WHITE COLLAR REASSEMBLED
M
COLLECTION SELL
y collection revolves around a girl who dresses like a boy but spoilt like a girl….. who is not afraid to wear contemporary pieces and make them look ready to wear and easy-going. My girl can pull off menswear and still feel like a woman. And Maraget Zhang represents exactly who I design for. She is Asian Australian living in Sydney, who is a successful stylist, photographer, entrepreneur, creative director, famous Instagram star and a law student. Zhang is only 22 who has yet to graduate Law School. Her style on the other hand speaks volume. The art of layering garments especially outerwear is her signature way of dressing, but also to wear menswear silhouettes and still look feminine. The concept of my collection is about reworking, deconstructing and then reassembling workwear to make them look YOUTHFUL, GENDER FLUID AND CONTEMPORARY. Most of the silhouettes my garment range include androgynous looks where “The man and the woman share the same silhouette and fabric, and still be themselves”. I took inspiration from menswear designers who helped me set the mood for my collection like Public School NYC, Craig Green, Jacquemus and Raf Simons. Especially the 80’s era where Armani classics and Zoot suits were a big thing, i tried to bring them back with a modern aproach. Music is a big part of this collection where I break down the lyrics to “A Working Class Hero” by John Lennon and explain how as youth we are forced to be in a confined environment where we have to pick a career and move on with our lives. A subject about the forceful nature and the difficulties one faces to be in the corporate and white collar positions. A working class hero is about not letting our childhood not die but relive once we grow up to be as young adults. Hence you will see verses around the collection in a sports/casual manner to bring the words to life. My Design direction is focused on deconstructing workwear where I explore folded collars, relocating pieces of a formal jacket & a shirt and giving it a conceptualized outlook to them. There are wraps and ties that I added to my collection which play a big role. As it gives a new perspective to the formal wear and allowing the garments to be worn in a more natural form. Smaller details like buttonholes and buttons are used in a modern and unique manner, breaking traditional norms to office wear. The fabrics used in the garment ranges include traditional textiles like wool/cashere and suiting fabric, Japanese Toyobo cotton and butter crepe. The suiting fabrics used are lighter in weight due the season forecast of spring and summer. Lighter cottons are used instead of shirting fabric to bring freshness to workwear. 2
