Regarded as the world’s most famous makeup artist, Charlotte

Tilbury has worked with them all, from supermodels and movie stars to fashion royalty such as Stella McCartney, Tom Ford and Mario Testino. She’s best friends with Kate Moss and Penelope Cruz, shades the cheekbones of J-Lo and bronzes the beautiful bodies of the catwalk models at the legendary Victoria’s Secret shows.

N

ow, Charlotte has launched her own makeup line, a natural progression for an artist at the very top of her game, with decades of experience and access to the very best cutting-edge formulations. The much-anticipated Charlotte Tilbury collection has just launched in Selfridges Birmingham, after breaking sales records elsewhere in the UK and online. Packed with hero skincare and miracle makeup, the range is the culmination of working on supermodels’ and stars’ faces for years, from runway to Vogue shoot, and, as you’d expect, it includes plenty of expert tricks and insider tips to help women look and feel the absolute best version of themselves. Style Birmingham’s Andrew Riley went to meet Charlotte to get the inside scoop on her exciting new venture. Makeup defines my life. I was bought up in Ibiza and went to a boarding school, then I discovered the power of mascara and make-up and that totally revolutionised my life. I’ve built an incredible career, working with everyone from Mario Testino to Kate Moss, Carine Roitfeld and J-Lo. I know that makeup can make your day better. The psychology of makeup is interesting. It’s an instant effect so when you look at yourself in the mirror you feel good about yourself and the whole world reacts to you in a happier and more positive way. And I think celebrities understand that because they have glam teams working with them the whole time, and supermodels are always saying ‘I need my makeup’! Looking the best you possibly can is empowering. It’s a woman’s secret weapon and a man’s secret weapon and we should run with it: we want to wake up not only looking fabulous but feeling fabulous. The other day I did a 16 hour photoshoot then I looked at myself and saw that I looked exhausted, so I redid my makeup and felt like I had more energy. Then people were complimenting me, and they could see I was revitalised, and it’s like I painted that energy back in myself.

issue 39

Where do I stand on cosmetic surgery, fillers and Botox? I think a little, if done cleverly, is fine but I think makeup is a better way, because there’s so many things you can do with it. For example, I can lift people’s cheekbones and I can make their skin glow when it looks old or tired, so I can cheat my way through it to look 10 years younger and avoid the knife at any cost. And fillers can also go scarily wrong, especially for men: they can look terrible. I like a man that takes care of his skin and appearance but when they start messing with Botox and the rest it can get scary. When I meet a woman, I can instantly see what her skin needs and what colours would suit her. It’s something I’ve always been able to do. I advise women to find a range, like mine, that’s safe to play with, so they don’t mind trying this or that. I designed my products so that blushers go with lipsticks and you can see the whole look come together. And everyone on the counters has been trained by me so they have the expertise to really help. It’s estimated that more than 50 percent of women don’t engage with makeup and I find that shocking. I think it’s because they are scared and don’t want to look stupid, and don’t know what to use. I used to work with seven suitcases of make-up and was like an alchemist mixing things together trying to create the perfect nude-pink colour for Penelope Cruz, or mixing glitters backstage for Victoria’s Secret models. People would tell me they wanted a bit of this or that to take home but I was just experimenting. I wanted to have my own make-up brand using my experience of working for Chanel, Armani, Mac, Helena Rubenstein, and others. I put all my artistry into my new range, and am proud that it broke three records including biggest beauty launch in the history of Selfridges. I really admire people like Coco Chanel, Helena Rubenstein and Estee Lauder: all those women who preached about

“Looking the best you possibly can is empowering. It’s a woman’s secret weapon”

how to transform beauty. When a makeup artist creates a range you know you’re safe because they’re experts and understand what’s needed. Also, I wear two hats: one as a consumer, one as an expert. And all our stuff is easy enough for a man to choose, because women that don’t understand anything about makeup have as much knowledge as men, so that was the barometer when creating the brand. I thought about all the questions that my friends ask me and the result is that the product is the expert and you don’t need me there. I worked hard on formulation. For years, I looked for trend leaders on formula and built an amazing relationship with the laboratories. Women find the choice in beauty halls confusing, and I wanted to make it simple, take all the backstage secrets that I’ve learnt from working on celebrities over the years and put it in an easy to use format so it’s easy for real women but with that glossy A-list perfection. My hero products? I change my look according to my wardrobe, and my makeup range reflects that. One minute I’ll be a Rebel and the next minute Dolce Vita or a Golden Goddess. I named the products after the celebrities who inspired them, like Rock Chick is named after Kate Moss, and there’s an eyebrow pencil named after Cara Delevigne, and I’m planning a lipstick for Sienna Miller. Jennifer Lopez understands the importance of facial highlighting and contouring and so I created Filmstar Bronze and Glow with her in mind. Also Wonder Glow, which Beyoncé is obsessed with: it’s great if you’re exhausted, have a hangover or during winter as it literally gives you a healthy glow. My Magic Cream was known as ‘Charlotte’s secret cream’, because models used it after they’d done Fashion Week to perk up tired skin: it was like cashmere. The biggest mistake women make is applying too much foundation. All my team were trained by me so they can colourmatch properly, and all my products have skincare benefits. The foundation has natural chemicals in it so it’s not thick and heavy. A lot of people think they have to pancake on makeup, and I’d say 60-70 percent of brands make bad makeup: too orange, too grey. When I was creating my foundation colours that was the one thing I had to get right and was the most difficult thing. Easy summer beauty is about glow. I used to look at the golden goddess faces of Gisele and Kate and other models on boats and beaches and, being bought up as an island girl myself, I would look at the way the sunset would come off the boat and it’s all about a rustic, gorgeous glow. I wanted to come out with something that mimics that,

issue 39

so that when you have the blues in your office you can steal a bit of that quick easy look and put your holiday into your face. My Beach Sticks recreate that sunshine glow, while controlling shine. In five sets of colours, it’s a golden healthy glow as if you have come back from a holiday in Ibiza. Holiday in a bottle. You have to get fake tan right or it looks orange. It’s great for a little bit of a golden glow, and I’m currently developing a product named Supermodel Body which is inspired by all the models I work with. I’m used to bronzing them backstage, adding a shimmer to their skin, but often the colour would transfer to their clothes so I worked with the labs to create Firm and Protect which gives a golden glow to your limbs but doesn’t come off. I’m so in love with makeup that I sometimes break the rules and don’t take it off at night! Before bed, I wash my face with my Multi-Miracle Glow then I put my Magic Cream on then my Wonder Glow, so I do let my skin breathe. And when I’m really exhausted I’ll put Retoucher concealer under my eyes but the eyeliner mascara and eye shadow goes on all the time. I am a skincare junkie though. I was impressed when I first visited Birmingham. I think all the girls I’ve met are so beautiful: they love makeup and they take care of their appearance. So I’m really excited by Birmingham, helped by the fact that Katy Perry was there the last time I was in the city and there was lots of excitement!

Lucy Loves

F

irst things first… I love wine, cake, bread and chocolate. I’m telling you that as I have a feeling this latest installment of Lucy Loves could sound a bit preachy and that is far from the story I want to tell. But I do want to share with you some tricks I’ve picked up over recent years that will make sure you look and feel better this summer than ever before. What do I know? Well, I’m not claiming to be an expert but I can tell you what works for me. I’ve done lots of research, spoken to the experts and discovered that there is a whole new world out there of health and beauty boosting foods that will change your world, giving you more energy and helping you cope better with what life throws at you. The thing is I don’t always eat well, but I notice a huge difference when I do. Yoga has without doubt made me get to know myself better and has made me more conscious of what I choose to fuel my body with. I have a huge urge to give myself the best chance possible of staying well. If I’m eating good food, drinking lots of water and generally being kind to myself everything is better, my skin, immunity, body shape, confidence, happiness levels… everything! My main rule is to eat as fresh as possible. Forget the five portions of fruit and veg a day rule: I aim for at least 10 a day and there is a simple and painless way to get that goodness in your body before you even step out the door, and that’s juicing! There are lots of juicers out there, but I use a centrifugal one (that extracts the juice really quickly) and my latest purchase is a Nutribullet, a fusion of a juicer and blender which is extremely powerful and breaks down all the ingredients with zero waste to allow your body to absorb all the good stuff (buynutribullet.co.uk).

issue 39

EATING FRESH Keep up with Lucy at lucykite.co.uk, or follow her on twitter: @LUCYITV I throw in nuts, seeds, fruit, veg, and powdered supplements like maca and spirulina. They all go in, but crucially, the machine is quick and easy to clean which stops the whole process feeling too much like hard work. ‘The Juice Master’ Jason Vale is the UK’s leading expert on the health benefits of juicing. He’s been called ‘the Jamie Oliver of the juicing world’ and his books and DVDs (juicemaster.com) are all bestsellers. He says: “‘I know firsthand the sheer power of the juice. I suffered from severe asthma, psoriasis, eczema, hayfever and one of the most common ailments to hit the UK population - being overweight. Yet by simply swapping my normal junk(ie) foods and drinks for a freshly extracted juice or two a day my mental and physical health improved beyond anything I had envisaged.”

oils when I’m cooking as it boosts metabolism and increases energy levels and I also slather it all over my body! Not only does it make it soft but it’s got anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties too. Finally, I just need to squeeze in one suggestion. The Buddhist monks have been in on this little treasure for centuries. It boosts energy for six hours and puts your brain in an alpha state - calm yet alert – which is your most productive place to be. Plus it has 137 times more antioxidants than standard green tea. I’m talking about Tea Pigs Matcha, a concentrated form of green tea. It looks like pond water but tastes like heaven! Wishing you a strong, happy, summer of fun!

Wellness writer Polly Noble is also an advocate of juicing. Polly swears by green veggie juices to put her back on the track of health after fighting cancer twice before the age of 28. Polly says: “A juice is like a Ferrari – getting the nutrients to our sexy cells in super-fast time.” If you are looking to give your life a kick start for summer and break some bad habits Polly’s new ‘life guide’ is also worth a look: theconsciouslifeguide.com Another sure fire way to keep your energy levels boosted and your skin sparkling is to stay hydrated. With claims of being the most nutritious drink in the world, coconut water is well worth a try. Vita Coco is the easiest to get hold of in the city (vitacoco.com/uk). It’s zero fat and zero cholesterol and packed with electrolytes: oh, and a glass has more potassium than a banana! There is however another coconut product on the market that you’ll find in both my bathroom cabinet and in my kitchen: coconut oil.

A JUICE FROM JASON Jason Vale sent me this special juicing recipe to give you an energy boost! Take: • A quarter of a pineapple • Spinach: 1 large handful • A quarter of a medium-sized cucumber • A half of a medium-sized courgette • Fennel x 1 cm slice/chunk • Sugar snap peas (or beans) x 15 • Half a lime • Ice cubes: one small handful Simply juice all the ingredients and pour over ice.

Fair Trade and natural, Lucy Bee is a good choice (lucybee.co). I use it instead of standard

is for A-LIST GLAMOUR

Got a wedding or summer party to go to? Take a tip from the catwalk and go all-out: polished glamour is a key trend right now, so invest in a hat, skyhigh heels and superperfect makeup.

H Possibly our favourite trend of the whole year, and why? Hi-tops mix high fashion with fabulous comfort. Perfect with shorts, ideal for festivals and fun in the park, and so blissful after a long night partying in heels: Giuseppe Zanotti hi-top trainers, £790, Harvey Nichols.

Q is for QUIRKY NECKLACES

Collar necklaces are dominating jewellery right now and make the perfect summerwear: throw over a bikini to go from beach to bar, or use a bejewelled one to transform a simple tee. Look for quirky details: feathers, crystals, Perspex and beads: this tassel necklace is £6 at Primark.

issue 39

I

If you buy only one piece this summer, make it a bomber jacket. Re-imagined for a new generation, this classic is now in silky, satin fabrics, with a softer shape and floral print or pastel colour: we heart this Maison Scotch bomber, £130 at Harvey Nichols.

J

C

is for COVER-UP

It’s sexy to cover up a little this summer: one-piece swimsuits are on-trend, and so are kaftans, sarongs, pareos and harem pants for the beach. Choose floaty fabrics, and look out for materials with SPF too: we love this swim tee, £24.95, from Land’s End (landsend.co.uk).

Deep sea blue is one of the shades of the summer: not only on jeans but on beachwear and accessories. It pairs beautifully with those other summer perennials, white and metallics, so pile on the gold and silver! This top is from East.

The old favourite is back with a fabulous new accessories range this season, with an emphasis on great value for money and classic designs that will still work in years to come. This pretty summer watch is £80.

S

is for SHORT SUITS All over the SS14 runways, short suits are this season’s take on the jumpsuit trend. Cute and easy to wear, they’ve been spotted on everyone from Cheryl Cole and Alexa Chung to Denise Van Outen and Nicole Scherzinger. Mix with gladiators for pared-down chic.

is for TOWERING WEDGES The Duchess of Cambridge may like her wedges classic and cut for walking, but we like ours straight from the catwalk, and this season that means high, high, sky-high! Platform rope wedges are summer’s hottest shoe trend, and easier to walk in than you might think: wedges, £130, Chloe Jade Green for Topshop.

Inspired by the Preen summer catwalk show, Nails Inc has created a special limited edition collection that dresses nails in kaleidoscope colours of blue, pink, and silver. Super-luxe, it’s THE look for nails right now: the Preen by Thornton Brefazzi for Nails Inc, from £12.

is for MODERN BOHO Remember boho chic, the uber-trend of the mid Noughties? Sienna Miller, eat your heart out, because it’s back, but with a very glamorous 2014 twist, in added metallic touches, streamlined shapes and a beachy feel. This cover-up dress is £85, from the Kate Moss for Topshop collection.

is for ULTRA-FINE

FABRICS

This is where the sports luxe trend meets ladylike: fine, filmy, gossamer-fine fabrics on maxi dresses and floaty kaftan tops are a gorgeous look for summer. Take a leaf out of Donna Karan’s book and team with racer vests to keep the look streamlined.

We do love a Breton stripe. Luckily, nautical motifs are a strong trend: crisp white denim shorts, tan accessories, navy crop skinnies, espadrilles and deck shoes, and a palette of blue and red. Our tip? Choose one nautical piece rather than a whole outfit to avoid the sailor-onshore-leave look.

ML IPS

V Forget neutral shades and lacklustre gloss: lips are movie star perfect and slicked with creamy colour this summer. Think Hollywood grooming with flattering shades and a satin finish. The new Rich Lip Color collection from Bobbi Brown has five new ultra-brilliant shades, £19 each.

OPTICAL ILLUSION Mary Katrantzou, Peter Pilotto, Dolce & Gabbana: they all crafted exquisite prints into their summer collections. If a designer price tag is a little out of your price range, buy into the optical-illusion trend with one of the high street version: this mirror-image dress is just £55 at Marks & Spencer.

Mini-bags came straight from the king of couture: Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel. Sending his models down the runway with tiny crossbody bags with the legendary CC logo on them, Karl set a trend that shows no sign of abating. Just edit your stuff carefully or it’ll never fit in: neat bag, £65, Dune.

X

is for PATTERNED SUNGLASSES Ray-Bans are classic, oversized shades are practical, but this year, we’re all about the patterned sunnies. Fun and flirty, the trend’s been worked by Lily Allen and Cara Delevingne and the high street’s awash with bargain options. Or splash out on a Miu Miu pair, £215, selected department stores.

STYLE MEETS… THE SATURDAYS’

Una Foden

The Saturdays clocked up four top ten albums and 13 top ten singles in seven years. Now, as they release their greatest hits and tour the country, Una Foden talks to Style Birmingham’s Isabella Silvers

whether it’s for myself, other artists or the band I don’t know, but I love writing, going into the studio and creating new music. I hope to be in the music industry for many years to come so maybe one day I’ll do a solo record, but it doesn’t mean that the band is splitting up.

If the group isn’t splitting up, why release your greatest hits now?

The Saturdays used to be compared to Girls Aloud – did you get tired of hearing that?

We’re celebrating the fact that we’ve just released our 18th single and that we’ve had so many hits...what better way to do it than to take them all on tour? I think most artists see it as an achievement that you’ve got that far, and you still hope to one day release a second greatest hits - and a third and fourth! How do you see the Saturdays developing in the future? We actually met seven years ago and we’ve naturally grown together and evolved, not just in our careers but personally as well. We’ve got Frankie’s wedding coming up, Rochelle got married two years ago, we’ve got three children... success didn’t happen overnight either. We started at the bottom and slowly worked our way up. We’re just going to see where the journey takes us next. How has having children changed the dynamics of the band? It’s so natural now, life changes and you can’t really pinpoint how and in what ways, it just kind of happens and you can’t explain it. We’ve adapted very well, we’re such a family band. Is it difficult going on tour and leaving your family behind? This tour is only about two weeks so it’s not too bad. At the moment, I’ve got my husband Ben away from me in New Zealand with the England rugby team, but it’s the same for him when I’m on tour. One of us is always with our daughter Aoife so we always have a piece of each other. Do you have any favourite tracks to perform live? I love ‘Up’, that’s my ultimate favourite Saturdays song. I love ‘Higher’, ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’...all the early ones. It’s going be quite a nostalgic night; it’s just one big party really. Our show is so energetic with so many costume changes and lights, so anyone that comes along is in for a good time. Do you ever see yourself as a solo artist? I’d like to. Obviously the band is our priority, but I’ve been writing a lot of music. So

issue 39

It was a compliment because they were such a huge success, and we started out as their support band. We’re five girls who do pop music so of course we’re going to be compared, but when it’s to a band that we’ve always looked up to it was never an insult. Now we have our own identity, as do all of the girl bands out there. We never see it as a competition. What is your opinion of TV talent shows? They’re a great provider of entertainment. People want to see the really good acts, the funny ones and the bad ones, but off the back of it there have been some really successful artists. If I was to give any advice to people, I’d say never feel that you have failed if you don’t make it to the finals - it’s about taking part and enjoying the experience. Who inspires you musically? I started singing really young; my uncle is a country and Irish singer, I went to a lot of his gigs, and my mum gave me her guitar when I was 13 years old and I started writing my own songs. I’m into pop music, so I love Sheryl Crow, Madonna, Michael Jackson and Kylie; I love country and dance as well. What can we expect next from The Saturdays? We’re going straight in the studio after the tour to work on a new album, it never stops! In pop we like to stay with the times, we’re not going to do the same music forever but we do have our own sound. Our next single has just been released; it’s a fun, summery track and we shot the video in Rome. The Saturday’s ‘Greatest Hits’ is out on August 11. The Saturdays play the NIA on September 15. FIVE MINUTES WITH…

KATY B With a critically acclaimed chart-topping album under her belt, singer Katy B has now announced a full UK tour in October, including a night in Birmingham. Andrew Riley went to meet her You recently visited Birmingham for Gay Pride, how was that? Brilliant and a really good vibe. I’m a massive supporter of gay rights on a global scale so I’m performing at Manchester and Brighton Pride this year too. Did you stay and party afterwards? I didn’t, had to hop back on the tour bus for another gig, but I had a little party and dance when getting ready to go on stage. I did get to see Sarah Cox doing her 80s set and I randomly met the lady from Benefits Street, White Dee! She’s really lovely. Have you visited the city before? I haven’t stayed overnight, but when I played at the Institute a couple of months back I went to the Old Crown and had a pint of Guinness and a pie! Why’s your latest album named Little Red? I wrote a song called Little Red Light that was to do with the flashing light on a Blackberry and it reminds me of me: small with red hair. I love red too because it’s a passionate colour: to me it means love and lust which is part of the inspiration for the album.

Musical inspiration? I grew up listening to a lot of R&B: Boyz 2 Men and Timberland were favourites of my brother. I love soul music and I also love Erica Badhu. I used to hang around with a lot of rappers; you’re always exposed to rap, house music and dub step in London, particularly in Peckham where I’m from. Dance is of course a huge part of my musical inspiration. You have a love of dance music: do you go out raving and if so where? Definitely! I go to Dance Tunnel or the Nest – a night called Forward which I’ve been going to since I was 17. Fabrik in London is another favourite of mine. In Peckham I love the soul night at the Bussey Building, I still live in Peckham and go there a lot but since the selfie phenomenon its becoming more difficult to go out. I’m only small so try and hide in the crowd; maybe I should get a disguise? I love my fans of course, but I love a good out night out catching up with my best friends too and I much prefer the parties with a really loud sound system! How do you like to relax? I love seeing my friends and relaxing in a bath. I went to view a flat and it didn’t have a bath so it was a no! I love to cook too, and I made vegetarian curries yesterday. I’m not vegetarian but thought it would be something a little different. I find cooking really therapeutic. Fashion: high street or designer? Fashion is a big part of what I do. I love to mix it up. I love to wear prints: Jonathan Saunders tees, and McQueen dresses really suit my shape too. They have some amazingly detailed patterns and I like to wear them with a pair of Sophia Webster shoes. I love Kenzo too, really bright and fun and I performed at their party, it was really crazy! High street: ASOS, Top Shop, Zara. I’ve the most amazing Zara coat! What car do you drive? I’m in a Suzuki right now but it’s my friend’s! I don’t drive much, I get around in the tour bus and you don’t really need a car in London.

Do you have a personal favourite track from Little Red?

Favourite holiday destination?

Tumbling Down. I love it because it’s about that moment when you’re falling in love with someone. It’s such a lovely moment in time, your guard drops and you completely let that special person in. The lyrics to me are like a magical journey through Alice in Wonderland.

Ibiza! I go probably two or three times a year to perform. It’s everything I love: hot weather, beaches, the best clubs in the world; DC10 is my favourite. But other than the clubbing, the north is chilled with a hippy vibe which is just perfect for me and I have a love for Spanish food.

Many of the songs appear emotionally driven… My life’s completely changed and I’ve watched so many of my friends lives change as we’ve matured and tried to stand on our own two feet; my music is an interpretation of the challenges of this life stage. What’s been you career highlight so far? I really wanted to stand out on my own, so I’m really proud of my first album On a Mission. It took me a long time to finish and you think: will it come to anything? It’s hard to believe it’s going to get supported and recognised, but then I was nominated for an Ivor Novello award and I was ecstatic to say the least.

Favourite cities? London! I was lucky enough to perform in Austin, Texas which is such a different experience but I’d recommend it; it was so chilled with almost everyone wearing cowboy boots. They also have a massive live music scene. If you could sit on a bench overlooking the sea for an hour with a person past or present who would it be? Amy Winehouse: I’m a massive fan, she seemed like such a laugh and I’d have loved to have met her.

YOUR BEST BEACH BODY

Ever!

If you’re on holiday countdown, here’s a plan of action to get you in the best shape of your life: FAST. Lisa Reading and Richard Westwood, fitness and lifestyle experts at Edgbaston Priory Club, share their seven top tips for the perfect beach body

1. The key to being comfortable in your bikini lies in TONING UP YOUR LEGS, BUMS, ARMS and TUMS so you need to get down to the gym and focus on these four key areas. Target the legs with squats, lunges and step ups. These exercises will not only work your legs but also hit your bottom! Add in some tricep push ups and dips to firm up the upper arms. Work your tummy muscles by doing the famous plank exercise and add some abs crunch exercises for extra tone. Start by doing these exercises using your own body weight and then progress to using weights for extra benefit. If that all sounds a bit too technical then enrol yourself onto a Legs, Bums and Tums class which will introduce you to many of the exercises mentioned above. Edgbaston Priory Club offers more than 40 exercise classes a week. 2. TRY SHORTER MORE INTENSE INTERVAL SESSIONS instead of slogging away for hours on the treadmill at a constant pace. Whether you’re running, cycling, rowing or lifting weights try exercising for 30 seconds at a fast rate and 30 seconds at a slower rate for 10-15 minutes. Or give body rocker fitness or circuit classes a go – they will achieve the same effect. This way of exercising will help deliver a more toned look in the short-term. 3. If you’ve been going to the same class for the last 12 months then NOW IS THE TIME TO TRY SOMETHING NEW. Ever thought of Boxing Circuits or Cardio Tennis? Challenging your body to do a new form of exercise will trigger new muscle

issue 39

groups you’ve never discovered before and bring about a whole new toned feeling. 4. Get in the mood for the beach by INCLUDING A SWIM IN YOUR FITNESS REGIME. Swimming is an excellent training tool which can strengthen, tone and invigorate your entire body. Edgbaston Priory Club’s heated indoor and outdoor pools are open all year round and if the promised heat wave materialises you need never go away! 5. It goes without saying that you need to EAT A HEALTHY BALANCED DIET. Reduce your portion size and try and balance your meals between these two combinations: protein and carbohydrates or protein and fat. Avoid eating carbohydrates and fats together (that’s bread and butter!) at all costs. And of course eat plenty of fresh fruit, green vegetables and salad. Eating well is easier said than done so if you’re short of time to make yourself healthy nutritious meals try supplementing your diet. We recommend taking a good multi vitamin and a fish oil supplement with high omega 3 content. To replenish muscles and maintain a leaner, toned look, it’s a good idea to take a whey protein drink after exercise. For an intense nutrient and antioxidant boost incorporate a ‘green’ drink into your daily diet. There are lots on the market containing superfoods like spirulina, spinach and wheatgrass. Or try Lisa’s homemade green smoothie. Place 1tsp spirulina powder, a handful of spinach, 200ml apple juice, one peeled and chopped kiwi and a handful of blueberries

in a blender with a couple of ice cubes. Blitz, pour and enjoy a delicious and healthy smoothie. 6. SAVE THE ALCOHOL FOR THE HOLIDAY and make sure you drink lots of water. Drinking the recommended eight glasses or two litres a day isn’t rocket science. Just take a two litre bottle with you to work every day and make sure you finish it. We really can’t emphasise the health benefits of water enough. It helps the digestive process, removes toxins, improves the skin’s complexion and leaves you feeling full of energy and vitality. 7. And finally before you go on holiday be sure to TREAT YOURSELF TO SOME PAMPERING SESSIONS. Sort out the housekeeping first and book yourself in for a wax. Then give your hands and feet some TLC with a manicure and pedicure. Prepare your skin with a luxurious exfoliating body massage and complete the look with a light tan. There are lots of fabulous new tanning treatments available now, using natural ingredients to give you that sun-kissed glow. The new treatment room at Edgbaston Priory Club offers a range of therapies to prepare you for the beach. * Edgbaston Priory Club is a private members’ club with 32 tennis courts, 10 squash courts, a gym and exercise studio, heated indoor and outdoor pools (open all year round). Monthly subscription rates start from £60 a month together with family membership packages and discounts on offer for under 29s and over 65s. Fergie is a difficult man to pigeonhole. His aggressive outbursts have led to him being known as the creator of the ‘hairdryer treatment’, but footballers like David Beckham have also described him as a father figure. Whichever side you stand on, his CV remains pretty impressive.

Almost thirty years after the end of the Second World War, ageing Nazi hunter Yakov Lieberman uncovers a plot to bring about a ‘Fourth Reich’ in South America. But before you call The Boys from Brazil far-fetched, it is worth noting that the chilling “what if?” plot was inspired by true events.

The first of Child’s phenomenally popular Jack Reacher novels, Killing Floor hits the ground running, with our ex-military police hero wrongfully accused of a murder he didn’t commit. Just far will the authorities go to keep him in the frame?

The downtrodden Joad family leave the Dust Bowl and set out for California, in search of work and a future. Steinbeck’s depiction of the Joads’ waning faith in the American Dream against the backdrop of the Great Depression has made The Grapes of Wrath an enduring classic.

ED I PI TO CK R’ S

Award-winning author William Boyd breathes new life into Ian Fleming’s legacy in this new 007 adventure. The year is 1969, and James Bond is on a mission to avert civil war in a small nation (in between romancing the occasional femme fatale).

Alex Ferguson: My Autobiography

The Humans by Matt Haig

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

Margrave of The Marshes by John Peel

The Thirty-Nine Steps by John Buchan

The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle

Dr Andrew Martin, a Cambridge academic, is abducted by aliens and replaced with an imposter. This middle-aged changeling, who nurtures something close to contempt for all of humanity, must suddenly come to terms with the challenges of being a husband and father, when truth be told, the only member of his new family he can stand is the dog.

We might be on the cusp of summer, but in the land of Westeros, the cold winds of winter are never far away. Chances are your dad is already addicted to the TV show, so why not get him hooked on the source material too? At over 800 pages, it’s a hefty read, but the constant plot twists and vivid characters make A Game of Thrones pretty compelling stuff.

Sadly, John Peel passed away before he could complete his memoirs. That task fell to his wife, Sheila Ravenscroft, who takes the reader through Peel’s career as a broadcaster and his years as a family man. Together with Peel’s own account of his childhood, Margrave of The Marshes is a fractured but highly engaging portrait of a life cut short.

Richard Hannay is an old school action hero who could easily be the blueprint for James Bond. When he returns home to Britain from a long stay in Africa, Hannay finds himself drawn into a conspiracy which puts his life in grave danger. Following the success of The Thirty-Nine Steps, the character of Hannay went on to star in several additional adventure novels.

And how better to round off this list than with the greatest detective to ever exist within literature? The case-book contains the last twelve Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, including two mysteries which break with tradition and are narrated by Holmes himself, instead of his stalwart companion Dr Watson.

hether you’re a movie buff, designer shopping fan or beach babe, the sheer star quality of Hollywood guarantees an experience you’ll never forget. From the beautiful Hollywood Hills and boho canyons to iconic Sunset Boulevard, studio tours and star-spotting in Malibu, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

The capital of glitz and glamour, Hollywood makes the perfect summer holiday, says Sarah Drew Jones

Begin your Tinseltown odyssey at the legendary Hollywood Boulevard and the Hollywood Walk of Fame: stroll along to see the greats in film, music and the creative arts honoured in the sidewalk. Measure your hands and feet against the imprints of your favourite stars in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre: it’s an eclectic mix, from Marilyn Monroe to the Harry Potter cast.

Right next door is the Hollywood & Highland Center, an enormous Greek mythology-themed outdoor shopping mall that mixes designer stores with upscale restaurants and movie theatres, plus an amazing view of the Hollywood sign. There’s a marble ‘chaise longue’ on the top floor where you can pose with the sign just over your shoulder! The Academy Awards take place here every year, as well as most Hollywood film premieres: walk up the famous staircase like a star! Outside, you’ll come across out-of-work actors dressed convincingly as characters from the movies: you can have your picture taken with ‘Johnny Depp’ as Captain Jack, Spiderman and Batman or Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. You can also pick up a bus tour of the stars’ homes from Hollywood Boulevard, an enjoyable hour spent gazing at jaw-dropping mansions owned by the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith, Katy Perry and the Beckhams. Sunset Boulevard and the legendary Sunset Strip are next on your list. There are so many movie star sights – as well as a few grisly tales – that you’ll need to have your camera on hand. Paramount Studios is here: there’s a great backstage tour to be taken (paramount.com/studio). GIFT OF THE GABY

TV PRESENTER GABY ROSLIN WILL HOST THE NEW PRIDE OF BIRMINGHAM AWARDS IN SEPTEMBER. HERE, SHE TALKS TV, CHARITY, AND HER NEWFOUND LOVE OF OUR CITY! She is the much-loved household name who has charity at the heart of everything she does. Television and radio star Gaby Roslin is to host the inaugural Pride of Birmingham Awards in September, and came to the city recently to celebrate the event’s official launch.

of 19-year-old Stephen Sutton from Burntwood, Staffordshire, who died from bowel cancer in May. Having raised millions and become a social media phenomenon, Stephen was a shining example of how people wanted to reach out and help others through charity.

Gaby, who looks radiant and fit at 49, took centrestage at the launch party at the Town Hall and explained how important it is for Brummies to look deep within their communities and nominate the ordinary citizens who are doing important and work, often with little or no recognition.

“I have just been involved in Sport Relief and I’ve been involved in Children in Need for years,” Gaby said. “I’m doing something for Comic Relief, too.

Gaby said she was “touched” and “delighted” when she was asked by the Birmingham Mail to get involved and was close to tears when explaining what the awards will mean to the city’s unsung heroes. The mother-of-two said: “I think the judges are going to have a very, very difficult choice. I have been in TV and radio for nearly 30 years and I’ve met so many incredible people, so many people quietly going about their business without a pat on the back. Well, let’s pat them on the back!” She continued: “Thank you so much for inviting me and being part of it. I’m so honoured, I know I am going to cry.” The former Big Breakfast presenter said the awards were open to everyone and wants people to come forward to nominate anyone who deserves a special mention. “Anybody who’s had anybody look after them; anybody who’s gone through anything; anybody who’s looked after anybody who can nominate somebody,” she said. “Your friend, your sister, your brother, a nurse, anybody – it’s open to everybody. “There are a lot of unsung heroes and I think it’s time to sing their praises loudly. Let’s all celebrate the work they do.” Gaby applauded the astonishing fundraising work

issue 39

“I think people are very aware of that. I’m involved in very little charities and some of the biggest charities in the country. I think you realise that everybody wants to help and likes to help everybody else.” Gaby, who is currently hosting a radio chat show, co-presents Food Inspectors on BBC1 and the National Lottery Draws on Saturday nights. In March, she presented the 15-part entertainment show Sport Relief’s Top Dog on BBC Two in the run-up to Sport Relief. But hosting Pride of Birmingham will give Gaby the chance to explore and learn more about a city she finds “phenomenal. I don’t come from Birmingham,” she admitted. “But my mother-in-law does and my grandfather was born in Wolverhampton. “I’ve been to the city many times. The last time I was there was at Christmas to see one of my dearest friends, Gok Wan, and another friend of mine, John Partridge, in pantomime. It was one of the best pantos I’ve ever seen – and I’ve been to many. “The city itself is simply beautiful. I can’t believe the difference from when I first used to come here to the way it looks now. It’s phenomenal. “You have a modern city but you have also retained some beautiful old buildings. I was fascinated when I looked round the photographs at the Town Hall and saw some of the people who have appeared on its stage. What a line-up! And I must take my kids to Cadbury’s World – they’ll love it, I’m sure.”

THE PRIDE OF BIRMINGHAM AWARDS: HOW TO NOMINATE Do you know someone who has shown outstanding bravery, run phenomenal fundraising campaigns, or gone beyond the call of duty on behalf of others? The winners will have gone the extra mile, their courage and compassion an inspiration; they may have made a real difference in their community. They will come from all walks of life, from all age groups. From the emergency services hero who saves lives, to the teenager who campaigns to make life better, from the elderly community campaigner to the caring children who help others. They might include a tireless carer, an inspirational teacher who has changed young lives, a young achiever... it’s up to you to let us know about them. To nominate a person or group you think should win a Pride of Birmingham Award, tell the judges why they deserve recognition. Include the name, address and contact number of the person or group you are nominating. You should also include your own contact details so that organisers can get back to you should they require any further information. All nominations will be considered by the Pride of Birmingham judging panel after the closing date. ONLINE: Visit birminghammail.co.uk/ prideofbirmingham and complete the interactive form. BY POST: Send nominations to Pride of Birmingham, Birmingham Mail Newsroom, Fort Dunlop, Fort Parkway, Birmingham B24 9FF. IN PERSON: Drop your written nomination in at the Birmingham Mail’s city centre office in Great Western Arcade. Nominations must be received by Thursday, July 31, 2014. Winners will be notified directly by Pride of Birmingham, and will be invited to the September 26 awards. They will enjoy a VIP dinner reception at the Banqueting Suite of Birmingham Council House where they will rub shoulders with celebrity presenters, and then cross to the Town Hall for the ceremony.

As we start another summer of Big Brother, Tara Tomes muses on the nature of celebrity these days, and asks, who should be our real heroes? Is it just me or is the whole ‘celebrity’ thing getting a little bit boring? I moved house last month and whilst unpacking a thousand boxes I found some old Polaroid pictures (remember those days?) that I’d taken when I was about seven. One of them was a picture of my bedroom wall plastered in posters of Take That, Peter Andre and Backstreet Boys. How I miss the days of having idols. I still have heroes, of course – my parents, people around me, successful business people – but their pictures don’t take up every inch of my bedroom walls. Looking at this picture got me thinking about how much ‘celebrity’ has changed since I was bopping around in a tutu drinking a Soda Stream. What happened to true idols? Where did real celebrities go? Before the Directioners, Katy-Cats and Little Monsters against me, I know that there is talent out there but there’s also free ‘stars’ carving careers out of than column inches. When Big Brother first aired on Channel 4 back in 2000 it was an instant hit and I was hooked! The ultimate people-watching activity, it was fascinating to see what happened when a bunch of strangers were thrown into a house together and filmed. What none of us knew then was that it marked the start of the Reality TV generation and would change the face of ‘celebrity’ forever. We’ve had everything from Fame Academy and Pop Idol, to TOWIE and Made in Chelsea: new ‘celebrities’ are being created on every TV channel daily.

became ‘Katie Price – the business woman’ and it was acceptable to like her. Likewise, Posh Spice spent the best part of the early Noughties being mocked by Spice Girls fans and now Victoria Beckham has become a well-respected fashion designer and friend to Anna Wintour. Who saw that coming? In both instances it was their business acumen that boosted their popularity, rather than the tabloid gossip keeping them in the headlines. I’m happy to see business and success being thrown into the spotlight: whether it be Sir Alan Sugar and Peter Jones, or Team GB’s 2012 medal winners. This is absolutely who we should be looking up to.

CELEBS: Beliebers, join forces still some real a lot of talentnothing more

HEROES AND VILLAINS?

Over the past 10 years the ‘average man’ – by TV producer standards anyway – has been given a platform to become a celebrity and with that title, be catapulted on to the front of every national newspaper and into the pages of every gossip magazine. I admit to catching the odd episode of Big Brother, but I’m still not sold on the idea of these stars being idols to the next generation. Watching their sexual exploits and relationship drama isn’t quite the same as listening to the latest Madonna album or being in awe of Beatle-mania. Many criticise the influence the ‘new celebrity’ is having on the younger generation, but I believe it’s a reflection of our desire to make a quick buck. It has started to feel like anyone can become famous and we don’t seem all that concerned by why they’re on our screens and in our magazines. I remember how unpopular ‘Jordan – the glamour model’ was and then she

of gained a new carpet when sure part of it at the people at them in the who they happened Madonna and

Gossip keeps the world turning. The MailOnline’s Showbiz page gets 60 million views so who am I to judge, when I’m one of those people reading about what Rihanna wore last night and who Spencer Matthews is now dating. We all love a bit gossip! I have, however, apathy towards the red attending events. I’m is ageing but I often look being papped and stare hope I suddenly realise are. I seldom do. What to David Beckham, Brad Pitt? Being brought up in the pre-Google age I remember what it was like to celebrate talent so I’d just like to see some A-listers back in action and being used by PRs and brand managers.

I think that there’s a portion of society feeling the same way and over the past couple of years it seems that the new trend is to champion ‘real people’, which I’m in full support of. Just look at the inspirational Stephen Sutton; his story captured the hearts of millions and in his short life he created a legacy that will last way beyond my lifetime. I’m not saying that all celebrities have to be like Stephen – he’s one in a million – but it’s interesting to see what and who people relate to. Anyone that knows me will know that my Dad is working with Dee Kelly (Benefits Street’s ‘White Dee’) so will be quick to question my views in this column but actually she is just one of many people that the public has taken to. Likewise, I watched one of the stars of Gogglebox being interviewed on breakfast television the other morning and it was interesting to hear how the program has changed his life. Human beings are funny things… our imagination can be captured so easily and without explanation but I’m happy to see us regaining some of the control from TV producers and Simon Cowell, and championing our own celebrities rather than just the people gracing our newspapers every day. With that in mind, just have a think about who you look up to and who you’d have on your Bedroom Wall of Fame.

A DAY IN MY LIFE What’s it like to rise before dawn but still have enough energy to present a four-hour radio show? We asked Capital FM breakfast show presenter Dan Kelly to talk us through his day As long as I can remember I’ve always been a night person. As a teenager I used to lie in bed on school nights so I could listen to the radio and went through a computer game phase which would often last until the sun was rising.

06:00: The Capital Breakfast Show starts. Caffeine’s kicked in, Katy Poulsom, my co-presenter, is already telling stories which are starting to wake me up and then we’re off on a four-hour journey of music and gubbins.

Growing up, I then became part of the DJ circuit and had numerous late night radio shows. I was that friend who would see more moon than the sun.

10:00: Show ends. We sit in silence for ten minutes to recover from the verbal diarrhoea before scoffing some food (this is our lunchtime!). After that, we’ll listen back to some bits so we can berate ourselves, then listen to some proper presenters and applaud! We’ll also start planning some ideas for the show for the next day.

So the irony wasn’t lost on me when I was offered the biggest job of my life, the Capital breakfast show. A show which meant I’d have to get up around the time I normally went to bed. So what does a day in the life of a breakfast show DJ involve? Here’s an average morning for me: 05:00: Ok, I’m up. I’m not functioning but I’m alive. It feels like someone’s hit ‘ctrl alt del’ on my brain while it boots up. Then after a minute or so I’ll remember my name and fortunately remember just in time that leaving the house naked is illegal. 05:45: I don’t live far away so after a dozy stumble around the house I’m ready and parking up at the studio. It’s easier this time of year as it’s light when I drive to work: an unbelievable luxury when you spend nine months of the year getting up in darkness. Mix that in with some sunshine and I’m already planning a barbecue before I’ve even had a coffee.

Sometimes, we’ll have to record an interview with a guest that morning for a future show. This is one of our favourite things about the job. We love trying to speak to our guest on our level and try and get their personalities out a bit more. Sometimes it works and we’ll get to hear a revealing side to them away from what’s also being promoted. It doesn’t always work, but getting to meet the stars that we listen to and watch every day is something I still feel really lucky to do, even if not all of them are as pleasant as you’d hoped! After we leave the studio we’ve got our beady eyes everywhere and try to observe everything going on around us. The smallest little things often end up being the stuff we really get our teeth into on the show and get the best reaction - so watch out, Birmingham we’re watching you!

STRAWBERRY MERINGUE KISSES Use gorgeously plump British strawberries while they’re in season: we love the Sweet Eve variety!

TASTE OF SUMMER Celebrate Wimbledon with two British summer classics, grown locally and packed with flavour: fresh asparagus and juicy strawberries. These two easy recipes will guarantee you a trophy!

ASPARAGUS PISSALADIÈRE A delicious tart, hot or cold, and especially good for a picnic!

Makes: 24 Preparation time: 30 minutes • Cooking time: 2 hours, plus drying

Serves 8

You’ll need:

For the meringues You’ll need: 1 packet ready rolled puff pastry 750g red onions, peeled and thinly sliced 60g butter 2 tbsp olive or rapeseed oil 3 sprigs fresh thyme 1 sprig rosemary 1 bay leaf 2 tsp soft light brown sugar 2 bundles British asparagus 1 egg, beaten

What to do: Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas Mark 6. Melt the butter with the oil in a saucepan. Add the onions, stir well to coat with the butter, cover and cook on a gentle heat, stirring from time to time, for 30 minutes, until the onions are completely soft. Add the herbs and sugar, increase the heat and cook until the onions are caramelised. Leave to cool, discarding the herb sprigs and bay leaf. Place the ready rolled puff pastry sheet on a lightly greased baking sheet. Using a sharp knife, score a 2cm deep border around the outside of the pastry, making sure you don’t cut all the way through. Trim the asparagus as necessary, and cut in half. Pile the caramelised onions into the centre of the tart and spread out to the inner edge of the border. Place the asparagus on top, season and drizzle with olive oil. Brush the border with the beaten egg to glaze and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes until the pastry is risen and golden brown. Turn the oven down to 180°C/350°F/Gas Mark 4 and bake for a further 20 minutes or until the pastry is cooked through.

issue 39

5 large egg whites 250g caster sugar ½ tsp vanilla extract

For the strawberry cream 250g Sweet Eve strawberries, hulled and roughly chopped 25g caster sugar 2 tsp cornflour 175ml double cream

What to do: Preheat the oven to 120C/fan 100C/gas ½. Line two large baking trays with baking parchment or a silicone. For the meringues, whisk the egg whites in a large bowl with an electric whisk until stiff but not dry. Slowly add the sugar, just a dessertspoon at a time, whisking well between each addition. The meringue should be very thick and glossy. Whisk in the vanilla extract. Fit a large piping bag with a 2cm plain nozzle and pipe 48 small meringues. Bake in the centre of the oven for 2 hours or until firm and very dry. Turn off the oven but leave the meringues inside to dry out for at least 2 hours.

Put your freezer setting onto Fast Freeze, or clear some space in the rapid freezing section/coldest part of your freezer, at least an hour before adding the meringues. To make the filling, put the chopped strawberries, sugar and cornflour in a saucepan. Cook over a low heat for 4-5 minutes, stirring constantly to make a thick strawberry sauce. Leave to cool. Whip the cream until stiff peaks form then lightly fold in the cold strawberry sauce. Spoon the strawberry cream onto 24 of the meringue halves and sandwich together with the rest. Place into freezer-proof plastic containers, interleaving with baking parchment. Cover with tight-fitting lids, label and freeze for up to 2 months. To serve, remove the frozen meringues from the freezer and place on a serving plate or cake stand. Leave to thaw at room temperature for 30 minutes before serving. Pop into the fridge if leaving any longer. Eat the same day. For more recipes, go to sweetevestrawberry.co.uk

These work particularly well with chicken or you could try stuffed scallops with minced prawn and mango. I’d like to share a recipe with you: lamb cutlets with fresh herbs. If you’re not a fan of lamb you can always use chicken or pork instead – both are equally delicious!

Serves 2 as a main [serve with rice, flatbreads or crusty bread for dipping] What to do Place the fish and marinade ingredients in a bowl and leave to marinate for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, in a large, heavy-bottomed pan with a lid, heat a little vegetable oil gently. Add the onion, pepper and a pinch of salt, and sauté until soft, (for about 20 minutes). Don’t allow to brown. Next add the tomato and tomato puree, and cook for three minutes. Remove from the heat. Take out about half the vegetable mixture. Place the marinated fish on top of the remaining vegetables, then place the rest of the vegetables back on top of the fish. Pour the marinade ingredients into the pan too.

LAMB CUTLET WITH FRESH HERBS

Finally, add the fresh coriander and enough coconut milk to just cover. Return the pan to a low heat and gradually bring to a gentle boil (if you rush this, the coconut milk will split).

Ingredients:

Place the lid on and simmer for 10 minutes or until the fish is just cooked. Remove from the heat again and taste, add more lime juice, salt and pepper, if necessary. Garnish with coriander leaves.

24 HOURS IN EDGBASTON

Charlotte Harper of Lotty Harper Boutique Events, Brand Awareness & PR was born and brought up in Edgbaston. Here, she shares her idea of perfect day in Edgbaston Edgbaston is my stomping ground; I grew up here and so I’ve always loved the way it’s so calm and peaceful and yet so close to the city centre and its great shopping. But with new developments in recent years and the growing number of watering and eating holes combined with fantastic leisure facilities and arts venues, Edgbaston really has got to be one of the best places to live, work and play.

Cinema – there’s a fantastic selection of art-house films, live screenings of opera, theatre and dance plus all the new releases. And of course if the weather’s fine, Winterbourne or the Botanical Gardens are the perfect way to while away a sunny afternoon.

If I had 24 hours all to myself in Edgbaston, here’s what I’d do.

Come 5pm it’s time to check into The Edgbaston – the new boutique hotel and cocktail lounge. The combination of delicious cocktails, street food, top class unobtrusive service and a fantastic atmosphere makes The Edgbaston a great addition to Edgbaston’s nightlife. My favourite cocktail is The Clover Club 3000 which comes served with its own mini candy floss. I love it. And with the new private members’ club, Sovereign House, also arriving soon, things can only get better!

First thing in the morning, I’d take a walk around the edge of Edgbaston Golf Course. It’s not open to the public but as I’ve not long moved into a house on the edge of the course, it’s one of our special privileges. It’s both invigorating and calming, especially in the winter months when the steam rises off the greens. Next up would be meeting friends for a catch-up over breakfast at Edgbaston Priory Club. They do a wonderful Eggs Benedict there and the lounge is the perfect place to relax into the morning. Then it’s into the gym for a training session or a spot of Zumba or Body Rocker Fitness in the exercise studio. The new gym and exercise studio, with their panoramic views over the outdoor pool and tennis courts, are truly an inspirational place to work out. Honestly, on a beautiful sunny day, one could almost imagine you were in some country club on the Algarve. There is just nowhere like it in the city.

There is one ‘love of my life’ that I’d like to transplant into Edgbaston and that’s Harvey Nichols. So I know it’s disloyal but I would have to pop out of Edgbaston for an hour or so for a spot of personal shopping with the gorgeous Constantine.

What better way to round off the day than an evening meal at Simpsons – the most exquisite food and wine served in the most elegant setting.

I’d then head off to The Deli at Edgbaston for one of their delicious crayfish salads but not before popping into Simpsons to book my table for the evening and for a coffee and natter with Luke and Leo, known to his friends as ‘Easyjet’!

Then it’s a short walk home, fall into bed for a good night’s sleep before starting all over again. If only every day was like this!

In the afternoon I’d take in a spot of arts and culture and in Edgbaston we’re spoilt for choice. I’m looking forward to the concerts at the Barber Institute as part of the Birmingham International Jazz and Blues Festival. Or I could head down to the MAC

SIX WAYS TO SPEND YOUR SUMMER Ready to play? Looking for summer fun in Birmingham? Sarah Morris has a few ideas…

GO TO A FESTIVAL Birmingham runs lots of little festivals throughout the year, but it’s now also attracting some of the large scale ones such as Capital FM’s Fusion Festival and Wireless Festival, which is coming to Birmingham for the first time. On a more local scale however, look out for the Moseley Folk festival towards the end of the summer – always very popular and has a great atmosphere. Also keep an eye out for the first Birmingham Independent Food Fair taking place in September at Millennium Point.

British Summertime has arrived and as all Brits know, any spot of sunshine we get needs to be cherished and enjoyed. Luckily, if you reside in or around Birmingham, there are lots of things to do and places to go that involve getting outside and enjoying the fresh air, including a few beauty spots that are well worth a visit! To help you along with where to go and what to do in our fair city during the summer months, here’s my top six activities that should help you make the most of the great weather.

GO TO A BEER GARDEN! This is the easiest option and Birmingham has some great pubs with good beer gardens. Top spots include the Lord Clifden on Great Hampton Street – it doesn’t look much from the outside, but once you get through the entrance, it quickly opens out. In the summer and most Bank Holidays think sun, beer garden, live DJ and BBQ until late in the evening. Other pubs with a good beer garden include the Garden

House on Hagley Road, The Plough in Harborne – a particular favourite of mine - and, if you want to head slightly further out of the city centre, pay a visit to the Fighting Cocks in Moseley.

created by the expanse of water in front of you.

RELAX IN THE PARK Despite being typically known for its industrial make-up – at least in the past if not so much now – Birmingham has some fantastic parks and green spaces, even right in the city centre. The best place to go would be Cannon Hill Park for its vast open spaces, gardens and general friendly buzz – take a picnic with your family and friends and make an afternoon of it. You can even take your roller skates! If you want to go out of Birmingham a little, Sutton Park in Sutton Coldfield is also fantastic.

As a girl who grew up in a canal town, I know how much fun it can be to spend the day with friends on a canal boat. With Birmingham being home to one of the most intricate canal networks in the world, we’re suitably placed to enjoy this. To hire a canal boat, check out the website Away4aday where you will find advice and options to hire from a half day, to a short holiday. You could of course just take a trip as a passenger on a group tour, but where’s the fun in that when you could be in the driving seat?

VISIT THE RESERVOIR

SPEND AN AFTERNOON IN THE HILLS

This doesn’t sound particularly interesting, I know, but it is! I visited the reservoir in Edgbaston for the first time after living in Birmingham for 10 years, and I wondered why on earth I’d not been before. It’s a beautiful expanse of water, wildlife and greenery that gives you a sense of being far away from the city. It’s about 1.75 miles if you want to take a walk or run around it, although it’s equally nice just to park up and sit in the grass area by the car park and soak up the sun and peaceful atmosphere

As much as I love Birmingham, sometimes it is nice to head out a few miles and get back in touch with nature. The great thing about Birmingham is that once you’re out, you’re surrounded by beautiful countryside. Two must-visit places are the Lickey Hills in Lickey End and the Clent Hills. Both offer up acres of hills, woodlands and open space with absolutely stunning views that go on for miles. If you haven’t been to either, make this your goal for this summer.

WIN DR LEVY SKINCARE WORTH £455 Dr Levy is the expert skincare collection available at the Air Aesthetics Clinic (airaesthetics.co.uk, 0845 519 5377). We’ve teamed up with them to offer one lucky reader a Dr Levy Intense Stem Cell Eye Booster Concentrate and a Dr Levy Intense Cell Booster Cream: the total cost of these cutting-edge products is £455. And that’s not all: the winner will also have the chance to enjoy a private skin consultation with Air Aesthetics Clinic’s Dr Claire Oliver (BDS), which normally costs £250. A leading skincare expert, we asked Dr Oliver to share a few thoughts on summer suncare. She recommends the advanced sun protection range Heliocare to target the 21st century›s public enemy number one - the sun. “Sunshine is an attack on the skin, and one way the skin defends itself is to make pigment,” explains Dr Oliver. “Over time this damage is working its way to the surface resulting in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, sagging jaw lines, patches of mottled pigmentation and age spots. It’s actually ultraviolet light that does the damage. That means not only summer sunshine with its UVB rays (ones that cause sunburn) but also UVA rays, the ‘ageing ones’ which are present in daylight all year round and penetrate the skin more deeply than UVB”. The solution she recommends, is to invest in sunscreen such as Heliocare which protects against both UVA and UVB. Heliocare is clinically and scientifically proven to protect the skin from accelerated ageing and photodamage.
