PAUL SMITH LANDS IN BIRMINGHAM

H&M X KENZO

As H&M’s collaborations with designers seem to be evergrowing, its most recent choice to team up with KENZO is certainly an exciting one. After teasing us earlier in the year with a video campaign shot by Jean-Paul Goode and featuring the likes of supermodel Iman and Chance the Rapper, the collection combines KENZO’s signature animal print with occasional elements of folklore. With bold prints and colours dominating the collection, KENZO x H&M will be available in more than 250 stores worldwide, as well as online, from November 3.

Following in the footsteps of Nottingham and London, Paul Smith recently became the latest addition to Birmingham’s shopping scene at the Mailbox. Bringing a flash of colour to the city, Paul Smith stocks both male and female collections, alongside accessories and shoes. As a store said to blend ‘old and new, rough and smooth’, the red exterior paired with a concrete interior is both inviting and exciting.

Meet

Barbara Horspool Renowned for her meticulous style and timeless designs, we catch up with The White Company Clothing Director, Barbara Horspool to talk decision making, craftsmanship in fashion and her top picks from the AW16 collection

E

stablished in 1994 by Chrissie Rucker MBE, The White Company is coveted for its simple and sophisticated style, with punctilious attention to detail and affordable price tags. Ranging from home accessories to clothing and childrenswear, the brand maintains a strict philosophy of creating high-quality, beautifully designed pieces that will stand the test of time. Having joined the company in December 2014, Clothing Director, Barbara Horspool has an impressive 35 years of industry experience under her belt. A Firstclass honours graduate from Kingston Polytechnic (now Kingston University), Horspool studied BA Fashion Design after becoming inspired by the music and fashion scene of the 1970s. It was here that she met business partner Mark Betty and set up clothing label, “Blanche in 1980, selling designs to stockists such as Joseph, Whistles and Harvey Nichols, to name but a few.

34 | Style Birmingham | Winter 2016

Words: Emma Walsh

Women / Careers

After working for several large retailers across different markets, Horspool wanted to return to a business that demanded the highest standard of design and quality. “I felt that the future of retail lay within selling a ‘lifestyle’, one that people could trust and respect -When I met Chrissie Rucker, I found that we shared many of the same values that working, busy mothers and career women often have.” A dynamic worker, Horspool begins her day by training in Primrose Hill at 6.15am every morning, “It’s the only time I have to myself, and keeping fit is massively important to me as it keeps me sane.” She then races to get to the office before 9am, ready for a jam-packed day ahead. From strategic meetings with suppliers and the Board of Directors, to looking at sketches and reviewing samples for new collections, Horspool is responsible for the look and feel of the brand. As a long-time fan of the company, she is often seen wearing garments and accessories from the line and has bought a number of items from the AW16 collection. Her key pieces for this season include: a cashmere pom-pom scarf, sheepskin coat, super-soft white cable knit sweater, silk print pyjamas and ‘A Christmas Wish’ children’s storybook, written by herself and illustrated by Catherine Rutherford. Customers can either visit the store in Grand Central Birmingham, or the concession in the Bullring’s Selfridges for a “luxurious, simple and calm” selection. But what is it that makes The White Company so successful? After starting out

as a 12-page mail order brochure, the company is now one of the UK’s fastest growing multi-channel retailers with annual turnover exceeding £180 million. “We are really obsessive about the details” says Horspool, “It’s not uncommon for us to reject many samples because we think something isn’t quite right. We believe that our pieces must have great longevity, both in style and quality.” Never compromising and always putting the customer first, she firmly believes in craftsmanship and exquisite designs. “Everything I look at or touch has to stir my senses and give me joy. If it makes me smile, I ask myself whether it will do the same for our customer. Will it make her feel good?” Having worked in the fashion industry for so many years, she’s learnt “that quality and understanding in everything you do are non-negotiable, particularly in retail (and in life too).” From starting out as an assistant, to working her way up to Clothing Director, Horspool is extremely well-versed in the design and fashion business, with her CV listing an impressive range of retailers such as M&S, New Look and Jigsaw. For those just starting out in their careers, her main advice is to “not be scared of making decisions or making mistakes; good ideas fly around and anyone can grab hold of them, but they’re only good if you act on them.” So what is next for the in demand brand? With 51 stores across the UK and a US website, The White Company will open its international doors to New York next summer. “This will be our landmark moment. We are a very sensory, tactile brand so this is an important next step as we deliver an experiential concept to the American market.” Remaining a consistent supplier of designer-quality items for more than two decades, The White Company’s understated, classic style appeals to a multitude of people who are searching for well-made, timeless designs. Offering unparalleled customer service and luxuriously crafted products, the brand’s attention to detail is what sets it apart from other High Street stores. Whether adding ambiance to the home, creating a capsule wardrobe or styling the little ones, “There’s a place in everyone’s life for white.”

Katie Melua

Following a three-year hiatus, Katie Melua is back with an inspirational album, a brand new tour and an ever-growing passion for music Words: Becky Weaver

36 | Style Birmingham | Winter 2016

i

Women / Interview

t’s a cold Friday morning when Katie calls my office. I’ve never had the pleasure of speaking to the 32-year-old singer/ songwriter before, but after talking to her for just two minutes I feel like I’m simply catching up with an old friend. And as much as I’m enjoying chatting to Katie about all things from the sudden drop in temperature that’s hit the country, to what we’re planning to do with the rest of our days, what I really want to know about is her brand new album and up-and-coming tour. It’s been a few years since we’ve heard anything from Katie. Following the release of her number one debut album Call Off The Search back in 2003, which features the stunning Closest Thing To Crazy, she became one of the most respectable names ‘ in the music industry. Now, she’s back with a brand new album and in the midst of making the final preparations for her tour. “It’s so nice to be back,” she beams down the phone to me. “This album took an awful lot of time, which might seem surprising to some people but there’s a lot of work that goes into putting a record together.” That I can believe, each of Katie’s albums are all individual works of art. She’s sold more than 11 million records, over one million concert tickets and racked up an impressive 56 platinum awards. In Winter is very much a step in a new direction for Katie, having made six albums in her 20s she tells me that she didn’t know if the world needed another Katie Melua album. Thankfully she decided to return and

brought in the enchanting Gori Women’s Choir from her hometown of Georgia, USA, creating a stunning collaboration record themed around winter. “It took a lot of research to do this album. The idea came from a conversation that I was having with a friend of mine a few winters ago. There was a lot of reading and writing involved but now I’m delighted that it’s something that I can share with the world.” So what made her decide to produce a collaboration album? Over the years Katie has gained a huge following for her soothing songs that simply revolve around her velvet voice and delicate melodies created by her acoustic guitar. “The choir is so inspiring, I’ve learnt so much from them when it comes to singing, aiming for something artistically and how to get it. They really inspired this record and they do something with their voices, which I consider to be, quite astonishing. “Because it’s a classical choir it can get very dense and serious, it can be a really challenging listen. But I’m a real believer that even pop music can take that level of artistic detail, it just depends on how you wrap it up, our wrapping method on this record was the theme of winter and the atmosphere that winter choral music creates. I felt like that would be a good way of presenting this very astonishing artistic level that these singers are at.” After discovering the choir on Spotify, Katie was determined to make them part of the album and returned to Gori with her crew and 12 boxes packed with equipment to build her own recording studio. “I went out to the studio with my co-producer Cecil Adam Bartlett, we didn’t know what was going to greet us once we got there because there’s no recording studio in Gori,” she laughs. “We shouldn’t have worried, the people there were so warm and friendly, and the choir were so excited to have the potential to make something that could be released from a UK base. I was able to give them a platform to create a record and that really excited me.” For Katie it’s been so important to share every element of this album with the choir, she tells me how she was always keen to build a strong relationship with its members and make sure that they weren’t just seen as a backing group. “The choir had to be the second lead or the co-lead, that was really essential. I didn’t want to waste the talent that they had, and what it is they could bring to the record. I think our industry is so focused on the superiority of a single artist being some kind of a superior creature to the rest of society, and that’s all hocus pocus, it’s not real. So removing your ego from a record is really essential I think. Working with the choir in that environment

‘Music is still the greatest thing and I still want to continue to grow and become better and refine what I do further and further’

reminded me what an incredible career I’ve had, the experiences and what I’ve learned from each one.” Katie’s passion for the choir shines through to me clear as a bell. It’s refreshing to hear that her love for music is something that inspires every element of her life. Whilst some might say that In Winter is slightly different to Katie’s previous work, for me, it’s a delight. Listening to the album shows just how much her sound and style has progressed, and I’m keen to know what made her change her tune. “Before I began to work on the album I really got thinking about music and how phenomenal it is and what it can do, I’m always so inspired by it. “The record industry is so full of politics and lots of crazy things that go on that could really easily put people off, and I think most people get put off by the record industry which is a real shame. Humans will always adore music, it’s one of the greatest things we can do, our achievements in how music unites, comforts and consoles people, is something that always has and always will continue to excite me. “I really try to put aside any thoughts of my career, or the path of where it’s all going for me. Music is still the greatest thing and I still want to continue to grow and become better and refine what I do further.” Whilst continuing to tell me tales of her time recording with the choir I begin to wonder what Katie’s tour will be like. After all, she’s going to go from all eyes being on

her to sharing a stage with a choir of 23. “In the past being the centre of attention on stage has been a bit of a challenge for me. I love watching and observing the world, so when I’m the only one being watched at gigs, it’s not always been my most natural comfortable circumstance to be in; to be able to share it with people that are so talented and so phenomenal at what they do is really exciting for me.” Katie’s nine-date tour kicks off on November 23 in Guilford before she heads to Birmingham to take to the stage of the Symphony Hall on December 1. “I definitely have played in Birmingham before, I’m not sure if I have played at the Symphony Hall itself,” she says, her voice filled with excitement. The venues for this tour are a far cry from Katie’s previous shows that saw her perform in front of thousands at London’s prestigious O2 arena. “I’m so delighted about the venues that have been picked for this tour because the album is just a guitar, my voice and the choir’s voices,” she continues. “Each venue has got a certain type of ambience and feel, the concert halls, and the more intimate venues are really going to be a good experience for people when they come and see us.”

Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, £33.30, John Lewis

Are you experimental with your make-up? During the week I’m pretty natural with my make-up, especially if I’ve got work because I don’t do my own then, the artists do what they want. As soon as it’s the weekend and I’m going out with my friends I’m definitely experimental with it. I always try new things if it means that it looks good. What’s your go-to make-up look? I really like a bronze smokey eye; I’ve got blue eyes so it makes them stand out. Do you have any tips on how to achieve a good smokey eye? A smokey eye is a good because if it goes wrong and looks a bit messy you can make it a bit rock n’ roll, give it a bit of a Kate Moss vibe. If you make it messy on purpose it doesn’t matter. Do you have any favourite products at the moment? For foundation I love Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk, it’s an incredible product. I’m a huge fan of RapidLash Eyelash Enhancing Serum, I’ve been using that recently and my eyelashes have grown so much, it’s so good. For my skin, I’ve been using Lancer Skincare a lot lately. I think Kim Kardashian uses it. I can’t get enough of Charlotte Tilbury’s new products either. Do you have a product that you can’t live without? Probably my mascara because I feel naked without it. As long as I’ve got that on I’m happy. I tried eyelash extensions the other month for my holiday because I can’t really have them with work, they were brilliant to have on when I was away. Do you wear make-up everyday? I do have days where I’m make-up free but most days I have it on. I enjoy putting it on, it’s nice to spend 10 minutes in the morning putting it on; it’s a fun thing to do, I find it quite therapeutic. What’s your top make-up skill? I’m pretty good at putting false eyelashes on. I can just do it with my fingers really quickly. I know usually some people find it really fiddly, I used to find it really awkward to do, but now putting them on is just second nature to me.

Chloe Lloyd What part of your make-up routine do you pay extra attention to? I take the most time focusing on my skin. I find it so hard to make it look as natural as possible whilst getting perfect coverage. It’s a challenge trying to get that perfect glowing, amazing skin, so I really like to take my time achieving that. I like using the Beauty Blender because it just helps to create flawless coverage. What up-and-coming brands do we need to look out for? I’ve been working with a brand called Delilah Cosmetics and it’s really nice. It’s a new brand but it’s already quite high end. I’ve also been using this highlighter recently by a brand called Laura Geller; its products are sold on QVC and they’re so good. I got sent it and I didn’t even know anything about the brand and now I can’t stop using it. Recently I did a campaign with a brand called Iconic London and it’s brought out these incredible Pigment Foundation Sticks, I’ve been using those to. What does your daily skincare routine consist of? I take my make-up off everyday. I make sure I cleanse and exfoliate, it makes my skin feel so much nicer. I love using a scrubber and Chanel’s products are amazing. I’m a huge fan of the Pixi Glow Tonic Exfoliator too. I finish off with an eye cream if I’ve got one just because everyone says to use them. I apply a moisturiser every evening just to aid my skin. In the morning I just cleanse using the Yves Saint Laurent All-in-One BB Créme. Chloe Lloyd is signed to Select Model Management

Winter Hair Royston Blythe’s guide to this season’s must-have hair colours

W

inter is here, there is a definite chill in the air and our appointment diary is already getting full with Christmas bookings. With the arrival of the new season, we recommend that our clients reconsider their hair colour to ensure that it compliments their new cool complexion. Now’s the time to embrace the opportunity and find yourself a new signature colour.

HERE ARE OUR FAVOURITE ENVY-INDUCING HAIR COLOURS FOR THE SEASON AHEAD: NATURAL BLONDES

Cara Delevingne and Georgia Mai Jagger are your key inspirations. You should opt for softer highlights that are woven into darker, earthy tones to keep your look super natural. Get treatments that will ensure your look is uber glossy, fresh and oh-so healthy. We always recommend an in salon Kerastase Fusio Dose treatment after any colour service.

PLATINUM BLONDE

This will always be a cool option and make a fabulous statement. Off-white was embraced on the catwalk and is set to overtake the silver/grey trend that has been a key look over recent seasons. Olaplex has been deemed the ‘holy grail’ for those who desire lighter tones. If you’re unfamiliar with Olaplex, it’s a turbo-charged conditioning treatment that is perfect for any client who colours their hair but especially for blondes. 42 | Style Birmingham | Winter 2016

101 TOP TIP Ensure you receive a thorough consultation with an expert colourist. You should listen to specialist advice when considering a colour change, this will ensure your hair colour is personalised to compliment your features and it will limit any damage caused during a colour change.

BRUNETTES

This season brunettes should go for all over warmth with high gloss and shine. The goddess of British style, Victoria Beckham does brunette beautifully. Balayage colour and subtle ombres are the most requested colour services and for winter you should go for slightly darker, richer roots to compliment your paler complexion. If you’re concerned about the damage that lightening your darker locks can do, why not consider hair extensions such as Rapture that allow you to introduce additional tones into your hair? You can achieve incredible balayage and ombre effects with absolutely no damage.

RED

Red is always a winner during the winter months and this season you can choose to be as dramatic or as subtle as you wish. Balayage and softer ombres are a great way of diffusing the drama, or you could go global with romantic, opulent or vibrant tones.

Get the Look: SIMPLE WINTER UP DO

1. Work on day-old hair and tong in big sections. 2. Gently tease your hair from the nape of the neck to just below the crown and then smooth over with a hairbrush. 3. Gather your hair into a loose ponytail and softly pull it about four inches from the scalp. 4. Gently tease the ponytail for texture and to add volume, then spray through with a light spritz of hairspray. 5. Roll the ponytail into itself and then carefully pin into the nape of the neck. 6. Complete the look by combing your hair in to the desired shape so that it falls gently around the face. Spritz with a light hairspray and then loosely pull out as little or as much as you feel suits you. 7. Apply one last spritz of hairspray to set in to place. We love Kerastase Laque Noire as a finishing spray, it’s an ultra-sensorial formula that guarantees shine, and provides a powerful anti-humidity shield - it keeps hair polished and looking fabulous!

STARRY EYED

WHITE NOISE

To achieve this striking look a foiled eyeshadow is your staple product. The key to this look is to create a wing that best suits the shape of your eye. For lips, stick to a winter berry shade and apply gloss over the top which is perfect for this season. If you want to intensify your metallic look, dampen your brush - we recommend using the (1)Prep + Prime 24-Hour Extend Eye Base, £16, MAC- and apply your eyeshadow wet.

1

6

2

RIGHT ANGLES

To start off apply a bronze shadow as a colour-wash over the lid, this will create a solid base for your liner. Using (2] Fluidline pen, £18, MAC and a (3)266 Small Angle Brush, £16.50, MAC you will be able to produce a sharply defined line. Take your time, apply liner in stages to ensure both eyes are as symmetrical as possible. It’s always best to line the lashline first on both eyes, then create the wings on both sides and go from there. For lips, go with a natural shade with a balm over to ensure that your eyes remain the centre of attention.

Begin by applying a subtle gold as a colour-wash over the lid, pairing it with a bold lip in a super deep and glossy colour. Using (4)NYX white liquid liner, £5.50, Boots gently map out a shape ensuring a fine line curving around the eye. Once you have both sides looking symmetrical, go back in with a fine liner brush to make the lines bolder and more intense. When going for a graphic liner look, ensure the shape you’re creating suits your eye shape. Always follow the natural shape of the eyes.

GOLD RUSH

4

Apply a bronze/gold colour across your lids followed by your liner. Finish by applying gloss over your lid to achieve a ‘wet look’ - try to avoid areas with liner. Use an eyeshadow or paint pot with lasting power which will stay put under gloss to avoid creasing. We love the (5)Pro Longwear Paint Pot, £16, MAC and (6)Maybelline’s Color Tattoo 24Hr Eyeshadows, £4.99, Superdrug is perfect if you’re on a budget. 5

s soon as you get home from work, cleanse your face regardless of whether you’ve worn make-up that day. At best you’ll be cleansing your skin of any pollution and environmental aggressors, and at worst you’ll be removing grime and make-up. For me nothing gives quite such a thorough cleanse as a hot, fluffy flannel. (1)Garnier’s 2 in 1 Eye Make-up Remover, £3.29, Boots is a steal and will remove any prominent colours on the eyes and lips. For the rest of the face, try a cleansing balm to nourish and clean at the same time. (2)Trilogy Make-Up Be Gone Cleansing Balm, £20.50, lookfantastic.co.uk will melt away all make-up and dirt whilst leaving a hydrating, cushioned finish. Taking your make-up off early in the evening will mean that your cleanser has all night to work its way into your skin, plus it will help to alleviate the drying impact from your central heating. Skin cleansed, now it’s the time to pamper. This year masks have made a real comeback, especially with all the new textures and technologies. Nannette de Gaspé has blown my mind with her dry mask formulas, (3)£60, nannettedegaspe.com. Reusable and bandagelike in texture, you apply these luxurious masks dry to cleansed skin and gently rub them to activate the nourishing process. For those who wish to achieve a more tightening, youthinfusing look, the new (4)Glamglow Gravity Mud, £39, glamglow.co.uk will be just the ticket. This silver face mask leaves you looking like the tin-man on initial application but peels off in one pleasing motion when dry.

1 For me, the crucial winter factor is layering moisture into each skincare step. Rather than skipping straight to a moisturiser, now’s the time for an extra hit of hydration. For those who want something calming, (5)Bobbi Brown Extra Repair Nourishing Milk, £54, John Lewis is divine. Richer than serum and not as heavy as oil, it melts seamlessly into the skin and feels instantly comforting. Those with drier skin will want something more hard-hitting, in which case (6)Rosalena Rock & Rose Facial Oil, £42 from Rosalena is a must-have. I was initially drawn to this product for indulgent purposes (my name is Rosaleen so Rosalena was too good to pass up) but marketing aside these oils are plumping, nourishing and give me glowing skin by morning. Now for the bedtime finishing touches. Every complexion will love the soft, rich texture of the new (7)Aerin Rose Night Table Cream and Overnight Mask, £60, John Lewis. The clean, feminine scent is nostalgic of a dressing table from time gone by, and the rosy base will calm any skin irritation. Dry hands will be revived by Jo Malone London’s new (8)Geranium and Walnut Hand Cream, £22, Jo Malone London at Grand Central Birmingham, one of the few to genuinely deliver a non-oily hydration, drying to a velvety finish. Finally, for all-over comfort you’ll want to explore the new This Works Sleep Plus range. An avid user of the (8)Sleep Mist, £26, Harvey Nichols for several years, I was delighted to recently discover (9)Sleep Plus Hair Elixir, £26, Harvey Nichols and (10)Dream Body lotion, £26, Harvey Nichols. Use these 10 minutes before you go to bed and you’ll sleep like a baby.

Journey into The Wilderness Have you ever wondered what it would be like if punk rock met fine dining? Then you may want to take a trip to The Wilderness. We went along to try out the city’s hottest restaurant and catch up with head chef Alex Claridge

T

here’s no denying that this city isn’t short of choice of spectacular places to eat, we’ve tried and tested quite a few of them, but The Wilderness seemed a cut above the rest. Dudley Street isn’t the most attractive part of Birmingham to walk through, so you wouldn’t expect one of the most intriguing restaurants to be housed there. We arrive outside The Wilderness on a rather wet Thursday afternoon and within seconds we were eager to get inside. The concealed entrance is covered in black tree branches and doesn’t give too much away; straight away we know that we’re about to embark on a dining experience like no other. If you’ve heard of The Wilderness, you probably know it as the outlandish restaurant that serves ants - it does and they’re delicious - but it’s also so much more than that. Ants aside, it’s a creative space that is pushing the culinary experience of fine 54 | Style Birmingham | Winter 2016

dining to a whole new level; trust us when we say you won’t have come across anything like it before. Owned by Head Chef Alex Claridge, who’s passion for food is so inspiring it’s almost infectious - which probably explains why our brief chat with him lasts over an hour - The Wilderness is rapidly making a name for itself and attracting diners from across the country. The reason why people are flocking here comes as no surprise to us, our entire dining experience from beginning to end is a triumph. The lunch menu named ‘Things Fall Apart’ is £35 for five courses and an additional £25 if you want to include drinks - which we completely recommend if you want to get the most out of your experience. It’s worth every penny you pay, honestly. The staff are knowledgeable and informative, whilst maintaining a welcoming personality and take the time to actually get to know you and your story, whether you’re there for a special occasion

‘I want people to understand that we’re trying to create something that goes beyond food.’

or simply because you’re intrigued by what The Wilderness has to offer. The dining space, which holds 24, is kitted out like a forest - even the white tiles that cover the walls expose hints of moss - never has fine dining been so immersive. It’s a relaxed environment to sit in, at no point do you ever feel like you shouldn’t belong here, yet the restaurant still manages to effortlessly ooze luxury. Having relaunched earlier in the year, Alex and his team are planning to expand in January. “It’s still quite young for us, we don’t want to go massive,” he says. “I want to keep the restaurant small so that I can continue to have a dialogue with diners. We’re going to create more space to make people feel as comfortable as they can. We want to have this theatrical space that people can really appreciate. “We’re always looking at more intriguing ways of engaging people and ways to share a piece of us with them because that’s what life’s all about. I want people to understand that we’re trying to create something that goes beyond food.” For Alex making sure that his guests enjoy every element of their experience is crucial, and to us, he seems incredibly humbled by the response The Wilderness has received. “People travel from all over the country to come and visit little old us, which is really lovely but it actually terrifies me slightly,” he says. “On a Saturday we have a full restaurant with around 40 to 50 people on a waiting list who want to come and spend time with

us and that’s so cool for me, it’s something that continues to give me goosebumps.” Now, the food; each plate is so picturesque that part of you doesn’t want to destroy it, yet when you do it speaks to you in ways that you never imagined. We laughed, we cried, we smiled - never had eating lunch felt like such an emotional roller coaster that you normally experience in a long-term relationship. “We’re trying to cook the best food that we can, a lot of our kitchen is Michelin background, and people want to work at that level, but we’re not trying to do exclusive, it’s not for me. We want it to be an inclusive luxury. The restaurant is built on classic foundations and our cooking isn’t actually as mad as people think it is. “We treat all of our ingredients with respect, the only difference is that we’re trying to present classical things in a nostalgic way where we look back on the past and respect and love our food for what it is, but in a hyper-modern sense where you can also make people look at food in a new way with a broader context.” Each menu is all about evoking memories, the food takes you to places you forgot about and introduces you to new ways of living in the moment that you never thought were possible. “The Wilderness is always evolving depending on how I feel, but it has got a vague sense of what we’re trying to articulate creatively, which I think stems from the fact that there is food and drink which I find personally deeply evocative,” Alex says. The dishes have quirky names that reflect the personality of the restaurant and are inspired by everything from Brexit to the destruction of the city’s beloved old library. “We’ve taken an approach to having dishes that are expressive,” Alex adds. “It all collides in this mishmash which fortunately people

seem to support and understand. The more challenging things we create tend to be what diners seem most drawn to.” And the dishes are certainly challenging; the tastes, textures and smells make you really question the meaning behind the dish, they toy with your emotions in ways that you can’t imagine. “The idea of playing with memories and manipulating the senses to look at elements of the dish and how they appear to other people is a great way to stir something within them and bring them back to a social environment. “We want the food to be delicious, but we also want it to have a context or purpose because otherwise it’s just cooking.” Creating dishes that hold a context is something that’s really important to Alex and his team, and in our opinion, it’s what makes The Wilderness thrive. “Our Christmas menu is called ‘Terrible Lies We Tell Small Children’ and it’s a really cool menu; the final course looks like a piece of coal served in a cracker. “We’re taking all these traditional things and we want to present them in delicious ways and make them a little bit different. We need to stop following these traditional myths and create our own. “I think it’s going to be a long process but we see everything as a collaboration with our guests, we’re not suddenly going to go super-abstract and I believe that people will continue to follow us and see that we’re not complete nut jobs, we’re doing things because we think that it’s the right thing for us to do.” To book a table at The Wilderness visit wearethewilderness.co.uk or call 0121 643 2673

The Stars of the City

Following the release of the Michelin Star Guide 2017, we give you the low-down on Birmingham’s finest restaurants Words: Jade Woodhouse

ADAM’S WATERLOO STREET After changing location and making huge renovations earlier this year, Adam’s contemporary design and sleek interior simply highlights how the restaurant has gone from strength to strength since its opening in 2013. Initially intended as a ‘pop-up’ for husband and wife duo Adam and Natasha Stokes, Adam’s gained its Michelin star just six months after opening, and finally claimed permanent residence in the city centre’s New Oxford House in early 2016. Aside from its Michelin star, Adam’s boasts three AA Rosettes, and a score of seven in the Good Food Guide. The modern menu is split into three options; lunch, tasting and three course, all of which offer quirky combinations of the finest quality and highest standard. From wild duck with plum ketchup to veal sweetbread, you won’t be left disappointed with the range of food Adam’s has to offer.

FOODIE FACT In October TripAdvisor rated Adam’s the third best restaurant in the UK and ninth best in the world.

FOODIE FACT Groups of up to 12 can enjoy private dining in the beautifully restored original library of Sir Fredrick Peel himself.

PEEL’S AT HAMPTON MANOR HOTEL SOLIHULL As a new addition to the Michelin Star Guide, Peel’s offers something a little bit different to other restaurants in the surrounding areas. With the advantage of a stunning rural setting, this grand manor hotel boasts an interesting menu of experimental dishes. With organic and well-sourced ingredients being a key feature of its success, Peel’s also offers a ‘Tasting Room’ experience like no other, whereby guests can view their food being prepared. If you’re looking to escape city life, Peels at Hampton Manor Hotel is a real hidden gem, with creative menus and tantalising flavours.

TURNERS @ 69 HARBORNE Located in Harborne, Turners @ 69 has recently undergone a few changes, one of which includes updating the name of the restaurant itself. Alongside this, owner Richard Turner chose to scrap overcomplicated and lengthy menus, and instead replaced them with simple, fussfree alternatives. In an attempt to make fine dining more accessible, the relaunch of Turners @ 69 offers a less formal (and less intimidating) approach, whilst bringing the focus back to what dining is really all about - great food in comfortable surroundings.

FOODIE FACT Turners @ 69 recently released a promotional picture of stern-faced Head Chef, Richard Turner posing as Jack Nicholson in The Shining, bringing a fun and humorous feel to the new restaurant.

FOODIE FACT This year Glynn Purnell is backing University College Birmingham’s Young Chef of the Year competition.

PURNELL’S CORNWALL STREET Head chef Glynn Purnell has come a long way since the start of his cooking career at the age of just 14, and yet has remained loyal to his home city of Birmingham. Purnell’s is everything you’d expect from a fine dining restaurant and more, with vibrant and sophisticated interior and an innovative menu with a bit of something for everyone. After being awarded a Michelin star in 2009, Purnell’s has since branched out into a stylish bistro and bar just around the corner.

The tradition is believed to date back to the 18th century and originates from the Latin verb aperire, which means to open. The idea is that an early evening tipple opens, or stimulates, your appetite leading to a more enjoyable dining experience. Sounds perfect, right? Berbieri For a traditional Aperitivo opt for a dry or Aperol, £17.50 bitter drink. Favourites include Vermouth, Aperol Spritz, Martini, Negroni and Prosecco. The Italians tend to steer clear of overly sweet or creamy cocktails. When it comes to the food, keep it simple with olives and nuts or push the boat out a little with Italian cheeses, meats and antipasti. Remember though this is only a pre-dinner warm-up so be careful not to over-indulge on the caprese! SIMPSONS EDGBASTON Sitting on the outskirts of Birmingham City Centre in Edgbaston is Simpsons, a restaurant that is so much more than a dining experience. With added extras such as overnight stay options, alongside a popular Cookery School led by senior chefs, Simpsons has seemingly reinvented fine dining for the modern day, adapting itself to an ever-changing society. With years of international experience under his belt, Chef and owner Andreas Antona is a well-respected and highly acclaimed figure in the culinary industry, with previous work including The Dorchester and The Ritz. Due to being situated in a Grade II listed building, Simpsons received a modern interior update last year, to further ensure the innovative restaurant remains interesting to customers. After a whirlwind 2015, I caught up with Olly Murs to talk all about his new album, his childish video for Grow Up and plans for his 2017 tour

Insider / Playlist

I

t’s a busy Tuesday afternoon when Olly calls me. He’s just finished signing 4,000 album covers in his flat before heading off to do some work for TV. Life is moving fast for the 32-yearold, but he’s still as charming as ever. It’s been a really busy year for the cheeky Essexman, after presenting The X Factor with Caroline Flack, he returned to the studio and is now releasing his fifth album in seven years. “The X Factor was a really great experience for me,” he says, “But I’m a singer and I always found myself wanting to go out and perform. I enjoyed my time on the show but it’s been great to bring my focus back to music. “I haven’t been following it this year. I keep my weekends to myself now, I like to spend time with my family and friends. When I’m on tour I don’t get to see much of them.” 2015 was a tough year for Olly, after splitting with his girlfriend of three years, he began to pen 24HRS. “I needed a way to express what I was feeling at the time. I’d never written anything so personal before, I think it’s the most honest album that I’ve ever done.” Although the album reflects heartbreak, Olly admits that it’s still packed with the upbeat music fans have grown to love over the years. “I don’t think that the music on this album is really all that different, it still has those cheeky tracks that people love,” he continues. “It was important to come back with music that was fresh, the industry is always evolving

and I want to make sure I’m producing music that I know my fans will love.” So far we’ve heard two singles from the 12 track album. Olly burst back onto the music scene with his single You Don’t Know Love, with powerful lyrics that I’ve never heard from the happy-go-lucky singer before. His cheeky side seemed to appear a little more in his latest single Grow Up, despite the lyrics remaining a little sharp. “The song is me telling someone that you need to grow up and become a little more mature, it could be me, it could be anyone,” he says. “It was such a fun video to film, it’s quite a harsh subject, so we wanted the video to be a little more light-hearted and have some humour to it.I wanted to work with the kids and have a laugh and I think the video is something that reflects the lyrics of the song really well.” The promotion for the single also brought a bright side to the slightly dark lyrics of Grow Up. Olly released clips on his Instagram of various celebrities including Simon Cowell, Shawn Mendes and many more telling him to grow up. “I was originally going to use this idea for Kiss Me, but I thought it would look a little strange with celebrities saying, ‘kiss me like you mean it’,”he laughs. Olly’s career has been nothing but successful ever since he was runner-up on The X Factor back in 2009. With millions of album sales and four UK number one singles under his belt, the Troublemaker singer has now become

one of the most loved artists in the industry. The remainder of 2016 is looking pretty busy for Olly, but next year he’ll be heading back on tour where he’ll be taking to the stage of the Genting Arena for three nights. “Tour kicks off next March, it’s going to be amazing,” he beams. “I absolutely love going on tour and Birmingham is always such a great crowd, most of my band are from the city too. One night has already sold out which is so lovely to see.” I know all too well what to expect from Olly’s next tour. A born entertainer, I’ve seen him win over his audience with ease every time he’s visited the city. “I haven’t got a set list in place yet but I’m definitely going to have a mix of the old and the new. “It’s important that I include tracks that people love. I’d like to think that I’m the type of guy where people don’t come away from my gigs and say ‘Oh, I wish he’d played that song.’ I want fans to come along and really enjoy the show.” Before I know it my time with Olly has come to an end, but it won’t be long before he’s back in the city and we can dance along to what is sure to be another fantastic tour.

24HRS by Olly Murs is out November 11. To get tickets to his 2017 tour visit gentingarena.co.uk

Be The Champion Party Planner This Winter

Words: Tara Tomes

T

he party season is almost upon us and, if you’re anything like me, your diary will already be filling up and you’ll already be scouring the high street for the best partywear. If this is your year to host – whether that’s a Christmas gathering for friends, work night out or the big day itself – I’m here to help get you through it. Running events for a living means that December is just another events tick list, which leads me nicely to my first piece of advice…

BE ORGANISED!

I’m a little bit OCD, which is perfect for an event planner. Colour-co-ordinated ‘to do’ lists should become your friend if you’ve got a party coming up. Make sure you list everything you need to do, even down to the smallest detail. When things get stressful, the little things can slip and you don’t want your guests noticing dusty skirting boards now, do you? I tend to create a spreadsheet that maps out timings and deadlines – print it out on A3 and live by it throughout the planning period. It may sound crazy but you’ll thank me for it later.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT

If you’re planning a party that’s not at home, then your choice of venue is the first step of your journey, and it really is an important one. Whilst I don’t want to put down the humble social club, this season is all about glitz and glamour so find a venue that gives you the chance to shine! Birmingham is bursting full of great venues and, at EAST VILLAGE., we have worked with some brilliant ones this year. In the summer we helped Malmaison Birmingham launch its brand new meetings and event space, Work+Play. And just last month, we were also lucky enough to work with the team at Marco Pierre White’s for #Style50, celebrating 50 62 | Style Birmingham | Winter 2016

issues of this very gorgeous magazine. The party took place at Canalside, a stunning new venue in The Cube, which comes as an empty shell so you can put your party planning stamp on it. Why not also look at more unusual venues; places like the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery or thestudio on Cannon Street.

CHOOSE A THEME

When I say ‘theme’, don’t immediately think of fancy dress. I am talking about colours, patterns and textures that bring your party together. If there’s one thing the wedding industry has taught us, it’s that a theme makes all the difference so it’s time to get yourself on Pinterest and

get some inspiration. Pinterest really is a great way to bring your idea to life. Once you’ve chosen a look you like, try and make it run through every element of your event; from the invites, through to the venue décor and even the drinks. For big events we do this on a huge scale, even coming up with lighting schemes that fit the theme, but for a smaller party this could just be the simple things like balloons, straws, napkins, cups and plates. It needn’t be expensive; eBay is brilliant for this kind of thing and you can find everything you need. We held a big American Frat party for a student shopping event and got everything from the beer pong table to the cheerleader outfits on eBay. Don’t underestimate its power.

Insider / Party Planning

INVITES AND GUESTLIST

So, it might sound like I’m getting too technical but the best parties involve the best people, so make sure you get the guestlist right. Appreciated, if it’s a work do, you don’t really have the option to leave out Grumpy Glenda or Pervy Paul but when you have the power… use it. In the events industry it can be tempting to bring in ‘rent a crowd’ to fill a room but it gives your event zero credibility; I’d rather choose a smaller venue or change the format of the event to ensure the right people are there. Once you’ve got that guestlist, make sure the invites stand out. If you’ve got the money, go for something different… I’ve seen everything from handdelivered vinyls for a music event to an invite that requires a naked flame to reveal the info about a cocktail bar launch. Be different and creative; with so many events happening over the next couple of months, make yours stand out. If digital invites are more your thing, just make sure they look nice (and carry your theme through them). I use a system called Greenvelope.com, which allows you to personalise every element of your invite, including the guests’ name appearing on the front of an envelope within the email. The best thing about systems like this is that you can see who has opened it, which makes it easier to chase replies, and it automatically creates your guestlist for you. Gone are the days of confusing spreadsheets!

CREATE THE ‘WOW’ FACTOR

From the moment your guests walk in, you want to create maximum impact. If you’re holding an event at home, think about candles and flowers (not too close to each other, mind) to create the atmosphere, and serve your guests cracking cocktails as soon as they arrive. Just because there are only eight of you it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have five-star treatment. Likewise if it’s a big party or event, dress the room in a way that wows. For the #Style50 event we had ‘STYLE’ in giant light-up letters and neon furniture to brighten the room. To add something different to the event, alongside the stylish furniture and festival-style lighting, we added in a cocktail shack and candyfloss stall… keep the little surprises coming throughout your event. We also moved away from typical champagne and canapés, with personalised cocktails and food like mini sliders (burgers, to the average man), pizza slices and churros. The way to any guests’ heart is through their stomach.

HAVE PERFECT PHOTO OPPS

We live in a world obsessed by Instagram and Snapchat, and you should embrace this. Again, if you’re hosting a dinner party why not have some fun props at the dinner table like fake glasses and moustaches… they always get people laughing. At a bigger event, make sure you have a photo booth or at least a photographer to capture the evening – and don’t forget to introduce a hashtag. It’s a brilliant way of promoting what you’re doing but also gives you a chance to look back at how much fun everyone was having whilst you were running around making sure everything was ok. Rather than a traditional photo booth, we have a great guy who has a magic mirror photo booth, which means that other guests can watch the posing in action. Head over to the Style Birmingham Facebook page to check out photos from the night, they look brilliant. Did you know you can also have your own

Snapchat filter? I didn’t until I went to The High Field’s Ginfields event in the summer and now I’m all about a geo-filter for events.

BE A GREAT HOST!

So, when everything is in order and the event is in full swing, you just have one last job. Being a great host. Remember the rule of event management: be a swan… when things feel like they’re tumbling around you, keep your head held high and appear calm on the outside (even when you’re panicking inside). Don’t forget that it’s only you who knows most of the things that might go wrong… and let some of the things happen. You can’t control everything. If you’re organised and you’ve got everything else right then just enjoy the moment and show your guests a great time. Winter 2016 | Style Birmingham | 63

Winter Blockbusters Escape the cold winter nights and feast your eyes on our top films being released throughout November

Words: Becky Weaver and Natasha Bennett

THE ACCOUNTANT | NOVEMBER 4 At a young age, Christian Wolff’s passion for complex maths left people stunned. Now an adult he’s a successful financial consultant but his story has a dark side as he is, in fact, an accountant for some of the most dangerous criminals on the planet. This intense movie starring Ben Affleck and Anna Kendrick will keep you on the edge of your seat.

A STREET CAT NAMED BOB | NOVEMBER 4 Based on the best-selling novel, this delightful film starring Luke Treadaway is bound to warm you up. Directed by Tomorrow Never Dies’ Roger Spottiswoode, A Street Cat Named Bob tells the true story of author James Bowen’s struggle with addiction and life on the streets. But everything changes when Bowen strikes up a beautiful relationship with a friendly feline who makes his way into the supported living home where Bowen is staying.

Let’s Talk About: The Great British Bake Off Innuendos, soggy bottoms and Mary Berry- what’s not to love? It’s been a highlight of our Wednesdays for a while now, and with the recent public outrage regarding The Great British Bake Off moving from BBC One to Channel 4, it seems only right that we celebrate the programme in all its glory. For the unfortunate few who haven’t had the pleasure of watching GBBO, the competitive baking show focuses on a group of individuals undertaking a series of tasks to become the ultimate baking champion. Come rain or shine, the bakers flock to the iconic white tent ready to take on three challenges a week; Signature, Technical and Showstopper.

TROLLS | NOVEMBER 6 With an A-List line-up, featuring Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick, Russell Brand and James Corden, this film is set to be a hit. Trolls follows the adventures of Princess Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and grumpy troll Branch (Justin Timberlake) after the Troll Town’s population is kidnapped by the Bergens. Be prepared for a fresh nonstop comedy as we follow the story of a bunch of overly optimistic trolls.

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM | NOVEMBER 18 It’s 1926 in New York, Newt Scamander arrives in search of extraordinary magical creatures on his global quest as a magizoologist, but his short stopover is extended after some of his magic beasts escape across the wizarding world. J.K. Rowling’s prequel to the spellbinding Harry Potter series discovers the history and adventures behind Scamander, played by Academy Award-winner Eddie Redmayne.

On paper, it seems like your average cookery competition, but it’s so much more than that. From the inappropriate humour of co-hosts Mel and Sue to the piercing scrutiny of Paul Hollywood’s deep blue eyes across the tent, GBBO has managed to keep the nation wanting more for six years. So, why do we seem to love it so much? Well, quite simply because it represents everything it means to be British. We can relate to the meltdowns, imperfections and stress-induced tears that everyday life throws at us, proving that sometimes things have to fall apart before they can fall back together. Most importantly, GBBO is real as this relatable bunch of bakers prove that at the end of the day, all you can do is try your best. Words: Jade Woodhouse

Style

Black is the New Black Have you ever considered the impact colour has on your everyday life? Words: James Tissiman

s many of us know, trends shift constantly; one minute we’re wearing plaid then next it’s all about keeping it simple. However, there is one trend that seems to effortlessly migrate through the seasons. This trend can be adapted to suit all budgets, professions, shapes and sizes. What is this trend, I hear you ask? Well, it’s simply an all-black attire. Right now, you might be conjuring up images of Goths in long black leather jackets, pale faces and fishnet tops, and I wouldn’t blame you; however, wearing an all-black ensemble can be beneficial and stylish. Follow me as I provide you with the facts, figures and sane advice on how to adopt this trend or simply think more about the different colours you wear day-to-day. Over the years there have been numerous studies about colour and how it makes us feel when we wear or we see it. Some of you may be familiar with ‘The white-coat effect’; an investigation of the influence that physicians attire has on a patient. This study showed that people feel a certain level of trust and authority when instructed by those wearing a white coat. But what about black? In a recent study involving 1,000 volunteers, black was the one colour that came in either first or second place for most positive qualities and personality traits. Apparently, when we see someone in black we also see a confident, attractive and intellectual person - now what could be wrong with that? Personal experiences have also led me to believe that when I am conversing with someone in all black attire, I instantly listen to what they have

A

Alexander Wang x H&M

72

to say. My eyes are drawn to their face and not confused or distracted by any other colour or pattern. This ‘theory’ of mine (and I’d like to stress the word ‘theory’) could prove successful in a job interview or any other occasion where you feel a need to be an authority figure. Now, I want you to think about your wardrobe, what is the prominent colour you tend to wear? Do you tend to don a mass of print and colour? Perhaps you’ve never strayed too far from the usual blues, browns and greys? Or, like me, you’ve a

sea of black and white cascading from your wardrobe. What does the colour of your wardrobe say about you? Even though I class myself as a ‘man of style’, I do tend to only wear monochromatic attire. But I think that to be a true ‘man of style’ you can take just one colour (that in fact isn’t really a colour) and make it stylish. So how am I going to convince you? Let me explain the ins and outs, ups and downs of how black can be the only colour you wear and you’ll still look stylish.

Style

Proportions

Y-3 Hooded poncho, Harvey Nichols, £845

Black allows you to play around with proportions. Why? Because you are creating a true silhouette in black, you can fool the eyes of onlookers to believe that you are any shape you want to be. Perhaps you’re embarrassed by your skinny legs but proud of your bulky upper arms, you can quite easily manipulate your silhouette to best show-off your assets and hide other areas of your body. If you want to take it one step further you can exaggerate certain areas of your body and create new silhouettes for a more androgynous look.

Black to Basics

Black staples are always sharp. If you want to stand out in a basic plain T-shirt and tailored trousers, black is the only way to go. The look is dramatic, clean-cut and very sharp indeed. You’ll definitely attract attention at any occasion and never look underdressed.

ADYN Wrap jacket, Harvey Nichols, £125

Know Your Fabrics

Smart Sportswear Black sportswear is never too casual. Grey, loose fitting sweatpants have a distinct pyjama look in my eyes, however, black sweatpants I would expect to see at a smart casual occasion. When paired with the right top and if they are slightly tailored to the ankle, you have a clean-cut look that gets my approval.

It’s important to mix fabrics to make the look more three dimensional. Leather and wool, for example, go great together and the different surface textures will help accentuate different areas of the body or add light and shade.

Accessories

The devil is always in the detail which is why accessorising is a key component to really nailing this look. I prefer minimalistic jewellery in silver or gold, however, you can incorporate leathers or coloured fabric accessories. Jewellery has the power to really change an outfit and I don’t see many men using it to its full potential. Before you go out, make sure you take a couple of minutes to think through what watch you’ll wear that day or whether you can get away with adding jewellery.

ZARA Backpack, £49.99 North Wild Watch, Harvey Nichols, £229

If you’re still worried about looking like a Goth, do your own research. Pinterest is a great place for bloggers and designers to showcase their outfits and you’ll find a wealth of different styles to adopt. Just because I’m asking you to wear black, doesn’t mean I want you to be boring or lose yourself in your wardrobe. Perhaps you choose to only wear this combination occasionally, at least you’ll have an informed decision to head out into the world. 73

Talk

The Roman Invasion In two years Roman Kemp has gone from cleaning equipment at his local gym to becoming the digital presenter of The Xtra Factor. We caught up with the Capital FM DJ to talk all things X Factor, interviewing Jennifer Lawrence and his career highlights

Words: Becky Weaver 74

Talk

oman Kemp is no stranger to the world of showbiz; son of Spandau Ballet’s Martin Kemp and Wham! star Shirlie Holliman, he’s quite the talent having dabbled in modelling - he’s featured in campaigns for Topman and ASOS - signing to Universal Records at the age of 15 and working with Adidas before he was headhunted by Capital FM following the success of his YouTube channel, Pitch Invasion TV. At 23 he’s built a solid career and is rapidly becoming one of the most well-known names in the entertainment industry.

R

Joining The Xtra Factor

It was an incredible feeling, it’s funny because two years ago I spoke to my friends and they said: “where do you want to be in five years?” And I said ‘Xtra Factor’. So I’m already three years ahead of time! I instantly felt at home. It’s a show I’ve always watched so in some way I already knew everyone and I knew how the show worked. There’s always that ‘new kid at school’ feeling but that quickly passes. I never really get nervous with work, it’s just pure excitement and gratitude for the position that I’m in.

Working with The X Factor Crew

On my first day at X Factor I was awkwardly stood in the dressing room watching Dermot and all the judges chat and have banter between one another, and I just stood to the side, but then one by one they all came over and introduced themselves and knew my name! It was

the strangest thing ever that Simon and Dermot knew who I was. Everyone is just so incredibly cool and welcoming. Dermot is the best person I’ve ever worked with, and someone that I look up to. I’m like a sponge around him, and he’s always looking to help me, whether that be letting me watch how he prepares scripts or standing with him off camera. It’s incredible to see someone so professional. I’d go as far as saying it’s the best working relationship I’ve ever had with Rylan and Matt, we all really trust each other on screen. They are so good at what they do, I just bounce off them constantly. We all hang out before and after each show. Matt’s an incredible magician and creator of crazy games so we’re never bored and Rylan is Rylan; there’s never a dull moment. We’re like a weird little family. They’re my TV mum and dad.

Filming Judges’ Houses

It was so tough, probably more than it was watching on TV. So many emotions in such a short space of time, you really see

how much this means to the contestants. It was a strange experience but amazing.

Starting at Capital FM

It was actually a happy accident. I was brought in by Richard Park and Rich Steele to do some outside broadcasts for the Capital Breakfast Show, after doing a couple they asked me to do a show demo just for fun. Then all of a sudden I was pulled into a meeting and offered a show; it all happened very quickly.

Finding the Balance Between Radio and TV

I was doing TV bits before I started at Capital, but what Capital has done is shown me my true personality, who I really am as a broadcaster. So the two (radio & TV) compliment one another so well. Capital being live every day means that the word LIVE is just a regular thing. I’ve now got myself into a position where I work seven days a week 10am-10pm, it’s tough. I’m building a career for myself and I’m just constantly wanting 75

Talk

to learn, whether that’s from working with different producers/ directors to being placed in certain situations; it’s all so helpful to my learning process.

Roman’s Career Highlights

My first live show on Capital and my first live show for The Xtra Factor. I will always remember those moments. Every day I feel like I’m in some weird dream, it’s a fun job. I’ve gone through an incredible past two years that started with me cleaning equipment in my local gym to me having the number one commercial radio show in the UK and working with Simon Cowell.

Embarrassing On Air Moments

My job is to embarrass myself in front of beautiful and incredibly talented people every day. It’s a strange day if I’m not making a fool out of myself. It’s always difficult to pinpoint a moment but having to interview Jennifer Lawrence and show her a tattoo (it was fake) of her face on my chest was a low point. Whenever I have a crush on someone it’s difficult embarrassing myself!

Fashion Inspiration

‘ I’m building a career for myself and I’m just constantly wanting to learn’ 76

Everything that’s coming out of LA at the moment is amazing, I wear lots of Mr Completely, 424 and MISBHV. They’re leading the movement of design in my opinion. Creators like Virgil Abloh & Jerry Lorenzo are basically dictating what is cool, but they also are leading of movement of customisation to clothing which I love. Most of my shopping is done online; I live on farfetch.com.

Key Winter Wardrobe Pieces Big half-zip overcoats. They look so great, I’ve seen some of the new designs from Fear of God, Yeezy and 424 and they just look amazing. I wear Vans every day and winter means it’s time for a warmer version so the high tops come out a lot. Long draping knitted jumpers are great for winter too, I just copped an amazing piece from MISBHV that I’m obsessed with.

Your definitive guide to winter coats

Let the high street hunt begin! It’s time to wrap up in this season’s must-have coats Words: James Tissiman

entlemen; it’s time to get serious about your winter attire. I’m here to give you some inside information on the styles, colour and materials that you need to keep an eye out for when you’re on the hunt for that trusty coat to see you through the coming months.

G

Currently, the city is buzzing with new collections ready for us to sink our teeth into. Whether you’re looking to purchase a staple overcoat or something with a touch more style and panache, the big city has everything you need to achieve style righteousness. Throughout this article, I’ll be outlining the trends and giving you some of my top picks from the Birmingham high street. So stay with me and make notes.

1.Make a statement

If blending into the landscape is your idea of a fashion nightmare, then fear not, statement coats are huge this year. With the wealth of designs available, you can really let yourself go and have some fun with the different cuts, prints and colour combinations available. I’ve chosen this coat from Harvey Nichols, however, many high street brands have adopted the trend to suit all budgets.

2. Military

The military look is still going strong and I can’t see it going out of fashion anytime soon. Therefore, my advice is to invest in one that will stand the test of time, buy with quality in mind and it’ll last you a lifetime. If you’re looking for a quick fix, however, I would choose a more tailored military look inspired by Alexander McQueen’s regal twist.

3. Full-bodied colours

As with every season, it’s a custom to reflect our surroundings and winter has one of the most robust palettes of the year. From burnt orange to cardinal red, earthy brown to boozy berry, the landscape is awash with inspiration and this season the designers have done us proud with outerwear that celebrates this season’s opulence.

4. Practical pockets

C’mon guys, let’s admit it; we do like to have a practical element to our clothes. We can’t just go around in winter in a

6

2

Jaeger Navy suede jacket, £375 ADYN Military bomber, £320

flimsy jacket without pockets to cram all of our gadgets into. So if you’re a practical man like me, you’re in luck. This season we’ve seen some great winter warmers packed full of interesting pockets; some large, some small and some a little bit asymmetric and random. It’s all about practicality but be careful you’re not swamped in them.

3

4

YMC Black cargo jacket, £99 Topman Burnt orange duster coat, £200

5. E - street duffel

Characterised by the classic toggle fastening, duffel coats are back in fashion and Paddington Bear better keep his hands off. For a must-have buy that incorporates the previous colour trend and this style, I’ve managed to source this 5 patch duffel coat from Zara; it’s tailored yet has a preppy feel with the patchwork lettering and emblem.

6.Suede is the only way

It seems as if the 70s suede trend is still at large, however, this season we’ve seen it featured mainly on coats. Whether it’s a subtle patch or an all-over constructed coat made from suede, this is the hot-right-now coat of the season. The great thing about suede is that it makes a statement (another key trend as mentioned above), as well as having a distinctly vintage feel - particularly if you’re looking to sport a shearling coat.

ZARA Patch duffle coat, £119

1

The only advice that I would give is to make sure you purchase a suede protector for those Rick Owens Black rainy days; it’ll keep paint splash denim coat, £2,025, your jacket looking Harvey Nichols great throughout the winter and many more to come. If you’re hunting for one around the city, try John Lewis or the iconic All Saints for a top notch leather jacket that’ll last. You can even try one of our many vintage shops if you’re looking for something original. 83

Tech

Pebble Time From £100

Pebble was one of the first ever smart watch brands; it broke records when it became the fastest Kickstarter project to receive $1million in funding, and went on to become the crowdsourcing platform’s most-backed product. The Pebble Time is a more affordable option if you’re new to wearables and don’t want to splash out on an Apple or Polar product.

Get Smart

The wearable technology that’s weaving its way into your wardrobe

Fitbit Flex 2 From £79.99

Words: Philip Ellis

Snapchat is the latest tech giant venturing into wearable devices, recently announcing Snapchat Spectacles; connected eyewear which enables the user to take a photo or record up to 10 seconds of video. These will be rolling out soon at £100 a pop — pretty pricey for what amounts to a toy. But there’s so much more to wearable tech than mere novelty. Google’s Project Jacquard intends to turn any piece of fabric into a connected device, and other companies are exploring the possibilities of electro-conductive ink in ‘tech tattoos’. It won’t be long before smartphones are redundant, and we’re staying connected through clothing that is truly smart. In the meantime, here’s our rundown of the best current wearable tech…

S

If you’re looking for a sports watch with fewer bells and whistles, it’s hard to go wrong with Fitbit; it was the biggest selling wearable device last year. The Fitbit Flex 2, which is slimmer and lighter than previous models, tracks the number of steps taken, calories burned, and active minutes in your daily routine.

Nuzzle Collar Pre-Order From £150

There are even wearables for your pets. This connected collar equips your cat or dog with a GPS tracker, meaning that if they ever run off, you can find them using your smartphone.

Apple Watch Series 2 From £369

Lumo Run £80

Simply attach this thumb-sized smart tracker to the back of your running shorts; the device analyses your running form and offers customised coaching tips via a free app, to help you beat your personal best. 84

One of the biggest obstacles to mainstream adaptation of smart accessories has been making them look remotely stylish. So it makes sense that Apple is the company leading the design charge with its sleek watch offering. Big improvements on this latest iteration include a brighter screen, Force Touch which makes navigating the small display easier, and a dual-core processor that’s now 50% faster. It’s also waterproof at up to 50 metres. And if you want to really stand out, then there are special editions by Nike+ and Hermès.

Home HIIT Routines

Even though winter is here there’s no need to let the cold weather impact your regular workout routine. You can easily work up a sweat at home, just as much as you can when visiting the gym with these effective exercises Words: Charlotte Smith

Pulse Up

1

3 sets of 10-20 reps Lie on your back and bring your hands to the floor either side of you, raise your legs up, keeping them as straight as possible until you reach a 90 degree angle. Pulse upwards by lifting your hips up slightly and pause before slowly lowering for that chiselled, toned appearance.

Bird Dog

2

3 sets of 10 reps Position yourself onto all fours and raise one arm ahead of you until it is straight while lifting up the opposing leg to the same degree behind you. Hold this stance for a couple of seconds before lowering both in a controlled manner. Repeat the exact same for the opposite side and continue for defined abs. 3

Tricep Dips

3 sets of 15 reps Turn your sofa in to a workbench and challenge your arms in a simple yet proficient way. Sit on the edge of your sofa with your hands clutching the edge, fingers facing forward, and dip your body down until the base of your glutes is nearly touching the floor. With your elbows bent and your legs in front of you, knees directly above your heels, lift yourself back up and repeat the step again for firm arms. 4

Oblique Twist

3 sets of 20-30 reps To work your obliques and core muscles, lay down and place your hands behind your head. Bring your right elbow to your left knee, twisting your middle section and leaning forward slightly so your abs contract, before returning back to the upright position. Follow these same steps for the opposite side and continue to repeat, building up speed slowly.

espite being at the centre of the UK and holding its status as the second biggest city, Birmingham’s potential is often dismissed. However, with recent changes and substantial developments, the city has gradually become a more desirable place to live, with more and more people leaving the bright lights of London to settle down in the place that gave the world the Balti, Black Sabbath and the Bullring. It’s no secret that living here is significantly cheaper than London and with recent figures highlighting how Birmingham is now the most popular place to move from the capital, it’s evident that perceptions about it are changing. Having grown up in Birmingham my whole life and choosing to study here for university, I think it’s safe to say that I have a well-rounded view of the evolution of the city across the past decade. Although I’ve never lived anywhere but Birmingham, I can only imagine moving back to it after time away during the past few years would be a shock to the system. From the rise of popularity in areas such as Digbeth and Moseley, to more drastic changes architecturally, it’s now rightfully being celebrated as a culturally diverse hub of opportunity. After visiting the University of Birmingham campus on its open day, there was no doubt in my mind where I’d be applying to undertake my undergraduate course. With its leafy, green lawns and striking architecture, I was pleasantly surprised by the beauty of a campus in contrast to the concrete jungles that I’d previously visited. Despite living just a 15 minute drive from the campus itself, this was the first of many hidden gems I was yet to discover in Birmingham in the years to come. All of this, in a city so commonly referred to as a bit of a dive. The New York Times recently wrote that ‘Birmingham is no longer simply flyover country’, urging people to visit the ‘heartland metropolis’ of ‘big-shouldered, friendly and fun’ people, and I personally couldn’t agree more. Now more than ever, Birmingham’s importance to the UK is being confirmed. Being a student in Birmingham allowed me to rediscover a city that I knew and loved. From the edible delights of Digbeth Dining Club to carefully crafted cocktails at The Botanist and hearty brunch at The Plough in Harborne.

Birmingham is a thriving and vibrant place to live, work and dine. Since then, I’ve been repeatedly amazed by what it has to offer and as New Street Station gradually disappeared, so did the common misconception that the only thing Birmingham has to offer is an undesirable accent. Just a few years ago, Michelin star restaurants in Birmingham were unheard of and now with more Michelin stars than any other English city outside of London, Birmingham’s culinary scene is bursting with potential. Recent years have proved that we have way more to offer than just Balti Triangle, as top chefs such as Glynn Purnell and Adam Stokes have reinvented Birmingham’s fine dining scene. As a Brummie himself, Glynn Purnell’s innovative menu and contemporary taste at restaurant Purnell’s has brought visitors from all across the country to the heart of the city to enjoy a tantalising dining experience like no other. With certain chain restaurants cropping up over most main cities in the UK, the success of home-grown, independent restaurants within Birmingham is a great way to celebrate all the city has to offer. As well as iconic attractions such as Cadbury World, Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre and Symphony Hall remaining to represent the city’s fundamental heritage, Birmingham has opened its arms to an array of exciting ventures over the past few years including the £50 million refurbishment to the Mailbox. Bringing a taste of luxury to the city centre, the Mailbox boasts a host of new designer stores such as Paul Smith and Calvin Klein. Following in the footsteps of London, the opening of Everyman Cinema last year means that filmgoers can enjoy an experience like no other, with sofas to relax on and a food service whereby burgers and cocktails can be brought directly to your seat during the film; what’s not to love? And speaking of films, just a few months ago following the success of BBC Two’s Peaky Blinders series, Birmingham was transformed into the set of Steven Spielberg’s Hollywood blockbuster Ready Player One. In the same way, the Black Country Living Museum was

hand in hand with traffic restrictions and a confusing one-way system, the outdated Paradise Circus building has disappeared to reveal a new perspective of the city. Having walked through Paradise Circus uncountable times, it feels strange to see a place so familiar to me look so dramatically different. Alongside the £600 million redevelopments to Birmingham’s main train station, the additional £150 million towards the brand spanking new Grand Central Birmingham which allows visitors to revel at the exciting range of shops, restaurants and cafés. As if this wasn’t enough, a recent extension of the tram service throughout the city centre has brought a more frequent and reliable travel option. Whether you’re hopping on for the daily commute or saving your legs after a long day of shopping, the tram is an affordable and accessible choice. With its quick and simple ‘pay as you go’ system, fumbling around for spare change has fast become a thing of the past as the foundations of Birmingham’s high-tech future are being built. With Visit Birmingham reporting that more than 40% of Birmingham’s population is made up of under 25-year-olds, it’s clear that more people are making the choice to build a life in an up-and-coming alternative to the over-priced and over-crowded lifestyle of London. For me, Birmingham is the best of both worlds. From state of the art venues to prosperous business opportunities and years of an unfair reputation behind us it’s finally our time to shine, as Birmingham’s status as the ‘second city’ no longer means we’re second best.

Birmingham Museums

transformed into 1920’s Birmingham for gangster series Peaky Blinders, Spielberg used the streets of Digbeth and the Jewellery Quarter for his new sci-fi thriller. At the time, there was a buzz surrounding the city, as Birmingham was finally being acknowledged - by Spielberg of all people - as a diverse and desirable location to create new work. Despite being just over an hour away from London on the train, it seems strange that this realisation within TV and film is only just happening, with the streets of Birmingham flying the flag for the city’s heritage. Nevertheless, the recent interest in media opportunities within the city merely exemplifies how Birmingham’s creative potential is reaching new heights whilst placing us firmly on the map. However, it can’t be ignored that the new Library of Birmingham has brought a substantial amount of interest, regardless of its controversial reception and drastic cuts in opening hours. With Visit Birmingham stating that the amount of people obtaining a library membership had ‘increased significantly, with a 140% rise in people joining’ in the first year alone; the Library of Birmingham has brought culture back to the forefront of the city. In a generation of the Kindle and eBooks, the resurgence of interest in a public library is somewhat refreshing, as figures further highlight how more than two million people visited the building in its first year. Just a stone’s throw away from the Library of Birmingham, the demolition of the Central Library over the past few months has contributed drastically to the ever-changing silhouette of the city. Although this comes

In a city that’s ever-changing it’s always a shock to look back and see just how far Birmingham has come. From stunning architecture to embracing cultural diversity, we should be proud of everything it has achieved over the years. If you’re looking to get your culture fix Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is currently showing two exhibitions, which we recommend you go take a look at if you’re really want to immerse yourself in the history of our beautiful city. Birmingham People and Change in the Inner-City both opened back in August. Filled with oil paintings, photographs, and film as well as sculpture from the fine art and history collection, Birmingham People looks at the ways in which ordinary people from the city have be represented during the 20th and 21st centuries. Change in the Inner-City gives you an insight as to how the urban landscape of Birmingham and its surrounding areas including Ladywood, Soho and Aston, have blossomed over the years. After numerous sites were obliterated during the Second World War, the people of Birmingham had no choice but to build a new life for themselves, which resulted in roads such as the Aston Expressway being built in 1967, which has now become a major entry and exit road for the city. This collection includes topographical material from the fine art and history collection.

The Weekend Break, Mastered! The city break is well and truly back. With European destinations within touching distance we hopped over to the Spanish capital Madrid to see how to spend a weekend in style without feeling exhausted!

A

s an avid fan of cultural breaks I’m always looking for ways to get the most out of my time off whilst still feeling relaxed after a working week; so usually the thought of going abroad for a weekend would result in an instant ‘for a weekend?! No chance’. However, I recently canned my scepticism and headed to the picturesque city of Madrid for a quick getaway for two. A city of breathtaking boulevards, grand palatial spaces and manicured public gardens, it has the third largest population in Europe so you can guarantee there’s a huge amount to do and see. Flying from Birmingham Airport we had touched down within an hour and had began our trip towards the city. Our home for the weekend the chic, understated Hotel One Shot 96 | Style Birmingham | Winter 2016

Recoletos. Located just off the Paseo del Prado, right in the centre of town, it was within walking distance from all of the major cultural attractions that the capital has to offer. The hotel is simple with an uberminimal design; only the essentials are in the spacious rooms, making for the perfect location to truly switch off after a full day exploring the city. Each room houses hand-picked design-led furniture and artwork, bathrooms lead to indulgent waterfall showers; even the exposed storage exudes simple luxury, ensuring you can make the most out of your stay with the minimal level of fuss. That ethos rings true even into the main areas of the hotel - take any of the lifts to the main entrance and you’ll find a calendar of the week’s events scribed across the walls just in case you were stuck finding something to do.

A WORK OF ART

Those wanting to immerse themselves in history, art and architecture Madrid is the perfect place. Start your trip by getting into the thick of it – exploring the streets will lead you to the Plaza Mayor. Surrounded with classical architecture, local shops and cafés, this plaza has been host to a vast amount of events, including bullfights and football matches. A short walk from the centre of town is the Museum Thyssen-Bournemisza. Opened in 1992 it is home to the private collections

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD

Anyone interested in experiencing local culture knows the best way to do so is with a great meal. The culinary scene in Madrid is pleasantly contrasted, much like other capital cities, you’ll find great epicurean hot spots loved by locals and tourists alike, as well as hidden treasures enjoyed only by those in the know. Restaurant Ana La Santa offers many styles of food. Try a selection of small plates from the tapas menu and share with a bottle of wine by recommendation of the waiter – you won’t be disappointed. Another culinary delight is the beautiful Palacio Cibeles Restaurant. Located on the sixth floor of the Palacio de Cibeles, the rooftop terrace allows visitors to enjoy truly unique cuisine created by head chef Adolfo Muños with views across the city. The menu changes regularly in a reflection to the creativity of the kitchen, we were lucky enough to experience a menu dedicated to a celebration of the elements. The five course taster menu costs €49.50. For anyone looking for something a little more personal, you can’t get more intimate than learning how traditional sangria and paella are made. Restaurente El Arrozal and owner Juan Antonio offers just that, book the experience with Insiders Madrid for €70 per person to include the class, paella and sangria lunch served with alioli and tostadas followed by dessert (insidersmadrid.com).

of Baron Thyssen (a Spanish industrialist and art collector) and of Carmen ThyssenBornemisza (a Spanish philanthropist, socialite and art collector). For anyone interested in art the Thyssen is the perfect place to lose yourself for hours in works from the likes of Salvador Dalí, Vincent van Gogh and Pablo Picasso. A short stroll from the Thyssen will bring you into the museum district of Madrid, here you can find the world famous Museo Del Prado, home to one of the world’s finest collections of European art, dating from the 12th century to the early 20th century. The area is also home to the Casa Museo Lope de Vega, a great choice for anyone interested in period furniture and artworks. Sometimes all that sightseeing can be a little tiring. Parque del Retiro, one of Madrid’s largest 19th century parks at 350 acres, is located just behind the Prado museum and is the perfect way to relax. There’s a beautiful boating lake where you can hire a small rowing boat and soak up the sun in front of the huge colonnade and statue of King Alfonzo XII. Alternatively, why not visit the rose garden housing the Fountain of the Falling Angel, the Palacio de Cristal. After you’ve gained a bit more energy there are another two museums inside the park too.

TIME TO RECUPERATE

If you plan the trip right you can make the return journey feeling rested. Use the first day of your trip to visit the museums, visit two restaurants, one for lunch and one for dinner. Finally, rest! Enjoy the hotel, one thing many of us forget to do. Breakfast at Hotel One Shot is a healthy mix of continental fruits and meats along with a selection of sweet treats and strong coffee. Make your first stop here in the morning, and leave your bags with concierge before heading out for your final day. The two stops on your list for your final day have to be La Casa Encendida (Madrid’s social and cultural centre) and Rastro (the oldest street market in the city). La Casa is a hotspot of groundbreaking artistic expressions as well as hosting educational, philosophical and debating activities. The centre works as a public space for locals to learn, create and socialise with film screenings, concerts and exhibitions. Grab a quick bite to eat in the café and then head up to the roof terrace and visit the rooftop gardens, it’s a truly relaxing experience. Finally before you head back a short walk will bring you to Madrid’s oldest market street Rastro. The El Rastro Market is the most popular open air flea market in Madrid and is held every Sunday. Full of antique stalls and shops, as well as contemporary design boutiques; there really is something for everyone. Spend your final hours exploring hidden treasures before making the short flight back home in time for dinner. Parque del Retiro
