’d be lying if I said that I’d never dieted before a summer holiday. Whether it be some weird only eat fruit and nuts for three days diet or slaving away at the gym for a week before. But really, what’s the point in putting yourself through all that stress when as soon as you’re faced with the all inclusive buffet and endless supply of ice cream at the beach bar, we just go crazy. Our leading lady Elle Macpherson is not one to go crazy on ice cream. But she’s also not one to eat only fruit and nuts before a holiday. In our exclusive interview she tells us the secrets behind ‘The Body’ and how the number on the scales is no longer a concern. Whilst us mere mortals will never look like Elle (all six foot of her), the key message is really about looking after yourself. Many of us spend a fortune on miracle creams that promise more youthful and glowing skin but not many of us consider what we put into our bodies and the direct impact it has upon our skin. What with it being festival season, we have an edit of the very best local festivals and the festivals you may not have heard of but need to go to. And what a selection! There’s now so much choice and what’s great is, it’s not just all about the music anymore – there’s gourmet food, spa treatments and activity guides. In keeping with our festival guide, we have a festival fashion edit and a piece on the changing trends in UK festivals. Time to get that diary out! Also take some time to check out our Poolside Glamour photoshoot – you wouldn’t believe we shot it at Edgbaston Priory Club and not the Bahamas! In this issue we meet the man reinventing vintage as we know it and Anita Barr, the Group Fashion Buying Director at Harvey Nichols who gives us an insight into the new concept store opening in July at Mailbox. We really hope you enjoy our summer issue. Tweet us @Stylebham and let us know what you think.

Milton Jones The king of the oneliner talks bad shirts, Mock the Week and his new show, The Temple of Daft

My new tour The Temple of Daft loosely, follows a kind of adventure-archaeology type story. When people see you on telly, they want to see the same sort of thing when they see a live show, but obviously not the same jokes. Moving to a narrative was a way of keeping the same style. I’m amassing jokes from the moment my last tour beings, and then once it finishes, I begin to go to little out of the way places to test them. Generally speaking, the further you travel, the more pleased they are to see you. I’ll go with bits of paper and ideas, and it will be throwing mud against a wall and seeing what sticks. Once you’ve got a show that’s up and running, it’s more a physical battle. I try and see as many people around the country as I can, friends and relatives. Because there’s nothing worse than talking to hundreds of people, and then being the last person out of the car park, go to a hotel, and then the next time you

talk to someone properly is when you talk to hundreds of people the next night. That’s a recipe for madness. The new show will have between 200 and 250 jokes in, but that doesn’t mean that’s all I’ve written; I’ve written another 100 that I’ve put in the bin, at least another 100, probably, maybe three times as much, and that’s the hard work. But, I wouldn’t have got to that place had I not tried the first one. On Mock the Week, I sit in the one-liner chair, and if it’s not me, it’s Stewart Francis or Gary Delaney you know, it’s the ‘odd’ bloke, so that has gone in my favour. I’m sort of grateful for where it’s got me, but if I go for an audition for another show, albeit a sitcom or something, it’s quite often as the crazy neighbour. You think well, I’m glad I’ve got this audition, but it’d be nice not to have to do that role forever. Doing Mock the Week is a bit like doing an exam in that we actually get some stuff beforehand, but the list is so long that basically it’s every

story that happened in the news that didn’t involve someone dying over the last week. So, there is no way I can cover all of it. You just hope, like an exam, that the bit you’ve revised comes up, because it records for nearly three hours for a half hour show. You hope that the 10 minutes you zoned out for isn’t the 10 minutes that appears on television. I usually buy my shirts from retro shops. It’s tricky with shirts because people think, ‘Oh zany shirt!’ but actually the zaniest of shirts is too much. What I like are shirts that people go, ‘Oh that looks… hang on, is that good or bad?’ It needs to be quite subtle, in a way, and I’ve got 100s of them. But yes, they are usually from Oxfam or retro shops where the old lady says, ‘Oh, that looks just you, that does,’ and they’ve no idea who I am. Milton Jones comes to Birmingham Symphony Hall on June 5 for his brand new show Temple of Daft. For tickets visit www.miltonjones.com

GRANDE TOUR Ariana Grande - Honeymoon Tour Barclaycard Arena | 9 June | £37.26 barclaycardarena.co.uk There’s no mistaking Ariana Grande. She’s a mix of powerhouse vocals, super-sleek hair and ultra high thigh boots. Not to mention, she stole the show at the 2015 Radio Disney Music Awards! Her mega-hit, Problem, was named Song of The Year and you’ll get to hear it live on the Honeymoon Tour! No need to thank us!

Parodying everything important like cuddly figures, calories and of course happy meals, it’s no wonder funny girl Omielan has had such media praise. Her debut solo show “What Would Beyoncé Do?!” was said to be “one of the top UK comedy shows of the last decade” by The Guardian. Personally, we just love her down-to-earth, laugh-at-yourself humour.

Five Festival Essentials! From Capital Breakfast’s Katy Poulsom

WIN TICKETS TO FUSION! We’ve teamed up with Capital FM to give Style Birmingham readers the chance to win 2 tickets to Fusion festival on Sunday 30 August. To enter just visit stylebham.com/win One entry per person. Closing date Monday 3 August 2015 Terms & Conditions: Entries must be received by the closing date of Monday 3 August at 23.59pm. One winner will receive two standard tickets to attend Fusion festival on Sunday 30 August. Winners will be drawn at random and notified by email within 14 days. Under 14s must be accompanied by an adult.

Before you wave goodbye to normality for the weekend and head off in search of the magic and mayhem of a festival, make sure that you’ve packed these five essentials 1. GLITTER - It’s fun, it’s sparkly and it’s a great way to meet new pals. Everyone’s up for a bit of glitter at festivals, so pack some Vaseline and as many sparkly pots of shimmer as you can. Then go forth and decorate the fitties you fancy! 2. BABY WIPES - After the glitter comes the baby wipes! Also an easy way of getting clean if the showers are busy. 3. WELLIES - Even if the sun is shining and a heat wave is predicted, pack your wellies. Festival sites still get muddy because of all the people, so don’t ruin any beloved shoes. Be comfy, be dry and embrace the rubber wellies! 4. TOILET ROLL - You don’t want to be caught short. Keep loo roll or a pack of tissues in your bag and jacket. 5. CRAZY CLOTHES - We all have a few bizarre items of clothing in our wardrobes; old bits of fancy dress or vintage hand-me downs. Festivals are the perfect time to dust these off and embrace them. So whether it’s an 80s bum bag, a pink feather boa or a superman cape, stick it on and skip off into the festival sunset.

WHERE: Digbeth, Birmingham WHEN: 25 - 26 July TICKETS: £34.50, madebirmingham.com LINE UP: Shortlisted for Best Metropolitan Festival after their debut last year, MADE Birmingham makes a triumphant return with a seriously impressive line-up of house and drum & bass acts. There will be six unique concept stages across outdoor and indoor urban spaces at what has been called The Digbeth Triangle. The eclectic lineup includes MK, Wilkinson, Beardyman, David Rodigan, Julio Bashmore and Dusky. Wear flats because you’ll be raving from midday to midnight.

The Urban One

Moseley Folk WHERE: Moseley Park, Birmingham WHEN: 4-6 September TICKETS: £39 per day, moseleyfolk.co.uk LINE UP: Celebrating 10 years, 1960’s pop icons The Monkees (I’m a Believer, Daydream Believer) top the bill in an extra special line-up. Alongside performances from rockers Spiritualized, Scottish indie band Idlewild and Anna Calvi, there’ll be an ale and cider bar, a pig roast and awardwinning street food. This loosely folkbased festival has a 2,500 capacity and a boutique vibe - if you want less rave and more relaxing, this is the one for you.

The Chilled One

From DJ - Beardyman

He’s the lovable beatboxing champion, the festival favourite last heard playing on Fatboy Slim’s global smash Eat Sleep Rave Repeat 1. SHARPIE - never be stuck without a sharpie at a festival. You never know when you’ll need to autograph a body part or draw a moustache on a girl, or a penis on a sleeping cheek. 2. PLASTIC BAGS - Without plastic bags you are nothing. Plastic bags will save you. Can’t find a portaloo? plastic bag. Soiled clothes? plastic bag. Lost shoes? plastic bag. 3. GRELB - Always bring a Stevenson Grelb (TM). The Grelb has four times the resolution of a Shast Vash Vostenko (TM), and can be recharged via wifi. Without one, you’ll probably die alone and in agony. 4. WELLIES - Wellies can be used to clobber people round the kopf if they’re giving you bare chat. They can also be used as a drinking vessel, and can be confided in when it’s all got too much and you can’t handle your friends any more ‘cos you’re a light weight. Your wellies will not judge you. If they ARE judging you, you’ve taken too much. 5. Condoms - You will not get laid, but bringing condoms help to make you feel like you will, and it’s that sense of hope that makes us patriots. Sunday is all about the ‘Songs from Stage and Screen’ with music from Wet Wet Wet singer Marti Pellow and Elaine Paige OBE. Don’t miss headliners McBusted on Saturday, plus Rae Morris and Rebecca Ferguson.

WHERE: Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire WHEN: 6-9 August TICKETS: £165.99, wildernessfestival.com LINE UP: There aren’t many festivals where you can have an early morning swim in the lake or enjoy Michelin star dining in a field. Wilderness has become as much about the idyllic surroundings and health and relaxation offering as the big name acts. Music is provided by Björk and Ben Howard whilst food is taken care of by Raymond Blanc and Angela Hartnett with long table banquets and field restaurants. For ultimate pampering, you’ll want to visit the Lakeside Spa and The Sanctuary. Think acupuncture, restoration facials and mindfulness workshops. Or for some adventure, try horse riding and archery then end your day with talks and debates from the V&A and Sunday Papers Live. It’s the festival to give you a full body and mind MOT.

Bestival

THE CHANGING FACE OF FESTIVALS Words: Tara Tomes

Festivals are serious business and fans are expecting more choice, better flexibility, and interactive experiences. With the first festivals just around the corner, here’s a quick look at the five trends shaping the 2015 festival scene.

THE RISE OF ONE-DAY EVENTS

Shambala

Festival organisers have realised the benefits of holding one-day events; not just financially but being able to capture new audiences who might be put off by the camping experience. A huge benefit of one-day events is being able to schedule them around major festivals, which mean that better headliners can be secured, and lower ticket prices of course. With music fans’ tastes changing all the time, oneday festivals can better target niches; like Electric Daisy Carnival in Milton Keynes, which celebrates the best electronic music, and the boutique music and arts festival Somerley Tea Party. This also means you can fit even more festivals in your diary.

ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY Festivals, by nature are about celebrating the great outdoors but this year we’re seeing the

rise of eco-friendly events. There’s Shambala, which has won awards for its provision of 100% renewable energy, and Wood Festival, which is completely powered by renewable energy. There’s so many to choose from – don’t forget Green Man in picturesque Brecon Beacons and Eden Festival, which takes place in the hills of Dumfries and Galloway to promote sustainability. Did you know that audience travel emissions to music venues are the single biggest contributor to the music industry’s environmental impact, accounting for a huge 68% of the festival sector’s total emissions? Don’t feel bad about it; instead, leave the car at home and take a ride with Big Green Coach, the largest events travel company in the UK. They travel to most festivals and for every passenger they protect five square feet of Amazonian rainforest. This might not sound like much but in the past two years they have protected 800,000 square feet – equivalent to 18 acres (or an area the size of 10 x Wembley Stadium pitches). Impressive!

FLEXIBLE PAYMENT SCHEMES Payment schemes are something that the music industry has toyed with for years and finally they’re starting to work. With people struggling for disposable income and festivals costing hundreds of pounds for the full experience, these deposit schemes are rising in popularity. The idea is simple; you put down a nominal deposit and then you can pay off the balance in the months

leading up to the festival. It’s easy and interestfree, so the perfect cost-spreading solution. It’s not just the smaller niche festivals that are taking this approach; festivals like Reading & Leeds, Isle of Wight, Download, Creamfields, Bestival, and Boardmasters, are on board. Remember those ecoaware folk at Big Green Coach? They’re the only coach providers currently offering deposits so now you can pay for your responsible travel to your eco-friendly festival bit by bit. Win.

15

FASHION PARTNERSHIPS For years, journalists have filled their pages with festival fashion but now the brands themselves are seeing the value of associating themselves with their customers’ favourite festivals. Two brands that have executed this brilliantly are H&M, who sponsored Californian festival Coachella and even released a special fashion range in time for the event, and New Look, who are headline sponsors for this year’s Wireless. So, it seems that the festival world is moving with the times; with more choice, a savvier business model, and partnerships that fans actually benefit from. Creating communities is the key to this, which they can do with multiple stages offering a host of music genres all at one time, as well as relying on social media to create pre, during and post-festival conversations.

Gone are the days when the festival calendar was a short and simple selection of threeday events tailored to specific music genres

Lynsey Le Keux, founder and director of Le Keux Vintage Salons, talks start ups, 50s fashion and blue hair

Me & My Style How did Le Keux start? Around seven years ago I had my own vintage wedding and at the time I couldn’t find any vintage suppliers that could do what I wanted. So I had the idea to be a vintage wedding planner but soon realised how hard it was to find the business. Soon after, I got into event management and I organised a few hen parties for friends and soon found that people really responded to everything I did that had a strong vintage brand. Hen parties seemed like a good way to go, so I started working with other people in the field and we’d each offer our own individual services. We came together to do a collaborative photoshoot and I just thought that if I could teach myself how to do the vintage hair and make-up, we could make it look like it’s a vintage hen party. We used the photos to promote our parties and people were way more interested in the hair and make-up and photoshoot part more than anything else. As soon as we started doing more of the beauty side of things and vintage makeovers, the

business grew very quickly. A year and a half in, I quit my job and started this full-time and a year later we took on our first premisses here at the Custard Factory. Since then we’ve expanded and took on Leeds and we now have a salon opening this month in Leamington Spa.

“ I love growing the business, setting up a site, getting the right people in to make it self-sufficient and then moving on. ” What are the best bits about your job? I love growing the business. My favourite part is setting up a site, getting the right people in to make it self-sufficient and then moving on and starting a new one. I also love the aesthetic of it all. I couldn’t get away with it at home but I am starting to take over room by room but my husband tries to fight it because it’s so girly.

How would you describe your style? I’m very 50s but I don’t think I’m completely authentic vintage. There are some girls who wear girdles but I tend to mix and match it with contemporary and retro. The 50s is a really flattering style too and I always wear dresses. What is your favourite item you own? I have to say my favourite item would be a dress by a US company called Bettie Page clothing. It’s a black shift dress, long sleeve with a tight criss cross belt at the waist. It’s fitted and I feel really professional in it but it still allows me to express my style. If I’m going into a very corporate environment like when I’m selling the cosmetics, it’s important for me to be taken seriously. I do have a distinct style and I do have blue hair and some people in that environment might judge me for that, so it’s nice to find those pieces that make me feel like I belong in that environment. THE BODY

FASHION

Before the time of Instagram and blogging which today make megastars like Chiara Ferragni millions a year through marketing, and even before the Kardashians were babes in arms, there was Elle ‘The Body’ Macpherson — the first of her kind to use her innate entrepreneurial skills to turn supermodel stardom into a multi-million pound business Words: Elle Sixsmith

Her business success is well documented, with Elle Macpherson Intimates now the top selling brand in Australia, host and executive producer of ‘Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model’ and her most recent venture, health company WelleCo. Their debut product The Super Elixir, has now sold out on Net-a-Porter three times. Created by Elle’s London-based nutritionist Dr. Simone Laubscher, The Super Elixir is a potent organic powder, designed to help keep the body in a balanced pH state – and it’s what Elle attributes her youthful glow, condition of her golden mane and overall energy levels to. “The Super Elixir is easily the key to my wellbeing at this age. We know eating more green leafy plants builds a strong foundation for wellness, and with modern farming we may not always get the nutrients we need from the food we eat every day. So the need to supplement is sometimes there. And it works for me, I’ve got plenty of energy, my skin, hair and nails are good, I feel more balanced and I don’t crave sugar like I used to,” she says. Whilst much of ‘The Body’ is obviously in the genes, seeing her grace the cover of this month’s Harper’s Bazaar Australia – it seems whatever the 51-year-old is doing, it’s clearly working. “I look after my body, not so it looks good, not so I weigh a certain amount or that I have a certain silhouette on the beach, but more so I am healthy, strong, energised and happy. That’s more important to me than a number on the scale.” Here’s what Elle had to say about health, happiness and growing older and wiser. From growing up in Sydney, to the start of your career, what role did health and fitness play in your life? Aussie’s are naturally a lot more active, our lifestyles are focused around the outdoors, and growing up in Sydney we were always at the beach. I think it’s this upbringing that set me in good stead throughout life. Now living in Miami by

the beach again, I feel there are a lot of similarities between Miami and Sydney. What are your passions? I love sport and I try to maintain an active lifestyle. I schedule some daily exercise for 8:30am after the school run. I hate the gym so I’ll do a different sport every day if I can. I mix it up, but no matter what, I do 45 minutes of something a day. I love the outdoors. If I’m by the water, I love to paddleboard, surf, swim laps or water ski. I also love to hike or run for about 45 minutes a day. What triggered the change to really focus on your health and wellbeing? I have always been focused on health, and wellbeing, I think it’s the Aussie in me but it wasn’t until I was approaching my 50th birthday, and met Dr. Laubscher that this really fell into place for me. Other than introducing alkalizing greens into my diet, what really turned everything around for me was sleep. At first I went to my doctor, and she didn’t tell me to cut wine or coffee or anything. What she did say was to change my lifestyle. The easiest thing I could do at the time was to become really disciplined about getting seven hours of sleep a night. So now I have to put myself to bed at 10pm because I get up at 5am. That’s terrible! But I love it. My stress levels have gone down and it’s the beginning of seeing changes. How has your diet changed over your lifetime? The day I learned about being alkaline changed my life and I have Dr. Laubscher to thank for this. I went to see Dr. Laubscher because I had some symptoms that I couldn’t help myself. I had a good diet and exercised but I was tired, sluggish, I’d put on weight and I wasn’t feeling good. Dr. Laubscher said that it sounded like my body was too acidic and not in a balanced pH state. I’d never heard of this before because when it comes to wellness we usually talk about drinking enough water or exercising more but I’d never p

29

30

considered that my lifestyle, as a busy mum of two, could affect my body so much. It’s known that eating more plants can help keep our bodies alkaline, but I know how difficult it can be to live a strict alkaline diet and honestly, I don’t believe in extremes. I want to live my life and not worry, so I take this alkaline supplement every day. Then there are the obvious things, such as hydrating with water and making sure I have three square meals a day. So the big difference in my attitude to diet and wellbeing from when I was younger is that now I look at my health and diet in a much more holistic way.

FASHION

It’s all too easy for women to feel critical about the way they look and in your industry, it can be even harder. Did you ever feel insecure or feel like you didn’t fit in during your career? The irony is that, as with many women, I was more selfconscious when I was younger. Now as I age I just want to be the best version of myself at whatever age that might be. Do you feel a pressure to maintain ‘The Body’? I see a difference between when I was 20, when I was 30, when I was 40 and now I’m 51. I have done well with what I have, but honestly, there’s a big difference and I’m ok with that. I dress differently. And I fluctuate from day to day, week to week but the small things don’t bother me anymore. What I have learnt is what bothers me today, will not be bothering me tomorrow.

“Growing old is the most natural thing in the world. As I grow older I learn more about the world and myself, and I love that”

We all inevitably grow older and look older. You have forged a hugely successful career based on your looks, vitality and health. Does the prospect of ageing bother you in any way? Growing old is the most natural thing in the world.

Above, Elle at the launch of The Super Elixir To the right, The Super Elixir powder

As I grow older I learn more about the world and myself, and I love that. Who inspires you? My close friend Diane Von Furstenburg is such an inspiring woman, and one of the most beautiful women I know, inside and out. Where did your entrepreneurial streak come from, was it innate or something you learnt through your family? For me it has always come naturally, I studied law before modelling and although I have modelled throughout my entire career, business has always been a passion for me. I love the constantly evolving challenges. y

Elle’s nutritionist on living alkaline and glowing skin Dr. Simone Laubscher has over 15 years of experience in the nutrition industry and is a specialist in disease prevention and ageing. With a PhD in oxidative stress and toxicology and a bachelor degree in science and nutrition, she has treated many celebrities including Sinitta, Billie Piper and Gordon Ramsey.

As upsetting as it is to admit, most of us will never look like Elle Macpherson. But that healthy glow, that is achievable Here’s Dr. Laubscher’s top tips on achieving glowing skin: > Drink 2-3L water per day >Alkalize by fast-tracking your life with an amazing clean organic product like The Super Elixir >Eat more plant based foods and reduce animal products > Introduce good essential fatty acid products such as flaxseed oil and take 2-3 soup spoons per day >Try to move your body every day, even walking would be amazing. Elle moves her body every day, even if it’s just for 30 minutes

What is your philosophy to eating? My philosophy is all about balance and the 80:20 rule so you keep your weekdays clean and more alkaline and have a little fun on weekends. I’m not a big fan of dairy and gluten for most patients and I usually suggest no carbs after 5pm so that patients wake up feeling more energised. Pescatarian is the way I live but I rotate in 31 other organic proteins for other patients depending on their digestive systems.

Ingredients: 1 cup almond milk or coconut water 2 tbsp chia seeds 1 tsp vanilla essence 2 tsp The Super Elixir 1 tsp natural, unprocessed honey Your choice of fruit for garnishing

Is having an alkaline diet achievable and affordable for a normal person with a busy working life? It is impossible to live 24/7 alkaline so what The Super Elixir will do, is fast track your life if you can’t nail an alkaline diet on a daily basis. This literally allows you to have your cake and eat it too!

Method: 1. In a bowl combine almond milk, chia seeds, vanilla, The Super Elixir and honey and mix well 2. Allow to sit for a few hours or over night until seeds have absorbed most of the liquid and the mixture is thickened in consistency 3. Spoon into a bowl and garnish with some toasted nuts and your choice of fresh chopped fruit

How does food affect our skin? Fruits, salads and vegetables are high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and water. This supports cell function so that goodness can get delivered to the cell and toxins removed. Since your skin is made up of cells, by eating well you support your skin’s ability to health itself, produce more collagen and hold more water so it looks and feels more vibrant.

What are the added benefits? Don’t be fooled by the size… chia seeds pack a powerful nutritional punch! Chia seeds are among the most nutritious foods on the planet. They are loaded with fiber, protein, Omega-3 fatty acids and various micronutrients. Also, Coconut water is great for hydration but you can also use filtered water or almond milk. And of course your daily dose of The Super Elixir with over 40 specialised ingredients to feed your cells from the inside!

. Elle s secret ingredient

What sort of benefits can be seen and felt from having an alkaline diet and using the Super Elixir? Everything associated with good health is when you run more alkaline. Overall eating more plants and eating less animals will allow you to live more alkaline and adding in a clean organic super green product will allow you to have a life and stay alkaline. You will tend to have more energy, sleep better, have less sugar and food cravings, your skin will hold more moisture and look less tired and you will feel less bloated.

Festival season has arrived once more! And whilst the thought of camping in a muddy, field with minimal washing facilities would normally fill us with dread, when you throw in hours of live music and a few cider tents, suddenly we’re all for it. But just because you’re going to be mostly unwashed for a few days – bar a wet-wipe ‘shower’ – that doesn’t mean your style has to suffer too. But the question is, which style do you go for? Take the opportunity to have a little fun with your look. After all, a festival is the best place to do it!

A Fine Vintage Style Birmingham talks vintage with the man who has reinvented it Words: Elle Sixsmith

When you conjure up the word ‘vintage’ what comes to mind? Dusty charity shops with piles of brightly coloured polyester, the contents of your granny’s wardrobe or perhaps riffling through a so-called vintage store full of coats with badly balding rabbit fur collars and pockets you’re worried about putting your hands into. Now, think of a beautiful, spacious, brightly-lit shop full of the most exquisite clothes, each beautifully presented and all in pristine condition. No nasty whiffs and not a moth hole in sight.

44 FASHION

The man who personifies everything that is desirable about vintage is William Banks-Blaney, globally referred to as ‘The Vintage King’ and Global Style Ambassador for American Express. WilliamVintage, his high-end, by-appointment only store in Marylebone, is set over two floors with velvet sofas, silk rugs, Valrhona chocolate and champagne, all providing the ultimate shopping experience. It features a carefully edited selection of the finest vintage and haute couture clothing in the world, all sourced by William himself. His impeccable style and ability to source jaw-droppingly beautiful vintage clothing has earned him an enviable client list, including Gillian Anderson, Tilda Swinton, Lily Allen, Rihanna, Jessie J and Victoria Beckham. If all that wasn’t enough, he’s just produced his debut book ‘25 DRESSES: Iconic Moments in TwentiethCentury Fashion’. Through his selection and description of 25 iconic vintage dresses, William tells the history of 20th century couture, the fashion designers who created the dresses and the women who wore them. Each dress is looked at in forensic detail for its design and construction and its cut and embellishments, in order to evaluate the artistry of the individual couturier. We caught up with him to talk about his life, passions and of course, the new book.

How do you define vintage?

I think it’s incredibly subjective because everyone has their own notion of what it means. I tend to view it as pre-1975, but I think that’s largely because I was born in 1973 and if I was alive, it doesn’t get to count. As vintage becomes more popular, more recent decades are factoring in. So there’s now a huge desire for 80s and 90s pieces which we sometimes go to if they are really iconic, but generally we don’t carry very much from after 1975. However, I make a few exceptions for very good examples of Alexander McQueen because he was such a genius, and for very good examples of Thierry Mugler.

When some people think of vintage, they imagine riffling round racks of old clothes for hours, all with moth holes and a distinct fusty smell. Do you think people have a misguided view of vintage?

I think it’s what vintage used to be until recently, but it’s changing hugely as women become more sophisticated in their approach to buying clothes and understanding fashion. Even in the short space of time we have been running as a company, there’s been a gigantic shift. Whereas 10 years ago, vintage was viewed as a bohemian choice. Now our clients are bankers, barristers and real industry leaders who just accept a piece of vintage clothing on its own merit. More companies are emerging rather as we are, where everything is beautifully dry-cleaned and checked, and presented in a really beautiful environment. Of course, there are the shops that have moth balls and you have to rummage about the rails but that can be half the fun, particularly if you have a lower budget. I remember as a student in my twenties, I really enjoyed that sense of dipping in and trying to find a treasure amongst the rails. But there’s a new aspect to vintage too, which for us, is a woman who is very keen, savvy and fashion-oriented, but who wants to develop her wardrobe with some really good investment pieces.

Where do you source your clothes and how do you know when you’ve struck gold?

I source from around the world; I always say it is council estates to country estates, so it can be from Manhattan to Milton Keynes. At the higher end, there are many similarities to being an art or antique dealer. Actually dresses travel that much more easily. It’s very difficult to give away a sideboard but it’s very easy to give away a dress. Even now, I’m sure you’ve bought dresses in the past that you’ve given to your best friend, or a niece or a sister and of course that’s always happened so you can find extraordinary clothes in the most unlikely of places.

“I really enjoyed that sense of dipping in and trying to find a treasure amongst the rails.”

Where are the weirdest places you’ve found vintage treasure?

One of the weirdest ones was when the daughter of a friend of mine brought in a Tesco carrier bag with a crumpled up dress in it. Her mother had given it to her and she’d put it in a dressing up box for the children. But actually, it was a 1968 Courrèges couture dress, photographed for Vogue in probably one of the most iconic fashion photos of the 21st century. I pulled it out of the Tesco carrier bag and it was covered in crayons and melted galaxy bars, but I’m very pleased to say we got it back to its original condition and it went to a very good home in a museum. But it’s half of the magic to be honest; I’ve found amazing clothes in a barn in Devon; I’ve found a fantastic Dior cape in a store in Florida that was just about to be cut up and made into cushions — you just never know, it’s the thrill of the chase.

What first got you interested in vintage?

I have always worked in the visual field and have always loved fashion. I’ve worked as an interior designer for many years and as an art dealer and that naturally took me into vintage clothing. For me, vintage clothing has a real magic to it with its beautiful design and craftsmanship. And for quite a long time people have overlooked it as a thing of beauty.

Why did you decide to create the book?

I was approached to write the book and we agreed that the best way of doing it was to select the dresses which were iconic, not just in terms of being beautiful, but real key moments in fashion history. Dresses that changed the way that women dressed in a dynamic way and still have a legacy in fashion today.

Your dresses are worn by some of the most famous and inspiring women. What have been your favourite occasions where your dresses have been worn?

I have so many it’s really difficult to select a single one. Gillian Anderson at the BAFTAs in 2013 wore a spectacular Sybil Connolly dress which got ‘look of the night’ from most newspapers and magazines. Lily Allen, when she did her first concert for several years, wore 1960s Madam Grey; I thought that was a really beautiful look. Jessie J at Cannes Film Festival last year looked incredible in Azzaro. There are so many moments which is a really nice thing to be able to say; they always have a magic for me.

Do you have any advice for newcomers to vintage?

If you’re dipping your toe into vintage for the first time, start with something you can easily incorporate into your existing wardrobe. Look at a fantastic 1960s swing coat or a classic cocktail dress. Choose something that you already know you’ve got the shoes or bag to go with and whatever you’re looking at, always put condition first.

And who would you like to dress? I’d like to dress the world.

As Harvey Nichols prepares to open the doors of its brand new Birmingham store in July, we catch up with the company’s Group Fashion Buying Director, Anita Barr. She is the person responsible for selecting this season’s most wanted, from the must-have handbag to the hi-top trainers that every fashionista wants to be spotted in. In our exclusive interview, she shares her personal style secrets and reveals the new design talent we should be looking out for.

We have so much happening as a company and there are such exciting times ahead both at our landmark Knightsbridge store and, most notably in Birmingham. Harvey Nichols has a long tradition of supporting up and coming designers and the new season is no exception. Customers will see lots of new names alongside well established big hitters.

What can shoppers expect from the new Birmingham store? We don’t want to reveal too much yet, but suffice to say our new store will certainly be pioneering, taking retail to a whole new level. It will set the bar for the Harvey Nichols stores of the future, so expect to see innovations across the board – from the design of the fitting rooms and the introduction of our new Style Concierge through to the standard of service. I am thrilled to be bringing a host of new brands into the store, some that have never been available in Birmingham before, while other names will be making a welcome return.

We will be introducing a lot of great new names this season – if they are not available locally they can be ordered via our Style Concierge at the new Birmingham store. ADEAM: Easy-to-wear pieces with a clear hyperluxe message, inspired by designer Hanako’s hometowns of Tokyo and New York. Standouts include the sculpted grey bomber jacket, strapless geometric dress and reversible curly sheepskin waistcoat. Mugler: With David Koma at the helm, AW15 displays more angular shapes than previous collections – hardware and cutaways with a sharper edge bring a new fierce sexiness to the brand. Neil Barrett: Neil Barrett womenswear reflects the same clean, modern handwriting as its menswear line. The leather biker with star motif has to be our key piece for the season.

How is Harvey Nichols changing and moving with the times?

Which new designers should we be looking out for?

Which womenswear trends are going to be massive for AW15? Studio 54: Uber luxe from Altuzarra, Balmain, Christopher Kane and Lanvin – beautifully cut lurex, chiffon and silk to evoke the iconic nightclub’s heyday in the late 70s. Victoriana: Gothic meets chic with lace, velvet and heavy embroidery at the fore. A catwalk favourite at 3.1 Philip Lim, Alexander McQueen and Haider Ackermann. Rebel Rebel: The AW shows saw a welcome return of punked-up tartan. I loved the black leather kick-pleat skirt at ADEAM and the over-sized pocket dress at 3.1 Philip Lim. Army & Navy: Military trends remain for autumn with Tim Coppens and Isabel Marant leading the march.

Which fashion musthaves can you not be without for AW15? Rick Owen’s ash-washed leather biker jacket; Le Kilt grey and tartan skirt; a Katie Rowland crystal safety pin; anything from the new Eddie Borgo handbag collection, and the cutest monster bug key charm from Fendi.

Which were your standout collections from the AW15 shows? In New York, the stand-out collection for me was Victoria Beckham. She produced a very commercial collection that was effortlessly chic; I wanted to buy it all! While in London, it was another Brit favourite of ours, Christopher Kane who offered a perfect selection of sophisticated tailoring with a playful nod to the 70s. Across the channel, Haider Ackerman’s revival of the punk era and Valentino’s new graphic monochrome pieces really stood out.

iPhone 6 plus, from £619

What is your favourite summer getaway? A short getaway from the busy city of Los Angeles, Catalina Island located in Avalon is #1 on my list! The small island is surrounded by the deep blue waters and it’s a paradise that can be found just short distance away from LA. I love visiting this place whenever I get a long weekend to unplug from the internet and be able to relax and do some ocean activities.

What are your travel tips? No matter if you’re going somewhere big or small, make sure to study the location and your surroundings before the arrival, it’s always a good idea to get it in your head. What do you like to do there? I like to rent a golf cart and do the scenic tour. You get to drive the little golf cart around one side of the entire little island and take beautiful and stunning pictures! Another activity I love is snorkeling. The water is amazingly clear and it’s always exciting to see the underwater world. On my next visit, I really want to try zip lining! What are your summer essentials? I always pack my Chanel Boy Bag, Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses, EltaMD sun cream, Daniel Wellington Watch, iPhone 6 and cute little rings to accessorise with. DANIEL WELLINGTON

Where do you stay? The Pavilion Hotel is perfectly located close to all the cafes and little shops. It’s also quick and easy to get to upon arrival, so no long taxi rides.

What is your favourite holiday destination? New York! As much as I love a relaxing pool, or beach side holiday – there’s something about exploring a new vibrant, buzzing city that has me at hello- and New York is definitely just that. What are your travel tips? Plan ahead! Although I do like to believe in spontaneity, when you’re travelling somewhere for a short space of time it’s great to have an idea of what you want to see and do. Try and plan things accordingly, so look at the areas and try and group things together!

Lulu Guinness

edie satchel, £275, House of Fraser

What do you spend your time doing there? As well as sightseeing (because I’m pretty sure the Big Apple has some of THE best sights in the world) I’m a big fan of discovering new restaurants and shops – and New York has so many pop ups, vintage hide outs and independent brands – so taking recommendations and discovering something new is definitely a favourite. What are your travel essentials? A small across the body bag (I love Kate Spade and Lulu Guinness) for travel essentials. To make sure no passport is left behind (trust me, it’s happened), I love my Aspinal of London initialled passport case. I always take my Bose noise cancelling headphones (I’m a bit of a nervous flyer so these are genius), a Wildfox sleep mask to try and catch some Z’s on the way over and an Intense Hydration Clinique lip balm to not dry out too much on the flight! Where do you like to hang out? I love Soho for the cool shops and restaurants, it seems to be a pretty cool area with some amazing bars and nightlife. Although I’ve only been once I also love Williamsburg, so am hoping to discover a little more of Brooklyn next time too!

The perfect Sand SUMMER GETAWAY TO… TROPEA Where will you be going on holiday this year? My favourite place is Italy. I visit twice a year to a little Italian city called Tropea. Tropea is a true Italian city, built on a cliff surrounded by blue seas, it is a real gem of Italy and a popular holiday destinations for Italians living in other regions. I am lucky enough to visit so often as my Uncle Luigi lives there, so I have been visiting since I was just 7 months old!

FASHION

What do you like to do there? My favourite things to do in Italy all revolve around food (of course!). Eat long meals with one too many courses, sit and enjoy a coffee for an hour rather than drink on the go and watch the world go by in cafés. I become quintessentially Italian – it is so very relaxing!

ESSIE

Travel Essentials Elizabeth Arden eight

What will you pack? One thing I cannot go anywhere without is Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream, and it is even more of a necessity in the sun! Any burnt skin or chapped lips just need a good covering of Eight Hour Cream to really add moisture again. Another essential is nail varnish, I find it can chip so easily on the beach and in the sea, so I take along one colour to patch up any chipped nails and keep my pedicure perfect. This year my choice will be Essie’s ‘Cocktail Bling’, a gorgeous blue grey that is a great summer colour. I’ll also be taking my Triangl Swimwear bikini – it is black which is typical of my style, but the material and fit is just so perfect! And it’s a great one to lay out in the sun in – I am all for crazy shaped swimwear, but the tan lines aren’t the best!

hour cream, £26

Where do you go like to relax? Other than the beach, my favourite place to hang out is the lovely bars and cafés on the corsa (which is the main street in the city). Every evening the ‘passeggiata’ will occur on the corsa, where people walk in groups up and down the street for about an hour. It’s an Italian tradition which mostly younger people take part in with the hope of catching someones eye, it’s all about seeing people and also being seen – and it makes for some fantastic people watching! With the festival season firmly in swing and Coachella already under our belts, the focus is on summer style Bullring is the glamourous heart of Birmingham with over 160 bustling stores for all of your shopping needs. Since opening it’s doors back in 2003, Bullring has quickly cemented itself as one of the UK’s finest retail destinations, playing host to a variety of top brands including Victoria’s Secret, River Island, Topshop and one of only four iconic Selfridges stores. While many of the festival staples perennially stay the same – flower headbands in tousled tresses, flat ankle boots, shorts and bohemian floral dresses – there has been a rise in cropped tops and longer length shorts, as worn by the likes of Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid. Bringing a touch of the Hamptons to the UK, designers are issuing a ‘White Out’ this summer with crisp and calming whites, as well as pastels and muted nudes, bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘pale and interesting.’ Futuristic and eye-catching, this trend offers a mixture oversized kaftans, boyfriend shirts, loose satin maxis and tailored mini-dresses with silver and gold adornments – perfect for that white summer party. Double denim has always been a bit of a taboo, but this season designers are going denim mad whether it’s ripped, bleached, dark wash, acid wash, flared, skinny, low cut or high waisted – there is a jacket, jean, short, dress, skirt, shirt, blouse, jegging or tregging to fit your needs. Men’s fashion is taking on a European twist this spring, with tailored chinos, canvas pumps, long lightweight shirts and stripes-a-plenty. As one of the easiest patterns to pull off, it’s no surprise that stripes continue to cement themselves as a staple in the modern gents’ wardrobe. This season sees both high-end designers and high street brands putting all new slants on stripes. From vivid block-stripe knitwear to wide-striped tailoring, this timeless motif has been re-imagined for SS15. Inspired by Paco Rabanne’s infamous chainmail dress, Bullring isn’t just a destination for shopping the latest key trends, it’s a retail experience with over 40 café’s, bars and restaurants including Jamie’s Italian, Handmade Burger Co and Wagamama’s - all there to enrich your visit to Bullring in Birmingham.

Hair Update

Matthew Williamson

This summer we’re set to ditch the straighteners as Royston Blythe talk retro waves, nourished hair and the return of the curl

. GET THE 70 s LOOK

Images: Sam Wilson for British Fashion Council

Retro-inspired hair with a fresh update is an ultimate take from the Spring Summer catwalk. Elegant and stylish curls oozing with vitality and movement reflect the 70’s era perfectly and keep the mood ultra soft and feminine. • To add volume and texture around the roots, tease hair with a back combing brush and enhance using texture dust. • Next create big curls using tongs and finish with a light serum to reflect a healthy, well maintained finish. • To replicate that curled, flicked out look, be sure to curl the hair away from the face for the ultimate 70’s finish!

PRODUCT OF THE MONTH Kerastase Elixir Ultime is the secret of magnificent hair and our ultimate hero product at Royston Blythe this month! The sunshine is out, curls and tousles are the look of the season and your hair needs to look naturally polished. Elixir Ultime will keep hair looking sensationally healthy, nourished and beautiful whatever the length or style. It is oh-soeasy to use and combines four precious oils to beautify the hair. By using only a few drops, your hair can be transformed into a silky, weightless matter, perfectly suited to summer styling.

Curl Crush Thought the perm was one of the 80’s best forgotten secrets? Think again. The perm is firming back for summer but to re-create those big sexy curls whilst still keeping your hair looking current, you need to work to the new perm rules. 1. Scaffolding! Consider your perm the scaffolding that will help you create big and beautiful curls. Tongs, texture dust and plenty of teasing with a back combing brush are an absolute must to ensure the soft, unstructured and natural looking curls that have been making their way up and down the runway over recent months. 2. To get that real natural curl, which is ultimately the desired effect, we would suggest a root perm to add oomph before applying tongs through the mid lengths and ends. 3. Colouring adds stress to the hairs’ structure and can play havoc with the condition so it is important to seek professional advice to check that your hair is suitable for the treatment. Regular treatments and an excellent home hair care regime that has been prescribed specifically for your hair by a specialist is an absolute must. Jonathan Saunders

Icelandic Beauty As you fly high above the Icelandic landscape over the numerous fjords, volcanoes and other tectonic activity, visible through the aeroplane portal there’s another act of nature taking place — but this time, it’s part man-made Words: Andrew Riley

70 BEAUTY

V

isible by air as you fly into Reykjavik airport, a huge greenhouse (the size of a football pitch) stands in splendid isolation amongst the stunning Icelandic countryside. There, growing in precisely organised rows, is barley, cultivated in 2000-year-old volcanic pumice. Barley is the most prominent ingredient used to manufacture one of Iceland’s most successful exports, BioEFFECT — a range of anti-ageing products that have taken the world by storm. And, the hype surrounding this product isn’t all hot (sulphuric) air, it has proven scientific results. We talk to Professor Björn Örvar, founder of BioEFFECT about how this product has become an Icelandic success story: WHAT’S UNIQUE ABOUT BIOEFFECT? The secret ingredient is EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor), which you have to produce in cells, and is normally achieved using bacteria or animal cells. We developed a new system to produce EGF in the seeds of barley. It took us quite a number of years to develop this system as it’s so difficult to produce these proteins. We can see this by their price, they are probably one of the most expensive proteins which are not only used in BioEFFECT, but for medical treatments and research across the world. The BioEFFECT range is a very much a bi-product of our global production and supply of EGF for its medical and research properties. HOW DOES IT WORK? EGF is naturally produced within skin cells for skin renewal, and as we age, its production reduces. Our products react to the skins natural ability to produce EGF resulting in an antiageing effect. Scientifically we can’t yet assert why the product does work, but we’ve published extensive human trial research that demonstrate how effective our product is.

IS THIS PRODUCT UNIQUE? No, there’re many EGF products available in the US and Korea, however what makes BioEFFECT so unique and successful, is that the EGF isn’t manufactured via human or animal matter but from barley grown in extremely fertile Icelandic conditions. Our product is so pure in fact, you could safely drink it. HOW’S THE BARLEY PRODUCED? In our greenhouse which is lit 24 hours a day and is green-powered by geothermal energy from hot springs, plays the first part of the product process. It is here where thousands of barley shoots are grown in conditions that fully utilise the perfect climate and resources of the county – volcanic pumice for planting the seeds and watered with pure Icelandic spring water. We are the only company to develop a process that grows EGF naturally. WANT HAPPENS NEXT? In sterilised laboratory conditions, the EGF is extracted and mixed with only eight other ingredients; our 30 day treatment is the most potent and effective but works seamlessly with others within our range including a day cream and eye serum. WHAT’S YOUR MOST SIGNIFICANT PROOF OF THE PRODUCTS EFFECTIVENESS? During a four week clinical trial we used the product on the skin of a 52-year-old woman, and we were able to reduce her age by more than 10 years, giving her skin the density of a 40-year-old.

Some fans call it a miracle cream. Some call it the elixir of youth. It has caused a huge stir since it appeared on the market in 2010. Relying on word of mouth in an industry dominated by glossy advertising, the Icelandic firm’s product has won thousands of fans, including celebrities like Uma Thurman. In Iceland, a third of women over 30 use it and it is the first product to top British Airways’ inflight sales that wasn’t cigarettes or alcohol. While some of the science baffles me, the results don’t and fans around the world are swearing by this magic formula that uses just nine ingredients. The product has now won a host of awards and the backing of experts such as Dr Ronald Moy, professor of dermatology at the University of California and former president of the American Academy of Dermatology. The 30 day treatment priced at £125 for 15ml is not the cheapest, but compared to other big names on the market, which can cost anything from £350 - £1,000 it could be considered an absolute steal. I’ve personally used the whole product range (30 day treatment, day cream and eye serum) as does my mother, both of us believe it certainly has the effect of giving the skin a much fresher, youthful and healthy glow – frankly we’re hooked. BioEFFECT is available to buy in Selfridges, Bullring and at bioeffect.co.uk

WHAT’S NEXT FOR BIOEFFECT? As well as advancing our EGF research and its anti-ageing properties, we will continue to develop our product range; we’ve recently added an EGF body lotion and day serum.

EGF day serum, £125, Daytime Cream for dry skin, £55, EGF eye serum, £65

Insiders guide to Madrid Visiting a foreign city for a short break can be daunting — and exploring all the local hotspots and hidden gems in 48 hours can be a challenge. We took a weekend trip to the Spanish capital to experience Madrid like a local Words by Mike Raven

92 LIFE

M

adrid is a city of picturesque boulevards, grand palatial spaces and manicured public gardens, and with the third largest population in Europe you can guarantee there’s a lot to do and see. Arriving in the capital we were surprised by the sheer amount of heritage we encountered in the short journey from the airport to our hotel. Every building dripping in culture and elegance. An air of relaxed sophistication runs deep through the veins of the city with something new to discover at every corner; experiencing all of this is easier than you might think. Even with excellent and affordable transport links (€12 for a ten trip ticket), not once on our trip did we hop on the metro or one of the 170 bus routes the city has to offer. The best way to soak in Madrid is on foot. The centre is surprisingly condensed and you’re never far away from the next gem. We stayed in the El Barrio de las Letras (Library Quarter) neighborhood in the center of Madrid, close to the Prado museum and the ‘Golden Triangle of art’, which was the perfect base to explore.

LIVE LIKE A LOCAL When visiting a new city there’s nothing better than throwing yourself into the lifestyle of the locals. Madrid has a pleasant mixed pace of day-to-day life; there is a relaxed bustle about it. Start your trip by getting into the thick of it – exploring the streets will lead you to the Plaza Mayor. Surrounded

with classical architecture, local shops and cafés, this plaza has been host to multitudinous events, including bullfights, football matches and even public executions. It’s the perfect introduction to the city, and, a great place for a light lunch if you can get a table at one of the many popular local eateries of an evening. Another great place to start your day is the

pit stop here to refuel it’s still a must see. Further down the Calle Mayor, the Plaza de la Villa, once home to the town hall and prison of Madrid in 1696, is probably the finest example of the vast diversity of architecture Madrid plays host to everything from 15th century renaissance through to 17th century barroco madrileñ. For those who want to experience Madrid in all its palatial glory, look no further than the Palacio Real de Madrid. The official residence of the Spanish royal family is surrounded by beautiful gardens, and the Plaza de Ote which separates the palace and the opposing opera house is a great place to take a break and soak in the culture and weather! The Catedral de la Almudena also sits next to the palace, well known for its colourful chapels and Neo-Romanesque crypt housing a 16th century image of the Virgen de la Almudena. If you’re anything like us, sometimes all that sightseeing can be tiring! Parque del Retiro, one of Madrid’s largest 19th century parks at 350 acres, is located just behind the Prado museum and is the perfect way to relax after a morning of intense sight seeing. There’s a beautiful boating lake where you can hire a small rowing boat and soak up the sun in front of the huge colonnade and statue of King Alfonzo XII. Other attractions include the rose garden housing the Fountain of the Falling Angel, the Palacio de Cristal and two museums.

Puerta del Sol – Spanish for ‘Gate of the Sun’, this plaza marks the very centre of the city and is right in the middle of the busy shopping streets of Madrid and close to traditional cape makers Seseña. If you’re looking to mix shopping and culture, then you have to pay a visit. It’s a hidden gem of the city and Picasso was even buried in a cape made at Seseña. Just around the corner lies the San Miguel gourmet market. It’s host to a plethora of stalls selling fresh local produce - and as you might imagine from Spain there’s a vast amount of seafood on offer. Even if you don’t make a quick

DID YOU KNOW?! Madrid’s official symbol of the bear on it’s hind legs eating berries from the madrono tree is a metaphor for Madrid’s growth and represents possession and ownership of wood which is necessary for constructing buildings.

93

PLAY LIKE A LOCAL It wouldn’t be a true getaway without time to experience the nightlife that Madrid has to offer. After you’ve started on a tapas tour of the local bars, you’ll be ready to jump head first into exploring the winding streets at twilight. Head back to the San Miguel gourmet market and visit Pinkleton & Wine. If you’re in a group, you can reserve ‘the barrel’ to ensure you have a space to relax and enjoy a nice glass of wine with friends. A good idea if you’re going later in the evening as the market can get very busy. Finally before you head back to your hotel to recover, you need to experience a true Spanish flamenco show. ‘Flamenco Uncovered’ from insidersmadrid.com offers the best way to experience flamenco how it should be, with an insiders look into Spain’s best known art-form from dancers and artists that perform regularly. You’re sure to leave feeling suitably immersed in flamenco culture.

94 LIFE

EAT LIKE A LOCAL The heart and soul of the Spanish foodie scene is without a doubt tapas, and Madrid has everything to offer. You can’t walk 500 yards through the centre without passing a local restaurant serving up local, fresh bite-size delicacies. Traditional tapas are small servings of meat and bread usually shared among friends with a glass of sherry. In a group, the Spanish take it in turns to buy the sherry that comes with free tapas at each bar they visit. Trust us, this is a good way to start off the night. For a truly local experience, try Los Gatos, a quirky little bar complete with ceiling murals and indoor streetlamps. Order a glass of sherry and you’ll be readily supplied with a variety of salty moorish tapas to feast on. Golfo de Bizkaia located on the Plaza de Angel is a modern friendly tapas bar with over 80 varieties of seasonal tapas dishes, just load up your plate with anything from the bar and enjoy. When it comes to settling the bill keep hold of the cocktail sticks and the bar staff will count them up and you can be on your way. All the dishes range between €1-€4. A relaxed night out wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the oldest restaurant in the world – Botin, founded in 1725, it’s a benchmark of traditional cuisine in Madrid. Drenched in heritage and a real family success story; ask any of the super friendly staff to tell you stories about the restaurant and its’ customers and you won’t be disappointed, and Botin is a hotspot for celebrities when they visit the city.

A rich culinary scene with food from every Spanish region on offer, and you could also dine at the world’s oldest restaurant. Wine & Dine At Great Western Arcade

Its history, teamed with independent retailers, makes Great Western Arcade one of the mustvisit destinations on a shopping trip, but over the past year it has transformed into one of the city’s eating and drinking hotspots 96 LIFE

Built over the Great Western Railway in 1874, Great Western Arcade is a Grade II listed Victorian shopping arcade, situated between Colmore Row and Temple Row. With the likes of Liquor Store, Projekt21 and Handmade Boutique already well-established, Great Western Arcade has now seen an influx of food and drink brands that are making it a mouthwateringly good destination.

YORKS ESPRESSO BAR The perfect way to start the day, this is the baby sister to the Newhall Street café. Open from 6.30am (a little later at weekends) it features a La Marzocco espresso machine and the UK’s first cold coffee ‘kegerator’, serving highlycaffeinated cold brew coffee by a beer-style tap. This all comes in addition to the much-loved cakes, pastries, muffins and sandwiches.

ANDERSON & HILL This traditional deli is a favourite with the Colmore Row workforce and shoppers alike, boasting some of the city’s best sandwiches. Anderson & Hill is the coolest pantry you’ll ever come across, with a daily selection of cheeses, cured meats, sausage rolls, scotch eggs, and anything else your tastebuds might desire.

SUSHI PASSION Launched last year by Polish chef Adam Glamacinski, who has 15 years experience in the sushi trade, Sushi Passion serves just 30 covers at a time. There’s always a queue outside, with people fighting to sample everything from traditional miso soup and individual sushi dishes, through to extravagant platters that could serve a small country.

BISTRO 1847 Bistro 1847 was established by super chef Damien Davenport and serves an eclectic vegetarian menu. The ‘Grazing, Sharing and Exploring’ menu, allows you to sample smaller, mezze-style plates and the ‘taste of 1847’ menu is a series of dishes designed by their team of chefs and showcases the best of 1847; using seasonal and foraged elements. Even if you’re a meat-eater, you’ll love this restaurant.

LOKI WINE By far one of the arcade’s best-known brands, Loki Wine takes the meaning of ‘wine merchant’ to a new level. Its trophy cabinet continues to grow month by month, as does the stunning collection of Old and New World wine. Whether you’re a novice or connoisseur, get your hands on a Tasting Card and you’ll have the chance of trying up to 40 wines by the glass at any one time.

AND EVERYTHING ELSE… If you’re not heading to Marbs this summer then you may as well embrace the carbs, and there’s no better place to do it than Great Western Arcade. Get your hands on artisan, freshly-baked goods at The Bread Collection; delicious cakes at Druckers; sandwiches, sausage rolls and everything in between at Greggs; more fillings than you can shake a stick at from Baguette.com, and traditional hot and cold food at The Victorian Restaurant. We also hear on the grapevine that a brand new Greek deli is soon to open in the arcade!

Coconut Chicken with Strawberry & Mango Salsa

Cath Kidston salad bowl, £12

Introducing Totally Sacha. A self-taught Midlands based chef, gathering an international following on YouTube, where he posts weekly recipes with the help of his mystery helper known only as ‘Minion’ 101

LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE

INGREDIENTS: To make two main dishes or four starters you’ll need: 300g Chicken mini-fillets (8 pieces) 65g Cornflour 1.5 Tsp Garlic Powder 1 Tsp Paprika 2 Eggs 85g Breadcrumbs 85g Desiccated Coconut For the salsa you’ll need: 100g Mango 100g Strawberries 50g Red Onion 10g Coriander leaves 1 Tbsp Sweet Chilli Sauce 1 Tbsp Lime Juice

MIX IT UP A LITTLE… Apparently not everyone loves coriander – we’re not judging. If that’s the case you could swap its peppery bitterness for zingy fresh mint.

Crumb coated chicken baked to crispy perfection and served with a fragrant, fresh-flavoured sweet and herby salsa. A filling, healthy dish that tastes of sunshine (and chicken, of course!) 1. Preheat your oven to 220C/Gas Mark 7/425F. 2. Grab three bowls. In the first: Mix the coconut and breadcrumbs with the Paprika. In the second: The cornflour, garlic powder and a generous pinch of salt and pepper. In the third: Gently beat the eggs. 3. Now take each chicken fillet and coat it in the cornflour mixture, then dip into the egg so it’s completely covered, then finally into the coconut and breadcrumb mixture. Make sure each fillet is nicely coated – even pressing some of the breadcrumb mixture into each. Then place each onto an oven-proof tray lined with foil. 4. By now your oven should be up to temperature. But before you pop the chicken into the oven, give each coated fillet a light spray with cooking oil – one of the low-cal pump-action style oils are absolutely ideal for this. Bake on the centre rack. 5. Meanwhile make the salsa. Chop the mango and strawberries into similar sized chunks, finely dice the onion, and gently rip-up the coriander with your hands. Mix these with the lime juice and sweet chilli sauce and leave aside for ten minutes. This will give time for the fruits to become nice and juicy and to combine flavours. 6. After 18 minutes the chicken should be nicely browned. Don’t panic if some of the coconut appears to be burning – it is. But you can’t do much about that, and it’ll add to the crunch! Check the chicken is cooked through, and you’re ready to serve. Check out Sacha’s channel youtube.com/totallysacha You’ll also find some of his recipe videos on stylebham.com

In addition to these exciting revamps, The Oriental restaurant is being transformed into Aluna, a brand new bar to arrive at the Mailbox, due to open its doors at the beginning of June! Not forgetting some of our old favourites, Zizzi has revealed an extensive spring summer menu. We love the look of the new rustica pizza selection - their signature pizza, but bigger with more toppings. And we are sure that the Rustica Zizzi Ham & Eggs will be a new favourite amongst brunch lovers, a mozzarella base topped with two free range eggs, coppa ham, asparagus, spinach and a dash of smoked garlic oil. Pennyblacks is the perfect place for meeting up with friends and enjoying long summer evenings. Their ‘Tapitiser’ selection is great for sharing with tasty options like breaded mozzarella sticks with bloody mary sauce and pretzel pieces for dipping into baked garlic Camembert.

At the Heart of the Game T

he origins of lawn tennis date back over 130 years when, in 1859, a Major Harry Gem and Augurio Perera marked out a court and first played the game in Ampton Road, Edgbaston. Over the next decade they developed the laws of the game and soon most of the respectable homes in Edgbaston had their very own courts. It was only natural then that the first clubs emerged close to Ampton Road in Edgbaston. Amongst these was the Priory Lawn Tennis Club, which first occupied two courts on Pershore Road before moving to its current site in the early 1880s. Nearby on Edgbaston Park Road, the Edgbaston Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club was founded in 1878. It was set in the grounds of ‘The Vale’ and is now home to Birmingham’s university students. Edgbaston Priory Club as we know it today is the result of a merger between the two long established clubs. It came about in May 1963 when a disastrous fire completely destroyed Priory’s clubhouse. The club has continued to play a key role in the development of lawn tennis through hosting international tournaments and nurturing the next generation of talent.

TENNIS LEGENDS King’s Heath born, Ann Jones, a life member of the Club enjoyed a glittering tennis career, winning Wimbledon in 1969, two French Open singles titles, and reaching six other Grand Slam singles finals. It was she, with the support of the Lawn Tennis Association, who brought the Edgbaston Cup, now known as the Aegon Fred Perry and Dan Maskell teaching students

Classic Birmingham, to the Club in 1982. Many more tennis legends have graced Edgbaston Priory Club’s courts, among them, Fred Perry, Dan Maskell (for many years the BBC’s voice of Wimbledon), Bjorn Borg, and Martina Navratilova, and more recently, Greg Rusedski and Maria Sharapova. Maria Sharapova, who barely qualified for her first Edgbaston tournament as a 17-year-old in 2004, went on to win at Edgbaston Priory and at Wimbledon the following month. This year’s Aegon Classic Birmingham boasts the best player line up in the tournament’s history, The 1902 tennis team including ten of the world’s top 20, three Grand Slam champions and two former world No.1 players. Grand Slam winner, Victoria Azarenka, looking ahead to to her first trip to Birmingham said: “I always love coming to Britain for the grass court tournaments. I have heard great things about Birmingham and the tournament, and I’m really looking forward to playing.” Set in 14 acres of sheltered, landscaped grounds, the club welcomes new members to enjoy its superb facilities for tennis, squash and racketball. If racket sports aren’t your thing, there are indoor and outdoor swimming pools (heated all year round), a fitness suite and exercise studio, steam room and outdoor spa, as well as massages and beauty treatments and, of course, the wonderful club house in which to relax when the workout is done.
