ARM KANDY

Go wild in the country. Rock the wildlife trend with these gorgeous and witty fox earrings, £10 from Freedom at Topshop.
If you can’t wear glitter and gold at Christmas, when can you? Jimmy Choo lights up party month with the most beautiful bag of the year: £875, at Harvey Nichols.
3.
If these rococo beauties from Office, £70, don’t get you noticed at the New Year bash, there’s no hope for womankind. Expect the hidden platform to give you a real lift...
It could be Vivienne Westwood, but look closer and you’ll see the label says Dorothy Perkins. This sexy, tailored dress has a much more budget-friendly price of £50 too.

Add this understated silver blazer to dresses, tees, jeans: it’s the most versatile piece of the season, and a snip at just £49 from Miss Selfridge.
Tricky to wear, maybe, but the cape is the key piece of winter and oh-so-chic. Take your orders from the military capes seen on the catwalks at Vuitton, Valentino and Alexander McQueen.
8.
We can’t get enough of the ankle boot trend. Easy to wear, and they go with everything from party dresses to skinny jeans: what’s not to love? This unusual pair is £55 from Wallis.
10. 9. issue 31
1. If you buy only one piece of jewellery this winter, make it a statement ring. Cocktail rings evolve into showpieces for party season: we love the pretty rose gold charm on this one, £65 by Folli Follie in Selfridges.
With embellishment still topping the fashion agenda, a beaded and bejewelled dress is a fabulous choice for parties. This Sixties-inspired one, £249 from Monsoon, could be vintage Biba.
It’s all about the slim, streamlined silhouette for winter coats, with Russianstyle greatcoats and maxi-length wrap coats featuring on most-wanted lists. The clean lines and Ali McGraw 70s styling of this trenchcoat, £95 at Next, have stolen our hearts.

SHADES ON This time of year, it’s easy to throw on a uniform of all black, and head out the door. Don’t cut colour out of your midwinter wardrobe: now’s the ideal time to cheer yourself up with a colour injection. H&M has gone big on this idea with a new collection positively oozing vibrant, but wearable colour. In store now.

I’ve been a fan of Andy Warhol’s work since…well, forever, it feels like! His artistic point of view has been so informative in my work: as a makeup artist, then a photographer, and as someone who’s built a brand around an art form. His influence is threaded through the DNA of NARS in other ways as well. Fabien Baron, who is the editorial director of Interview magazine – which, of course Andy founded – designed the NARS logo. I like to think there’s always been a connection between our work. My favourite work of art by Andy is reflected in this new collection. His silk screens are of course totally iconic, so their influence is everywhere. We were even able to match several shades to colours from his paintings. But we captured so much more than what he put on a canvas. Andy did so many things in his life –
issue 31
film, magazines, TV, painting, performance – his spirit is everywhere in this collection. For the party season, this is the perfect collection. The Eyeshadow Palettes (£39.50) are amazing, very Warhol-esque. I’ve never seen anything like them before. Andy’s quotes on the mirrors tie in with beauty so perfectly: I couldn’t not include them. The bold colours Andy used in his work seem to impact not just this, but all your collections. Colour is so important to me when creating a look. I like colours that are honest: I think that the shade you see in the pan or the tube is how the colour should appear on your face, so I’m always pushing our chemists to add more pigment. That’s why I love the saturated colours Warhol used in his work - reds, blues, yellows. He was so unafraid to be bold. Any of the collection would make a great gift. I think the Silver Factory gift collection (£150) is the perfect
present for anyone who’s a fan of beauty, art, or pop culture. There’s a silver cosmetics bag that is just so great. All of the packaging is amazing: we used a film canister for the Edie gift set (£54), a soup can that holds Kiss. It’s all so much fun. The holiday season is the perfect time to experiment with makeup. The colours in the new Soft Touch Shadow Pencils (£17) are seductive and fun, with shades like vivid purple, silver, and teal. A bright nail and an iridescent eye feels festive and sexy right now. Bold shades are wonderful for winter. I don’t think women should be afraid of bright colours. This collection is confident, graphic, and I hope women embrace that. That said, making a look work is about finding a balance. Pair a bold lip with a lighter eye, or go the other way around. PiccOliNO Bar Manager at Piccolino, Tom Boucher puts his modern, Italian spin on the classic Sazerac.
Often referred to as the oldest known American cocktail, bar manager at Piccolino, Tom Boucher brings us the Sazerac; an alcoholic preparation steeped in history, originating from 19th century New Orleans. Tom takes the classic cocktail to South Europe by adding to the mix Tuaca, a complementary and little known brandy based liqueur from Tuscany, with notes of vanilla and citrus. The Italian Sazerac serves as the perfect pre or post-dinner drink or nightcap, and being a seasonal Piccolino creation, it’s ideal for kick starting the festive drinking season!
ingredients
method:
25ml Tuaca
Fill a rocks glass with ice and water and put to one side. Add a few drops of water, both bitters, and a tea spoon of Demerara sugar into mixing glass and mix until the sugar is in solution. Add 25ml of Tuaca and 25ml of Cognac (the finer the better). Fill the glass with ice and stir for 30 seconds. Take the rocks glass and discard the ice and water. Add a dash of absinthe into the chilled glass to lace and then discard. Strain contents of mixing glass into the rocks glass and garnish with a lemon twist.
25ml Remy Martin VSOP 3 dashes Peychauds bitters 2 dashes Angostura bitters 1 bar spoon Demerara sugar 10ml Absinthe 10ml water 1 Lemon

Duelling Pianos makes uk Debut in birmingHam A US-style bar has opened its doors to British revelers for the first time, occupying the former premises of The Living Room in Birmingham’s buzzing Broad Street. Duelling Pianos bar and eatery officially opened on November 1, and is set to be a cut above the rest. Thanks to the presence of two grand pianos, customers can request music of their choice and set the tone for their evening out. Owners Simon Toller and pianist Robbie Peaple hope to bring the vibe witnessed in similar venues across the pond to the UK, choosing Birmingham as their preferred location over potential venues in London, Manchester and Brighton. If you fancy a night out with a difference, call 0121 695 9206 or visit www.duellingpianobars.co.uk/ for more information.
Hot Jazz in cHinatown Hot Jazz, Cool Blues and Chinese food all under one roof? If you think it couldn’t happen, you couldn’t be more wrong. Based in the heart of Birmingham’s Chinatown, Chung Ying Garden Cantonese Restaurant brings you an eclectic mix of musical and culinary delight, as it opens its doors to a host of live Jazz and Cool Blues bands on Fridays and Saturdays. A twin trend that emerged in the 1950s, with the legendary Manzi’s Club in Brighton attracting Jazz fans with eager Eastern taste buds, Chung Ying in conjunction with the Birmingham Jazz Music Festival promises to recreate some of that retro magic. Showtime is 8pm, and entry is free for diners. For more information and show listings, visit www.chungying.co.uk or call 0121 666 6622.

STYLE LOVES To celebrate its 200th birthday, Champagne Laurent-Perrier has launched a very special limited edition prestige cuvee, Les Réserves Grand Siècle. At an eye-watering £2,400 (Selfridges), it’s very much a collector’s edition, but if you’re looking for Christmas gift ideas…
You’ll need:
What to do:
For the muffins:
Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas 4, line a 12 hole muffin tray with cases. In a saucepan , add the golden syrup, black treacle, butter, dark brown sugar, stem ginger and both ground spices. Warm gently until butter and sugar have melted. Purée the beetroot in a food processor, and blend with the eggs, milk and bicarbonate of soda. Once the butter and sugar have melted, take the saucepan off the heat and add the milk, eggs and beetroot. Sieve the flour into a large mixing bowl and beat in the wet ingredients until they are smooth – batter will be quite runny. Fill the muffin cases with the batter – this is easier if you use a jug – and bake in the preheated oven until firm but springy to the touch. Be careful not to overcook the muffins. Remove from the tin and allow to cool on a rack. Whilst the muffins are cooling make the icing by beating all the ingredients to a smooth paste. Drizzle over the muffins when they are completely cold. These muffins keep really well for a few days in an airtight tin.
200g golden syrup 200g black treacle 150g unsalted butter 125g dark brown sugar 100g stem ginger, cut into fine dice 4tsp ground ginger 2tsp ground cinnamon 250g pack cooked beetroot 250ml milk 2 medium eggs, beaten
OWN IT
Don’t be snobbish about own-label wines, Waitrose has re-launched its wine, beer and spirit selection with some very fine bottles indeed. New labels clearly describe the taste, so you’ll find it easy to choose the right one (and some start at under £5).
1tsp bicarbonate of soda 300g plain flour
For the icing: Zest 1 lemon, plus 1tbs juice 150g icing sugar

No queuing with the ‘normal’ people; we got straight into the venue, which was ideal considering the storm taking place outside. With smiles on their faces and some light Friday evening conversation, the team took our coats and showed us into the Air Restaurant, which is their top level of hospitality. We had barely sat down when our waitress for the evening started filling our glasses with Veuve Clicquot (now this is what we’re talking about!) The restaurant was buzzing; full of excited groups of girls – we saw birthday and hen celebrations – business people and couples. Despite being the top level of hospitality, it had a great ‘air’ about it (excuse the pun) and felt relaxed and informal despite being top quality. Once settled, our waitress returned with some warm homemade bread and explained the concept of Air; tapasstyle starters and desserts, accompanied by a main course of our choice, cheese and of course unlimited drinks. We could be forgiven for forgetting that we were actually here to see Cheryl.
issue 31
We were taken up to the starter bar to choose from the fantastic selection of miniature dishes. The menu, which changes seasonally and alters from show-to-show, included a salad of goats’ cheese, poached pear and toasted pine nuts, hummus, ham hock terrine with a punchy tomato pickle, baby red pepper filled with cream cheese, chicken and herb parfait and smoked salmon on blinis with lemon and dill mascarpone. Always indecisive, this type of starter was perfect for people that want a little bit of everything. Then came the main courses, which were prepared in the open plan kitchen that sits at the heart of the restaurant. The offering could rival some of the city’s best fine dining restaurants, with dishes including five spiced and honey roasted breast of duck, chilli and coriander sweet potato wedge, bok choi, shitake mushrooms and blood orange sauce, and seared monkfish medallions, saffron fondant potato, sugar snap peas, asparagus, mussel and clam broth. There was also a very tasty vegetarian option of wild mushroom risotto, chargrilled butternut squash with parmesan crackling and toasted pine nuts. However, the most popular dish was the rib eye steak with chunky chips, flat mushroom, grilled tomato and beer battered onion rings, complete with béarnaise or peppercorn sauce.
style social
The steak arrived and was cooked to absolute perfection, much to our delight. Oh, and did we mention the salad bar of tossed mixed salad, pesto croutons and shaved parmesan, Moroccan spiced couscous and feta, and rice, lentil and pancetta? Throughout the meal the drinks kept flowing and despite seeing a healthy selection of spirits, the red wine was too good to miss out on. After the main course, we had the opportunity to head up to our seats – on the very impressive and uber-exclusive Showdeck to watch Cheryl’s support act, Tinchy Stryder. Seeing the arena full of screaming fans got us really excited for the main event and, with that in mind, we went back down to the restaurant for dessert. Usually a concert interval is spent waiting in line for food, drink or the toilet, but not when you’re with amplify. We spent the time enjoying a fantastic tapas-style dessert, consisting of tiramisu, baked New York style cheesecake, glazed mini lemon meringue tart and a mouth-watering chocolate truffle with pistachio wafer. Even better, we got to choose our own so if we didn’t like one dish, we could choose two of another instead. If only everything in life could be like this. Feeling thoroughly satisfied and undoubtedly full, we went back up to Showdeck to enjoy two hours with Cheryl. Sporting an animal print cat suit, the pint-sized star burst into the arena and performed her uber-catchy hits like ‘Call My Name’, ‘Promise This’ and latest track
65
65
‘Under The Sun’. We sang our hearts out and did our best to impersonate her (very energetic) dance moves. Put it this way, we won’t be auditioning for Diversity any time soon. Cheryl had multiple outfit changes and made her way across the stage, weaving in and out of her dancers who were doing everything from bouncing on trampolines to playing with laser lights. What a show! Even better, we didn’t have to go downstairs to get a drink; we were serviced by the unlimited bar on Showdeck. Again, another benefit of amplify was the ability to return to the restaurant after the show to enjoy one last glass of wine and a platter of cheese, biscuits and chutney. Not fighting the crowds at the end of the show just finished the night of perfectly and our parking space, right next to the venue, was even more ideal (obviously the designated driver hadn’t been enjoying the wine as much as the rest of us). As well as being a great show, we saw just how fantastic the concert experience could be. The only problem is whether we can ever attend a concert as a ‘regular’ punter again. Amplify offers three fantastic packages: from the simple upgrade including bowl food and three free drinks – Freestyle – to a four-course meal with paid bar – Club – or the full package – Air. We would, without a doubt, recommend any of these to anyone attending a show at the LG Arena or its sister venue, the NIA. To find out more about amplify, visit www.amplify.co.uk

AN EVENING HOTSPOT WITH A TASTEFUL TWIST N u vo c o c k ta i l b a r a n d l o u n g e i s t h e g o - t o p l ac e f o r g r e at f o o d i n B r i n d l e y p l ac e , d i s c ov e r s Va n e s s a A l l a n You may recognise Nuvo in Brindleyplace as a hot nightspot, a place where beautiful people gather after dark to party and that it certainly is. But have you ever considered Nuvo to be a place to enjoy a delightful dinner out? Neither had I. So when I was invited to sample their culinary menu I naturally accepted with some trepidation. On entering Nuvo you’re met by a chic and classy interior that screams glamour; shiny black granite, mirrors and subtle cerise backlighting combine to make you believe this is a special place. Our host for the evening, Sophie, certainly made us feel special and most welcome, as she showed us to a table with sumptuously comfortable leather seating - none of those fast food chairs here! We began with cocktails from the extensive cocktail menu, which boasts both classics alongside signature inventions. We chose Strawberry Haze and Silky Chestnut, both signature mixes, and were taken aback by the fabulous kick they delivered! The menu is simple, containing a good mix of fish, meat and vegetarian options. For starters I opted for bruschetta with wild mushrooms in a cream sauce and my companion chose soup of the day. Both dishes arrived beautifully presented and tasted just as good as they looked! For main course my companion opted for pork belly, (one of her favourite dishes), served with mash, bacon, mushrooms and baby onions, along with a creamy mustard sauce. After much thought I
settled on supreme of chicken breast with olive crushed potatoes, served with a medley of mushrooms in a creamy tarragon sauce. The chicken was both tender and flavoursome and the accompaniments complemented it perfectly, whilst my companion described her main as the best melt-in-the-mouth pork belly she’d ever had! For dessert we opted for sticky toffee pudding and Eton mess; both were delightful, although by this point we were struggling a little to find room for them, as the portions at Nuvo are rather generous. Nuvo Overall the meal was excellent and the 2 Brunswick Square, 11 Brindley Place Birmingham B1 2LP service both friendly and attentive, 0121 631 1600 without being overbearing. During our time there we noticed that there was a really good mix of people enjoying dinner, from the young and trendy to the not so young and trendy (like me)! Don’t be put off by the fact that Nuvo is best known as a glamorous nightspot, as I believe in the coming months it will also become known as a fabulous food destination. My compliments to the chef!

GLAS NYE
Halloween underlined what a fantastic year of parties it has been for GLAS. Completely selling out the Rainbow Warehouse on a weekday night, and with more than half of those attending later heading into the city centre in their Halloween outfits, showcased why it is one of Birmingham’s leading and most original events. No surprises the brand continues to run against the grain, but for New Year’s Eve its taking things back to basics. Past NYE parties have seen GLAS present two street festivals and a hotel party, along with the first ever NYE event at the former TRMNL venue in the Jewellery Quarter. The latter is widely regarded as one of the best parties it has ever hosted, so this year it’s looking to recreate something similar. GLAS takes over the new Lab11 venue in Digbeth for one night only, assembling over 20 DJs across three rooms of music, installing an array of special FX, pyrotechnics and a laser mirror system never seen before in Birmingham. After recently announcing plans to launch the GLAS record label, NYE will feature exclusive live performances of the brand’s first releases. Full details of the party are being kept under-wraps for now, but an intimate affair reminiscent of the early GLAS parties is promised. With only 700 tickets available on-line it’s a matter of time before the event is sold out. For full details see www.GLASparty.com or www.facebook.com/GLASfanpage

On Friday October 19, Birmingham’s ICC hosted a star-studded ball to celebrate the short life and national charity efforts of brave Birmingham schoolboy Harry Moseley. The glittering event was a sell-out, attended by 1,250 guests including Harry’s celebrity friends and business leaders from across the West Midlands, and raised more than £100,000 for his charity, Help Harry Help Others (HHHO), which provides support for cancer sufferers and their families, as well as funding research to find a cure for cancer. Organised by Tim Andrews, managing director of Hollywood Monster, and former Big Brother contestant and Birmingham corporate lawyer
Peter (PJ) Ellis, with support from Harry’s mother Georgie, the evening celebrated Harry’s charity work and fighting spirit. Before his death last year, Harry raised more than £700,000 for cancer charities by selling hand-made bracelets and touring schools and businesses up and down the country. Also in attendance was TV presenter Ben Shephard, former Aston Villa player Ian Taylor, former Birmingham City player Michael Johnson, Harry Potter stars Oliver and James Phelps, TV presenter Alison Hammond and Olympic gymnast Kristian Thomas. A brilliant evening was enjoyed by all to celebrate the fantastic work of an inspirational young boy.

I enjoyed Style Birmingham Live. I haven’t presented a fashion event on this scale before, and it was brilliant. Women, goodie bags and fashion shows are just up my street! Everyone says it, but I really do love mixing designer with high street. British high street fashion is fantastic, especially River Island and Zara, and some designer prices can be ridiculous. Investment pieces aside, it’s foolish to spend huge amounts on something I know I’ll wear once. I’ll head to
Selfridges, Harvey Nichols and Harrods for a good look around: I adore Sass & Bide, Helmut Lang, the Olsen twins’ own label Elizabeth & James, and Yves Saint Laurent. I go to London Fashion Week to support friends in the industry. Increasingly, fashion shows are about colour, music and spectacle, so as a lover of theatre, I’ve really started to enjoy it. These days, I feel comfortable in my own skin. In your thirties, you know
- 011 -
who you are, you know what suits you and I know that my style has evolved. I don’t worry about being too cool, too funky, or co-ordinated from head to toe. I like to work a classic look with edgy accessories, or a splash of colour. I have a passion for jewellery, especially silver. I don’t feel ‘dressed’ until I’ve got the accessories right, even if that means absolutely minimal ones. I’m an instinctive dresser: it has to feel right for me to be happy.
