cocktails are the must-have drink for 2016 and bartenders are starting to really shake things up at the Mailbox. Order a spiced pear sour at Pennyblacks with Bacardi oak heart, spiced rum combined with Grey Goose La Poire Vodka and fresh lemon. Too hot? Try Mild Mary at Harvey Nichols with Patron Silver Tequila, Green Chartreuse, fresh lime and apple juice and Harvey Nichols’ special house spice mix for the morning kick you need.
Pulses are set to be the biggest food trend of 2016. Good news is that you’ve probably already been eating pulses for years. Pulses are a family made up of chickpeas, lentils, dried beans and peas. A rich source of fibre, vitamins and minerals, these beans of goodness will be seen everywhere. Côte Brasserie serves roast pork belly with flageolet beans and a thyme and veal jus. If you’re a fan of lentils, go to Strada for trout served with soft lentils, broccoli and baby spinach.

Picture Perfect: How to Buy Art Buying art can seem daunting. You want to get it right, yet with so many modern artists out there where do you start? Here are our top tips on buying smart and the works sure to inspire
B
uying art for your home is an art in itself. Decorating your space and finding wall-worthy pieces that speak to you is a worthy goal. And with a little knowledge, you can soon be on your way to starting your dream collection. Castle Fine Art is part of the UK’s leading group of high street galleries and a great place to find pieces from exciting newcomers to modern masters. And whatever your budget, whether you are looking to start or bolster a collection with a limited edition piece, or splash out on that unique original work, you are sure to find something beautiful to adorn your home. Since the Mailbox gallery re-opened last October, it has hosted events with acclaimed Birmingham graffiti artist Temper and international fashion photographer and contemporary artist Raphael Mazzucco. And there’s an exciting programme planned for 2016. Here’s how to start your own collection and bring your home to life. MAILBOXLIFE.COM
1. Do Your Research
The art world can seem intimidating and a little overwhelming but it’s all about familiarity. Magazines such as Castle Fine Art’s in-house publication Fine Art Collector are great starting points. When you go to the gallery take your time to browse, making notes on the pieces that catch your eye as well as sizing, price and where it would best fit in your home. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Buying art should be an enjoyable experience — Castle Fine Art’s Consultants are only too happy to talk about their artists’ work and give expert advice on buying your first piece.

2. Set Yourself a Budget
Have an idea of how much you’d like to spend, but be prepared to go a little over if you find something you love. You don’t want to still be thinking about that piece you didn’t buy a year down the line. If you’re looking to spruce up your home but have a low budget, consider debut collections of limited edition art. Every season, Castle Fine Art presents the most exciting emerging artistic talent on the scene, and this season is the turn of Nigel Mason’s debut collection. His work captures intimate moments like film stills and are set against nostalgic backdrops of bygone times.

3. Follow Your Heart
Most importantly, buy what you love and not just what you think will go with your décor – it should, after all, have a longer shelf life than your colour scheme. Art should be a reflection of your personality and something you know you will cherish for years to come. Works such as those from famed 3D artist John D. Wilson pictured below will keep you coming back time and time again — visit the gallery to see how the image changes depending on the position you view it from.

Upcoming Event: Frédéric Daty Meet the artist event and exhibition Saturday 2nd April 1pm – 4pm
Birmingham scene
Think about where you want your new piece to sit and how it will influence the mood of the room. The bedroom should be your sanctuary so steer clear of anything too bright and loud. In your kitchen and living room you can afford to be more dramatic. Vivid colours and a busy scene will stand out against a white wall and create a focal point. Remember to leave plenty of space; you want to be able to appreciate it without it being overwhelmed by other distractions.
Daty is an international artist who creates striking sculptures representing urban cityscapes using raw, hand-cut steel. He recently enjoyed a successful exhibition of his collection, Trinity, inspired by London landmarks in Mayfair last year, and is bringing his collection to the Mailbox in April including a new piece inspired by Birmingham. Prices current at the point of publishing.
4. Placement
Raphael Mazzucco ‘Into the mist’, original mixed media, £6,950 From one of the most influential fashion photographers, Raphael’s art captures the human form against a backdrop of startling landscapes.
