elcome to our winter career issue that celebrates the talent of our fabulous and inspiring locals. I’ve actually wanted to do a work edit since I started my position as editor all the way back in January. Check it out on page 27, there’s top tips on acing interviews, exactly what to wear now and advice from some of the world’s most powerful businesswomen, as well as advice from some exceptional home-grown talent. We’ve got so much exciting creative talent in the city, (not surprising that we are the most entrepreneurial city outside of London) which we need to shout about! There are so many incredible men and women in this issue: we talk to locals Ben and Jodie Cook who run Clever Tykes, a children’s book series that encourages business skills in young children and are currently stocked in Harrods and across primary schools in the UK! Pretty amazing stuff. Our lead interview is with the one and only Dame Joan Collins (holds in excitement) over on page 21 and we speak to local hero Tim Andrews about his love of the city and Birmingham charity LoveBrum in our Life section. Enjoy!

n true McQueen style, the material was paired with an edgy finish as models supported Victorian silhouettes and lace bodices. Powder pink and crimson fur detailing juxtaposed against dark shades, highlighting the change of material. Delicate touches of fur around the collars of leather trench coats created a sophisticated yet eccentric look- channelling a Lolita vibe. The use of fur as a mild accessory can transform a staple into a statement and is easily workable into any wardrobe through its removability. Think faux fur stoles over black woollen coats, or trims around leather jackets. Lavin chose a slightly different route and experimented with pattern, as the models donned technicolor dream coats of contrasting colour. Fur patchwork on calf length garments blended well with the retro print, while shearling draped over bodies in an ode to the 70s. The ever outrageous fun fur is one that can be easily reproduced through subtle multi- tonal styling. Instead of using Lavin’s bold colour clash, opt for alternative fur pieces that are similar in shade. Whether choosing a daring mash up of texture, or playing it safe with a scarf, one thing that was certain on the AW catwalk was that fur can be worn in a multitude of ways. Saint Laurent grunged up their collection with ragged and shaggy designs, whereas Marni picked an oriental theme to introduce gentle fur pockets and loose sleeves. The differing looks

AW15 Trend: Fur Fur made its elegant debut during the collections this year, with many designers dabbling in the classic fabric show the variation of fur and its versatility into personal style; from classy to trashy, they key is working it into your current wardrobe. This season called for an unusual take on the fabric, as designers focused on fur accessories. Prada’s mink fur charm and Adrienne Landau’s fox fur puffy key chain added a quirky twist to traditional key rings. For those looking for a cheaper alternative to the trend, Dune has created a line of faux fur Pom-Pom keyrings available in: hot pink, baby pink, electric blue and a classic black. Add a splash of colour to jazz up plain bags, or if you’re interested in committing to the trend, both Topshop and Zara carry fur bags in several unique styles. Mix up the look with either a pastel clutch or an oversized backpack to really make an impact. But what about the ethical implications? Does faux mean comprising on quality? Now, thanks to modern manufacturing the popularity of faux fur has rivalled the real deal with many designers refusing to use animals for
fashion. Stella McCartney’s Paris Fashion Week collection titled ‘fur-free fur’ focused on bringing a sense of luxury to the synthetic material. She stated “I wanted to show the customer and the fashion industry that you really don’t need to use [real] fur anymore. You can’t tell the difference with it on the runway.” With the younger audience already preferring imitation fabric, McCartney’s message is one that will speak to older generations; proving that cruelty free can be just as deluxe and high fashion as the real thing. From the runways of Paris, to the rails of the highstreet; fur accessorising is about building up an outfit. If your style is classic and smart, a fur stole wrapped over a tailored jacket will instantly add a touch of elegance. Whereas, if you prefer a grunge or punk look, an animal print faux fur jacket will make a striking statement. With everything from puffy headbands to fluffy mittens available to buy, fur has never looked so good. Winter 2015 | Style Birmingham | 17

A-LINE High-street retailer Jigsaw has upped their fashion game with the new A-Line collection. Style-wise, think sharp tailoring, pleats, oversized petal shapes and kimono sleeves in the richest and most sumptuous of fabrics. The colour palette mimics that of any classic, well groomed lady – understated and neutral, with a hint of colour in some of the detailing. Nine by Savannah is a beautifully boho collection of slip dresses, lace tops, swallow-printed blouses, blanket coats, complemented by suede knee-high boots and fringed bags. Not usually one for a celebrity fashion label, as we all know much of these are about a quick win for the retailer, Nine by Savannah is different. Savannah studied at the renowned Central Saint Martins college of fashion, before going on to work for both Matthew Williamson and Alexander McQueen, so she certainly knows her stuff. From the golden era of Hollywood to the Dynasty glamour of the 1980s, Dame Joan Collins OBE has always been the ultimate ‘timeless beauty’, so it’s no coincidence that she chose this as the name for her new luxury beauty brand. Here she reveals her top beauty secrets, why she always does her own make-up and the tricks of the trade she learnt from Marilyn Monroe’s make-up artist… Words: Laura Smith
22 | Style Birmingham | Winter 2015
F
or Dame Joan, her love of beauty began as a young girl at home with her family. As the daughter of a theatre-agent father and former champion ballroom dancer mother (whose Uncle Godfrey also happened to own Rimmel), she would watch her glamorous mother and numerous aunts apply make-up, and try and copy them. Her father encouraged her to pursue acting, and as her career took off at the age of 16, she soon began to learn about beauty from the best in the business. ‘It was only when I went to Hollywood for my first American film that I learnt to how to properly apply makeup,’ she tells us. ‘I was fortunate enough to work with Allan “Whitey” Snyder who also did Marilyn Monroe and many other Fox stars.’ Even then, Joan was adamant that she didn’t want a make-up artist and would prefer to do her own. ‘Allan kindly said that he would show me how to properly apply make-up myself, and ever since I’ve done my own make-up for everything.’ As a woman who now claims she can apply her make-up ‘in the dark, in a hut, with the light of a torch, while talking at the same time’, she has certainly perfected the art. As a Golden Globe-winning actress, author and producer, Joan has built a hugely successful career that has established her as a true international icon. For the astute businesswoman though this was still not enough, and after years of working with some of the greatest beauty professionals in television and cinema, Joan decided to take all her insider knowledge and passion for beauty and develop her own beauty brand. ‘Creating
a make-up and beauty line has been on my radar for years, however it is a very complicated process to put together from start to finish and you need a huge team with so many skills to get it right. I couldn’t have done it without them – I have designers, chemists and experts who all specialise in the makeup industry.’ Unlike some other celebrity ranges, Joan makes sure she is directly involved in developing and approving all her products. ‘There are so many celebrities who act as ambassadors for brands nowadays, but I am a real partner for my range which makes the process very different. I have been part of the collection from the beginning; I’ve chosen the colours, had input into the design and made sure that all benefits of the products are what I believe in.’ This input even extends to the packaging to ensure your products (and make-up bags!) always look their best. ‘There are so many make-up brands nowadays which package their products in black plastic, and using this on lipstick means the lids frequently spilt in your bag leaving you with a hideous mess! This is why we have created the packaging in metal – they will always protect your products and look so elegant.’ The actress is widely regarded to have ‘created’ the look of Dynasty’s infamous Alexis Carrington, who was one of the most glamorous characters in television history (for which incidentally, she was reportedly the highest-paid woman on television at the time). So it’s perhaps not surprising that for a woman who admits even wearing lipstick to the gym, glamour and luxury dictate her approach to beauty. ‘I think it makes such a difference when

you have something which feels good quality and looks luxurious because it makes you feel more glamorous having it. Why should you have something ordinary when you can have something glamorous?!’ As you would expect from the prolific tweeter and author of numerous novels and memoirs (with over 50 million sales worldwide), Joan isn’t afraid to speak her mind. In the past she has spoken out against pressures put on young women to look a certain way and achieve an expectation of ‘Barbie-doll beauty’ that doesn’t exist in real life. Beauty has always been synonymous with the film industry, but when asked if young actresses have a harder time with fame today than they did in 1950s Hollywood, she disagrees. ‘Back in the 1950s as an actress you were always taken more seriously if one was not too attractive. Elizabeth Taylor and Vivien Leigh are examples of this, their beauty stopped them from being acknowledged as good actresses until later in their lives.’ In contrast, Dame Joan has remained very quiet about the recent painful loss of her sister, simply posting on her blog, ‘Farewell to my beautiful brave baby sister. I will love you and miss you forever. Rest in peace’, alongside a black and white childhood photo of the duo. After a tumultuous private life that has involved a number of marriages Dame Joan is now happily married to Percy Gibson, and with homes in London, LA and New York, she is happiest relaxing in her house in near St Tropez with her husband. At 82, she still has those razor cheekbones and incredible skin and unsurprisingly is adamant that beauty is not just for the young. Joan maintains she’s never gone under the knife but what are her tips for maintaining such great skin over the years? ‘My secret to looking youthful is being religious about my skincare regime, and always making sure I keep my face out of the sun, protecting it with a good foundation such as my first base and SPF, and of course a happy disposition wherever possible helps,’ she explains. ‘I also believe avocado is really good for you inside and out, I try and eat one avocado a day and a lot of my skincare products have avocado in them because it is such a great moisturiser.’ Empowering other women to look and feel their best is also very important to Dame Joan who has created the range for ‘all women from 11 to 111’. As she explains, ‘creating the range has enabled me to give others that same confidence when wearing make-up which is what inspired me in the beginning,’ she tells us. ‘I have been very fortunate to learn many beauty secrets from so many great make-up artists and celebrities through the years so I wanted to share my knowledge with other women, as I know how confident and great make-up makes me feel.’ When it comes to beauty there’s no-one else we’d rather take advice from… The Timeless Beauty new Autumn/Winter range is available from Joancollinsbeauty.com

LAYERED UP The key to autumn winter dressing is layering – here’s how to stay warm and look cool Words: Ruth Emmerson
H
ot chocolate, dark nights and comfy pajamas; winter is nearly here! I will admit I’m not great with the cold but I do love Autumn/Winter fashion the most and struggle to say no to another pair of ankle boots, furry slipper boots and another coat which I absolutely must need/have... An important step when it comes to your wardrobe this winter is layering. Why, might you ask? Well here in the UK we all know how unpredictable our weather can be so your outfit needs to be versatile and one to handle whatever is thrown at you – weather wise that is! One minute I am throwing off my jacket, the next, hunting down my scarf and gloves. Layering gives you the opportunity to change your outfit throughout the day in accordance with the weather, without actually getting changed. Layering should be your best friend when the colder months hit as, especially in the UK, the weather can change quicker than my bank balance gets drained!
First off, get yourself the perfect outerwear. Depending on what you prefer go for a winter coat that’s an investment, one you can crack out every year, or a good cape if you are hardened to the cold. There are so many styles to choose from so don’t feel as though a winter coat has to be something that will swamp you and give nothing to your outfit; work your coat into your outfit. Personally, I am a huge fan of the trench and oversized waterfall-type coats as I find them most flattering for my figure. If you are petite avoid a coat that is too long or oversized as you don’t want to look weighed down by it; remember you’re wearing the coat, the coat shouldn’t wear you. Think about length, fabric and how it does up too. A belt shows off an enviable waist, whereas an open, waterfall style is great for an oval body shape as it disguises your middle. If you’re bigger on top, opt for less detail on your top half – so single-breasted or open. Pear shaped? Do the opposite and
draw attention to your top half in order to detract from your bottom. Think about outfits that are versatile and can easily adapt to changes in weather. When it comes to layering I think you should be able to add or take off one or two layers easily whilst still keeping the whole outfit in one piece. When it comes to your top half, I am a big fan of the shirt and jumper combo; it’s smart but you can have fun with it and add your personality. Go for a really bold jumper with a simple shirt and add a statement necklace. Or opt for a roll neck in a gorgeous winter shade such as berry, and throw over a faux fur gilet with gloves and high-waisted trousers.Always think about colours, textures and patterns as this is what helps bring your outfit to life and helps to keep it exciting. Always think about being able to take one layer off or add one layer on easily for when the weather changes its mood.

Meet the inspiring entrepreneurs and innovators proudly helping to make Birmingham a start-up hotspot
Ben and Jodie Cook, 26, are award-winning entrepreneurs who founded children’s storybook brand Clever Tykes in 2013 with the aim of inspiring enterprise in children through positive entrepreneurial role models. The three titles, Walk-it Willow, Change-it Cho and Code-it Cody are now being used in primary schools across the country and are sold in Harrods and Selfridges in London.
THE RS AUTHO
Kids have great role models in traditional jobs and there are also positive characters in Postman Pat, Fireman Sam and Bob the Builder, but it’s just not the same when it comes to entrepreneurs. Business people are generally portrayed as greedy and mean – just look at Mr Burns from The Simpsons, Matilda’s dodgy car dealer dad Harry Wormwood and Ebenezer Scrooge from A Christmas Carol. So we decided to create some of our own that would make children see the world differently and be positive about their capabilities. At the time we came up with the idea of enterprising storybooks for children we were both busy with our early careers. Jodie was into her second year with her own business, JC Social Media, and I was working as a model.
28 | Style Birmingham | Winter 2015
Having seen Jodie’s success, I was increasingly interested in entrepreneurship and was looking for a project with which I could enter the world of business, too! Back in 2012, Jodie was an ambassador for the Startup Loans company where she met 11 other young entrepreneurs. Amazingly, 11 of the 12 of them had grown up with an entrepreneurial role model in their family. It turns out that this phenomenon is welldocumented and positive role models are seriously important when it comes to raising aspirations and increasing a child’s life chances. The books were highlighted in Lord Young’s national government report “Enterprise for All” – that’s probably about as strong an endorsement as we could have hoped for! Jodie’s also been to Number 10 Downing Street a couple of times to discuss enterprise and the books, and we both attended the Queen’s garden party at Buckingham Palace in the summer. If you want to create children books…Research, research, research! You have to develop a product that is saleable in the marketplace. Unless you know the sector, the audience, what’s already out there and what has been successful before, developing the right product and effectively taking it to market is almost impossible.

Women / The Edit
Jada Lyton, 28, is the founder of JADA, a fashion brand on a mission to take the stress out of finding outfits to wear. ‘Everything is wearable and interchangeable – it’s very mix and match and I work with a tonal colour palette.’ Jada began working for London-based womenswear designer Georgia Hardinge, before moving back to Birmingham to create her own brand. Since launching last year, she’s showcased at London Fashion Week and has stockists in Asia. I wanted the brand to be wearable and accessible. I don’t want pom poms or a rainbow of colours – it needs to look classic, clean and modern. I’d always wanted to take key staple pieces and turn them into special items. Everyone needs a biker jacket, everyone needs a staple coat and everyone needs a little black dress. I’ve been a designer from a young age; it’s in my family. My mum had her own dressmaking business and I’d spend hours flicking through her stacks of Vogue magazines. She didn’t realise it was influencing me but because I was around it so much, it was just always in me. When I went to university I found my own style and even when I left I carried on designing, I never really stopped. I thought it would be great to give something back to my home city. I was really inspired to create something coming from Birmingham. When I was looking for internships, there were no creative opportunities in fashion design in Birmingham. Now I’m getting lots of students from Birmingham City University and the surrounding areas wanting to intern with me, and they are really grateful to have that opportunity. Being from Birmingham is working to my advantage and I think it’s refreshing for people to see that there’s something outside of London. The brand had a really good response at LFW and every woman actually said they’d wear every single piece from the collection. I was a little bit nervous to begin with, but people are really warming to JADA and saying, “Yeah, why not be from Birmingham!”
THE DESIGNER
If you want to be a fashion designer… Prepare to work really hard. It’s a very tough industry and you need to be able to take negativity and turn it into a positive and move on really quickly.

What is the key to starting up your own business?
Women / Careers
Here, some of our most incredible homegrown talent share their secrets of business success. Get ready to be inspired
“You need to have passion and some serious tenacity. Starting up a business is full of highs and lows. One minute I’m worried that I don’t have enough work and the next I’m panicking that I have too much work and I don’t know how I’ll juggle both my busy businesses and my family life.”
Lisa Redgrave, Founder, wedding planning company Hitched in Italy; Co-owner, Redwood Girls
‘’You need lots of determination. A tenacious character also helps! In the beginning it can be very tough, I remember in the early days willing the phone to ring or an email to pop up. However even through those challenging first few months, I completely focused on my business goals, never diluting my plans – as tempting as it may be! Give your business the 100% hard work it needs to succeed.’’ Laura Hannon, Creative Director, The Central School of Make-up
“Make sure the market is big enough and make sure the economics (profitability) of your model will work. Convince the best people you can to join your team and execute your plan to the best of your ability. Use metrics rather than assumptions where you can.” Nick Holzherr, CEO, Whisk.com
“I wish someone told me that self-employment was a viable option. When I was in school we were never told we could start our own business and I wish I knew then what I know now. Would have saved me a decade of career hopping as I discovered being an employee wasn’t for me.” Justice Williams MBE, Founder, West Midlands Woman Of The Year Awards
“Make sure you know your customer and market completely! Live and breathe the life they do!” Sharmadean Reid, Founder, WAH Nails. The WAH London range is available exclusively to Boots
“Find a real problem to solve, something that causes pain because where there is pain there is money. Customers pay money to solve painful problems everyday; if you are not solving a real painful problem then you are going to find it tough to get customers to part with money. The hardest part of starting a business is the start-line, too many people talk about it but never cross the starting line. My advice is just jump, what’s the worst that could happen? Treat everything you do as little experiments; there is no such thing as failure, only learning opportunities.” Simon Jenner, Founder, Urban Coffee “I have found that collaboration is a massive part of starting a successful business. There’s no point in having great ideas, keeping them to yourself, and not being able to make things happen. Birmingham is a city that loves to pull together and since starting EAST VILLAGE. I have met great people and businesses; some are technically competitors but when you let the barriers down and work together, you can achieve brilliant things.”

Top Tips for Interview Success Words: Daisy Holden
Interviews can be tricky territory to navigate, so we have put together a failsafe guide to help you conquer your nerves under difficult questioning WHAT ARE THE TOP 3 INTERVIEW QUESTIONS: What can you bring to this job that others cannot? Personal traits are a good starting point, then talk about your skills and experience – what do you have that others don’t? Identify your USP. Why do you want to work here? The most important answer here is an honest one. Show your enthusiasm for the job role, company and the role within the job sector that it plays. What role does this job play in your career path? Give me an example of one of your biggest achievements? This question does not have a right or wrong answer; it is designed to show the interviewer how you think and what is important to you. For example, does the achievement focus on an individual level or impacting on others, are you a creative thinker or maybe more logical? So think carefully about your answer!
BODY LANGUAGE: Maintain eye contact, it shows that you are alert and listening. However, don’t lock eyes, as it can be convfrontational! Shifty eyes can signal that you are not telling the truth. Do not fidget; it will look like you’re not paying attention and easily restless. Avoid bad posture. Do not slouch, you will look unprofessional!
HOW TO FAKE CONFIDENCE: Know the job you’re applying for. Research is key to a successful interview, so know the ins and outs of the company. Smile. Looking friendly and approachable can go a long way to hiding your nerves! Stay calm, everyone gets pre-interview nerves and the interviewer will expect that. Remember to breathe deeply and not talk too quickly.
WHAT NOT TO DO IN AN INTERVIEW SITUATION: Do not lie on your CV, as you’ll get found out! You don’t want to have awkward conversations with the interviewer – they will quiz you on the things on your CV like your personal skills and previous job history. Don’t dress too casually. It shows that the interview is not that important to you, as you haven’t made much of an effort with your appearance. Remember your appearance is the first thing the interviewer sees, so make the right impression! Avoid clichés, everyone uses them and they are not original. For example, “I’m a team player”, “good communicator” or, “I have a passion for…”. Say something meaningful instead.

First of all, let’s explore the classics. My every day smoky eye comes in the form of a single eyeshadow from MAC called Antiqued. Antiqued is a satin chocolate brown that gleams like copper when it hits the light. This warm infusion means that it makes every eye colour pop. To take piercing eyes BEAUTY UPDATE: to the next level, try Cranberry (a burgundy shimmer) or Coppering (a burnt red shimmer). Now where are you going to put it all? Well, after years of requests Tom Ford are finally bringing out a luxury leather make-up case. There won’t be many of them so it will be a total treat for make-up collectors. And while we’re on the subject, he’s also bringing back the miniature Lips And Boys lipsticks from last Christmas so you’ll be needing a few of those too. With such an injection of colour, I’d recommend keeping skin fresh and dewy so as to let your eyes or lips do the talking. Illamasqua’s Skin Base foundation is the ultimate for flawless but luminous skin, and Laura Mercier has perfected highlighter this winter with the launch of her Candleglow palette. With six different shimmer shades, you can bespoke your highlighter to suit your skin tone or mix into your blusher for a glamorous party look. My top tip for winter colour is to have fun. Mix it up; who says you can’t team a dark eye with a dark lip? Who says mascara should be black? Try a maroon or a chocolate brown. To finish, give a spritz of the Make-up Setting Spray from Urban Decay to keep it in place regardless of the weather. And before bed, melt it all away with a cleanser like The Body Shop’s Camomile Cleansing Oil. Urban Decay make-up setting spray, £9, Debenhams

HINT OF COPPER HAIR We have seen a significant increase in requests for super-rich colour and we create this look using a combination of deep reds, coppers and auburn shades. Red hair is trending and the softer, more subtle dimensions are key to a natural and stylish looking finish. A hint of copper can be the perfect compliment to darker skin tones or a dark red cast similar to Kate Middleton’s will liven up a cool complexion. Whilst there is no denying that red hair is high maintenance and requires thought – there is a red hairstyle for everyone and a good, in depth consultation with your colourist will help you find your perfect shade.
Hair Update THE RULES OF CARING FOR RED HAIR Before you switch to the ruby side there are quite a number of considerations most importantly, you should assess the condition of your hair. Dry-damaged hair is porous which will cause red hair to fade considerably - you need to ensure your hair is in optimum condition to keep it looking healthy, glossy and vibrant in between salon visits. At the end of every recommend that each of our clients opt for a prescribed Kérastase Fusio Dose to nourish, restore and lock the new colour into the hair. This is vital to keep red hair radiant for longer. Kérastase Chroma Captive Shampoo is our favourite as it extends the life of colour and enhances it to perfection. Hair is left silky-smooth and soft. The less you cleanse your hair the better. Naturally, the more frequently the hair is washed, the quicker you can expect it to fade. When it comes to hair, who doesn’t want a little more oomph? And thickness and volume and all the rest. Good thing we’ve got Luke Hersheson, king of the blowdry and stylist to Claudia Schiffer and Sienna Miller on hand to show us how. Cheryl FernandezVersini, eat your heart out
THICKER, FULLER, BETTER Big and Brushed

GET THE RIGHT CUT
The longer the hair, the heavier it is and so volume gets weighed down. ‘One of the biggest problems is when people come in with really thick, all one length and expect a blow-dry to last days. No blow-dry on that type of hair is going to last long. A few layers or a bit of layering on the ends will give it some shape and help to sustain volume,’ he says. It all comes down to: the better the hair cut, the easier it is to maintain and gain volume. ‘For Sienna Miller it’s all about a great haircut. I cut Sienna’s hair into a bob last year and the hairstyle has done a lot of the work. Keira Knightly has it cut around her face which gives the hair lift and means you don’t have to do much work on the blowdry.’ He recommends asking your hairdresser to razor out on the edges so it’s not so blocky. ‘Fine hair looks good with a blunt hair cut as it gives you that chunkier-looking base. On thick hair, blunt cuts tend to hang in a clump, so it’s about weight distribution and making the ends look softer.’
INVEST IN YOUR TOOLS
Your tools are your greatest ally in creating fuller-looking hair and Luke swears by his. ‘Our Hersheson hair dryer and brushes deliver over 10 blow-dries a day, and because the barrel of the brush heats up so fast, it decreases your blow-dry time. You can’t get great volume with bad tools.’
3
GO FOR A BLOW-DRY
4
Half and Half blowdry
Is your hair in need of a pep up? The speedy and affordable kind? Hersheson’s are the ones responsible for introducing the blow-dry bar concept to the UK back in 2006. ‘We always felt that you couldn’t get cool, catwalk hair in regular salons and people want access to the hair they see in magazines.’ The best thing about the blow-dry is that the awkwardness of trying to explain exactly what you want is eliminated. Choose from a menu of 12 looks and for £28, you’ll be in and out in 30 minutes with a rich blow-dry that can last up to four days (depending on your hair type). For some serious lift, Luke recommends the ‘half and half ’ or the ‘big and brushed’. Hershesons blow-dry bar at Harvey Nichols, a wash and style costs £28; 0121 616 6021
PUMP UP THE VOLUME Schwarzkopf Got2b 2 Sexy Big Volume Volumizing Hairspray, £4.07 Spray this volumizing spray onto your fingers and rub into your roots for instant lift with amazing hold.
Bumble and Bumble Thickening Hairspray, £22 If you regularly use heated tools, this is the spray for you. It protects against damage whilst adding volume — result!
Beauty / Hair
Aveda Volumizing Tonic, £16.50 For fine and medium hair, it uses organic aloe and wheat amino acids to combat oil and build volume and shine.
TRY A HAIR BOOSTING HACK
If you have thick hair and can’t get enough volume, a hair piece is a quick and simple solution. ‘Our Bardot hair piece will sit on your crown (where your hair is the heaviest) and you can move the base to create however much volume you want,’ he says.
5
TEACH YOURSELF
As much as we love a rich salon-style blow-dry, recreating it at home is no mean feat. But Luke promises it can be learnt. ‘A great tip is to toss your head upside down and spray with a fine hair spray and tease the hair whilst blasting it with a hair dryer. When you flick your hair back you will get a lot of body instantly.’ A common mistake is to blow-dry the hair all at once or start drying from wet. It’s always best to rough-dry your hair with your hands first. ‘Remember with a blow-dry you’re drying the hair section by section and using the barrel of the brush and hair dryer like you would a heated roller,’ he tells us.
John Frieda 7 Day Volume In-Shower Treatment, £9.99 This new in-shower treatment works wonders on thin, fine hair. It gives lasting volume and even helps improve the condition of your hair.
Kerastase Resistance Volumifique Spray, £17.45 More of a leave-in conditioner, this spray lifts from the root without weighing it down and leaves hair feeling super soft.

Gourmet tacos and nachos are Muy Loco Tacos’ speciality. Served on gluten free taco shells or crunchy tortilla chips are locally sourced vegetables and British-reared meats. Look out for their Paloma cheese steak with home-made tequila mustard or the nutty spinach falafel with peachy margarita chilli sauce.

Their 28 day dry aged Herefordshire beef is the basis of some mouthwatering creations: their Jam Pudding features a beef and black pudding patty while their Buffalo Blue is packed full of their blue shack slaw, blue cheese and a tangy buffalo butter sauce.
Minis aren’t just for driving it turns out. LEISURE
First, theclubandspa is the place to go for a hard workout and well-deserved massage or treatment. Alongside the fantastic gym equipment with integrated TV screens, they have a full studio timetable and dedicated spin studio. They also boast the exclusive Milon circuit, which is a fantastic piece of equipment. It’s a coordinated workout, shown to be 30% more effective than traditional gym sessions, and it only takes about 35 minutes to complete the room – but prepare to work hard! If you ask any of the staff at theclubandspa, they all know people who have lost considerable amounts of weight using Milon. After a hard gym session, a spa session is most definitely needed. The treatments on offer range from massages, facials, and nails to chocolate hydrating wraps! I always opt for their incredible massages, great for working out all of the stress and tension. The next stop is their fabulous spa pool with steam rooms and saunas – absolutely fantastic for a quick dip!
DINING
Next you should take a trip to Madeleine, located on Level 7 of The Cube (Level 7 is street level!). Madeleine has a fantastic range of pastries, salads, sandwiches, cakes and, of course, coffee on offer.
Personally, I love sitting there with my laptop, coffee on my left and a warm croissant on my right – perfect for catching up on bits of work. Also on Level 7, there is a fantastic range of great restaurants that will suit any appetite and taste! From Brazilian at Rodizio Rico, to burgers and shrimp at Bun and Bowl and Japanese cuisine at Shogun Teppanyaki, any craving is well and truly satisfied. Now it is time for a spot of dinner, and we’re heading up high into the sky for this feast! There are lifts in the spa that take you right up to Level 25 of The Cube, the home of Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar and Grill. With its stunning 360-degree views of the city and exquisite décor, if you want to impress, this is the place to go. Stepping out of the lift and walking down into the restaurant, you pass the glorious bar loaded with champagne and a whole array of cocktails. The menu at Marco’s boasts a fantastic range of ‘land’ and ‘sea’ platters, steaks (of course) and a fabulous
range of fresh fish! Steak is the obvious option for me; it’s a steakhouse of course! Melt in the mouth, cooked to perfection – the steak, and the rest of the food is top notch. I’d also strongly recommend saving room for dessert; they have a range of Marco’s favourites, including Cambridge Burnt Cream and Knickerbocker Glory.
STAY
Now for the final part of this whistle-stop tour – where to stay. Hotel Indigo is chic 4-star boutique and a great place for a short break; comfy, cool rooms with lots of personality. And the views are absolutely stunning too. I’d recommend seeing the view at sunrise, or at night, both equally as spectacular!
If you want to make your stay a little more permanent, the last five apartments in The Cube are being sold. If you’d like to see The Cube and what it has to offer for a more permanent residence, email concierge@thecube.co.uk to book a place. Winter 2015 | Style Birmingham | 67

& Adin Memetovic, General Manager at Resorts World, talks dapper dressing and exciting developments What can we expect from the restaurants and bars on offer at Resorts World? Something amazing! Every new bar and restaurant talks about being the new this, the new that, but with all the concepts we have created at Resorts World Birmingham, we truly have what no other destination in the UK has to offer! From outlet shopping, spa, hotel, casino and a range of amazing bars and restaurants, there is so much to experience. Whether you’re looking for a world beer and a bite in The World Bar or an exclusive Sashimi Sky Plate accompanied by one of our Wu Xing cocktails in The Sky Bar – we have it all. Bars that truly identify with everyone, from shopper, tourist or event goer to a night out with your mates, Resorts World Birmingham has something to suit you. What does your job entail and what are the best bits? I oversee all the Genting Bar and Leisure operations at the Resort. This means ensuring we have the best people on board, working with the development team to make sure we have the best products on offer, along with creating great events that will add real theatre to these amazing surroundings. The standards of design in each concept are of such a high quality, it makes every day the best bit of my job! (Tasting some of the amazing Wu Xing cocktails is a nice part too!)
Tell us about your career so far… I started as a kitchen porter while I was still at school and trained to be a chef at college. I quickly began to realise that I enjoyed the front of house operations and engaging with guests a lot more than being in the kitchen so I moved front of house. I have worked up and down the country for Mitchells and Butlers, the Laurel Pub Company, Ministry of Sound and for the last eight years I was at Mechu. How would you describe your own personal style and what do you think has influenced it? I would like to say debonair, but I guess that is for someone else to judge! But I do like to be well dressed. You’ll mostly find me in a suit. I really like Reiss and Zara, they both have a fantastic men’s range. A new brand called Sector is amazing and they have to be my favourite upcoming brand; they will be showcasing in London and Paris early next year. My dad has always been a well-dressed man and I’ve grown up thinking how you dress makes a big impression on people. Ozwald Boateng is someone who I really admire and his style has definitely influenced me. I love his clothes and I remember when I first bought a suit by him – I felt like I had won the lottery. I felt amazing and I wore the suit so many times people started to comment that it was the only suit I owned, so it’s now safely locked away! How does your workwear differ from what you’d wear on a weekend? Neat yet informal would have to be my answer. If I could wear a suit all the time I would. First impressions are vital and there is no greater feeling than when you’re in a nicely tailored suit with a crisp shirt on. I believe that the modern man is now measured firstly by how he is dressed. We live in a world where fashion is an everyday must have. I think every man now has an understanding of what is fashionably acceptable. My dry cleaner is like my best friend, the amount of business I have given him over the years has been amazing!

Fashion and celebrity stylist Kalee Hewlett and host of The Clothes Show at Bullring, shares her top styling tips
What’s been your career highlight to date? I’d have to say hosting Design Genius, which was a reality fashion series that was screened at Christmas last year and shot in the Philippines. It’s similar format to Project Runway with Heidi Klum. We gave the designers tasks, like they had to make an accessory in 45 minutes and we’d give them crazy materials like garden racks and shovels in which to make these pieces so it was really great fun. What is your key piece for the winter season? A fur gilet is a must for creating that bohemian vibe and you can also wear it with the Victoriana trend that’s going to be really big this season. Another key piece is a pair of faux leather trousers or if you can afford it, go for real leather. One of the most expensive things in my wardrobe is my £900 leather trousers, but they do last you a lifetime. It’s a great item to have in your wardrobe and coming up to Christmas, you can pair it with a metallic top or play it down with a classic white shirt. How would you describe your personal style? I would say it’s bohemian with a rock and roll edge. I like to be comfortable because you have to be practical doing this job and I’m always running around. You’ll only see me in heels at events, other than that, I live in flats. What are your tips for someone wanting a career in styling? I started out by assisting on shoots and think that’s the best way you can do it. There’s also multiple courses you can do but I think with any job, it’s about getting onsite experience. You need to have a good eye for what works, but you also need to be confident about what you’re putting together. Above all, you need to be extremely hard working, determined and fully focused. You definitely have to be able to work under pressure and more importantly, work fast because it’s such a fast paced environment.

Insider / Music
With a chart topping debut album and a BBC Sound of 2015 win, Years and Years arrived in Birmingham to a sell out show
Tove Stryke
The show started with petite powerhouse, Swedish born Tove Stryke, who came third as a contestant on Swedish Idol in 2009. Since then she’s been slowly paving her way to electro-pop glory. Her twopiece backing band packed a surprising punch to impress an excited audience. Her set was well paced; ‘Ego’ from her album Kiddo is a real pop masterpiece reminiscent of the mid-2000s. The crowd was totally immersed towards the end of the set when Stryke pulled a cover of Britney Spears ‘Baby One More Time’ out
of her music arsenal to send the crowd wild. The moment came for Emre Turkmen, Mikey Goldsworthy and of course the one and only Olly Alexander to finally take to the stage, their visually stunning set resembling their album cover glowed a deep red and the crowd erupted. Foundation opened the show; their epic ballad that surges towards an intense climax gave the hypnotizing Alexander a real chance to showcase his vocal talent from the offset. His stage presence shines through, and with a background in
acting, it’s clear he knows when to hold back and when to give everything to the audience. Their recent success isn’t down to potluck, the band are polished, unique and of the moment. It’s clear from the gig that the band is honest and sincere which has obviously contributed to their success. A mixture of up and down tempo album tracks, all strong enough to stand on their own blended into one single experience. Communion is out now; download from iTunes, £6.99

The Hit Makers
‘I think Marilyn would have wanted to be remembered for her strength’ 53 years after her untimely death, Marilyn Monroe is as popular today as she ever was. Michelle Morgan, author of Marilyn Monroe: Private And Undisclosed, explains her enduring appeal
Words: Maisy Moran
I’ve pored over multiple books on Marilyn, reading the same stories about her films, her tardiness, her wardrobe and her men. And while I enjoy each of them, I rarely gain a lot of new insight into the person she was. Many Marilyn Monroe fans have recommended Marilyn Monroe: Private and Undisclosed by Michelle Morgan. Through the accounts of numerous family members, friends, acquaintances, employees, co-stars and fans, Marilyn Monroe shines through. ‘When I was writing the first edition, (MM: Private and Undisclosed, published in 2007) there were people who refused to speak to me because they had had terrible experiences when speaking to others in the past (their words, not mine). However, I was thrilled when others who had never spoken before put their trust in me and allowed their memories to be recorded. When the book came out, others did come forward to say they had a story to tell, or knew someone who did. That was thrilling to me not only because they wanted to enrich my book, but also because they knew from my past work that I wasn’t out to write a rumour-filled biography. A student of Marilyn’s singing teacher, Hal Schaefer got in touch to tell me that when reading his memories in the book, it was as if the man himself was talking to
him – he could hear his voice very clearly in the text. That meant such a lot to me and it was exactly my intention. I think Marilyn is many things to many people. I would imagine that if you asked ten people why Marilyn is still relevant, there would be ten or more different answers, because everyone has their own interpretation. However, for me, I think she is still relevant because her personality was very modern but also very human – she fought for what she believed in; she created a business; she was interested in politics; very independent, etc. She was scared sometimes, she worried and was insecure too, which are traits I think we can all relate to at some point in our lives. I think Marilyn would have wanted to be remembered for her strength; the way she fought hard to improve her life and her career. Sadly, many people remember her for the way she died; the mystery surrounding it, etc. I think she would be horrified by this to be honest. All those years of hard work and creativity and the first question most people ask is, ‘how do you think she died?’ I hope this will change as time marches on. Marilyn was a fabulous actress, her roles in Bus Stop and The Misfits are testament to that – and she ultimately deserves to be remembered for that.’

PJ’S HIT LIST OUR MAN ABOUT TOWN PJ ELLIS TAKES US THROUGH HIS WINTER CULTURAL CALENDAR Apparently, Christmas is on its way. Yet we have so much to cram in before the portly Mr Claus pops by. So, hopefully this will help. Riding high after the launch of Resorts World on 22 October, I will be taking the kids to the half-term Jurassic Adventure at Solihull Arts Complex on the 23rd; selfishly taking in Jodi Ann Buckley’s One Million Lovely Letters workshop at the Birmingham Rep on the 24th, and then back to the kids with Disney On Ice at the Barclay Card Arena from 21 October – 1 November and a ghoulish gathering of pumpkin carving at Beckett’s Farm (they are both for me really!). I’d recommend doing something different for Bonfire Night this year with Silent Fireworks (yes you heard it right) at the Botanical Gardens, and then I’ll be popping in on Pip with the Crescent Theatre’s performance of Great Expectations from 31 October. LoveBrum’s Hidden Spaces event on 18 November shouldn’t be missed (you get to explore the tunnels under the Mailbox to Grand Central), and Free Radio Live at the Genting Arena on the 28th is always a cracking gig. Maybe some Funny Business with Jimmy Carr at our beautiful Symphony Hall on the 6th should also be added to the diary. Oh, and whether you love it or loathe it, the Christmas Market opens in November. Enjoy, people. Served on the fourth floor of Selfridges overlooking the Bullring below, The Balcony’s afternoon tea forgoes the traditional tea stand in favour of picnic benches. THE EDGBASTON, HIGHFIELD STREET Served on vintage crockery, afternoon tea at The Edgbaston features a selection of dainty finger sandwiches, including Scottish smoked salmon, honey and whisky glazed ham, and organic egg and cress and a variety of sweet treats. What makes The Edgbaston special, is the variety of Organic Loose Leaf Jing Tea on offer – our favourites are lemon verbena, Green Dragon Well and Jasmine Silver Needle. If this isn’t enough for your taste buds, you can choose from one of the refreshing ice teas or upgrade to a glass of champagne or one of three different tea-based gin cocktails. Theedgbaston.co.uk
JEKYLL & HYDE, STEELHOUSE LANE For a quirky take, try Mr Hyde’s Afternoon Tea in the Jekyll & Hyde’s Victorian Gin Parlour with its decadent furnishings transporting you back to a bygone era. The fruit scones are served with berry jam along with chicken and stuffing, brie and cranberry, and cucumber and juniper berry dust sandwiches. There’s also sausage rolls, mini puff pastry wellingtons and not your traditional selection of sweets but marbled sponge cake, cup cakes, tea cakes and biscuits. Thejekyllandhyde.co.uk
HOTEL LA TOUR, ALBERT STREET For an alternative to the traditional afternoon tea, try Hotel La Tour’s Gentleman’s Afternoon Tea. Served in the Alvar Bar, relax in one of the cosy armchairs or sofas as you forgo the traditional smoked salmon for New York Deli Sandwiches, pork pies and sausages rolls. If that wasn’t enough, there’s cheese and bacon scones, hot mini doughnuts with chocolate dipping sauce and a range of beers, cider or ale. Hotel-latour.co.uk
HYATT REGENCY, BRIDGE STREET The beautifully light and airy Aria Restaurant at the Hyatt Regency offers a tranquil setting for afternoon tea - with its large glass roof and marbled interior, it’s the perfect place to escape the city for a couple of hours. The sandwiches are served open alongside warm raisin and plan scones with strawberry jam and Cornish clotted cream, whilst the sweets pay homage to Birmingham with a Cadbury’s chocolate bombe oozing with salted caramel and a Bird’s custard mousse. Brontë Aurell’s scandi favourite will brighten up the whole lunch table. Fresh and light, it works well both warm and cold and is a healthier option to your traditional tart
SERVES 6–7
INGREDIENTS: 3–4 fresh beetroot, approx. 300 g raw weight; alternatively, you can use 1 x 250 g pack of readycooked beetroot 200 ml crème fraîche 100 ml milk 2 eggs 200 g feta cheese, crumbled salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 tablespoon fresh dill 1 fennel bulb olive oil balsamic vinegar 50 g walnuts, lightly crushed
PASTRY: 150 g butter 150 g plain flour 100 g wholegrain rye flour pinch of salt 1 egg yolk 4 tablespoons cold water fluted, loose-based round pie tin, approx. 28 cm diameter
1. If using fresh beetroot, put them in a large saucepan of water and bring to the boil. Cook for 30–40 minutes (depending on the size of the beetroot) until soft. Rinse in cold water. The peel will come off easily when you rub them with your fingers. Set aside. 2. To make the pastry, cube the butter and crumble it with the flours and salt. This is quickly done in a food processor. Add the egg yolk and water and quickly, without working the dough too much, shape into a ball. Leave to chill in the fridge or freezer for 30 minutes before using.Roll out the dough and carefully place into the fluted loose-based pie tin. Prick the bottom of the case with a fork in several places. Leave to rest for another 15 minutes in the fridge or freezer. 3. Preheat the oven to 180°C Gas 4. Pre-bake the crust in the middle of the preheated oven for around 10 minutes. Meanwhile, mix the crème fraîche, milk, eggs, crumbled feta, salt, pepper and half the dill in a bowl. 4. Cut the fennel lengthways and remove the bottom core. Thinly slice the fennel. In a saucepan, add a little oil and sauté the fennel on a low heat for 5–6 minutes.

Beetroot Tart with Fennel and Dill
After a few minutes, add a few teaspoons of balsamic vinegar. 5. Remove the crust from the oven. Scatter the sautéed fennel across the base and add one-third of the crème fraîche mixture. Thinly slice the beetroot and arrange the thin slices all across the tart in neat layers. Add the remaining crème fraîche dressing on top and scatter with half of the crushed walnuts. 6. Return to the middle of the oven for around 20–25 minutes. When done, scatter the remaining dill and walnuts on top. Serve warm.

ivaanta, meaning to ‘live well gracefully’ boasts a plush interior with a traditional twist – white leather and dark wood meet exotic deep red and orange hues. We are greeted by our waiter and shown to a window table overlooking the moonlit canal. It seems Vivaanta have chosen the perfect location to catch the romantic meal crowd and the service is prompt and friendly. There are two menus, an A La Carte and Seafood menu, both with enough options to allow variety without confusion. Having never been a fan of seafood, I was keen to see if Owner and Executive Chef, Shah Alam would convert me. Our host for the evening attentively returned to take our order and suggest dishes from the menu with accompanying wines and cocktails. To start, my dining partner and I ordered the Jeera Chicken and Shola Kashmiri Grill (lamb chops) accompanied by a rather moreish raspberry daiquiri. The food was presented flawlessly, similar to Michelin-star restaurants in the city and tasted equally as good. The chicken is marinated overnight and melted in the mouth; providing the first hit of the famous spice that Vivaanta hold so close to their ethos. The Tandoori grilled lamb was tender and flavourful, marinated in yoghurt with garlic, ginger and herbs with hints of turmeric and chilli made for a perfect light starter.
For the main course, we opted for a mixture of traditional lamb and a seafood dish. The Kaalia Gosht, a south Indian presentation of spicy lamb with fresh ginger and reduced in a plum tomato stock, was full of balanced deep flavours and tender meat. It was perfectly accompanied by garlic basmati rice and a freshly baked roasted chilli naan, which we shared. The mild but fragrant Goan Style Fish Curry with a whole Monkfish tail, aubergine and basil provided the perfect introduction to spiced seafood, which Vivaanta execute perfectly. As recommended by our waiter, the Reserva Brut special edition, Torreló, a sparkling wine priced at a reasonable £32, accompanied our mains. The bright citrus hints and subtle apple and pear flavours acted as a perfect palate cleanser and partner to both of the dishes we ordered. After our meal, Owner and Executive Chef, Shah Alam was the first to come and greet us, asking if we were happy with the experience and what he could do to improve. The personal service is what gives Vivaanta an edge on rival fine dining restaurants in the city. You feel instantly welcome and looked after throughout. The food at Vivaanta is by far some of the finest Indian cuisine I have tasted in the city, and produced with high quality ingredients at a very reasonable price. Winter 2015 | Style Birmingham | 85

Why we should LoveBrum
Andrew Riley speaks to Tim Andrews, Managing Director of Hollywood Monster and Trustee and Chairman of LoveBrum, about the city, is latest project and his boat Tin Drum accompanied by LoveBrum ambassadors. I
’ve lived in the region for I LoveBrum because… over 40 years and worked “We’re really singing from the rooftops about in Brum for over 20. I have the amazing work that so many are doing to built my business here and, support our wider community, giving them over time, I’ve seen many an additional voice that they don’t necessarily have to promote this fantastic work.” friends drawn to pastures new but I’ve remained loyal. Matt Holden-Jones DipFA, Managing Presenting to media agencies Director, H-J Wealth Planning Ltd in London comes with the territory and every time I do it, I feel like I’m selling myself and where I’m from, even before I get to the actual product I’m there to present. This ‘London superiority complex’ is something that I’m more than familiar with so I had this idea… As a city we’re getting better at shouting about how great we are – we’re all over the national headlines, upsetting Londoners and Mancunians alike – but we’re not that good at pushing the people behind the city. Our high achievers who make Birmingham what it is. Things are changing and there’s a really good feeling around Birmingham right now; Resorts World Birmingham, Grand Central and the Mailbox all adding to the exciting city mix, so there seems no better time than to highlight someone who’s making waves across the city and beyond. Back to my idea; I thought to myself why not get some great people together who have passion for the city and promote it in everything they do? So I spoke to Tim Andrews, a well-known figure, aboard his boat Tin Drum, about his business, the city and his latest project. Winter 2015 | Style Birmingham | 87

at the people who constantly knock it and the lack of civic pride that exists. I think the pride is there but it just needs to be brought out, and that’s what LoveBrum’s all about. Do you think we suffer from professional brain drain? There is an element of that, but on the flip side we are encouraging a lot of people to come into the city through our universities and research is showing that people who study here are actually staying here. Yes, there is a problem but I think people are realising that Birmingham offers an amazing standard of living and quality of life versus the likes of London where things are so much more expensive. Birmingham has everything you need, apart from a beach! Do you think people’s perception of Birmingham has changed? The recession hit Birmingham really hard but we’ve come out of it with a huge bounce and there are a lot of organisations promoting Birmingham right now as well as LoveBrum. We need to remind people what’s great about Birmingham. There’s still a perception problem but I think it’s more of an age thing. In a couple of generations I think perception problems will be a complete thing of the past for Birmingham.
Life / Spotlight I LoveBrum because… “I am a massive ambassador for Birmingham, it has so much to offer the young professional – affordable property, thriving businesses, great shops, restaurants, sporting institutions! I’m very excited for what the future holds for our city.” Lizy Burrows, Marketing Manager, Aston Villa Football Club
So, what’s the vision for LoveBrum and how will it change perceptions? First and foremost we’re a charity and collective of people; any Brummie or advocate of Birmingham can get on board to help for a better Birmingham, by promoting and celebrating the people, businesses, charities and projects projects that are going on here in our city and celebrate it. Like any big city it is hurting in places, suffering from homelessness, poor education and dilapidated districts, child poverty and social issues. In its first six months, LoveBrum has donated £17,000 to five very worthy causes: Lily Mae Foundation, Sampson Road Residents’ Association, Homelands Festival, Ups and Downs, and Serve Our Brummies. All very worthy but very different projects happening in the communities around us; from training councillors for bereaved parents to serving up food for the city’s homeless. Any project that we do support has to have a tangible outcome and has to be making the city a better place to live or work. 100% of money donated goes to our selected charities and the cost of running the charity is met through business sponsorship. Our objectives are promoting the city and meeting people through business networking… it’s all about re-engaging people with their community and each other. How do you think it’s going? We’ve now got a team in place with an office, both sponsored, and we have around 1,000 people signed up as members. Added to that, we have a number of corporate I LoveBrum because… “The potential that has long surrounded our great city is fast becoming a reality with serious offerings in the retail, leisure and business space.” Kathryn Small, Business Development Manager, Irwin Mitchell LLP
sponsors on board, including eZe-Talk, Prologis, Irwin Mitchell, FleetMilne, H-J Wealth Planning, and Thompson & Co. This comes in addition to a number of Service Patrons who provide their expertise to support the charity, which include AllinAll Events, Bareface Media, EAST VILLAGE., Hollywood Monster, ORB, Packt Publishing, and PSP. Where would you like the city to be 10 years from now? In terms of the charity LoveBrum it has to be sustainable and we’re going to achieve this by guaranteeing people know that the money stays in Birmingham and benefits Birmingham causes. More than that, people can choose where the money is spent via our online voting system, which is controlled by our members. The original concept for LoveBrum came from ‘I Love NYC’, which was initially set up to improve the perceptions of New York and turned out to be an instrumental part of changing not just America but the whole world’s perception. I want LoveBrum to be an organisation everyone wants to be part of, giving people pride in our city. How does the boat fit into this? I’ve had the boat for a few years, and use it for corporate days throughout the summer. Having it also means that I can donate it to charity auctions and help raise money for worthy causes. Last summer, for example, we hosted over 100 guests and raised around £30,000 for charity. By donating the boat to the Balsall Common, Dorridge and Knowle Fun Runs, additional charities supported
include Northleigh House, Vision Care, Muscular Dystrophy, Reachout Network Ministries, Solihull Children’s Special Needs Association, Girl Guiding and many more. I love being able to do this. You have a keen interest in charity, where does that come from? It’s in line with my passion for the city and my and my childhood raising money for cancer charities after losing my nan so young from the terrible disease. Hollywood Monster, as a business, supports a wealth of charities, giving around £75,000 to local charities each year, via in-kind and cash donations. We also support local sporting talent; sponsoring Olympic cycling hopeful Lucy Shaw, Birmingham City Ladies, BPS Birmingham and Fleet Milne netball teams, on top of supporting various local youngster football teams. I like to get involved personally and as well as being Trustee and Chairman for LoveBrum, I was also part of the team that launched the 7inSeven cycle initiative in 2013, which saw 25 riders take part in a gruelling 700-mile challenge, spanning seven countries in seven days. This also led to the seven coasts in seven days challenge last year, which saw a number of the same (and new) riders cycling over 800 miles in seven days. So far the initiative has raised £185,000 for local charities. In February, I completed my World Major Series marathon dream, after running the Tokyo Marathon and raising over £5,000 for LoveBrum. I now have seven marathon medals proudly hanging up in the office after running in Chicago, New York, Berlin, Boston, London, and now Tokyo. I LoveBrum because… “Birmingham has been transformed in recent times with the wonderful Grand Central and the library as two examples of a rejuvenated city. The city is not only known for its manufacturing base and financial prowess but is increasingly seen as a destination for foreign investment – a testament to its thriving cultural offering.” Ninder Johal, President, the Black Country Chamber of Commerce, Board member, the Black Country LEP

Super September
Life / City
Words: Tara Tomes
Unless you hid away in a cave for 30 days, I assume that you were part of ‘Super September’, and I hope you agree that it finally felt like the city was making the big gesture needed to propel its reputation. The unveiling of Grand Central, including the brand new John Lewis; an arts-filled Birmingham Weekender; Rugby World Cup 2015 games at Villa Park – it all helped us to create 30 days of fun. We’ve been all over the national news but, more importantly, Brummies have been proud of the city.
Before we all get post-September blues, Birmingham isn’t just great for one 30-day period… it’s actually something we should be proud of 365 days of the year. And here’s why Harvey Nichols at the Mailbox

Life Made Beautiful at the Mailbox
With the newly transformed Mailbox now open and a new creative concept to celebrate, we talk to the creators about the campaign and what the revamp means to the city Richard Payne, Creative Director at Cogent Elliott and creator of Life Made Beautiful at the new Mailbox ‘Birmingham has undergone something of a renaissance over the past few years, transforming itself into a truly cosmopolitan and vibrant city. Whether it’s Europe’s largest, and arguably coolest library or the recently reborn New Street station. The city exudes excitement. Sitting at the heart of these developments is the new Mailbox. Now, I like an ambitious plan as much as the next man, but when the investors behind the Mailbox showed us their plans I had to ask; could they pull this off ? The answer? A resounding yes. From its glass roofed Urban Room, home to some of retail’s top brands, through to the innovative Everyman Cinema, every note is pitch perfect. So, how do you market such a captivating experience? We came up with several concepts but one particularly resonated with the Mailbox – a very simple 92 | Style Birmingham | Winter 2015
mantra: Life Made Beautiful. The idea behind Life Made Beautiful was born out of the fact that, whatever you do within the Mailbox, it will be a superior experience and will enhance your life in some way. Whether you’re dining at one of their
restaurants, going to see a film at the plush Everyman cinema or going for a facial at the MediSpa in Harvey Nichols after a long day of shopping, it’s all about an enhanced style and ultimately, a life made beautiful. The
building, and the environment that visitors will experience, has been literally transformed. The Mailbox itself is made beautiful like never before. Alongside the line, the images we’ve produced take inspiration from the world of dance and stage. In a sense, the theatre itself is a heightened interpretation of reality, with dance expressing movement in the most beautiful way possible. It fits perfectly with the idea that the new Mailbox will deliver an experience that’s second to none. Harvey Nichols was a wonderful location for the fashion film as it felt like a stage in its own right and the swooping staircase seemed like the perfect centerpiece for the film. In the end, the only way is to judge for yourself and pay a visit. We were really excited about doing this project and there’s no doubt in my mind that the new Mailbox gives this vibrant city the luxury shopping experience it deserves.’

5 MINUTES WITH… Life Made Beautiful dance choreographer, Rosie Kay ‘It was a really great concept and I got the tone of it straight away. We decided on two kinds of scenes that had very different atmospheres; one was the tango which had a sexy and dramatic vibe and the other was the classical ballet which had an almost magical feel and went perfectly with the tagline.
WIN! Time to get your dancing shoes on! You and a friend could win a ballet lesson with Life Made Beautiful dance choreographer Rosie Kay on Saturday 12 December at the DanceXchange studio in Birmingham. To enter and for your chance to win, simply answer the following question:
The idea behind the fashion film was that if you caught someones eye in normal life, it would just be a glance and you’d move on. In our film, the dancers see each other and have this moment of beautiful dance . It’s that idea that suddenly in that moment, life becomes something extraordinary and beautiful like a dance.’
