First thing first! Buy yourself a CLEAN CHEEKY collared blouse to your collection. Why not in PASTEL TONES (personally I believe, it’s going to stay here for a long, long time). Anyways, go through the magazine, pick out styles from our style360 and trend report to keep you upgraded in April. These were just a few. We have Net a Porter online Shopping website with us in this issue, where you’ll find amazing branded clothes like Stella McCartney, Kenzo, Michael Kors, Armani and so many others. Also tag along to new makeup trends this season where Urban Decay and L’Oreal have

definitely sold me out! & some other good stuff you must try to keep your skin healthy in summer. Besides that our writers have put quite some energy in their enticing and playful writing in our news and written features. So get hooked to what they have to say about what’s happening in the fashion industry today. Headliners like DVF taking over L.A for her exhibition! (Do check it out), a trip to Dubai to get know the hard working Head of Textiles and Design at Heriot Watt University- one and only – Vanessa Northway and our bonuses along the way! But most importantly, celebrating women of today- a firm photoshoot that will say it all. Well that’s all the time I have, enjoy flipping our pages over and over again because it’s going to stay here for a long time.

W

hat was it about fashion that caught your attention? My dad was a huge influence when growing up. He really encouraged my artistic side and he was quite happy for me to get some experience in art. I always had an art school project going on or he would sign me up for pottery class and drawing classes. He always knew as long as you went along the right path, it didn’t necessarily mean that you would get a career out of it. Back in those days, very long time ago, people were concerned that art was something that would not be able to make you a salary or something you could make a career out of. It was always something to do with art but I was just never quite sure what it was. When I was about 16, he found a stitching class for me and it just transformed everything. I suddenly realized this whole world of fashion on how people make careers out of it. What made you think fashion was for you? From about the age 16 to 18, I surrounded myself with a lot of people in the textile industry. At that time, I didn’t really know anybody personally that was in the fashion industry but there were a lot of textile, print and jewelry designers. I had a choice to go to a local college and get foundation course and the course was in fashion so I thought it’s just one year so I’ll try it and if I don’t like it then I could do something else. There was few months of trying everything; graphic design, fashion design, jewelry design, product design. So, we had couple of months trying everything. It was just fashion all the way for me I guess, the making of the garment mainly. I’ve been making my own garment since I was about 9, 10 years old. I would get a pair of jeans and ripping them up or stitching embroidery onto them. I’ve always been making things. It was the natural way to go.

50

Who were your influential idols that inspired you back in the day? Well, I had a teacher at the local college when I was doing my foundation course, she was called Kim. She is still there till this day. I was about 18, 19 at the time, and she was my fashion teacher, from Winchester Art school. later when I went to university, a teacher called Vivian, I still keep in contact with; taught me at the university I went to. She’s always been there for me, she’s very proud of me. She was absolutely amazing; she was the one that kept me going because fashion can be a quite hard industry, very tiring and long hours. Have you ever thought of getting into another field other than fashion? No –gigglesDid you ever consider doing something else in your beginning years before stitching came along? Was there something else you wanted to pursue? There was a time I did consider going into some kind of social work, social care. When I was 14, my dad got me a job at the local youth center, I volunteered for 2 years. Through that I got to work with a whole array of different people. I also helped with girls and young women; I would go to seminars and see what girls needed. I also helped with children with abuse and foster homes. I thought social service was what I should go into and keep fashion as a hobby but it wouldn’t have been able

As soon I got out of university and started work, it became fashion, purely fashion.

laDame

How would you describe fashion at the Heriot Watt University in Dubai? Well, I am really proud. I truly believe we are a very ambitious university; there isn’t anything that we can’t do. If the team and I want to do something, there is nothing that will stop us. There’s always a full support and network of people trying to help us implement it. That is what I love about this place, it is always willing to grow and always willing to develop, of course there is also opportunity to stop, reflect, look and see how things are going. So, I’m very proud to be part of Heriot Watt University, for sure. I will be here a long, long time. How would you describe your city’s fashion? London or Dubai. Dubai is still quite a new city, if you think about it where it was 10 years ago. It looks completely different and there weren’t must industries around. Fashion seemed to be one of the things that came along but now look at all the retail outlets we have here, it’s just astronomical, absolutely amazing. London is different, I think because the fashion industry has been around lot longer, also the textile industry. The UK has more history of these industries but that’s not to say Dubai is behind, not in any shape or form. I look at what we have here now because of its position, it draws in designers from all over the world. What we have here is more multicultural whereas London you need to search around for non-local designer brands. London is very fast moving, street fashion. In London, fashion starts from the street and pretty much works its way up. I think Dubai will get there.

Women should just keep their dream and goal going until the day they have achieved it.

Do you consider yourself an artist? No. I think through university, yes I was always painting and drawing. I always had a sketchbook with me. I was like a pained artist that could never get a painting right. What would be your tip for young fashion designers and entrepreneurs? The most important, personal skill you should have is ambition and dedication. What is your vision and thought on women? I think we have a lot of choices now for us. I think it’s very difficult to wake up in the morning and think who you are today and who do I want to be today. If you’re a woman and you’ve got your support from your friends and your family, then I think we are fine. I think in terms of women in the work place, that has very much changed, there is very little stigma now as they used to be say. Now women are taking jobs all over the place and high levels, so that’s quite a great achievement. I still love women like Vivienne Westwood who I just think is absolutely crazy and inspirational. I look at where women like her were and how they started and where they are now. They have had all that longevity in the fashion industry and they’ve never stopped, instead just adapted.

he ‘buttoned up’ trend is taking over the streets! And no, we are not talk ing about looking like a schoolteacher or a librarian - this style can be worn in many different ways and is perfect for layering. The simplicity of the shirt on its own also makes it a go-to favorite. The usual formal button-ups have given a direction to a style that is considerably more “Sexy and Chic”. It can be the perfect outfit for going out with friends not just for wearing at work.

Buy these looks at Net-A-Po rter ONLI NE STORE

The focus of the highly popular buttoned-up shirts has given rise to accessorizing the collar area. This can be particularly appropriate for when you want to style your look for a particular occasion. There is an array of possibilities, whether you want to dress up for a date or if you are looking for a laidback style for going out shopping with friends.

S L A FLOR

To achieve a sophisticated look, simply by adding some shiny studs to the edges of the collar - and instantly the attention will be drawn to your new style. If you are bold enough, then try wearing a sparkly bow-tie to show off your neck area. To make it a bit more young and casual or for a weekend look, add the bow to a denim shirt to make an impact.

K O O L N A E L C S/S 2014-15 -Trend Report

This is not about dusting off any old flannel and calling it a trendy look - the current climate calls for something more refined and well put together. When you try the ‘look’ for the first time, it can take some getting used to - and you may feel very covered up and geeky so you will need to compensate by adding some ‘glamour’. By that I mean that you could add a splash of color by combining the shirt with a jacket that will be perfect for spring! The rise of the ‘add-on’ collar!! The love of collars has no boundaries! Several different styles of collar have arisen and today you see them everywhere - as knitted or embroidered, glittery or sparkly, pointy or round. There are even collars shaped as necklaces, which will help you update any plain sweater. Many of these collars are now pointy or rounded ‘Peter Pan’ style, and many are minimalistic (and sometimes barely there!)

Cats all the way! What I find so comfortable in these collars is that there is no need to buy a blouse to wear under neath your sweater, you simply wear an add on collar instead! No need for bulky layers when you can add a collar to any outfit. Interestingly, I have been noticing that the newest way to emphasize the collar is just by leaving it bare and buttoned. No additives, pure minimalism. laDame

omewhat shocking when one looks at the improvements technology and science have led to! From computers to tablets and deserts to fully developed cities. Dubai also experienced this alarming yet amazing transformation since it won the EXPO 2020; this accomplishment has opened many doors, interms of fashion also.

This month La Dame takes you to the fashion world of Dubai. Not long ago,Dubai was just a desert, where Trade Centre would be the only corporate hub of the city! However, today it has become a very important city not only for UAE but also the entire world because while other Arab countries continue to suffer from violence and turmoil,Dubai with its tall skyscrapers continues to impress and charm the world.By 2020,Dubai will become what we never expected but hoped and dreamed off. While this destination continues to prosper in business, education, and media, the fashion industry is also gradually developing where a lot of effort is being put to make this side of the market flourish.Dubai has now various opportunities for those looking to invest in fashion and even for those who call themselves SHOPAHOLICS.Besides the skyscrapers and night life, what attracts elite tourists more is Dubai’s fashion hub. Henceforth, many large malls have been built in Dubai which contain low-end to high-end brands like Ralph Lauren,Armani, till Lacoste and much more - making it easier to shop according to one’s affordability. What’s interesting to note is the effort being taken by the Government to cater to the needs of specifically those interested in fashion.

The Fashion District has recently been launched at the Mall of Emirates which is helping Dubai climb the ladder of success in the fashion industry. This district, launched by the Al Futtaim Group, is a 100 million Dhs project based on 5000 sq. m and includes 30 new stores including boutiques of designers like Alexander McQueen and Diane Von Furstenberg. Considering the amount of money being spent just on the fashion sector, there is no doubt that Dubai can easily add on to the list of fashion cities like Paris and New York.Mall of Emirates is now extending it’s Fashion District which will be completed by either 2015 or 2016.

esides that ,The Dubai Mall fashion avenue continues to not only be a tourist attraction but also the perfect place for those looking to buy high end apparel and accessories such as Louis Vuitton,Prada,Gucci and more. The shops are created in an exquisite way along with the hallways of the fashion avenue. This allows shoppers to get the best

visual experience that they have ever seen before at malls.

Dubai is exactly where fashionistas should be because there is more to it than just the malls! Dubai hosts many fashion shows and other related events along with parties throughout the year. In April2013,Fashion Forward also kicked off in Dubai which includes a series of fashion shows by well-known designers like Tahir Sultan and Amira Haroon just to name a few. This event is also taking place again in April 2014, where more interesting fashion looks are expected to be seen.

The beautiful location Madinat Jumeirah was selected for this event since it has a vast area where fashion shows can be held. On the other hand, The Dubai Fashion Week that started in 2005, still continues to surprise us every year with new designers and exotic locations.Fashion events in DFW include, The Bride Show, Sportswear, Jewelry exhibitions, and Charitable fashion foundations.

In 2020,what will take Dubai to the next level in the fashion industry is the Dubai Design District or D3 that will be created opposite the Business Bay area and is expected to create more opportunities for designers, marketers and promoters along with men and women looking for work in this sector. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE announced in June 2013 that a new district will be created in Dubai, dedicated to developing the Emirate’s fashion, design and luxury sectors. The district will be open to any enterprise, designer or brand related to fashion or designing and will help Dubai reach the peak of its success ladder.Over the years,Dubai has become a renowned location for important events like Art Dubai and Dubai International Film Festival. The opening of this district will lead to more events being hosted further resulting in more number of visitors which is expected to rise to around 20 million by 2020. Hopefully in future, the Design District will hit it’s peak that’ll change the Dubai tourist appearance into a Fashion HUB. laDame 66
