I learned beauty secrets from my mother and grandmother. My mom says that eating well ‘always shows up’. The way I was raised was about who we were, not what we looked like, and taking care of yourself was the main thing. My grandma and my mom are understated, and their idea of what is beautiful and chic is very high quality, less is more kind of thing. If I had come down for school in the morning with a lot of makeup on, it would have been taken off. My sisters taught me about makeup. My sisters helped me when I was younger, definitely in the department of ‘don’t wear too much.’ And then I kind of learned through working. I started working when I was 17, and at that point I had never even washed my face, so taking the makeup off was a whole new thing. And daily makeup, obviously, is different from television and movie makeup. I remember I had to do my own makeup for something and so a makeup artist created this whole chart for me. I don’t think it was awesome, but I followed the directions and I did it! You learn along the way.

9

you could have hours! But that’s my personality. It’s like, green juice is good? I’m going to have six today! And then I can’t drink green juice for months. I get facials, exercise a lot, and I feel like that helps. Drink a lot of water is my rule. My everyday makeup? I wear Bobbi’s makeup every day. I usually just do light blush, eye shadow, mascara, a little lip gloss. One of my friends pulled me aside one day and said, ‘you have got to start wearing lip gloss.’ I said, ‘I do?’ Now I always have lip gloss in my bag. I’ll put it on in the elevator and it’s like, ‘Oh yeah! I feel good!’ I have a travel size makeup bag. I really don’t trust myself for events – I always hire someone for that – but my daily makeup is all in there. I use an eye pencil because I’m afraid of liquid, and my hand isn’t that steady. And go easy on the blush: less is more. I love false eyelashes. If I could put them on myself, I would do it every day. For black tie events, I’ll mix things up. Sometimes I like to have a little bit of fun, and do a bright lip or something. But I always try to keep it as subtle as possible while covering up what needs to be covered up, and highlighting what’s working. I still always want to look like me. You have 15 minutes on the red carpet, and if you look like a clown, it’s kind of weird.

I was allowed when I was 14 to have mascara and lip gloss. Then in high school I got away with blush and maybe a little eye shadow. But I was really busy in high school, and I went to an all girls’ school, so I definitely didn’t wear it Katie wears Bobbi Brown’s new Long-Wear to school. It was more Cream Shadow Stick in Violet Plum and Bark, on counter now, in eight shades, £20 reserved for dances and Lauren Hutton is football games. That’s my beauty icon, because she becomes more and more something I love about Bobbi Brown’s makeup: you amazing. Her beauty keeps up with her, and she with never walk in a room and people are like, ‘I like your it. Audrey Hepburn. Michelle Obama. Grace Kelly. My makeup!’ That’s always a bad sign when the first thing mom. someone notices about you is that you have makeup on. I like to pick up tips from makeup artists. I am always I’m not expert but I enjoy applying makeup. How very nosy, looking at what new products they have. I’m good I am is dependent on the day, and the amount always really interested in how they do the eye. I think of time I have. I’ve learned so many things not to do – the trick is learning how to line your eye and not make I’ve made a lot of mistakes. The cat’s eye is not for me, it too heavy. I keep practising. Probably the best tip I’ve apparently! I always want to try it, but I just look like learned is that I’m more of a nude lipstick person than a mess. Sometimes I – torture might be the wrong darker. word – but now I do my sisters’ makeup and my As an actress, makeup plays a huge part in creating friends’ makeup. It’s fun! I’m not very good at it, a character. When I was working on The Kennedys but I do try. (starring as Jackie Kennedy) that was as extreme as I My own skincare routine is simple. I ever went, and that was really fun. I had a whole new try to exfoliate every day, gently. I love respect for my makeup artist. It was interesting to see lotion, and I put a lot of it on in the how certain shading or the way you apply something morning, and then wear a mask can really change your face. That was the most obvious at night, to sleep in. I just don’t experience I’ve had where you turn up looking like believe that only 10 minutes is yourself and then you go through hair and makeup and going to do the job. When you’re like, ‘ok, now I’m this person.’ Just sitting there

K AT I E ’ S FAVO U R I T E T H I N G S in the makeup room chair and having stuff put on your face that you wouldn’t dare do yourself, helps to put you in the mindset of someone else. I find inspiration walking the streets of New York and seeing what women are wearing. That’s what I love about New York: you can never just go somewhere in your sweats. No one is going to forgive you for that. You’ve got to be ready when you walk out. That’s your statement. I also get inspiration from old films, new films, old beauty books, old fashion books, art.

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK

BOBBI BROWN MAKEUP

My fashion label Holmes & Yang shows at New York Fashion Week. We asked Bobbi to do the makeup because she highlights the woman – you see her, you don’t see the makeup. We try to do the same thing when we’re designing – we’re always making sure that the girl isn’t lost, and that the cuts are as flattering as possible and that the clothes are wearable and practical. So we kind of put the two together. The models were transformed. I thought they were gorgeous when I met them, but when I saw them all ready I was like, ‘wow.’ I work out four times a week, or try to. I ride the bike and run, I lift weights, do yoga. I try to eat healthily. You do have the meal of the week that’s French fries and cupcakes, and I think that’s important. But I try to eat a lot of kale, salad with chicken, food that just helps me keep up with life. I’ve never borrowed a look from a character. Often I think ‘I’m going to take this lipstick at the end of this, because it looks great.’ But by the end, you’ve gone through this journey with this character, and think ‘you know what? I want my own makeup and my own clothes and to be myself again.’ I adapt my look for each job. For a morning TV show you want to look fresh and not wear too much makeup. For a late night show you can do something kind of daring. But as for the red carpet, I feel like those photos will be around (for a long time), so it’s a little more high pressure. You want it to be perfect. They can really zoom in! So in those cases it’s a matter of getting a facial that morning, and then doing the best I can. What I tell my daughter Suri about beauty is that the most important thing is what’s going on in your heart and your head. We’ll always have fun with lip gloss, but I try not to have the focus be on looks. It’s definitely more about running really fast, and reading, and that sort of thing. I really like Bobbi Brown’s philosophy that makeup makes you feel beautiful, stronger and better. Women handle so much, and I think those little things really matter. I have yet to meet a woman that doesn’t love lipstick. It’s the universal equalizer. Confidence is vital. What makes me feel powerful? Accomplishing my ‘to do’ list! I’m a multi-tasker. I like to create opportunities.

MICHELLE

HEATON

L i b e rty X s tar Mic h elle Heaton talks fashi on, fame , cha ri t y and s p o rt with Style B i r mi ngham’s Andrew Riley Reforming Liberty X for ITV2’s The Big Reunion show and tour has been an experience! It’s amazing that I was able to get back into the swing of being a pop star so quickly. We were all quite nervous about getting back together, and we didn’t really know whether it was the right thing to do but we all got back into it really quickly and it felt natural. There have been some negatives. For the other girls in the band the bad thing about getting back together was opening themselves up to scrutiny again. It took them a number of years to get their anonymity and identity back after the band split in 2007, and to open up again to be scrutinised or judged was quite a big deal, but they’ve dealt with it well. Fame can be a double-edged sword. It can be really difficult. Twitter is an amazing thing, I’m addicted to it, but it’s really hard to sometimes read the bad comments. They are what you remember, which is unfortunate. There could be thousands of good comments a day but the bad comments stick in your head. The worst tweet I ever received was when I was pregnant, and someone wrote that they hoped that I fell down the stairs and killed the baby. Sometimes you get personal abuse like ‘I really hate you’, but you have to brush it off because that’s just people’s opinions and they might be having a bad day. Katie Price is one of my best mates and all the guys doing The Big Reunion. Blue are really good friends of mine, and Liz from Atomic Kitten is one of my best friends. I work hard at staying in shape. If your diet’s not right, then nothing will be. I live by the 80:20 rule, which is I’m really good 80 per cent of the time and I’m really bad

issue 33

20 per cent of the time. My top tip is to learn what’s right and what’s not: some people don’t know what a carb is, they think chocolate’s not a carb because it’s not white. So you have to learn about what you’re eating and never skip meals. I always have food in my bag - protein bars, nuts and seeds.

breast cancer, so I do a lot of work with cancer charities. To be affiliated with this one in particular, which is nonprofit, is brilliant. It’s great that £2 of every £27 ticket sale for Ladies’ Day at the Aegon Classic goes straight to the charity. The work breast cancer charities do improving awareness and encouraging regular checks is crucial.

As a mum, I have to fit in exercise when I can. Going to the gym five days a week is not possible when you’re a mum, but I enjoy working out at home. The best thing I ever bought was Insanity: The Ultimate Cardio Workout and Fitness DVD (Amazon) because it’s just the best at-home DVD ever.

I love bags and shoes because it doesn’t matter how fat I feel, they fit! I love Christian Louboutin, just because the red sole is classic and I do find genuinely find his shoes very comfortable. But for high street, I love Aldo! I have to admit to spending a lot of money on bags, but I see them as an investment, as my handbags will be handed down to my daughter Faith when she’s older. I mix high street and designer: I’ll wear Topshop leggings with my Cartier watch.

Sport is so glamorous these days. I think it’s amazing! To have a sportswoman or man as a pin-up for young children in today’s society is 10 times better than having an untalented TV star do the same thing. I think the Olympics helped a lot: when you get such a classy person as Jessica Ennis, who’s naturally glamorous, beautiful and talented, then young women will look up to her and that’s the best thing. The Aegon Classic Ladies Day is about fashion as well as tennis. It’s obviously about getting together and watching a great game of tennis, but it’s going to be about fashion too and there’s going to be prizes for best dressed on the day, as well as cocktails, Champagne, strawberries, all things glamorous! I’m bringing my mum and my best friends and we are all going to have a girly day out. I’m so pleased that Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer is an official supporter of the Aegon Classic. The charity is hugely important to me because of my personal struggle: I had a double mastectomy and reconstruction after genetic testing showed I had a high risk of developing

My worst fashion mistake ever? That would have to be forgetting to wear underwear! I also used to deliberately wear red underwear on stage when I was young, because I knew it would get photographed. I mean, what an idiot! It got me in the papers for the wrong reasons. Right now, I’m listening to Liberty X, of course! I really like The Saturdays too, and Mariah Carey is my all-time favourite artist. She’s everything I wanted to be when I was younger. And how funny it was to see Ant and Dec’s 19 year-old hit Let’s Get Ready to Rhumble back at number one this month! • Michelle Heaton is ambassador for Ladies’ Day at the UK’s most prestigious all-female international tennis tournament, the Aegon Classic, which will be held at the Edgbaston Priory Club on Thursday June 13 2013. STYLE MEETS... PAULA REED

FAS H I O N N EWS

THE LEGENDARY FASHION EDITOR AND STYLE GURU IS THE NEW FASHION DIRECTOR FOR HARVEY NICHOLS

New season shopping = one of the great joys of spring

label love

Who are your favourite designers? Nina Ricci, for the designer Peter Copping’s modern femininity. Celine for Phoebe Philo’s sleek modernism, Chanel for its timeless luxury, Alaïa when I feel like showing off a little, and Raoul, for everyday basics that are chic and never boring. What are your key trends for this season? I love summer whites and the catwalks are full of crisp, clean looks. I am also buying into the tuxedo look which has been re-interpreted by everyone from Alber Elbaz at Lanvin to Hedi Slimane at Saint Laurent Paris.

You have had one of the most amazing careers in fashion. How did you get your first break? My first job was with PR guru Lynne Franks. It was back in the 1980s. I was a graduate with no connections in this country at all and I literally walked in off the street and asked her for a job. And she gave it to me. Success stories are only possible with the generosity of others and I am still grateful to her for a break. With 20 years in the industry, what’s been your fashion highlight? There are almost too many to mention. I cheered at Alexander McQueen’s first show and cried at Yves Saint Laurent’s last. But I’d have to say the show that Karl Lagerfeld did for Fendi on the Great Wall of China still gives me goose bumps when I remember it.

The new spring collection from Label Lab at House of Fraser is its coolest yet, full of quirky jackets, wear-everywhere leggings and eye-catching prints. Models wear: t-shirt £30, leggings £25 and shirt £50; suedette drape jacket £110 and dress £70.

If money was no object, which collection would you be buying this season? Lanvin. Alber Elbaz is on fire at the moment. I love his new energy.

Who are the rising stars of fashion this year? My favourites are all on the London catwalks. We are completely spoiled with talent in this country right now. I am loving Paula Gerbase’s take on tailored androgyny for 1205. I am mad for Alessandra Rich’s evening wear. And of course the likes of Roksanda Illincic, Jonathan Saunders, Christopher Kane, Peter Pilotto and Meadham Kirchoff are becoming international fashion forces.

BEYONCÉ ON THE BEACH H&M’s latest starry signing is Mrs Carter herself, Beyoncé. The A-lister stars in TV and print ads for the H&M summer collection, which is full of fringed bikinis and print maxis. Beyoncé said: “I’ve always liked H&M’s focus on fun and affordable fashion. I really loved the concept we collaborated on to explore the different emotions of women represented by the four elements – fire, water, earth and wind. It was a beautiful shoot on a tropical island. It felt more like making a video than a commercial.” The collection hits stores in early May.

How does it feel to be famous for your personal sense of style? It is quite a shock, actually. First and foremost because growing up as a child I was such a tomboy, always naked or in dungarees. I was never interested in clothes or anything like that. It was only when I began modelling at 18 that I really began enjoying fashion and reading any fashion magazine I could get my hands on, and developing a profound respect for designers, fashion and how to wear it. So when people pay me a compliment like that, I feel totally honoured. I wear clothes that make me inherently happy. You’re known for an effortless style: is it as easy as it looks? Well, I never go out of my comfort zone. I never do anything that doesn’t feel natural to me. I wake up in the morning and I know what to put on – it’s my sixth sense, really. I don’t feel like I make too many mistakes any more. I’ve dropped way too many clangers for that! You are a Young Ambassador for the British Fashion Council: what does that entail? It was a huge honour when the BFC approached me. First of all, I started doing fashion week shows when I was 18 years old, and I only did a couple of shows. It wasn’t really for me, and I didn’t enjoy it as much as I enjoy doing print and other such things. But then I started going to the shows because I couldn’t wait to see what was coming down the catwalk, and at that point I was falling in love with fashion, and the BFC took notice of me and called and asked if I wanted to get involved. And obviously I said yes! I am a Young Ambassador for them, which entails meeting the latest designers, helping them and nurturing them, giving them advice – I sometimes visit their studios – introducing them to the right people, and to the right girls to wear their clothes.

is something on the side that I am very passionate about, and I think British fashion is constantly on the way up at the moment and London Fashion Week is skyrocketing, so it’s a very exciting time to be part of it. You’re associated with ‘street style’: how do you feel about that? I think it’s very interesting. There was a moment when blogging and viral and street style became very ‘now’. People turn their noses up at it, but it was something I instantly fell in love with, because I didn’t just want to see what was on the catwalk, but what was on the streets as well. Because what was everyone else wearing? I found that far more inspiring than anything else, so street style is something I’ve always been fascinated by, and I love the pictures that the street style photographers take. I think they are immaculate and stunning, and they really capture a moment in fashion that campaigns and editorials don’t capture in the same way. You’re the face of cool Scandi label Vero Moda this spring... I had obviously heard a lot about the brand. Then I did my research, and found that for a high street brand, they are so bang on trend, but yet so accessible. And I think that’s so important in this day and age. But they are cool, they’re kooky, they’re fun and they’ve got an edge to them that I think a lot of high street brands don’t have, so I wanted to be a part of that. Who’s your style icon? I think Marlene Dietrich in the old days was pretty immense, and today I love Lady Amanda Harlech, because how the hell do you make couture look so easy? It’s impossible to think of the great British high street without picturing a branch of Dorothy Perkins. Reliable, affordable and trend-driven, DP’s clothes represent the best in youthful fashion, full of quirkiness, colour and fun. Whether it’s a statement dress or a fabulous top to wear next Saturday night, you know that DP will deliver, and it won’t break the bank, either: essential in these challenging times. This season, DP is on a high following a winter that was dominated by the label’s collaboration with the Kardashian sisters on the wildly successful Kardashian Kollection. Rest on its laurels? Not a bit of it: Dorothy Perkins has come up with a spring line that often looks and feels like high-end designer. There are Mary Katrantzou-style graphic prints, well-cut dresses worthy of Victoria Beckham’s own collection and gorgeous everyday basics with an upmarket twist: silky bomber jackets, ikat print trousers, floral blazers and flirty maxis. Accessories are something DP always does well and this spring expect fantastic jewellery with flora and fauna motifs mixed with edgy studs. Don’t miss the new swimwear range: picture-prints on swimsuits and sexy cut-away bikinis will make holidaywear easy this year. • See our competition, page 66

line. My make-up artist taught me that! I like scents that are natural and fresh so right now it’s The Body Shop White Musk Libertine, which features in my cruelty-free collection. I like to pamper at home. I always sing in the shower and it’s usually some kind of jingle from an advert. But overall, I prefer a bath because you can have bubbles!

I’m always chopping and changing and love trying different things. I’d say simplicity is key, though. How would I describe myself in just a few words? Happy, totes emosh, funny, creative and passionate! I vamp things up for the red carpet. I love a beautiful gown when I’m on stage, and luckily I’ve been fortunate to wear some amazing dresses. Day to day I’m more relaxed, although I do enjoy the odd night curled up on the sofa watching EastEnders in a Cavalli gown! My top beauty tip is simple. Drink lots of water and juice. For me, having glowing, healthy skin is beautiful. I have been veggie since I was about 12. I call myself a vegetarian with vegan tendencies.

I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the top makeup artists in the world and along the way I’ve learnt so much! My most useful tips are make-up looks relating to photo shoots and stage. Makeup changes so much in these lighting situations so you really have to cater to what the light reflects. You can look totally different in the dressing room to when you hit the stage because of the lighting. I go back to the same makeup favourites time and again. For lips, I like a pink/peach tone as I feel it complements my skin tone. For cheeks, I love a nice pinky-blush and for eyes, I love subtle brown/gold tones. For the perfect cat’s eye flick, mark where you would like the flick to end, make sure it’s even on both sides and then follow the

I’ve been performing since I was 6, and the highlight of my career so far has to be my tour in 2010, which was pretty amazing. I learnt so much, from performing to production, and had a really great time. I don’t find it hard to achieve a work/life balance. I work hard and then take time to do the things I love, such as walking and horse-riding. I can always make time to go riding or to the beach, spend time with my mates and just have a laugh. I love going to Wales as my family live there, and I always have my books and my note pad with me so I can draw and write. What’s next? I’m writing lots at the moment and working on some personal projects. I’m also preparing for my tour which starts in May, and I’m so excited about it! I see myself touring more, writing more and expanding more on my personal interests. I’d love to be involved in a film and musical production in a writing capacity. I’m very conscious of where the products that I use come from. The Body Shop sells amazing cruelty-free, ethically-sourced products: everything it creates has real ‘heart’ inside and I love being a part of that. My Limited Edition Collection for The Body Shop is a playful, fashion- forward collection that’s perfect for spring, bursting with free spirit and wearable shades for every skin tone. My favourites? The Shimmer Palettes because they’re super-versatile, complement all skin tones and are great for highlighting and contouring. I chose two shades: a pretty Blush to give a lovely flush of rosy colour and Bronze for a sun-kissed glow. I also love the White Musk Libertine fragrance. I wanted to incorporate a cruelty-free musk fragrance into my collection to celebrate The Body Shop White Musk, one of the first fragrances to use man-made musk. A playful and sensual scent, it blends intoxicating musk, Turkish delight, baby orchid and Chantilly cream. • The Limited Edition Collection by Leona Lewis is available now at The Body Shop

FOOD & D R I N K N E WS

SNACK HAPPY WITH ZOE TV and radio presenter Zoe Ball is fronting a new campaign – Snack Happy – to promote the health benefits of almonds, and here talks about her daily diet and love of good food As I’ve got older I’ve found that what I eat hugely affects my day-to-day life and of course eating things that are good for me means I look and feel better! I started snacking on almonds after my trainer recommended eating a handful a day, because they are a natural source of protein and fibre, they keep me feeling full and help me get through any busy day. Eating a handful every day for 21 days has definitely made me feel better inside and out. Ultranutritious almonds are tasty and satisfying: it’s the ideal guilt-free snack.

SWEET CHILLI BEETROOT AND POTATO MASH SERVED WITH STEAK With its hot pink hue and fiery beetroot kick, this lavish mash recipe can’t fail to impress, especially when served up with fillet steak and fresh green veg. A great supper option, whether indulging alone or sharing with friends

Serves: 2 Preparation time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes

You’ll need:

What to do:

400g mashing potatoes

Peel the potatoes and cut each into eight. Put them into a large pan of salted water and bring to the boil. Simmer for 10 minutes until the potatoes are tender. While the potatoes cook, chop the beetroot into quarters and season the steaks.

4 sweet chilli cooked beetroot 2 fillet steaks 1tsp olive oil 4 tbsp crème fraiche Salt and pepper

Serve with: 100g Tenderstem broccoli, steamed and tossed in lemon juice and olive oil

Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan and when it’s very hot cook the steaks for two to three minutes on each side (longer if you want them well done). When the steaks are cooked to your liking, put them on a warm plate and set aside to rest. Once the potatoes are just tender add the beetroot to the water and simmer for two minutes longer. Drain the water away and add the crème fraiche to the pan. Mash everything together well until you have a smooth pink mash. Season to taste. Slice the steak and serve with a dollop of mash and the steamed Tenderstem. Pour any meat juices over.

Never get caught short. Be prepared. I’m a bit of a shopaholic and often find myself popping into a shop to treat myself to a new sparkly dress or shoes - especially when it’s Strictly Come Dancing time. When I’m rushing around I often get peckish so I always carry a handful of almonds, a natural source of protein and fibre, in a little tin in my jacket pocket to quickly nibble on whilst I’m on-the-go. Keeping my energy levels up...all day. I know I’m a very energetic person, some may

even say hyperactive. When I’m filming I’m constantly tempted by sugary snacks on set which give me a real intense sugar rush followed by an energy crash, so I try to avoid them. Everything in moderation. I try to eat healthily as well as exercise to keep in shape. I eat a lot of meat, greens and fish. However, I always make sure I have the occasional treat so won’t say no to a piece of cake when I’m out for coffee with my friends! * To sign up to the Snack Happy Challenge visit AlmondBoard.co.uk and they’ll send you a challenge starter pack. Follow progress on twitter using #snackhappy.
