The former children’s magazine designer turned sales manager at Malmaison tells us why she loves her job and the big new developments to get excited about

Tell me about your role at Malmaison… My job is probably different to what you’d expect. I’m very much a team of one and therefore it’s about pushing all aspects of our business, from the restaurant and bar to the spa and Starbucks. A big part of my role is creating awareness, so you’ll always find me out networking, meeting people from other businesses and building up contacts. I am in contact with all the businesses in the Mailbox, working to see how they can get involved in our brand. One of the new schemes I’ve introduced offers guests a delivery service, meaning they can go shopping in the Mailbox, maybe stop for lunch somewhere, (like Gas Street Social, one of my favourites) and then when they return to the hotel their purchases are waiting in their room. That’s what it’s about for me, offering great customer service and ensuring that we go above and beyond expectations.

What would an average day look like? It’s a bit of a cliché, but there isn’t an average day as every one is different – that’s why I enjoy my job so much. I can come into work, grab a coffee (which is always the first thing I do) and check my emails before our daily 10am operational meeting. My day can be back-to-back appointments, in the office doing telesales or thinking of new and exciting ideas that will make a big impact on the business. What are the key personality traits someone should have in your job? In terms of my role, you need to be creative, passionate about the brand and be willing to get yourself out there and speak to anyone and everyone. You need to be confident, or at least be able to fake it, and have good organisational skills. I’d like to think that I’m very organised because I like to make sure I am on top of


everything. If a client is coming in, I always know exactly what they are doing because I’ve noted it down. A lot of people would forget that important aspect and it’s the little details that help. What are your career highlights? Last year we were shortlisted for two awards: Venue of The Year and Outstanding Customer Service for the Asian Business, where we were up against Hotel du Vin and we won.Winning that award was a great profile for us, I was in magazines getting recognised, and with Malmaison being in the city it’s important to be a face for your brand. We have just applied for Chamber of The Year for customer service so we are waiting for the shortlist to come out.

‘I enjoy the freedom of being allowed to create an idea and see it come to life’

What do you enjoy the most about your job? I love the fact that I can be so creative. I have a lot of support from my manager and if I have a new idea that I think would really benefit the business, I can usually go with it. I enjoy the freedom of being allowed to create an idea, get my teeth stuck into it and see it come to life. Do you have any exciting developments happening this year? When I started here 18 months ago much of the Mailbox was being rebuilt. Thankfully it didn’t actually affect what we did and we had a really successful year. For 2016, we have more refurbishment planned. We have just given the bar, restaurant and all the bedrooms a makeover, as well as building three new bedrooms. We are also giving our largest suite, Pennyblack, a new look this year too. We boast 192 bedrooms, which makes us one of the biggest boutique brands. The meeting floor is being transformed and we are going to be the first Malmaison to run the company’s new state-of-the-art design concept, which is very special. It’s an exciting time for us as the refurbishment keeps us fresh and very different to any other hotel in the city. We also have a big fashion show planned for later this year that will take place in the Urban Room. It’s a very big client and I can’t reveal who it is yet, but keep an eye out.

Without Armani we may have never enjoyed red carpet fashion and designer fashion on film. He kicked it all off back in 1983 when he offered to dress Michelle Pfeiffer for a Hollywood red carpet event. Though the concept met with confusion at the time, he went on to dress stars such as Diane Keaton and Julia Roberts and the red carpet fashion phenomenon was born. The designer continued to trail blaze throughout the Eighties, going on to dress Richard Gere in head-to-toe Armani for American Gigolo, strengthening the bond between fashion and film and defining the laid-back tailoring look of the Eighties in one fell swoop. His love affair with dressing highprofile celebrities has continued into the modern day with designs for pop superstar Lady Gaga on both her Monsters Ball and Born This Way tours.

Any fashionista worth their salt will recognise the key pillars of Armani’s style: tailored lines, high quality fabrics, and impeccable attention to detail. The eponymous brand has over the last 40 years, become synonymous with celebrity style and red carpet chic, and figurehead Giorgio Armani has long been renowned as one of Italy’s most successful designers.

The Italian designer has also been a key innovator throughout his career. Armani was the first designer to ban models with a body mass index (BMI) under 18, following the death of model Ana Carolina Reston from anorexia nervosa. He was also the first haute couture designer to broadcast his collection via internet and mobile in 2007, a testament to his meteoric success. Not content with simply dominating the fashion world, Armani has also more recently branched out into other sectors, bringing everything from mobile phones to perfume and hotels within his brand empire.

If you want a softer look, a long bob that falls just below the shoulders with subtle layering cut around the face and in the front sections will create natural movement and add depth. ‘But stay clear of lots of layers and razored ends as the hair can look quite straggly and thin because there won’t be much weight at the bottom,’ says Qudsia from TONI&GUY Essensuals. 42

ADD MOISTURE Many women approach conditioning treatments with caution as some can weigh the hair down. But Nicky Clarke’s 3-step Caviar Clinical treatment system, £30, is different. TEXTURE Layers are the key to creating texture and breaking up the thickness of the hair. Stay away from blunt cuts as they can overwhelm the face and you can end up with that dreaded ‘triangle’ effect. Instead, opt for long layers cut around the face. It will create movement and take out the weight and make it much easier to retain volume.

Contrary to popular belief, it is actually water and not the oil content of the hair that keeps your scalp hydrated. The oil molecules from your scalp are too large to penetrate the hair shaft and just sit on the surface. A few new dishes don’t seem to be enough for Pizza Express this year. Instead, they have added a tasteful twelve to the menu. For starters try chestnut and closed cup mushrooms in a creamy, white wine risotto with parsley, garlic oil and pine kernels. For the main fare, opt for a pennette bolognese with beef, mushroom, tomato and garlic sauce finished with Gran Milano cheese and fresh parsley. If you have room for a dessert, order Bombolini — Italian-style miniature doughnuts filled with strawberry jam and creamy vanilla gelato.

The UK’s First AC Hotel

This May the Mailbox will become the first location in the UK to welcome Marriott’s new design concept. Currently operating in more than 90 sites across Europe and North America, AC Hotels is a design-led lifestyle brand that combines sophisticated European style with a contemporary feel. The hotel will feature 90 stylish guest rooms and new-look Starbucks with comfortable working areas. The hotel’s lounge area, AC Lounge will transform into a destination bar in the evening serving signature cocktails and tasty small plates.

The Caerphilly Burger For those looking to indulge, there’s nothing better than the Caerphilly Dragon, a fresh new addition to the spring menu and the winning entry of the 2015 GBK in-house chef competition. It’s a delicious smoky 6oz burger topped with Caerphilly cheese, Dragon Bait sauce, sweet Cajun relish, crispy bacon, melting truffle cheese sauce and a sprinkling of jalapenos. Goat’s Cheese, Beetroot and Frisèe Salad We are so over the rich and stodgy meat dishes of colder months. Spring calls for a much lighter approach. We recommend Café Rouge’s goat’s cheese and frisèe salad. It’s packed full of delicious goodness with creamy goat’s cheese and beetroot, served on a bed of mixed leaves with earthy lentils and walnut with a zesty kick. But the real star of this dish is the richly smoky dressing — plumy beetroot with hints of fruity balsamic leaves you wanting more. A surprisingly satisfying salad with the Instagram factor. Steak Frites, Bulgur Wheat & Pomegranate Salad and Homemade Fishcake A menu highlight is the homemade fishcakes — fluffy cod and haddock, topped with a lovely herb crust. Sea Bass Fussy eater? No problem. With a vast 25 main options on offer at Strada, from seafood linguine to cotti ham and fungi pizza, you won’t be disappointed. The sea bass is quite a showstopper. It comes highly recommended by all of the waiting staff and it’s clear to see why. Delicately flavoured, it’s served whole and ‘canoed’ and is light yet meaty – not overly oily like it can become – and topped with a lovely crisp skin. Risotto Vert If you aren’t one who usually orders a vegetarian main then this will convert you. Super-green yet super-tasty, risotto vert melts in your mouth with chargrilled courgettes and crunchy broad beans, topped with mint and a generous sprinkling of parmesan. It’s creamy, yet surprisingly fresh and not in the least bit stodgy. For a light side dish, the fragrant tomato, shallot and basil salad is the perfect partner. It seems that everyone is avoiding gluten these days, whether they’re going gluten-free for health reasons, or simply want a healthier diet. It is said to improve digestion, increase energy levels and even help weight loss, it’s no wonder the diet is trending this year. If you choose to opt for a gluten-free diet you can still enjoy all your favourite foods. Strada and Zizzi at the Mailbox even have their own gluten-free menu. At Strada you can choose from five pasta dishes where they use nongluten fusilli pasta including seafood pasta with tiger prawns, mussels, white wine, tomatoes and capers, or indulge in a non-gluten Margherita pizza at Zizzi.

Avocado came out on top last year as it was named the most pinned food on Pinterest, and it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. Packed with nutrients, it’s said to reduce bad cholesterol levels and lower the risk of heart disease and strokes — it’s no wonder it’s here to stay. If you want to taste the green goodness then head to the Mailbox and choose a Thai green salad with avocado, cucumber, lettuce, sugar snap peas and chilli at Harvey Nichols. Compared to cheddar cheese, goat’s cheese is lower in calories, easier on the digestive system and has less protein. Goat’s cheese is also a good source of calcium, vitamin A and vitamin K. It’s tangy and full of flavour and tastes pretty good with everything, that’s why Harvey Nichols has teamed it with its root vegetable tian. Pulses are set to be the biggest food trend of 2016. Good news is that you’ve probably already been eating pulses for years. Pulses are a family made up of chickpeas, lentils, dried beans and peas. A rich source of fibre, vitamins and minerals, these beans of goodness will be seen everywhere. Côte Brasserie serves roast pork belly with flageolet beans and a thyme and veal jus. Think about where you want your new piece to sit and how it will influence the mood of the room. The bedroom should be your sanctuary so steer clear of anything too bright and loud.
