e’ve gone to town this issue to deliver an incredible gift guide, plus lots of party dressing tips and beauty and hair inspiration to get you looking fabulous ahead of the festivities. Look for our brilliant (and not to mention very funny) interview with our favourite radio redhead, Alice Levine. She gives us the lowdown on what it’s really like at Radio 1, being a world-class worrier and Christmas in the Levine household, (we’ll give you a clue, it includes copious amounts of food!). We’re sick of people putting down not just Birmingham, but the whole Midlands when it comes to fashion and creativity, which is why we love Midlands Fashion Awards. This year MFA once again proved that the region is a hotbed of design talent. Check out page 39 to meet the winners as we talk the future. She’s one of the most in-demand presenters around but Radio 1 DJ Alice Levine likes to keep it real when it comes to fashion, celebrities and Christmas playlists. Style Birmingham chats to the talented (and very funny) radio redhead
I
f asked to name our favourite Radio 1 DJ, then Alice Levine would definitely be up there. She’s funny, talented, stylish, can cook (she runs her own supper clubs with fellow presenter Laura Jackson) and works a vintage look like no other. Heck, she even got Michael Fassbender to rap live Warren G’s ‘Regulate’ live on air! The weekend radio presenter has also hosted Big Brother on the Side, the Hot Desk and backstage at the Brit Awards, and will be presenting at this year’s new-look Clothes Show. So who better to give us the low-down on fashion tips, behind the scenes of Radio 1 and how to plan the perfect Christmas (clue: lots of food and a Kylie album).
WHY VINTAGE FASHION ROCKS
I’m just wondering how it’s going to work; do I get to meet the celebrities, do we hang out and chill, how does it work? Am I going to meet all these people in the canteen when I’m making a cup of tea?! I don’t have a hit list because that would be a bit weird, but we could play Clothes Show celebrity bingo so I’ll see how many I can get.
HER DREAM JOB
Radio 1 is definitely a dream job. I say it’s dream job stuff, but I didn’t actually know when I was younger that your job could be a radio or TV presenter. You know when you’re young and you don’t really register that that’s a thing? I wasn’t six and dreaming of it because I couldn’t really conceptualise that that’s how I could make my living. At University I got really into student television-making and I started my career off in TV. Then the Radio 1 call came in and they said that they wanted to hear me and see what I was all about, and that was it. It’s great working at Radio 1 because it’s actually really fun like you’d expect. It’s a bit of a family over the weekend because you are on at a weird time when people are hanging out so you’re each other’s gang, which is really nice.

‘I’ve always enjoyed the hunt and seeking out something that’s different and that nobody else has, so I really like vintage for that reason. I love going to charity shops and flea markets because I always feel like there’s a gem to be found. I suppose I love vintage because I used to raid my mum’s wardrobe as a child and she always had amazing costume jewellery, incredible leather belts and some great sixties prints. For a long time I wasn’t quite sure what I was into and then I found the sixties’ aesthetic really pleasing and I hooked onto that. I suppose it happened when I was about sixteen when I started to get really into it and my friends were too, so I found my little clan.
BAGGING A BARGAIN
PRESENTING AT CLOTHES SHOW 2015
My £2.50 Burberry mac is amazing. I found it at a jumble sale and I actually got sweaty palms from the sheer excitement of it. I don’t think I’ll ever top that; it’s definitely the best bargain I’ll ever find, it’s literally the best bargain anyone will ever find! There was a part of me that thought maybe I should just keep it pristine and really look after it and only wear it on days where I think not a drop of rain will fall, but I’m not really one for saving things for best.
COPING WITH PRE-SHOW NERVES
Oh my god I feel nervous on every show! In a way it’s good because people always say you channel it, so it’s good to have those sort of vibes. The only thing that has to be really tight and precise is when you have to go into the news. I always joke that my legs go cold when I have to do it because I’m concentrating so much I panic that I’m going to miss it! And that still happens now even though I’ve been doing it for three years, I don’t know if that will ever go. Christmas 2015 | Style Birmingham | 25

EMBARRASSING ON AIR MOMENTS
I’m mostly either really good with names or sometimes there’s just a complete block in my brain and I can’t get my head around it. I met One Direction and I called Louie Liam, so that wasn’t ideal. I called Daft Punk’s album ‘Random Access Mammaries’ instead of ‘Memories’. I get myself quite tangled with words. I’m also really bad with innuendos, not intentionally so, but I do drop them all the time and it’s usually Scott Mills who calls me out on that.
FAVOURITE CELEBRITY INTERVIEW
It’s a toss-up between Jake Gyllenhaal and Elijah Wood because they were such good fun. Jake was great and, how do I put this to sound professional; he’s not hard on the eye! I could actually imagine going to the pub with Elijah and hanging out for the evening and it being really fun.
RADIO 1 PALS
My producer Kate and I are like two peas in a pod, she’s brilliant. And I think people forget that that person is there because she doesn’t speak on air, but I’d feel really lost without her. The show is so fun because she’s there. Scott Mills and I have a really similar sense of humour and we always have a good giggle. We’ve been trying to arrange to go for dinner since I started at Radio 1, so for about three and a half years. One day it will happen.
NICK GRIMSHAW JOINING THE X-FACTOR
With Nick, I feel like he’s the same person on air, as he is on the X-Factor. I don’t think he really has an act. That’s what’s so great about him, he is so natural and brilliant with the one-liners so that makes him perfect for the X-Factor. But no, I don’t think it has all gone to his head. I think he was pretty starry before to be honest, he’s still a glamour puss! I can’t say that I do watch him every week, that sounds really terrible but I’m sure the millions of people who watch it make up for that. It’s too much commitment, I can’t do that every week!
THE RADIO 1 CHRISTMAS PARTY
On the same day as the Christmas party we have our photos taken for the year to go on a ‘big class of 2015’. It’s exactly like school photo day, we all stand in a queue and pass the comb round to brush our hair and wear our best clothes that our mum has picked out for us and then we have a really awkward picture taken. So that’s how the party starts and then we all get sloshed. We have a proper office party like everyone else, like beers in the bucket kind of thing. If you’re lucky you get chilled white wine, probably not though, warm white wine! I’m probably not going to get invited this year now! It’s funny because everyone is in the same room at the same time and it’s so hard to make that happen. Every DJ is there so it’s really good fun.
THE PERFECT PARTY PLAYLIST
I’d really love to say that I will play some really cool remixes but I just got sent the Kylie Christmas album so I’m thinking I’m just going to go cheesy this year. I’ve been asked to DJ for a party and I’m just going to stick on all of the classics, like “Santa Baby”. It’s what the people want! They don’t want some too cool for school DJ. I’m going to go all out cheese!
A LEVINE FAMILY CHRISTMAS
Christmas at my house is myself, my brother, my dad and my mum and then some family friends come over. It’s all about food, like everyone else’s but we really have obscene amounts. We have three fridges full of food. My mum was a caterer so we have our family kitchen and then a separate kitchen where she used to work in. I love cooking but my mum is the ‘pro’ over Christmas, the kitchen is out of bounds. She’s quite a control freak I’m not going to lie, (I’m sure she’ll love to read that) but she’ll occasionally let me peel a carrot. Alice Levine presents The Weekend Show on Radio 1. he biggest issue with going straight f rom the office to your Christmas party is the lack of time you are likely to have to glam up, or space in which to do it. If you’re lucky enough to have both then congratulations, you can take a complete outfit change with you. If you don’t however, then read on.
START SIMPLE
If you’re going straight from the office, you need something that is easy to glam up but is just about suitable for the office. The simple solution is your go-to dress: your LBD. If black’s not your colour, try red or a vibrant blue, but make sure it is elegant, simple and fits you perfectly. Choose a style that works best with your figure. For the office team it with a simple jacket or cardigan and court shoes, and for the evening, glam it up with rule number two…

Never underestimate the power of accessories to update, glam up and even overdo your outfit. Stay on trend and fabulous this Christmas by going large – and I mean more than just your glass of wine! The catwalks for winter 2015-2016 were awash with oversized jewels and jewellery styles, particularly necklaces, and what better way to make a statement than with a big, bold
and beautiful neck piece to frame your dress. The great thing with this is it also draws the attention upwards towards your face and away from any parts of you that you would prefer not to focus on. To add the final touches, add a simple pair of glittery, jewelled or coloured heels and team with a matching evening bag.

What does ‘groom smart’ mean? Quite simply, be smart with your time when it comes to grooming. HAIR: If you aren’t confident in your own skills when it comes to getting your hair party ready, then lucky for you Birmingham is home to numerous blow dry bars that promise you glam hair in half an hour. The latest to open in Birmingham is Hershesons Blow-Dry Bar in Harvey Nichols. At £28 it’s probably one of the most affordable things in the store and you can choose from 12 beautiful styles to waltz back out again with. MAKE-UP: I’m a firm believer in a slick of red lipstick and a sweep of black eyeliner on the top of your lashes, but if that doesn’t come easy to you, then why not nip over to your nearest good beauty counter. Ask for a demonstration of a good party look (or whatever look you want to go for) and you should be set for the evening in no time.

This is something that can be done a day or two before – many salons stay open fairly late. If you’re in the Bullring, then Debenhams and Selfridges both have nail bars, otherwise head to House of Fraser, Mint Nail Salon or, if you don’t mind treating yourself to a glass of fizz at the same time, head to the Champagne Nail Bar at The Club and Spa at The Cube. We love the rock star glitter gel manicure – if you haven’t already adorned yourself with enough sparkle! Finally, remember that whatever you go for following the above rules, make sure you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing. Then, just walk confidently, hold your head high, smile, laugh, relax and most importantly – enjoy yourself.

I’m planning which direction to take my label and I’m hoping to launch it next year. I’m setting up a studio in Nottingham and I’ve already had a few people contact me to ask if I’m selling the pink dress, which they saw at MFA and in the Derby Telegraph. I want people to look at my garments and think that they’d want to wear them or that they’d feel amazing wearing them. For me that’s the biggest compliment. I feel like there’s a lot missing from the high-street. The styles look so similar and it’s really hard to find anything that looks different or has any unique detailing. You could get any white shirt on the high-street, but if you add an interesting fastening or beautiful cuff detail, people wouldn’t mind paying a little more. For me, it’s the attention to detail and quality fabric that make an item special and unique.

“I didn’t always know I wanted to do fashion design, I worked my way into it. At University I did a year on placement and worked for Caliba clothing who are a high-street supplier to retailers like House of Fraser and River Island. I then went onto Jonathan Saunders and Felder Felder. My collection was inspired by the evolution of glamour, feminism and asymmetry.
It’s considered that if you want to work in fashion, you need to be in London but that’s not the case and there are other opportunities you just need to look for them. I was so surprised to be nominated for the award because so many people entered and I knew a lot of people on my University course applied for it. “The design gene runs in my family. I had always done art at school and my older sister studied Fashion Design at Nottingham University. My mum was also a designer and had a shop in Birmingham and so did my grandmother and great grandmother so it’s safe to say it’s in the family! My collection took inspiration from sculpture and car engines. I created a narrative of this half machine, half woman, which is what I based the whole collection on. I used a mixture of digital prints, which were layered on top of each other, and I used clean lines and a black, white, grey and silver colour palette. I had wanted to create this collection since my first year at University, but we were always given a brief so third year was the year we got to do whatever we wanted. I’ve just set up my own dress company, Fourth Generation because I’m the fourth generation of dressmakers. It focuses on

evening and party dresses and they are all bespoke and made to measure. I’ve just produced a range that is now online. You just pick your dress, choose a fabric then send your measurements and it’s a week’s turn around. You can pick the length, choose whether you want short sleeves or no sleeves and it’s a chance for you to be the designer. They are also reasonably priced at around £50. I’ve got a new range coming out in February and a new website launching then too. Since MFA, I contacted lots of magazines and radio stations and I’ve had such a great response from people. I think without being able to say I was part of MFA, they may have not given me a chance or considered me. I’ve already had two radio interviews from local BBC stations and a magazine interview. Women / Spotlight “I was really into vintage and burlesque and naturally, hats and headpieces are a big part of that. I had always wanted to finish off my outfits and had this image in my mind but I could never find what I was looking for. I’ve always had an interest in arts and craft so I thought I must be able to make them myself. I did a one day hat making workshop with Ellie Braithwaite in Digbeth and I was hooked from the get go. I bought lots of supplies and within the first few weeks, I’d made far more than I could ever wear myself so I started listening them on etsy.com. I had great feedback and it became quite addictive. My pieces are oneof-a-kind. I specialise in a bespoke service so the client will tell me what sort of materials they’d like, whether they want feathers, or some veiling or a particular colour and we’ll work together to create a very unique piece just for them. I also have my own website, Spirit of Harlequin. To think people will take the time to send me a photograph of themselves wearing their outfit to say how happy they are with it and how fabulous they felt in the head piece really means everything to me. MFA has been such a confidence boost and it also helps my customers to trust in what I do and love being able to say ‘Award-Winning’. It felt wonderful to be nominated for the award. I was with my husband and stepmother and we were all crying. I’d had really good feedback from customers but to have it from an industry based competition was amazing, and to win it was incredible. Since MFA I’m now in a shop in Solihull called Naissance De. It’s lovely to have a high-street presence and I’d love to build on local contacts and work with the Birmingham people. I’ve also been on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2, which was very surreal!”

BEST INDEPENDENT DESIGNER OF THE YEAR MAURICE WHITTINGHAM “I’ve always been a designer and always loved to create things. My mum was a dressmaker and used to make our clothes as children which made me feel like I had something individual and personal. At school I started off by doing alterations for my friends and it just progressed. 12-years-ago things became more serious and I was commissioned by ‘Genes for Jeans’ to decorate the bull. Then I fell out of love with it, but two years ago I decided that this is what I want to do. I was just going to start off with a range of menswear coats and then, you make a coat and think, ‘oh maybe I want a pair of trousers to go with that and then a shirt’, and it’s just developed. This year has been fantastic. I was recently offered to showcase at New York and London Fashion Week and then winning the award at MFA was a really great achievement and it was lovely for my family to see my designs on the catwalk. I think menswear could do with a lot more options. I think men’s tailoring can be a little boring. I can understand because men don’t like to experiment to a certain point but there are a lot of the same cuts and patterns, I just want to put a twist on it. Many of my trousers come with a skirt attached, which I feel is quite masculine. If you go back in history, the gladiators, the Romans and the Scottish wore them and it was seen as fierce. But a lot of men are a little too scared to wear them so the skirts are detachable and you can wear them as normal trousers. MFA makes people aware of you in the industry. You can be working at something for years but if you only show your friends and family, then nobody really knows about you. But if you want it as a business, the awards give you a great sense of achievement and make you feel like you are going in the right direction.”

Meet Fashion’s Newest Brit Pack Leader Words: Laura Smith
With celebrity fans including Rihanna, Cara Delevingne and Georgia May Jagger, fashion designer Ashley Williams talks collections, Birmingham and teenage inspiration

escribed by the doyenne of fashion journalism Hilary in 2012 - where celebrity friends Alice Dellal (who was the face of Alexander as one of this season’s “must- see designers”, Chanel at the time) and Pixie Geldof modelled the collection. After we were very excited to meet fashion designer Ashley this, she debuted with Fashion East in 2013 (whose alumni include Williams. Famed for innovative collections featuring Coco-Cola, Jonathan Saunders and J.W. Anderson) and 80s graphics and Minnie Mouse, Ashley was in Birmingham as part won the British Fashion Council’s New Gen of Selfridge’s ‘Live and Loud’ festival this October. Q: Talk us through the inspiration behind the collection? A: ‘We really wanted to showcase our personal style but mix it up with a holiday twist. A: Our mom is the expert decorator, so it’s a lot of fun getting really excited once she starts to whip out all of the decorations. She really gets into it. With a client list that reads something like the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Azzi Glasser is a perfumer with a difference. Rose Gallagher meets the fragrance designer to talk the art of scent
M
y favourite perfume is Illamasqua’s Freak. I love it because it reminds me of when I first started working for them; a really cold winter and a very happy time. Whenever we talked about it in the office (we all loved it, male and female, old and young) the same name came up again and again – Azzi. Azzi Glasser, a legend of perfumery, was the lady behind my favourite scent. I didn’t know much about her, but from what I could gather she was somehow involved with all of the most powerful launches you could think of and was the lady to know when it came to fragrance. Everything she put her name to had a slightly different story; she was linked to bespoke fragrances for clients like Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, and signature scents for brands like Jack Wills and Agent Provocateur. I reached out to her a little while ago to see if she might answer a few questions for me over e-mail, partly because I thought it would
make a lovely story and partly to satisfy my own curiosity. What returned was an invitation to her home, to see the space that she works from, so that I could truly get a sense of her craft. Shortly thereafter ensued a journey into the Narnia of fragrance and the most sensory room I have ever experienced. I can’t quite describe it, but there was simply a positive aura around Azzi’s impossibly tall house. When her assistant walked me through her living space I was hit instantly by a heady, warm candle, and she lead me into what can only be described as an Aladdin’s cave of fragrances. There, in a Bella Freud sweatshirt, leather skirt and Converse, sat Azzi. Azzi had a real impact on me because I perceived her as both sensible and whimsical all at once. On one hand she was sensibly taken by the power of hard work, believing that with time and effort anything could be achieved. At the same time she was innately positive, and I felt as though this perhaps had just as Christmas 2015 | Style Birmingham | 53

much power when it came to her realising her goals. There was something very raw about her take on life – I didn’t once feel as though she censored herself as we spoke. As I asked her tales about her journey I found it fascinating that she focused more on her thoughts and feelings at any given time than the professional steps themselves; she fed herself on instinct. “I fell into being a perfumer. I didn’t even know the word,” she told me when I asked how it all began. She didn’t go to uni, insisting that she was too impatient for it. “School was good for discipline; not for subjects,” she explained. “You determine your success depending on what you bring. I’ve always believed that the world is what you make of it.” Azzi was consistent in telling me how she viewed the world and in reminding me that anything was possible. After taking her first fragrance innovation to Boots at 19, she embarked upon a journey with CPL Aromas who soon contacted her after hearing of her work. She found herself “shocked and disappointed” when she worked behind the doors of fine fragrance. “It was all marketing-led. Why wasn’t it more
creatively-led?” she wondered. “To me it wasn’t about how you saw the industry, it was about how you saw the world.” Two friends that saw the world as she did were Joe Corre and Serena Rees, then founders of Agent Provocateur. “You have to lead, and they were leaders,” she said of them. On holiday they discussed the possibility of collaborating on the first AP fragrance, and little did they know their vision would translate into one of the most iconic fragrances. As we talked, my eyes were drawn to all of the nooks and crannies of this little room. Shelves upon shelves were lined with fragrance bottles and candles, tall and short, bright and dark, from every brand and name you could imagine. Alongside these trinkets I noticed stacks of small, labelled boxes. Names of bespoke fragrance clients – the likes of Orlando Bloom, Jude Law – were present, and thus began a discussion about Azzi’s bespoke fragrances. “It normally hits me straight away,” she said when I asked how she knew where to begin with a bespoke fragrance. She will spend some time with the person, “almost like a therapy session,” she quips, and she goes a lot on energy and instinct.

Recently I returned to Azzi’s fragrance cave to hear everything about an exciting update in her portfolio. This October, she released her most anticipated collection – her very own edit called The Perfumer’s Story. The collection of 11 limited edition fragrances from her back catalogue is now at Harvey Nichols, being retailed for the very first time. Describing a fragrance can be so challenging. You can’t pinpoint it as a colour or a texture or tone like you can with other beauty products. But what if you described a fragrance with a story? Illustrating it instead by describing the person that would wear and love it? Turning the fragrance journey down a new path, Azzi has personally trained her own bespoke team of fragrance experts (sourced warmly through friends) for her spaces in Harvey Nichols. Her experts take an emotive approach to fragrance, helping you to choose a scent based on personality and likeness. I visited her last week to try every last one and get to know each of her 11 characters. To add to the story theme, each fragrance comes housed in a special book, complete with an Azzi embossed wax seal. I was so fascinated by Azzi’s scent stories. The smells came first, she explained, and then the idea of the character came with them. She doesn’t want these to mask you; she wishes them to complement you. In addition to her fragrance collection, perhaps the most exciting development of all is that Azzi is now offering her bespoke fragrance service at the Bespoke Atelier at Harvey Nichols, Knightsbridge. The process of creating these entirely unique fragrances is intrinsic and personal, Azzi tells me. She spends lots of time getting to know the client, capturing their personality, then handpicks ingredients from around the world to create an inimitable scent. It comes presented in a beautiful crystal bottle. All I know is that when I wear one of Azzi’s creations it gives me a real sense of power for that day. The mysterious Mr Timms and Mr Clark, founders of urban lifestyle brand P&Co now based in the Great Western Arcade, talk Birmingham influences, the new store and their love affair with coffee

How did P&Co begin? We met through music. We were both designers within bands in the Birmingham music scene and we met through that. Then through similar interests in photography and design we set up a digital agency and started designing for bands and small businesses. We mostly designed covers, merchandise and posters, but then created some T-shirts for bands and it got to a stage where they would sell-out immediately. Then at Christmas three years ago, we sat around the German Market and spoke about fashion in Birmingham and we felt there was just nothing around for the creative urban young guy. We agreed to put our skills together and create a label. We started off with a T-shirt and now we have a whole collection and sell around the world. It’s turned into a lifestyle brand; we sell cushions, candles and teacups and coffee.
Tell us more about your coffee… Our coffee does really well and we met over coffee and when we quit our jobs we both worked at coffee shops. Mr Timms did this Death Before Decaf design on a little note pad and I said it would look great on a cup. We put
it on a cup and we sold 250 cups in two hours and sold out straight away. Images of the design have been blogged thousands of times online. And we’ve just started to roast our own coffee now in Birmingham. Our brand is hugely based around coffee and the names of the jeans are named after the streets where we used to go for coffee. Our skinny jeans that are launching are called Temple Row, the slim jeans are Newhall and our super skinny’s are Vyse, after Vyse Street in the Jewellery Quarter. Do people realise that Birmingham is so inherently linked into the brand? If you’re from the city then you can recognise the Birmingham influences but for the people in the US and Canada, they just think it’s a cool name.Then they get the jeans and open the pocket and there’s a map with the street highlighted. All the graphics on our T-shirts are inspired by the typography on the old industrials buildings in the city. It’s also how we came up with the name P&Co. We wanted a really cool heritage name and P&Co was actually a Silversmiths in the Jewellery Quarter that folded 60-years-ago. Someone sent us a photo of their steel the year we had set up and their logo is spookily similar to ours. Who is your target market? We design for creative people like ourselves who want something a little urban and edgy looking. There’s a new label that’s just come out called YUCKY (young urban creative) and I guess that’s who are customers are. Christmas 2015 | Style Birmingham | 71

How would you each describe your own personal style? Mr Timms: I’m quite rustic and outdoorsy. I’m workwear inspired and I love denim worker jackets. Sometimes we’ll come out of our flat in the Jewellery Quarter and we’ll see all the Silversmiths in their long, bright blue worker coats and I’ll say ‘that jacket is wicked, can we make it!?’. It’s cool to be inspired by where you live.
Mr Clark: I wear quite clean and minimal clothes but I like to wear accessories like our leather goods to just balance it out. What I wear has to be quality; we tend to go for more expensive brands because they last much longer than what you would find on the high-street. How has the brand progressed since you started? We just started with an ampersand P&Co T-shirt and it did really well. Dan from Bastille wore it on tour and posted it online. We teamed up with Ricky Hall (a Wolverhampton model who pioneered the beard trend) when we first started and he was taking off in his career and that was the perfect collaboration. We do really well in America, 30% of sales are from the US in areas like New York, LA, Seattle and San Francisco, which are all the 72 | Style Birmingham | Christmas 2015
cool ‘hipster’ areas that you want to be in. An American model Jimmy Q has modelled for us and he just loves the brand and keeps asking our photographer if he can shoot for us. We are very open and honest with the models and go direct to them to ask whether they like the brand and if they’d like to be a part of the next collection. How often are you guys designing? When we first started, it was a collection a month because it was just T-shirts so you have to keep it fresh. Now we are going to be doing collections every season and we have some really exciting collaborations lined up for next year. What has the reaction been like from customers in Birmingham? The feedback has been really good. We’ve been online for a long time and we weren’t really doing anything in Birmingham so not many people knew we were here. Now that we are in the Great Western Arcade, quite a few of the local businesses are introducing themselves and saying how they’ve followed us online but didn’t know we were based in Birmingham. It’s just really good being able to say we’re here.We’ve never posted anything personal on the website and never released our names because we want the brand to speak for itself. It’s not about us promoting ourselves. Where would you like to take P&Co in the future? We would like to try a different take on the traditional retail store. In London you get some retail shops that have a coffee shop and cinema within the store. We’d like to have different types of lifestyle shops across the UK and then in America. Back in 2013, the dapper gent came to the foref ront of men’s fashion. Blokes who hadn’t even entertained the thought of growing a tash put down their razors, and by the time 5 o’clock shadow had appeared, they were online ordering beard oil and combs. It was the trend for the man who wanted to add a splash of colour via a pocket square or a flashy sock while proving that he was still a man’s man. Now, after a years of advertisers exhausting the moustache emblem, we’re finally noticing a slight shift towards a trend that is, shall we say, rather unexplored by the mainstream. One that won’t be so easy to adapt to, but one that is sure to give menswear the good kick up the arse it’s been waiting for. Androgyny. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term ‘androgyny’, the Oxford English Dictionary describes it as: ‘Partly male and partly female in appearance’. So, in terms of fashion this means that the garment and/or outfit has elements that are both masculine and feminine. In other words, it’s ambiguous clothing, open to more than one interpretation. The androgynous trend has had many peaks throughout history and popular culture, and with the current 70s trend we are seeing some of the old pioneers taking centre stage and becoming designers’ key influences, such as Mick Jagger, David Bowie and
Marc Bolan – some of the greatest gender benders out there. From a womenswear angle, they’ve been dipping into our wardrobes for decades – where else do you think they got jeggings from? Yes, it’s entirely our fault. However, we’re seeing a shift, a new age of metrosexual men who are coming into their own, unbound from stereotypes and experimenting with fashion. Now, by no means am I telling you to go rummaging through your girlfriend’s wardrobe and start pulling out her Friday night frock to wear at your local boozer; it’s time to get smart and examine how we can incorporate this trend into our attire for the better – without looking like a fool. For inspiration, I suggest you take a look Gucci’s A/W 15 show. With Alessandro Michele at the helm, Gucci went full throttle with the trend, reinventing masculine fabrics and shunning the normal sharp edge with softer silhouettes. And Hedi Slimane at Saint Laurent showed us a new take on the rock look with an Oscar Wilde flamboyance making the collection a huge hit – definitely worth a gander.

In terms of role models, David Gandy just isn’t going to cut it next year. Yes, we’ve looked up to him for a lot of things over the years but now it’s time to move on to a new kind of man; enter Willy Cartier. He’s a model that is most definitely worth a double tap on Instagram. He’s worked with some of the best brands out there including Diesel and Givenchy. He’s not afraid of blurring the boundaries. Just take a look at his latest shoot with Franck Glenisson – it’s new masculinity at its finest. So, now you finally know about the new trend and where to get some inspiration, here’s some of my top buys for this trend that you can find on the high street. I urge you to take a look and stop all this poncing around in three-piece suits pretending to look like David Gandy.

Leather gives a rock edge and big clunky boots will keep it masculine. On the other hand, if the full-length fur is out of the question, go for a coat with a fur trim to keep it on trend.

There is a chance to meet Santa himself, as well as browse an impressive array of collections, at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery from 5-20 December, although I can’t promise you’ll get any masterpieces in your stocking this year. And did you know that our very own Town Hall was the location chosen by Charles Dickens for the first ever public reading of A Christmas Carol? WATCH THESE CHRISTMAS CRACKERS Christmas is the perfect opportunity to gather with colleagues, friends and family, and why not use this as an excuse to check out some of the city’s stage and screen stars? My annual tradition is The Nutcracker at the Hippodrome, and it’s back from 27 November until 13 December. We have a couple of pantomimes to choose from too; not only is Aladdin at the Hippodrome from 19 December until 31 January, but the Barclaycard Arena will also host the world’s biggest pantomime when Cinderella visits from 20-24 December. If films are more your thing, you need to visit The Electric Cinema as they have an awesome programme lined up from 13 December. Watch the likes of It’s A Wonderful Life, Elf, Home Alone, and White Christmas; and celebrate the new Star Wars movie at their special Star Wars event on 17 December, complete with themed cocktails.
BRAVE THE GREAT OUTDOORS Even if the weather is frightful and your fire is delightful, sometimes it’s good to get some fresh air into your lungs and the German Market isn’t the only way to do it. If Christmas is getting too much, why not head out of the city centre and take a walk in some of our surrounding green spaces? The Lickey Hills and Clent Hills are a stone’s throw away, and there’s nothing more rewarding than a brisk stroll to the top and being greeted by the incredible panoramic views. Personally, I’d recommend a fluffy scarf, comfy boots, and a hot chocolate with a drop of your favourite tipple (mine’s Licor 43… try it!). Another thing I love to do at Christmas is visit the Black Country Living Museum. They have some great events on from 3-24 December, including traditional Christmas evenings and Carols by Candlelight. Don’t forget to wrap up warm and enjoy some fish and chips by the fire. Who knows, maybe we’ll even get some snow this year!

Comedy’s Answer to Beyoncé Feel-good comic Luisa Omielan isn’t afraid to get real about body shaming, mental health and masturbation. She became a global success with her debut show, ‘What would Beyoncé Do?’ and now she’s back at Glee Club with her latest empowering manifesto, ‘Am I Right Ladies?!’ and bringing her signature sass…

y dreams came true with my debut show ‘What Would Beyoncé Do?’ There was a lot of pressure to top it, more from the audience than anyone else because you want them to love it. 31 million people on Facebook have seen my thigh-gap joke, so quite a lot of people have seen me in my knickers. It’s a really funny part of the show and it’s always been something that people howl with laughter at. It all started when I used to host a show called Musical Bingo and one night I was wearing Spanx under my dress and I said to the audience: ‘Guys I can’t breath I’ve got these stupid Spanx on’, and then I’d show them to the audience and they all found it hilarious. Then I did a gig in America and moments before I went on stage, my agent told me that Sarah Silverman’s manager had seen me yesterday and said that I was too fat and didn’t have enough jokes. I went on stage and said: ‘So apparently, I’m too fat for you lot. Do you know what America, I’m so sick to death of
you’, and I pulled my trousers down and said bite me and they absolutely loved it and so I turned it into material for my act. Women love my show; they say it should be on the curriculum for their children. The reaction has been really positive. I crowd funded a DVD of my show and my audiences paid for it so I think that speaks for itself in terms of how much people like it. I’d love my show to be on Netflicks – that would be a dream. I think it’s important to be honest in comedy and personally that’s what I’ve always found funny so I don’t think there are any topics that are off limits. If the jokes aren’t authentic, it can just come across as crass and it doesn’t seem genuine and that’s when you run into problems. I talk about body image, mental health, sexual health, which are all important and relevant to not just women, but everyone. When people talk about mental health it’s usually quite… mental. Whereas I make it accessible and I think that’s the key with
these things. People don’t want to hear about depression through a boring talk, but if there was a really cool Beyoncé song that said: ‘It’s ok if you aren’t happy because there’s help out there’, then you’d definitely listen to it. Anything female focused on TV takes a back seat and I think the industry is capable of alienating a lot of really excellent acts with the hoops they make people jump through and the snobbery that’s in the industry. There are lots of brilliant female comics on the circuit and some really exciting voices coming through that should get a platform. A recent survey showed that 98% of people behind scenes of comedy are men. Comedy is a very white male middle class dominated industry and I think the TV likes to play it very safe with those acts. The eleventh Christmas day special is set on in the future, of course, opening with the snow-covered TARDIS sitting in a quiet village street. Fan-favourite, Alex Kingston, reprises her role as the feisty Professor River Song. She’s married to the Doctor but this is the first time she will meet him in new, Peter Capadli form. We follow their incredibly complex relationship across space and time.
DOWNTON ABBEY – ITV CHRISTMAS DAY SPECIAL
You better sit down for this, preferably with a mince pie in one hand and a tissue in the other – it’s the final ever episode of this beloved period drama. Set in Christmas and New Year’s Eve of 1925, Lady Rose has settled in America following her honeymoon, Tom Branson is in Boston and we learn the conclusion of the love lives of Lady Mary and Lady Edith, but, sadly, it may not be a good one. Patricia Hodge, known for playing Miranda’s Penny, is also joining the cast as we bid the series a final farewell.
SHERLOCK: THE ABOMINABLE BRIDE – BBC ONE CHRISTMAS DAY SPECIAL Sherlock is back with a bang on Christmas Day in this stand-alone special. In a twist from the usual contemporary setting, Holmes and Watson get back to their roots in Victorian London. Reportedly, the Bristol music venue Colston Hall, with its Victorian vaulted cellar, will be a setting for some scenes. Director, Douglas Mackinnon, teased fans by tweeting the quote ‘the stars were shining coldly in a cloudless sky’ from Conan Doyle’s Christmas story, The Adventure Of The Blue Carbuncle. At the same time as being on BBC One, fans can see the special broadcast at selected cinemas.

Following the success of last year’s The Boy in the Dress, BBC One is adapting another David Walliams book into an hour-long special. Billionaire Boy follows Joe, a lonely twelve-year old, who’s Dad, Len has become a billionaire after inventing a new toilet roll. Walliams stars as ‘dirty old’ dinner lady Mrs Trafe and Rebecca Front (The Thick of It) is Joe’s ‘firm but fair opera-loving teacher’. Warwick Davis plays himself as Joe’s celebrity butler. Look out for the ‘very special’ guest that Walliams has promised will have a cameo performance.

Everyone loves a party, but if you’re going to go to the effort of organising and paying for one this season, make sure it makes an impact. The first step is to know your audience. You know your friends and family best; would they prefer a silly fun event or revel in a sophisticated cocktail party? Create an event that they’ll enjoy. A good atmosphere, carefully planned food and drink, and some little touches to set your party apart from the others, and you can’t fail to have a hit on your hands.

Christmas Party Planning 101 It’s not simply a case of stringing up some lights and turning up the volume on Slade, throwing a festive bash needs careful planning. Susanna Richardson, luxury event planner to the stars, lets us in on a few trade secrets… FOOD & DRINK
I’m a big believer in food coming to guests for an evening event rather than a sit-down meal. More substantial canapés or bowl food is the way to go as nothing breaks up a party like a buffet. There’s no better excuse for themed food: think Santa strawberries, Rudolph doughnuts and Snowman milkshakes. The food you serve should be fun, thoughtful and make people smile as well as taste good. Drinks should be fun and opulent so consider hiring a cocktail bartender to whizz up some glitzy, attention-grabbing drinks and allow you to mingle with your guests. If your party’s taking place on a work day, serve an espresso martini as people arrive to give them a caffeine kick and get them into the mood.

CREATE AN ATMOSPHERE
It’s great to have festive elements about your party, but dare to be different: remember, people go to so many Christmas parties that a less festive theme could set yours apart. Think classy lighting and theming over full on fairy lights and tinsel. A few touches are better than all on Santa Cheer. Scent really sets the mood: Nothing says Christmas to me more than the smell of The White Company Winter candles. Burn some before your guests arrive and during the evening.Music is essential, and it has to be festive for a period. Opt for something cheerful and light as guests arrive and then move onto party music later. If your budget allows, then hire entertainment for a couple of hours – nothing gets a party going like live music. When it comes to décor, lighting is key. Simple pea-lights are brilliant if you don’t want to do too much. I always focus on lighting at all my events, it sets the mood so choose wisely. It’s much better to create some key focal points than totally overdoing a room. Fires are gorgeous but it’s amazing how hot a room gets with lots of people so fill the fire place with pillar candles or battery lights for the effect without the discomfort!
Handy Hints Hiring glassware is a great idea, but make sure you can take it back dirty if you don’t have helpful hands to wash everything. It’s a horrible job for the next day. There are excellent bar services that charge per person and actually don’t work out much more than stocking up yourself. It’s worth getting a quote and could save you a lot of time and effort.
MAKE IT A NIGHT TO REMEMBER
Christmas is the perfect time to introduce games to your party – they’re a massive ice breaker and allow people to let their hair down. At the parties I’m organising this year I’m using a balloon advent calendar and putting a game into each balloon. It’s an absolutely great idea as you can tailor it to any age: sweets and silly games for kids, and more risqué or drinking games for adults. Regardless of budget, giving everyone a gift before they leave is a lovely touch. If your party will be a boozy event, make up hangover kits with a festive twist – Christmas coffee, a chocolate snowman, asprin and a bottle of water. If you have a tree, then wrap your gifts and place them underneath, and invite guests to choose before they leave. The treats can be as cheap or as extravagant as you like. If it’s a big party at home, then consider hiring in staff. People often think it’s expensive but a couple of people to serve drinks and hand around food really won’t cost much at all. They will also clean up at the end of the night, which is invaluable the next day, and means you’ll enjoy the night as much as your guests.
People’s diaries get jammed at Christmas – if it’s a big event then send them a Save A Date, and make sure you issue a formal invitation. Lots of people use email services but I think you can’t beat a beautifully designed, posted invitation. If the party is in your home, make people aware of the time it finishes – you don’t want to be dealing with hangers on until 4am. Provide the number of a taxi service and advise guests to book in advance. Be the person who greets your guests. It’s hard as the host to get around everyone. Being the person who opens the door, takes guests’ coats and welcomes them ensures you get a little time with each. SALTED WHITE HOT CHOCOLATE INGREIDENTS: 4 tablespoons salted caramel sauce 100 g white chocolate, chopped 500 ml skimmed milk 200 ml double cream + Piping bag fitted with a small round nozzle Piping bag fitted with a large star nozzle 1. Place one tablespoon of the caramel sauce into the piping bag fitted with the small round nozzle and pipe decorative swirls inside two tall, heatproof glasses. Set aside. 2. Place the chopped white chocolate in a saucepan with the milk and two tablespoons of caramel sauce. Heat gently over low heat until the chocolate has melted, whisking all the time. Remove the hot chocolate from the heat.

110 g icing sugar 80 g ground almonds 2 large egg whites a pinch of salt 45 g caster sugar Pink food colouring gel Raspberry jam to serve
1. Whizz the icing sugar and ground almonds together in a food processor until very fine and then push the mixture through a fine meshed sieve and set aside.
+ 2 baking sheets lined with baking parchment, each marked with 4 cm circles on the underside of the parchment a large piping bag fitted with a very fine nozzle
3. Place the cream in a bowl with the final tablespoon of caramel sauce and whisk to stiff peaks. Spoon the cream into the piping bag fitted with the large star nozzle.

3. Carefully fold the almond mixture into the egg whites, until they have been fully incorporated but the mixture is still light. Carefully add a little pink colouring and fold in until the macarons are a uniform pink colour. 4. Spoon the mixture into the piping/pastry bag and pipe circles onto the parchment within the circular templates. Tap the baking sheets firmly on the work surface two or three times, to knock out any air bubbles and leave them to stand for 30 minutes. During this time, preheat the oven to 140°C (275°F) Gas 1.
4. Heat the hot chocolate again gently and carefully pour into the prepared glasses. Pipe a swirl of caramel cream on top of each glass and drizzle with a little of the reserved caramel.
