Girl Of The Moment Meghan Trainor The “All About That Bass” singer talks Grammys, celebrity fans and size zero

It was epic being nominated for two Grammys. Dreams in life are to get Grammys. And I’ve done that at 20 years old, now I’m 21. To win it is a whole other game but, just to be nominated, for the rest of my life I’ll be introduced as ‘Grammy nominated Meghan Trainor’. All my friends are songwriters and producers and I’ve lived all their dreams. They all tell me, ‘you accomplished what we try to do every day’! As songwriters, yes our goal is for other popular singers to sing our songs, but the real goal inside is to be singing those (songs ourselves). My birthday was everything. I had an arena of 20,000 people sing Happy Birthday to me because of Nick Jonas. Another highlight was performing on Jimmy Fallon. And after, Jimmy came to talk to me and my parents about how he loved my album. I remember acting so cool, but once he turned around I was like… [whispers] OH MY GOD

and my mum’s like, ‘that was the coolest thing, of life ever, right there’. It was huge for me when Beyoncé said she was a fan and Michael Bublé did a cover of “All About That Bass” on Instagram. I’m obsessed with him. One of my goals in life, off my bucket list, is make sure Michael Bublé knows I exist and the fact that he sang my song. I died. I saw it on Instagram and was like ‘MUM did you see it?’ she was like ‘I SAW IT, I SAW IT!’ I’ve been to five concerts maybe, and his was one of them and I cried. It’s the songs you can never guess (that are successful). When I did “All About That Bass” we shelved it and I was like, ‘cool song, (but) no pop star can sing this cause they’re all size zero’s and no one can rap and sing’. So the fact that this was probably the biggest song of my life, it was one of those, I had no clue. And what you hear today is what the demo is, no auto tune. I walked

out of the studio and that’s what I heard and that’s what’s played now. There’s a duet with John Legend on the album that I produced. I was very proud of myself and I thought I needed one song on here that I’ve produced, because I’ve been a producer since I was 13 years old! And yeah, I got a lot of crap for putting like “Bang Dem Sticks” and “3am” on there but I don’t care! I’m a songwriter, and these are my favourite songs so I’m gonna put this out. This is going to be my year to really let people start to know who Meghan Trainor is and what she’s about. 2014 was pretty epic… I think in 2015 there’ll be more special performances like Saturday Night Live. Meghan Trainor performs at The Institute, Birmingham on 11 April; ticketmaster.co.uk

Out & About Where to be, what to see and what to do in Birmingham this spring HELP IS ON HAND Jack Dee’s Help Desk Glee Club, Birmingham | 13 May | £18.50 glee.co.uk Need a sympathetic ear? I’m guessing Jack Dee wouldn’t be your first port of call. For his new show our favourite grump takes a break from his habitual grumbling and turns agony aunt. In Jack Dee’s Help Desk, the comic is joined by an ‘expert’ panel of comedians including Romesh Ranganathan and Kerry Godliman, to counsel audience members on their troubles. The show isn’t scripted, and none of the comedians will know what the audience questions will be beforehand. So come along and share your most pressing problems with Jack Dee - and in no way have them ridiculed in front of a live audience… 10 THE INSIDER

DISCOVER TECH MANIA Gadget Show Live 2015 the NEC | 8-12 April | from £16.99 gadgetshowlive.net

Our man about town PJ Ellis takes us through his spring cultural calendar For me, winter has been a season of preparation for an amazing 2015. The opening of Grand Central, Resorts World and Birmingham City FC winning promotion means there are lots of things to look forward to.

ONE TO WATCH James Bay Tour The Institute, Digbeth | 18 April | £15.50 ticketmaster.co.uk Move over Tom Odell and George Ezra, there’s a new soul man in town. He captured our hearts in September at the Burberry SS15 runway and had us all lusting after his beautiful locks and ‘that’ fedora. Since then, he’s been gaining momentum and scooped 2015 Critic’s Choice Award at the Brits and will soon be joining Taylor Swift on the European leg of her tour 1989 this spring. Catch this upcoming British talent in Birmingham this month for his debut tour. Expect soulful acoustic performances of “Hold Back the River” and “Let It Go” from his newly released debut album, Chaos and the Calm.

ART ICONS Love is Enough: William Morris & Andy Warhol Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery | 25 April - 6 September | £7 birminghammuseums.org.uk Since a quarter of us Brummies would prefer to be with our tech than our partners, according to a survey by Gadget Show Live, here’s another excuse to spend more time with our other love affair. Visitors can see and experience the very best in consumer gadgets and can even take them home. From reviews of the latest tech on the high-street to advanced technology of the future and the best of British innovation, it’s a mustsee for all tech lovers. Don’t forget to visit the Super Theatre; it’s hosted by the Gadget Show presenters and tipped to be the best bit of the exhibition. We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for the Apple Watch.

.

PJ s Hit List

Another day, another Warhol exhibition, but rarely ever in Birmingham! Love is Enough is curated by Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller, and draws links between two of his artistic heroes. The exhibition will showcase iconic and rarely seen artwork by Andy Warhol and William Morris, including the Holy Grail tapestries by Morris and a selection of Warhol’s silkscreens taken from the Warhol Museum. Don’t miss this chance to see these extremely rare light sensitive art works.

This spring, I’ll be partaking in a few more cultural escapades. The New Art West Midlands exhibition at the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery (13 February - 17 May) is one not to be missed. Whilst I’m a fan of supporting our emerging local artists, I am particularly drawn to the manipulated photographs of BCU graduate, Jodie Wingham, which (apparently) looks to turn the viewer into a voyeur. Quite interesting given my time in the Big Brother house. A Sunday in April will see me head to Cannon Hill Park with the family to hit the Mac Birmingham’s super-awesome Craft Market. The following day will most likely involve a pubquiz at Fighting Cocks in Moseley, whilst another visit to the delights of Carters of Moseley is a good shout. This is still cultural, right? I’ll no-doubt be at the Hippodrome in May with the wife as it’s our wedding anniversary and, you guessed it, Dirty Dancing is back (30 April - 23 May). Before my date with Baby and Johnny, I can’t wait to catch up with Birmingham music royalty UB40 at the Birmingham Barclaycard Arena (17 April). I’ve promised to pop into Yorks Bakery one Monday to indulge. Supporting your local independents and 2-4-1 pizzas have nothing to do with it. PJ is a Director at Brum-based marketing agency Bareface Media and CEO of local charity LoveBrum, a movement for a Better Birmingham, lovebrum.org.uk.

How To Reduce Stress - For Good Overwhelmed by that endless to-do list? Harriet Griffey, author of new book, I Want to be Calm, shares her best advice on reducing stress and restoring calm

Finding the balance between work and personal life has always been a struggle. In fact we’re a nation of stress junkies. When we live at 100 miles an hour, work stresses rarely stay at work and we start to function in a constant state of stress-mode and soon, it begins to feel normal. It’s easy to feel our sense of calm slipping away. No doubt you’ve heard a lot about mindfulness: the art of focusing on the present and becoming more aware of what you are thinking and doing. It was the trend of 2014 with celebrities like Emma Watson and Gwyneth Paltrow swearing by the benefits of the practice. So, you want to know how to de-stress? I Want to be Calm looks to help us live more mindfully and live in the moment – and author Griffey, promises it will dramatically improve not just our health, but our relationships, work and approach to life. She challenges our perception on ‘being busy is being productive’ and presents the idea of achieving more by doing less. The book offers

practical solutions to our day-to-day stresses and how to integrate calm into every aspect of our lives.

CHOOSE CALM As strange as it sounds, functioning in a constant state of stress can be addictive and we can find ourselves actively seeking to recreate this state of stress because it becomes normality. And whilst we’re able to adapt to these stressful situations for long periods, it’s a downward spiral and our mental and physical health as well as our relationships start to suffer. ‘How much better, therefore, to make an active choice to approach life more mindfully, to look at ways in which we could usefully instil more calm into our day-to-day activities, in order to get more out of them. Often it’s a case of taking one small step, introducing one thing that makes a difference - maybe turning off your smartphone when spending time with those you love, or refusing to answer work calls after 8pm – whatever is relevant to you.

AWARE OF YOUR STRESS LEVELS

It sounds obvious but being aware of how you are feeling and identifying when you are stressed means you can help keep it under control. ‘So if you are feeling negative but high in energy, you may be feeling agitated and some physical exercise to dispel these feelings might help. Bear in mind how you feel physically can also affect your mood. Low blood sugar can make some people very grumpy, as can being thirsty or overtired. We recognise these things in small children but tend to forget that as adults we are just grown-up children and can be affected in similar ways!’

AND BREATHE You’re doing it now as you read this but you’re probably doing it wrong.

11

Improving your breathing is one of the easiest ways of calming your mood. Poor breathing can actually make us more stressed. ‘Shallow breathing is part of our ‘fight or flight’ response, causing the secretion of stress hormones. Poor breathing patterns become habit, and begin to feel normal, as can the feelings of stress that provoke this.’ Lie comfortably on the floor, knees bent, chin tucked in or sit upright in a chair, knees uncrossed, feet flat on the floor. Consciously relax your neck and drop your shoulders, rest your arms by your sides with palms turned upwards and hands relaxed. Breathe in long and gently through your nose, until you see your belly gently rise, for a slow count of five. Pause, hold that breath for a count of five, then gently exhale through your mouth for another count of five. While doing this, try to clear your mind of all other thoughts or, if this is difficult, close your eyes and visualise a pebble dropping into a pool of water and gently sinking down.

SLOW DOWN When was the last time you didn’t feel you needed to rush? Or the last time you did something slowly, through choice? When you’re always on the move and in a perpetual state of ‘doing’, it makes it hard to focus on the now and you find moments of calm or enjoyment just pass you by. It’s time to reset the pace and embrace the slow. Leave space in your schedule rather than striving to fill every moment with activity. Set aside a time during the day to turn off all technology. Use the time break to sit quietly, alone with your thoughts, reading a book or just listening to music. Eat dinner at the table instead of balancing it on your lap in front of the TV. Make your meal time a small oasis of calm in your day: your digestion will thank you for it. I Want to be Calm by Harriet Griffey (Hardie Grant, £8.99) is out now. Illustration: Julia Murray

Modern Military We explore the trend that marches back into our wardrobe, season after season Words: Sarah Morris

Chloé

Since it originally hit the runway over 40 years ago, military-inspired fashion has continued to be a favourite on the catwalk and on the high-street. Back in the nineties, it experienced a huge resurgence when girl band All Saints adopted combat trousers and vests as their trademark “look” – cue teenage girls descending on their local army surplus store. But it’s not just the style in its pure form that keeps being reinvented. Many aspects of the style are now increasingly incorporated into others trends, so if you’re not looking to go all-out-army any time soon but do fancy a dabble, you may well find military detailing on jackets, pretty dresses, denim and even some of your tailoring. This year it seems that anything goes.

ON THE CATWALK… River Island traditional

Warehouse casual

utility jacket, £48

Military style was everywhere on the catwalks for Spring/ Summer 2015 and was showcased in many guises. At Mark Jacobs the look remained true to its original surplus style with an added injection of luxury – think very wearable high-waisted grey and khaki loose combats teamed with cropped tops. At Gucci and Tommy Hilfiger the look was more regimental with cropped jacket styles in an array of colours and, for those who want to keep the look a little more wearable and tailored, it was SACAI and Victoria Beckham who came up trumps. But you could spot military styling across the board, from the most subtle of pocket details through to khaki tones on even the flimsiest of designs.

HOW TO WEAR…

EDITOR’S PICK

Dune buckle

heeled sandal, £89

For those who like to go all out on a look, there are numerous khaki boiler suits around on the high street. Team with a pair of stilettos to glam it up for a night out but whatever you do, avoid going down the Caterpiller boots route, unless you want to look like you are actually ready to fix someone’s boiler. If that’s a little too Kylie Minogue in Streetfighter for you (although you must admit she did look good), then try a more subtle khaki playsuit with a pair of flat sandals, or try rolling up a pair of combat style trousers to skim the ankle and team with a pretty vest and heels. If military is completely new to you or you’re not quite feeling brave enough to wear it boldly yet, go for a pencil skirt with pocket detailing or simply try out your usual style in a khaki tone or army print.

What are the best bits about your job and what do you like about working in Birmingham? Birmingham has been kind to me over the past decade; the business community is very supportive and inclusive, especially if people feel that you are making efforts to ‘better’ your surroundings. The best parts of my job are the flexibility in working patterns (though this obviously means that evenings and weekends are part of that pattern) and the ability to choose the individuals around me who support the business. Both of which are control factors, which fits my personality. What are your favourite work wear brands? I’m a huge fan of easy fashion for work. I rate Coast and Ted Baker - well-made and stylish without breaking the bank. I also do love my Louboutins to ‘pep up’ an outfit too. How would you describe your personal style? I’d describe my personal style as professional but glam. I like attention to detail but I’m never too fussy. It’s all about smart and colourful outfits. My team describe my fashion sense as “effortlessly stylish” and “business chic meets the right amount of rock chick”. What are your handbag essentials and why? I couldn’t be without hand cream, a sharpie, an iPhone charger and a notepad. What is your favourite item in your wardrobe and why? It’s impossible to name my one favourite item because it changes with my mood or the weather, but my shoes and handbags are important to me because they complete an outfit.

Return of The Mack As she launches her second fashion collection, we talk to Millie Mackintosh about beating the bullies and the secrets behind her incredible figure Words: Elle Sixsmith

26 THE EDIT

I

ackintosh

@camillam

t’s a sunny Thursday afternoon and ex-Made in Chelsea star turned fashion designer, Millie Mackintosh, is revealing her guilty pleasures: ‘I love chocolate brownie and salted caramel ice cream, but pasta with truffle is my absolute favourite.’ It’s hard to imagine the woman with one of the most envied bodies in showbiz, who regularly posts clips of punishing workouts on Instagram – devouring a big tub of Ben & Jerry’s. But she saves those indulgences for the weekend. During the week, Millie is a walking poster for healthy living. Whilst she strictly avoids all fried and processed foods, she insists she doesn’t feel like she’s depriving herself and, contrary to popular belief, she never diets. ‘It’s more of a lifestyle change,’ explains Millie. ‘I’ve just adopted a way of eating that works for me. If I really want pasta, I’ll just make courgetties (courgette spirals) with my favourite pasta sauce and then I’ll have the real thing on the weekend. It’s just tricking your mind and body into thinking you’re getting the thing you’re craving, without actually eating it.’ Scrawl through Millie’s Instagram and you’ll find lots of healthy salads and smoothies alongside big bowls of pasta and roast dinners. She says

it’s what British rapper, Professor Green, and husband of over a year is best at. But has she managed to convert him to her way of eating? ‘Stephen is totally into his own thing foodwise and he’s actually really good at cooking.

“ I’m all about promoting health and fitness, not for vanity, but just because everyone should have a healthy and balanced lifestyle ” He does a lot of roasts, he’s very good at that.’ Size eight Millie, who said she ‘couldn’t even do two sit ups’ before she started going to the gym, now loves to mix up her workouts with lots of cardio and regularly trains with her personal

trainers Russell Bateman and Richard Tidmarsh from the Skinny Bitch Collective. ‘We do lots of crawling on the floor and trying to smack each other’s arses - it’s really good fun,’ she says enthusiastically. ‘I like the idea of working out with your friends. ‘I feel so much stronger now (since starting exercising) and I know whatever workout I’m doing, I’m always improving my fitness. I find it really hard to get muscly so for me, I’m working on my posture, getting stronger and the areas I want to keep toned like my bum, legs and arms. I’m making sure I’m constantly in shape because that’s my job.’ Millie’s naturally slim frame has often been the subject of national comment. Whilst she’s always maintained a ‘strong not skinny’ mantra, cyber-trolls have criticised her for being ‘too thin’ and labelled her a bad role model for girls. But it’s clear to see that she’s comfortable in her own skin - having recently posed naked for Women’s Health magazine, she says she doesn’t let the trolls get her down but there should be more being done to control it. ‘It’s very cowardly and it’s no reflection of me, it’s just how that person is feeling when they’re saying those negative things,’ she says matter-offactly. ‘I think it’s just pathetic and sad, but it can be so horrible for people it does affect and there should be more done online to tackle it. But I p

just ignore it and rise above it.’ Earlier this month, Millie partnered with Reebok for the #BreakYourSelfie campaign to encourage women to ‘Be More Human’ and rebel against the posed, pouty selfies and instead, post pictures of themselves in their most raw and sweaty, post-workout state. Millie took to Instagram and received 8650 likes for her sweaty selfie. ‘It’s a really important campaign because it encourages women to have a really hard work out. Don’t go to the gym and just pose. Go to the gym, work your arse off and take a sweaty selfie. It’s definitely a positive message.’ Millie’s debut AW collection launched last September and received such a high volume of visitors that the site crashed just moments after launching – and as we speak to Millie just 24 hours after her latest fashion launch, it seems that the response this time around has been no different. ‘Some things are already selling out online and the website is going crazy and it’s already crashed,’ says Millie. ‘Everyone is saying it’s really boho, which is really my signature style. It’s been a really nice development from the first line. The first season I was testing the water and I feel like this time I’ve been more confident with my designs and it’s even more my style.’ Not that this is surprising at all. It would be fair to say that Millie is one of the most successful stars to emerge from reality TV. Since leaving Made in Chelsea, the show that made her famous in 2013, Millie’s career has gone from strength to strength. She has a successful range of false lashes under her belt and a popular style blog - it seems things are only getting better. ‘The last year has been crazy for me. I’m in a position now where I want to work on less projects and be really committed to the projects that I do take on,’ says Millie. ‘I’m already

designing for AW now and there are lots of offers on the table, it’s just deciding what to do. I think that’s a very good position to be in. I’m 25 years old and I’ve definitely ticked off a lot of things that I wanted to do.’ And there’s even more exciting news as Millie shares the latest on her newest venture - a debut lifestyle book which will be released within the next few weeks. ‘The book is going to be a guide to what works for me in terms of food, fashion and fitness and beauty,’ she explains. ‘It will be tips and advice on things that have been passed down to me as well as lots of healthy recipes, work-outs you can do at home and personal style tips. I work with amazing personal trainers, make-up artists and stylists all the time, so I’m constantly picking up knowledge from them and so I’m passing it on.’ This fashion season proved to be a turning point for Millie as she joined the ranks of the British fashion pack and became a regular on the front row. On the second day at Julien McDonald, she rubbed shoulders with Whitney Port and by the fourth day at Giles Deacon, she was sitting shoulder to shoulder with Amber and Yasmin Le Bon. ‘I was really lucky at London Fashion Week to have designers like Giles Deacon, Julien McDonald and Felder Felder dress me for their front-row – they’re some of my favourite designers. But since then, I’ve been really focused on my launch and my collection. Although it’s great having designers to dress me for things like red carpet events, I just really

. illie s SS15 favourites

want to work on my collection.’ Reality TV celeb turned bonafide fashion designer is notoriously hard to nail and actually make a success of it. But it looks like she’s on the right track as just about everyone wants to emulate her style. The next Olivia Palermo? She names her as one of her fashion icons, but we think Millie has great style that’s all her own. y Millie Mackintosh Collection is available from millie-mackintosh.com

Hydration heroes, green wonders and solutions to skin pollution - this spring is all about the multi-taskers

SKIN QUENCHER If a product claims to increase our skin’s hydration by 215% after just one week, then we’re sure going to give it a good go. bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream, £26, combines the best of BB, CC and tinted moisturisers, for a dewy light-medium coverage whilst the formula of hydrating humectants and marine botanicals quench thirsty skin. This multitasker has SPF 30 and new buzz ingredient, heart-leaf globe daisy, an antioxidant which helps protect against environmental stressors.

Eco-beauties rejoice! Green brand O’right have launched a new range of coffee-based products. Rich in antioxidants, Recoffee body wash, £17.50, at Harvey Nichols, uses 100% recycled coffee grounds collected from Starbucks and other coffee shops in Taiwan. The best bit? Like all other O’right Tree in The Bottle products, once you’re finished with the bottle, you can plant it in the ground and in a matter of months it will biodegrade and you’ll get a sprouting coffee tree. The environment thanks you.

THE PICK-ME-UP Who doesn’t want a healthy glow at this time of year? Or at any time of year for that matter. But to get this much coveted glow, we’d usually have to use a combination of product. The six shade mix in Bobbi Brown’s new Brightening Brick Powders, £33, pull together the warmth of a bronzer and illuminating sheen of a highlighter to create a natural, healthy glow.

SKIN SHEILD

NAIL IT We expect a lot from our nail polish. Not only should it stay chip-free for at least seven days, with all the latest beauty innovations, it should now be good for us. Nails inc’s NailKale line is formulated with the antioxidants found in kale and a regenerating complex which boosts keratin production for stronger nails. You’ll want all three of the new spring shades, fresh pink (Marylebone High Street), pretty lilac (Abbey Road) and punchy coral (Hampstead Grove), £14 each.

New research shows that nine in ten of us are exposed to highly polluted air, which in the long-term accelerates skin ageing. And worse news for us in Birmingham, we’re high on the list of cities with unsafe pollution levels. Time to city-proof our skin. Clarins UV Anti-Pollution Day Screen SPF 50, £32, has a powerful anti-pollution complex that acts as an environmental shield. It’s infrared protection controls shine and lightweight formula gives a lovely silky finish which acts as a great primer.

All About That Base

BEST FOR: SPOT PRONE SKIN Clinique’s latest offering, Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer, £25 from House of Fraser (5), provides a completely full coverage. It’s perfect for concealing any blemishes and gives you a flawless base that lasts a night of partying.

1

BEST FOR: BRIDES Beautiful brides deserve beautiful photos, and NARS Sheer Glow, £31, Space NK at Harvey Nichols (6), is free from SPF, meaning that you won’t have any flash back in your photos (that is, a pale face and a darker body).

FOUNDATION BEST FOR: MATURE SKIN

For a fresh, glowing base, I like Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder, £32, from Selfridges (1). This will add luminosity to the skin and reflect light, giving the appearance of youthful skin. Coverage is light so team with your favourite concealer where necessary.

CONCEALER BEST FOR: FULL COVERAGE Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay In Place High Cover Concealer, £21.50, Debenhams (7), has cult status for a reason – it works every time on every person. Even the angriest of blemishes will be hidden through this lightweight yet full coverage formula.

BEST FOR: A GLOWING, DEWY FINISH For skin that looks plump, fresh and bright without the shine, you need Tom Ford’s Traceless Stick foundation, £62 from Selfridges (2). It may cost more than the shoes on your feet but you’ll reap the rewards in compliments.

BEST FOR: A VELVETY MATTE FINISH

Beauty writer, Rose Gallagher helps us find our perfect match

Primers, to me, are largely obsolete, unless of course they add luminosity. Charlotte Tilbury Wonder Glow, £38.50, Selfridges (8), can prime the skin to add radiance or mix in with your foundation to give a brighter skin finish.

Matte finishes are never normally my thing, but YSL have completely swayed me with their new Fusion Ink, £31.50, Debenhams (3). This lightweight formula dries to a velvety finish, perfect for those who wish to take the edge off oil prone skin.

orking in beauty, I always get posed the same question: “which foundation is the best?” The truth? It all depends on you, but everyone will look healthier, younger and prettier with a fresh, luminous base. Here are a few of the products that will make your skin sing…

2

PRIMER BEST FOR: ADDING LUMINOSITY

POWDER BEST FOR: SEALING THE SKIN

BEST FOR: BEAUTY ON A BUDGET

I’m a firm believer that your make-up needs a touch of powder to stay put all day. Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder, £38, from Space NK at Harvey Nichols, adds glow to the skin without any shimmer or glitter, and seals your base in for the day.

Bourjois Healthy Mix, £9.99 from Boots (4), is one of those rare beauty products that actually does what it says on the tin. Wear this for healthy looking skin that doesn’t break the bank.

...The Doctor Will See You Now Dr Jackson’s natural products is an ethical cosmeceutical company that uses pharmacognosy principles (the knowledge of medicines derived from plants) to harness nature’s goodness. Launched after 19 years of research, Dr Jackson travelled to the far corners of the earth where he learnt how the natural powers yielded from exotic ingredients have been curing people for thousands of years. His products are a rediscovery of ancient beauty secrets, but they also care for the rural communities from which they originate Words: Elle Sixsmith

Opposite: Marula fruit used in Dr Jackson products. This page: Collection of Dr Jackson prodcuts

The brand has been years in the making. Tell us about your journey and what triggered the idea of starting your own skincare line. ‘We set up Dr Jackson’s skincare in 2008 but did four years of ground work looking into the ethics and sustainability before we started trading. When I was doing my undergraduate degree I did a placement in Indonesia where I worked with the rural communities on a small Island called Sumba near Timor. At the time in 1992, there was a big uprising in Timor and there was very little trade yet the local people were living until they were 80 and 90 years old without any western medicine. As a young medic this really interested me. 90% of the worlds population use plants as their primary source of health care. Traditional medicine has been around for thousands and thousands of years but western medicine has only been around for two-three hundred years so it’s still very much in its infancy. What I’m trying to do is learn from these traditional cultures and to keep this knowledge alive. For example, we get a drug called atropine from the plant Atropa belladonna, which in Latin means beautiful lady. Atropine is used in open heart surgery because it relaxes the muscles for surgery. Back in Roman times, they gave atropine drops to women because they saw doe-eyed pupils as a sign of beauty. It actually made them go blind, which is awful, but this sort of knowledge got me really interested in the skin side of things. Have you discovered any ‘super ingredients’? More recently we’ve been working in Africa which is where the baobab grows, an ingredient

that now features largely in our products. Inside the fruit is something called a red funicle, which we’ve chemically identified has six times more antioxidants than green tea. The white powder inside the fruit also has six times more vitamin C than oranges, three times more calcium than a pint of milk, as well as being rich in iron. It’s been long used by native pregnant women as it’s so rich in nutrients and the seed oil is an effective moisturiser to protect the skin and hair from the harsh climate. The other thing that I’m now famous for is the kigelia plant which is starting to become a super ingredient for cosmetics. I actually did my PHD on kigelia so I’m one of the world’s experts on it. What we’ve found is that it gives blemish-free skin. Traditionally it’s been used by African women who get dark pigmentation under their eyes and on their forehead after pregnancy. We’ve found on Caucasian skin, if you have dark sun spots or liver spots, using the kigelia stops the pigmentation getting any darker. As the skin sheds every seven days, the dark pigmentation gets lighter and you end up with an even skin tone. That’s really the aim for us, to use what’s been used traditionally for a certain thing and then refine it and produce a product that’s more concentrated. When I worked at Charing Cross hospital in the cancer research department, we were identifying anti-cancer type activities from different plants. Many people are unaware that some of the powerful anti-cancer drugs we use now, derive from natural products. For example,

from the yew tree you get a compound called Taxol which is used for breast cancer patients. We were looking at this plant to treat skin cancer and identified two compounds which promoted fibroblast growth in the skin. These are what we call normal healthy skin and as you get older they drop to a very low level. Fibroblast increase Baobab collagen production which promotes elasticity in the skin. We found that when we put kigelia extracts on the compounds, we got a significant growth of fibroblasts. In the beauty industry people want more youthful, glowing and healthy skin, and what we’re finding with these extracts is that we’re being able to promote elasticity, tighten skin and get rid of dark pigmentations. Tell us about the ethical side of Dr Jackson’s products. How important is it for you that rural communities benefit from your skincare? In 2008 we were sponsored by the United Nations, to produce products that could put money back into rural communities which is really what the business is all about. We spent four years initially identifying 200 plants, finding out which is used traditionally, whether they’re on the endangered list and whether it is sustainable. We then narrowed it down to 10 key species. We currently work in Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Botswana where we’re trying to impact as many rural communities as possible. In those countries we currently employ 441,000 households, which could potentially be expanded to 1.7 million households, so it could have a p

53

really far reaching effect. This isn’t about making Dr Jackson’s empire or Dr Jackson the millionaire, it’s about putting back money into these communities and providing education and passing on this knowledge. For example with kigelia, if this does become super popular, we’re able to make it sustainable so we’re not going to make it endangered. If kigelia gets as big as tea tree, which it eventually will, it could be worth 1.5 billion which will be a huge input into these developing countries. We are trying to set up building blocks to get this whole supply chain working.

“ You don’t need an arm’s length of ingredients in a product, you only really need a few key ones ” 54 BEAUTY

In most skincare products, there’s a long list of chemical ingredients. Why do you use so few ingredients in your product? What we’re finding a lot in the industry, is that people think “Wow this product is amazing”, just because it has 50-60 ingredients in it. This term in the industry is called ‘fairy dusting’ and has no real effect; it’s just for marketing purposes. So what we’re trying to do is say that you don’t need an arm’s length of ingredients in a product, you only really need a few key ones. There’s a new buzz word called ‘synergy’ which is the mutual working together of active ingredients. So when you have a product with 30 or 40 ingredients, what usually happens is that they cancel each other out or work against each other. From a pharmacy point of view, you might have a combination of five or six medicines to treat a disease. Likewise in cosmetics, you only really need five or six key ingredients in your skin cream, which is the basis of our products. Using a pure extract from a natural product in

cosmetics is much more potent than mixing it with lots of other ingredients. One of our unique selling points is our quality control aspect. For example if someone sold me baobab powder, how do I really know it’s baobab powder? In the cosmetics industry, people split ingredients with other things. Like with potato starch, you can’t smell it, it doesn’t taste of anything but if you put potato starch in a product you can bulk it up. So what would have been a twenty dollar product actually you can bulk it up to be a a hundred dollars. We apply a very high level of analysis in everything we use, so we can see that the extract is completely natural without any added ingredients to bulk it up. I don’t know any other cosmetic company that go to the level we do in testing products. Do you find it’s difficult to persuade people to go natural? For me the rule of pharmacognosy is about educating people. I think a lot of people want

natural at the moment but people don’t really understand why. What we’re trying to do is to champion pharmacognosy and say there’s a real science behind this. Just because there’s lavender oil in shampoo, doesn’t make it a natural shampoo; you have to understand the science behind it. For me it’s all about knowledge transfer, transferring this knowledge to the next generation and about commercialising these basic principles like checking the quality of ingredients and the concentration. When I get a woman coming to us who is 50-60 years old and has used only one brand all their whole life, it’s very hard to persuade them to go to a natural product, so it has to work. We have to show that just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s not going to work.’ y Dr Jackson’s products are available at Harvey Nichols, Birmingham

The Super Naturals: Beauty Secrets of the Ancient World As much as scientific advancements have transformed the way we buy skincare, tried and tested remedies have worked for women for thousands of years. Now centuries on, Dr Jackson has harnessed the power of these wonder ingredients and perfected them for the modern woman DRY/MATURE SKIN The Secret Ingredient: Baobab Targets: Dryness and wrinkles The Ancient Knowledge: The baobab is referred to in Africa as ‘The Tree of Life’. The trees can live over 1,000 years and have been long cherished for their healing powers. Traditionally baobab fruit has been used to treat fevers, malaria, gastric problems, and vitamin C deficiency. African women use the seed oil to treat dry skin and protect it from harsh climates. New Research: Baobab has more antioxidants than almost any fruit in the world, with six times more vitamin C than oranges and five times the antioxidants of acai berries. It’s also been shown to encourage skin cell regeneration, which helps combat signs of aging and boosts collagen. What to Use: Dr Jackson’s No.3 Facial Oil

BLEMISHED/PIGMENTED SKIN The Secret Ingredient: Kigelia Targets: Pigmented and sun damaged skin The Ancient Knowledge: Traditionally used in Africa for smooth, blemish free skin. When African women had babies, they’d get dark pigmentation under their eyes and forehead. They found that using the fruit restored their natural skin tone and lightened any dark pigmentation. New Research: Kigelia is rich in naphthoquinone, so if you have dark sun and liver spots, it stops the pigmentation from getting any darker. ‘In the beauty departments you’ve got something called a ‘bb’ cream, kigelia basically acts as a natural version of a ‘bb’ cream. We’re finding customers coming back and saying they don’t wear foundation anymore because their skin tone looks much healthier and dark spots have gone,’ says Dr Jackson. What to Use: Dr Jackson’s No.1 Skin Cream

IRRITATED/TIRED SKIN The Secret Ingredient: Roman chamomile Targets: Irritated skin and puffy eyes

ACNE PRONE/OILY SKIN The Secret Ingredient: Frankincense Targets: Acne and wrinkles The Ancient Knowledge: Frankincense comes from the Boswellia trees which grow in Oman, Ethiopia and Yemen. Frankincense has been used since biblical times to heal wounds and calm inflamed skin. Back then, if you cut yourself you could die from blood poising because bacteria could get into the skin. ‘The reason why frankincense was so valuable, even more than gold was because it’s naturally anti-bacterial and antibiotics didn’t exist,’ explains Dr Jackson. New Research: Frankincense oil promotes healthy cell regeneration and keeps existing cells and tissues healthy. Frankincense has astringent and cicatrisant properties which help reduces fine lines, tighten skin and speed up the healing time of acne scarring. What to Use: Dr Jackson’s No.2 Skin Cream

The Ancient Knowledge: Hieroglyphics show that Roman chamomile was used cosmetically for at least 2,000 years. Egyptian women used the crushed petals for antiinflammatory purposes to treat eczema and skin irritations. New Research: ‘The antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties allow neutralisation of skin irritations and helps alleviate inflammation,” says Dr Jackson. THE PIXIE UNDERCUT Scarlett Johansen’s undercut is an absolute favourite of Nick Malenko (Midlands Hairdresser of The Year). The edgy yet super sexy, feminine style is completely versatile and can be perfectly tailored to suit any occasion. Many of our professional clients at Royston Blythe require two completely different looks. They want to switch from understated, soft and polished day-time, to edgy statement for evening glamour. The undercut is just perfect for this.

HOW TO GET THE LOOK 3. Roughly blast it backwards.

4. Depending on

how big you want the quiff, add a little backcomb and spray.

HOW TO GET EXACTLY WANT YOU WANT FROM YOUR HAIRDRESSER 1. Find yourself a great stylist

ROYSON’S PICK

If you haven’t already got a stylist that you trust and feel inspired by, then it’s time to find one. To get exactly what you want from your stylist, you must feel connected to them and love their suggestions.

2. Take photographs with you Whatever hairstyle you are considering, photographs are the best way to explain what you want to your hairdresser.

3. Book a consultation Book in for a consultation and communicate your expectations and make sure your stylist is aware of any styling challenges that you may face (ie. short of time, regular gym visits etc). Most importantly, be prepared to listen to honest advice and remember that this is their area of expertise.

TRENDS TO INSPIRE YOUR NEW DO As we begin to look forward to summer, we can plan for the more laissez faire approach to hair. Chin grazing bobs like Sienna’s have already hit the headlines as a low maintenance style that can be easily glamorized when required. Off-duty bohemian waves will be huge this season, from the high street to the catwalk and red carpet; this is a look that suits every face shape and works beautifully on all hair lengths. The under-cut is a late comer in the trend predications, and with Scarlett’s most recent and incredibly talked-about chop, we should expect to see some seriously hot undercuts.

The Breakthrough Boys Last year they performed alongside Kings of Leon, toured America and had three Radio 1 playlisted singles – it’s fair to say that Glaswegian rockers Twin Atlantic, have finally hit the big time. We chat to frontman Sam McTrusty ahead of their biggest tour to date this May Words: Elle Sixsmith

64 MEN

The last 12 months have been huge for you. What are your favourite memories from touring and playing at the festivals? ‘Last summer we supported Kings of Leon who were doing big serious gigs, that’s something I’ll remember forever. The last year has been the most fun and it’s hard to pick one moment. We’ve been a band for seven or eight years now and the previous years have been stressful, with turbulent ups and downs. Just being in front of any crowd who wants to listen to us has been our highlight. You performed at The Institute in November, what are your Birmingham fans like? Every time I say this I get a real backlash from other cities but to be honest, we all left that gig and it’s really rare that this happens, but every member of the crew and band said that was one of the best shows of the whole tour. It had an extra element of excitement and the whole gig just felt like a massive celebration. It felt like a real crowning moment for us because for years and years we’ve struggled to connect with people here. Any time we performed at a sports bar or bigger venues like the o2 academy, something would break and it would all go wrong, so to then have a gig like that under our belt in Birmingham, it was a massive sigh of relief. It’s just been announced you’ll be headlining T in the Park this year. After so many festivals,

do you get used to it or is there still a buzz? Even bands who have headlined a hundred festivals world-wide never get used to it. Bands and musicians have a massive amount of control over their own show, from the way it sounds and the lighting, to the venue you choose to play in. But with festivals, you lose elements of control that mean anything could happen at any point. I guess when you’re given a headline slot like the one we have a T in the Park, you get a bit more control back but you never have 100% control and that’s what makes festivals so amazing. It adds that extra spark which is why 120,000 people stand in the rain in a field. We’re really excited about T in the Park, it’s our home town festival and it’s the festival we brought tickets for as teenagers. You’re going on tour in May. What can fans expect from your upcoming shows? They can expect the greatest show of all time. It sounds funny and a lot of bands say “we’re going create new stuff and make sure everyone has a good time”. But we don’t feel like we’ve done our job unless we put on the best show that that venues had in that year and maybe ever. Otherwise what’s the point in dragging all that stuff down and making people come down at an exact time to see us? It needs be the best show that it could possibly be for that to be worthwhile.

Your RAINS jackets have become somewhat of your trademark on stage, where did it all start? It was kind of an accident. I’d like to say there was some master plan. Originally what happened was we were playing the main stage at Reading festival and it was raining really heavily. I thought to show solidarity with the crowd, I’d wear this RAINS jacket I had with me with my hood up to be like ‘although I’m up here on the stage, I’m out there with you’ type of thing. I found that when I put my hood up it gave me a boost of confidence and it was at the same time I was reading books about the history and psychology of boxing. When boxers go out with their hood up it gives them more of a presence and it intimidates the opponent. And the opponent for me is the audience sometimes, because you have to control all those people. I guess it was a synergy that happened all at once and then I realised how iconic it looked when I saw the photos from Reading. It became a thing I started doing and it didn’t feel right to start a show without doing it. The RAINS jackets have become my go-to. They’re good for onstage and I live in Glasgow where it rains every single day so it was a natural choice to pick one that was waterproof ’. Life FOODIE FEST You might want to clear your diary – these are the hip new eateries transforming our food scene

THE BREAKFAST CLUB Forget greasy spoon: here’s our pick of the best breakfasts and brunches around town

#WHYBHAM?

Image: The Botanist

We explore why our amazing city is on the up and up

Let’s Do Brunch

We’ve rounded up the best brunch spots around Birmingham. Pick from decadent French bistros to quaint coffee bars, or lovably rustic gastros and urban cafés. The brunch phenomenon is here

QUINTO LOUNGE, BIRMINGHAM ROAD

THE PLOUGH, HARBORNE

THE VIBE: The fifth venue in the city under the well-loved Loungers group, this quirky establishment is a relaxed home-from-home hangout. The charmingly eccentric interior is a big draw (kitsch artwork, bold retro wallpaper and sixties-style multi-coloured lighting and incredible original WW2 fixtures) but the delicious all-day brunch menu is equally inviting with a wide range of vegan and gluten-free options. THE FOOD: The usual breakfast fare is on the menu but our pick is the vegetarian breakfast with sweetcorn fritters, hash browns, roasted pepper and fried egg or, for a naughty treat, the triple-stacked butter-milk pancakes with hazelnut chocolate sauce, toasted pecans, granola and Greek yoghurt is heaven. Though you may need to lie down afterwards.

THE VIBE: There’s only one way to start the day if you’re in the pretty neighbourhood of Harborne. The locals wax lyrical about this place, and its buzzing atmosphere and urban rustic feel is as good as the food. THE FOOD: Dishes are comforting classics (eggs benedict and scrambled eggs with smoked salmon) but the specials menu is a little more exciting. English muffin with beef brisket and sourdough French toast with fried banana and maple syrup are well worth waking up early for. It’s all very ethically sound too, with the best high quality, locally sourced ingredients. And it’s not just the locals who are besotted with this friendly pub; The Independent named The Plough as one of ‘best coffee shops’ in the UK. Get that brunch date in the diary quick…

Brunch is served all day; £6.95 for the vegetarian breakfast; theloungers.co.uk

Brunch finishes at 12pm on weekdays and 12.30pm on weekends; £9.75 for house breakfast; theploughharborne.co.uk

HOTEL DU VIN, CHURCH STREET

URBAN COFFEE COMPANY, CHURCH STREET

THE VIBE: Effortlessly chic yet relaxed, Hotel du Vin serves up the best of luxury dining. Once an eye hospital, this impressive Victorian build has been a favourite Sunday brunch spot amongst discerning Brummies for years – and it’s easy to see why. The French-style bistro is the heart of Hotel du Vin, where on a Sunday, a lavish four course brunch is served up (think French classics with a distinct British twist) within elegant surroundings. THE FOOD: Sip a pre-brunch cocktail while you start with soup, then head over to the centrepiece of brunch - the French Market Table for a selection of seafood, charcuterie, pâtés, freshly baked breads and salads. Then feast on a traditional roast or something a little more continental but remember to make room for dessert. A very decadent way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.

THE VIBE: The friendly coffee bar, now one of three in the city, was one of the first independents to bring the artisian coffee revolution to Birmingham. With its buzzing atmosphere and cool stripped-back interior, this place is popular with just about everyone, from the students to the suits grabbing a coffee before work. THE FOOD: Give their speciality espresso, the aptly named ‘Urban 5’ a try; it’s a flavoursome blend with hints of summer berries and rich chocolate. Alongside excellent coffee is a simple but delicious food offering including pastries, cakes, porridge, freshly baked toasties and sandwiches (the brie, caramelised onion and rocket is heaven). Not strictly a brunch spot – but if it’s a well-made coffee and scrumptious slice of cake you’re after, then this the place.

Brunch is every Sunday from 12noon; £24.95 for 4 courses; hotelduvin.com

Food is served all day; £3.95 for breakfast toasties; urbancoffee.co.uk

YORKS BAKERY CAFÉ, NEWHALL STREET

BOSTON TEA PARTY, CORPORATION STREET

THE VIBE: Home to arguably the best coffee in Birmingham, Yorks Café is fast becoming the coolest hangout in the city. We love the urban, laid-back styling. The rustic wooden tables, industrial-style hanging lightbulbs and comfortable leather seating are all very relaxed ‘NYC café culture’. THE FOOD: Even better than the coffee and the décor, is the extensive brunch menu. The egg-based classics (royale, florentine and benedict) all on sour bread come close to perfection. And if you’re in need of something a little heartier to cure that hangover, the house breakfast will hit the spot. It comes in a cast iron pan on a wooden bread board with their home-made baked beans which sit in individual little tins. The atmosphere is so warm and chilled out, you won’t want to leave.

THE VIBE: This funky family-run independent was recently awarded Best Cafe at the recent 2015 Food Magazine awards. The extra walk up Corporation Street to get to the Boston Tea Party is worth it just for the home-made cakes and pastries, which sit enticingly as the centrepiece of the counter. Inside the décor is a funky mix of Scandinavian minimalism with retro touches (monochrome floor tiles, red booths and industrial lighting). THE FOOD: They pioneer the great local, ethically sourced produce movement. The brunch menu covers all the classics with the surprise dish Kedgeree. Our favourite hangover brunch is the hearty Chorizo Hash perfectly poached eggs, fresh mushrooms, spinach and roasted tomatoes. If you’re in the mood for a lighter brunch, the newest edition to the menu, the Portobello mushrooms on sourdough toast will hit the spot.

Brunch is from 7.30am - 3pm during the week and finishes at 4pm at weekends; £10.90 for the house breakfast; yorksbakerycafe.co.uk

Brunch is served all-day; £9.50 for ‘The Boss’ breakfast; bostonteaparty.co.uk

LIFE

CÔTE BRASSERIE, MAILBOX

JU JU’S CAFÉ, BROWNING STREET

THE VIBE: Nestled by the water’s edge at the Mailbox, Côte is a slice of Paris. Marble tables, red leather seating and hanging cooper lighting give this place an authentic elegant Parisian brasserie feel. It opens at 8am, so it’s perfect for that early morning meeting or pre-shopping spree fix. Sit back and sip a Mimiso (a champagne and orange juice breakfast cocktail) or choose one of the 12 varieties of coffee while you mull over the menu. THE FOOD: Food-wise, it’s good old-fashioned simple French cooking and you can’t go far wrong with a Crêpe Complète - warm crêpe with two free range eggs, streaky bacon and shaved Gruyère cheese. A lighter option would be the Breakfast Complet with fruit salad, French yoghurt pot and croissant.

THE VIBE: Ju Ju’s café is a charming canal side restaurant just off Brindleyplace. Make the most of the al fresco seating and enjoy the panoramic view over the canal; the perfect spot for people watching and whiling away the afternoon. Even better, brunch is an all-day affair, so turn up at your leisure. THE FOOD: Best-of-British comfort food will tempt your palate. Begin your weekend feast with a spicy bloody mary then tuck into the ‘Eggs in Purgatory’, delicious spinach on a toasted muffin with soft poached eggs and a medley of hot chilli vegetables in a rich tomato sauce. A naughty, but oh so indulgent treat would be the luxury breakfast sandwich, a sweet brioche layered with sausage, bacon, fried eggs and drizzled with creamy Hollandaise sauce.

The breakfast menu is served until 12noon during the week and until 1pm at weekends; £6.75 for the Crêpe Complète; cote-restaurants.co.uk

Brunch is served all-day; £7.99 for the ‘Eggs in Purgatory’; jujuscafe.co.uk

If your tin is bigger than 8 inches, don’t panic, you’ll just need to reduce the cake’s cooking time. Roughly level out the batter across the tin, scatter over the cherries. Don’t worry about pressing them in – this batter will rise around them to some extent.

Instead of cherries, you could use fresh raspberries, blackberries or blueberries.

3. Finally scatter over the flaked almonds and bake for 2225 minutes. You’ll know it’s cooked when you poke in a clean skewer and it comes out clean. If it’s at all gooey when it comes out, then bake the cake for just a few minutes more, and test again. Don’t worry if the almonds look like they’re darkening as you’ll be dusting it with icing sugar, which is great for covering up such issues! Neatly nestled near the canal side, is the new glamorous Everyman Cinema. But what makes it so special? Everyman is different from any other cinema in the UK and it’s the first in the Midlands to deliver a premium cinema experience. The three screening rooms focus on an inviting luxurious environment and superior level of comfort with the signature sofa seating, stylish bar and state of the art digital projectors. Film fans can expect a varied programme with new national releases alongside a regularly updated curated film programme. The venue boasts a

Perfect Pre-Cinema Dining

fully licensed bar with fine wines, champagnes, beers and cocktails and a private bar to service its largest screen. If you’re in need of a pre-show snack, the food menu is sure to tempt you with a simple selection of the cinema classics with a gourmet twist. Food-wise, their speciality is the Everyman signature burger in a glazed brioche bun with a 28 day aged Aberdeen Angus beef pattie which is topped with a red onion pickle relish and choice of cheese. There are also quality pizzas, hot dogs, sides and savoury treats including popcorn, marinated olives and honey roasted cashew nuts. Eat in the restaurant area

or have your food and snacks delivered directly to your cinema seat – no need to worry about getting there early. Everyman Chief Executive, Crispin Lilly, said: “At Everyman we select our locations incredibly carefully. We’ve been really impressed with the redevelopment plans and the quality and mix of brands already on board, which makes The Mailbox the perfect fit for us to launch our first Midlands venue.” For more informations, films and ticket bookings go to mailboxlife.com/everyman-cinema

Maybe even just as important as the film, delicious food and a stress free experience will set the mood for the rest of the evening

CÔTE BRASSERIE

BAR ESTILO

PIZZA EXPRESS

Just a stone’s throw away from the cinema, Côte offers simple, elegant French cuisine. The set menu is excellent value for money at £9.95 for two courses. We recommend the caramelised onion, pepper and aubergine pissaladière with Comté cheese as a starter, and for your main, you can’t beat the classic mussels cooked with white wine, garlic and shallots served with a sourdough baguette.

Why not set aside an hour or two before your film to unwind and catch up with friends at Bar Estilo? The Mediterranean themed décor and dimmed lighting provides a casual and cosy vibe, you could so easily while away the evening here. Bar Estilo offers authentic flavours of Spain with an extensive selection of tapas including meats, seafood and vegetarian dishes, you’re truly spoilt for choice.

If you’re a little running a little late, Pizza Express is the perfect quick bite before movie time. They have recently added some new springtime dishes to their main menu and if you love your seafood, then you’ll love the new Mare Rossa - a thin crispy base with prawns and oak-roasted salmon and mozzarella on a lobster bisque, topped with Gran Moravia cheese.

What’s New? GAS STREET SOCIAL Dubbed ‘the urban neighbourhood kitchen’, the hotly-anticipated Gas Street Social is a new independent and an exciting addition to the existing canal side bars and restaurants. The new venture is inspired by the industrial and cultural context of Birmingham’s rich history. Dining is a friendly and informal experience to be shared amongst friends and family so of course, there are large sharing tables, an outdoor terrace and a ‘snug section’. Guests can expect a range of sharing dishes, grazing boards and locally sourced meats and seafood. The drinks menu is vast and includes craft beers, fine wines and handcrafted signature cocktails. The décor is modern, airy with industrial details and was designed by the team behind The Plough in Harborne.

RED VALENTINO AT HARVEY NICHOLS: The colour red will forever be associated with Valentino, but in the case of this little-sister line, ‘RED’ stands for ‘Romantic Eccentric Dress’. Since its launch in 2004, the RED Valentino collections have certainly epitomised just that. Quirky and feminine touches are incorporated into couture silhouettes, making for a youthful and dynamic range that delivers season after season. For SS15, the collection features playful polka dot party dresses in blush pink and black, while must-have T-shirts are covered with delightful chiffon daisies. There’s also plenty of ruffles, frills, lace and tulle for guaranteed girliness! Products featured available in store or online at harveynichols.com.

GOURMET BURGER KITCHEN Gourmet Burger Kitchen has recently reopened following a £350,000 makeover. The impressive new look combines antique design features with retro detailing - luxury leather, dark oak panelling and printed cork wallpaper. Burger fans rejoice! There’s a new and exclusive menu by top New Zealand chef Peter Gordon. Highlights include the Duck Confit Burger, with creamy duck liver pâté layered with crispy shallots, apricot chilli jam and cheddar cheese, all served in a buttery brioche bun. The milkshake offering is better than ever with varieties like Oreo, Peanut Butter and Honeycomb, and for a limited time, the delicious Banana Biscoff.

MALMAISON The newly revamped Malmaison has just been unveiled following a multi-million pound facelift. The luxurious boutique hotel has added more bedrooms and given many of its club rooms a total makeover. The newly styled Chez Mal restaurant and bar features draft and bottled craft beers alongside Malmaison’s signature cocktails from their Malchemy menu. The restaurant features some innovative takes on classic French art with a pop art twist. Clockwise: Jacquard A-line coat, £735, Brocade top, £290, Mini dress, £455 all RED Valentino at Harvey Nichols, Mailbox

THE LOFT LOUNGE SPRING MENU HAS ARRIVED

REVIEWED:

The Loft Lounge The Loft Lounge has been a Gay Village staple for almost 10 years, a place to meet, but perhaps not a dining destination - think again

W

Slow roasted pork neck, dauphinoise potatoes, crackling, black pudding and cider sauce

e visited the Loft Lounge on a Tuesday evening, it was great to see it busy for what is generally a quiet night in the City. You always feel welcome at the Loft; staff are attentive and the décor and ambience is welcoming, chic and homely. We were shown to our table in the dining area located at the back of the venue. With it’s rich purples, black chandeliers and exposed brickwork the dining area feels instantly intimate and inviting. Dimmed lighting and flickering candles made it seem a world away from the bustling lounge area (although I’m sure you could eat in the bar area if you prefer). The menu has a good but not overwhelming selection of dishes comprising of what I would describe as British contemporaries, with some added oriental and continental inspiration. For starters, we opted for pan fried king prawns in a chilli and garlic emulsion, served with ciabatta along with the Thai chicken salad with toasted cashews and mango. The chicken was tender, succulent and well spiced and the mango added tang and sweetness. The prawns were also cooked to perfection and presented in a Spanish style ramekin. The presentation on all dishes was well considered which is a crucial and fundamental part of the dining experience. On to the mains; the pan fried red mullet was the best fish I’d eaten for a long while. Beautifully cooked and moist with a crispy skin, served on a bed of crushed new potatoes with peas and salsa verde; the combination of flavours was excellent. The slow roasted pork neck was succulent and full of intense flavour - accompanied by creamy dauphinoise potatoes, crackling, earthy, crisp black pudding and cider sauce. The dinner was served with a bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc which surprisingly paired well with both dishes. For dessert (attempting to avoid too much indulgence) we shared the warm chocolate brownie with white chocolate ice cream and raspberry compote - a rich, sweet and decadent final course. Having never eaten at the Loft Lounge before both my dining partner and I were blown away by the excellent quality of the food. If you’ve not considered the Loft Lounge for a dining experience then think again. It’s not exclusively a gay crowd and all feel welcome. The food is far more superior than some of their overpriced (and dare I say pretentious) competitors in the city.

THE LOFT LOUNGE Open late every night the Loft Lounge is the perfect spot for a casual after work drink, fantastic three course meal or even a quick bite to eat choosing from their express menu. We Recommend! MEET HEAD CHEF SAM IDOINE Where are you from and what’s you background? I’m from Birmingham. I originally trained at Birmingham College of Food. After that I worked for a period in France at La Table De Ty Pot in Carrantec before moving to work with Patrick Jeffory, I then returned to the UK. What inspired the new menu? I love taking traditional English dishes, breaking them down and experimenting to create vibrant new tastes. What’s your signature dish? Smoked duck pastrami, blood orange and balsamic jelly, medjool date puree, Jerusalem artichoke puree, thyme and lemon foam finished with coriander cress. What’s would be your suggested three courses from the menu and wine/drink accompaniment? For me it would have to be Pan fried King Prawns with garlic and chilli emulsion to start. A main course of Slow roasted neck of pork, dauphinoise potatoes, crackling and black pudding with cider jus, followed by our bramley apple pie with crème englais. What your vision for Loft Lounge? The vision is eventually to take our restaurant at the Loft Lounge to rosette standard.

86 LIFE

Home to a burgeoning food scene and hailed by the likes of the New York Times, and travel guidebook Rough Guides; Birmingham is enjoying a culinary renaissance. The city’s foodscape has taken off in a big way, and with a tantalizing array of new eateries opening this spring, there’s something to satisfy just about any craving. We serve up some of our favourite spots making a debut this spring Words: Rabia Raza

A SPICE HAVEN Try: Praza by Pushkar Following the success of the award-winning Broad Street restaurant Pushkar, director Rai Singh has added a new venture to his line-up of Punjabi fine dining. The newly opened restaurant in Edgbaston continues Pushkar’s celebration of modern north Indian cuisine with a menu masterminded by head chef, Bishal Rasaily. The restaurant boasts a luxury interior with art deco inspired designs, monochrome colour schemes, and glass and chrome details. Expect a sophisticated spread of contemporary Indian cuisine enriched with intricate spicing for layers of developing flavour.

COMFORT FOOD Try: The Botanist Described by the general manager Julian Rose-Gibbs, as a “home-from-home”, The Botanist on Temple Street offers good, honest food from its deli and rotisserie. The menu is brimming with home comforts, including bangers and mash, fish and chips, and steak and ale pie. Famous for their botanical cocktails, you can expect quirky combos like Chilli and Chive Martinis, to Cherry and Sage Slings, as well as cask ales and ciders. Complete with live entertainment daily, we’re tipping The Botanist as the ultimate post-work, kick-back hot-spot.

AN ELEGANT AFFAIR Try: The Restaurant at The Edgbaston The Restaurant is the latest addition to The Edgbaston; a boutique hotel and cocktail lounge located in – you guessed it – Edgbaston. The Restaurant has launched just in time for spring, and offers a sophisticated menu within a chic art-deco inspired dining setting. There is no shortage of attention to deal at The Edgbaston, and diners can expect a unique food experience bursting with new flavours, and all wrapped-up in a show of playful presentation. Post-meal, the three black and gold, 1920’s

inspired cocktail bars within the hotel, will ensure the night is forever young!

PARTY CENTRAL Try: Gas Street Social The wait is finally over as the latest edition to the Mailbox’s eclectic mix of culinary credentials opens. Taking over the former Bar Room Bar site, Gas Street Social offers a seasonal taste of home comforts and mouth-watering European cuisine, alongside a speciality drinks menu. The key word here is ‘social’. Diners can expect sharing dishes and grazing boards, coupled with large sharing tables and cosy ‘snug’ areas for a relaxing experience. Heading into the weekend, the venue will provide late night drinks and the world’s first DJ Kitchen!

SOMETHING TOTALLY DIFFERENT? Try: Happy Cats Cafe Okay, so Birmingham’s first cat cafe isn’t opening just yet, but feline friendly dining is on the horizon! Ally Bartlam and Damian Polino, from Moseley, have launched a crowdfunding campaign in a bid to open the ‘Happy Cats Cafe’. Currently seeking the right location for the potential new venture, the couple are aiming to create a “Japanese meets west cafe where people can relax with rehomed cats, coffee and cake”. The cat cafe craze started out in Japan but has since swept to Devon, Wales and London – we think Birmingham may just be the purrfect next location!

Magic Door

Katy’s Diary Capital Presenter Katy Poulsom, shares how she recharges herself in time for spring

I

theclubandspa

don’t know about you, but I love spring. It’s nice to shed off winter clothes and turn your face to the sunshine; everything seems much more positive and exciting. But before spring arrives, I need to get myself into gear; from shaking off those extra pounds from Christmas, to getting my dancing shoes polished ready for some festival action. First things first I joined a gym. I decided to enrol at ‘The Club and Spa’ in the Cube as it was close to work so I’d have less excuses not to go! They have a number of classes throughout the day and night which keeps exercising fun and entertaining. On my first session I met Sunny Hira, a world kickboxing champion three times over. He spent the hour whooping my ass with a series of gruelling core exercises and some basic boxing techniques. I must admit for a hippie that hates violence I actually really enjoyed thumping out my frustrations on the pads! But what made it even better still was seeing my colleagues (Rob from Capital) legs shake and buckle as he tried to do squats. (There’s something devilishly satisfying about being slightly fitter then a work out buddy.)

So gym joined, I’m full of energy. My skin however, had a very different idea and decided to break out into pimples. Now I’m not much of a girly girl so the thought of going to a beauty salon was a bit daunting, but I can honestly say I really enjoyed it. The lovely Beth, from ‘Highfield Wellness and Beauty’ set my nerves at ease and chatted merrily away whilst cleansing, toning, massaging, scrubbing and moisturising my face. When I left I felt relaxed, super soft and very pleased I’d decided to brave the unknown and try something new. Within days my skin had cleared and I had my confidence back. So skin sorted, thighs thinning, I needed a party. Now if you’re like me and you enjoy something a little different to the usual night out then I have two great suggestions. Number one is Magic Door, it’s a monthly event with glitter galore, full of likeminded people wanting to have fun and dance to some epic tunes. It’s not fancy dress, but dressing fancy is encouraged, so dig out something bright and fun and get your flats on for a night of magic and mayhem. Speaking of which, the next event is a MUST in any Brummie’s calendar. ‘Swingamajig’ is heading to Digbeth on 3 May. It’s an amazing one day festival hosted by Electric Swing Circus; a mix of electro swing/jazz music. It will have you spinning and

twisting all the way to the bar. Again, fancy dress isn’t compulsory, but you’d feel rather silly if you didn’t make some sort of effort as it’s full of flapper dresses, braces, bow ties, feathers, wigs, tassels etc. Think 1920’s style and sounds with an added modern twist and beat! As well as the awesome ‘Electric Swing Circus’ who host the festival, the unbelievably talented ‘Correspondents’ will be headlining. Don’t be surprised if the lead singer jumps into the crowd, then marvel at how manages to not drop a beat whilst surfing the crowd. It’s a day and night not to be missed and really is the place to be for May bank holiday.

#whybham From Question to Statement I think it’s safe to say that Birmingham’s reputation is on the up. If you’re reading Style Birmingham I assume you’re already aware of how great the city is; the shopping, the style, the culture, the business opportunities… I’m hoping that everyone reading this is already in the ‘Birmingham is awesome’ camp. W

LIFE

e all stood still in 2012 when news travelled across the Atlantic that New York Magazine had suggested readers visit Birmingham instead of London. Suddenly 1.8million Americans were being told about our legendary culinary offering, and our “big-shouldered, friendly and fun” personality. And we all knew that this was going to send tidal waves across London and Manchester: “How dare Birmingham suddenly have a voice and tell people how great they are?!” The key fact was that it wasn’t us telling people, it was New York Magazine and that’s a whole different story. NY Magazine was just the first of many. Then came praise from newspapers on home turf; the Independent, the Guardian, The Telegraph and 2013-14 marked a rapid change in how the city was being seen. This was suddenly more than a few column inches – it was the start of a revolution. Meanwhile, every great Brummie was simply sharing and re-tweeting the positive news stories. Why? Because we all know how great the city is. We didn’t need to suddenly live up to expectations because we were already way better than people thought – it was just a case of making sure people got past Spaghetti Junction and experienced it for themselves. A key player in the revolution has been Marketing Birmingham and, specifically, Business Birmingham. They used the age-old question of ‘Why Birmingham?’ and turned it into a real opportunity. Business owners across the UK and beyond suddenly saw the city as a place do business. With facts like, ‘the strongest growth in economic output’, ‘more foreign investment than any other UK region’ and

‘fastest growing city’ as some of the key reasons to do business here, the question of ‘Why Birmingham?’ suddenly became a statement, and #whybham started trending. Beyond the ‘big boys of business’ like RBS and Deutsche Bank opening offices here, what does it mean for the rest of us? Well, simply stand in the city centre and see the cranes and diggers around you; get caught in the Paradise Forum traffic… change is happening, and 2015 is the year when it all begins. As residents we’ve got so much to look forward to this year.

THE NEW MAILBOX The billboards will be coming down this year as the doors to the brand new Mailbox open. The high end fashion offering is set to be impressive, with a new flagship Harvey Nichols joined by stores like Hugo Boss, Emporio Armani, LK Bennett, Jaeger, and Gieves & Hawkes. In the meantime, we get to sample a few new entertainment brands; Everyman Cinema opened last month and Gas Street Social (formerly Bar Room Bar) opens this month. This £50 million makeover sounds pretty impressive already! Another retail hub, Great Western Arcade, which is famous for unique retail, is welcoming some fantastic new businesses throughout the year. Keep your eyes peeled!

GRAND CENTRAL The £150 million state-of-the-art shopping mall is due to open in the autumn, bringing with it 60 new shops, restaurants and cafes. We’re all desperate to sample the likes of John Lewis,

Cath Kidston, L’Occitane, Kiehls and Giraffe. The most exciting for me, is The White Company and now I’ll have a whole store, rather than just a Selfridges concession, to spend my money in. I apologise now, Mr Bank Manager.

RESORTS WORLD Out of the city centre but well worth the 15-minute travelling time, will be the new Resorts World complex at the NEC. Due to open later this year, we can look forward to an outlet shopping centre with 50 stores, a hotel, an Asianthemed spa, a selection of restaurants and bars, a new Cineworld cinema complete with IMAX and 3D screens and a Genting Casino. It looks like the NEC is about to become an all-year-round destination and at least you know that parking won’t be an issue.

NEW FOODIE HOTSPOTS To complement the shopping, there are also some changes in the city’s food and drink scene. This month sees the opening of The Botanist on Temple Street, a mouthwateringly good cocktail bar that will be perfect for shoppers and workers. Spring time also sees £1 million investment into Summerrow’s entertainment district, with a newlook Mechu. Pushkar, Broad Street’s fantastic Indian restaurant, is getting ready to open a new Edgbaston venture soon. The team behind Lasan will also open a new restaurant at the historic 130 Colmore Row in May. Sorry if you had plans for 2015, you’d better clear your diary because Birmingham has it all going on. Maybe we’ll get some tourists from London and Manchester too…

What’s New ?

96 LIFE

In an age where newness, obsolescence and the need for innovation keeps us wanting more; what is it that makes change a good thing? Words: Matt Nation

O

ur culture is obsessed with new things; we’re always being told that the newer something is the better it is. So much so, that companies working in all manner of industries, from electronics to fashion build obsolescence into their products to ensure that consumers always have the option of upgrading to the latest version of whatever they’re selling. So what is it about the idea of newness that appeals so much to us? One obvious answer is that it’s not so much our choice as consumers, as the relentless push for sales by businesses. But perhaps this tactic plays into a natural desire that we all have for development and innovation. As a designer, my motivation for creating new things is to solve a problem, or to improve an existing solution. This need for evolution is about never settling for average, and it’s what keeps people creating. Newness needs to be cultivated and driven daily, usually by a person or team - it rarely just happens by itself. We need to dedicate time and resources to creating newness, so there is some risk to this pursuit, but if we’re not prepared to throw all we’ve got into improving our product, service, and community, we’ll never see it evolve the way we want it to. Companies, artists and charities that stick to the same old routine year in year out tend to stagnate or decline compared with those who are always challenging themselves to innovate, mix things up and bring something new to the table. It’s the absence of complacency that pushes us to seek newness in the hope that we can in some way improve our lives and those of others. So maybe that’s why we get excited about the latest

new-improved, updated, remodelled thingamajig. Even when on the surface it may not appear too different to what it’s replacing - because it reminds us that the people behind it are always trying to improve what they offer, and they want us to have the best possible experience when engaging with them. Perhaps a charity adopts some new technology to help you make donations more easily, or a brewer adjusts their recipe ever so slightly to get a crisper taste to their beer. Whatever it may be, there are people all over the world obsessed with fine tuning their contribution to our daily lives. I think it’s because of people like this that we are seeing so many exciting new things happening in Birmingham at the moment. There’s a real sense that the city is forging a new identity for itself, and that the change is being driven by hundreds of individuals and independent businesses who are taking matters into their own hands, looking for ways to improve what’s already here and filling gaps where there is room for something totally new. From Digbeth First Fridays and LoveBrum to 112 Space, Brummies are changing the way we live in the city, challenging us to try new things and question what we think we know. So why not try something new this week? Step out of your comfort zone, go somewhere different for after-work drinks or search outside the Bullring for a unique birthday present (we have some great ideas at PROVIDE). Life gets exciting when you stop holding on to what you’ve already got and start looking for something new. As the slogan on one of our T-shirts says; Monotony is poison!
