LOCALNEWS DARLINGTON COLLEGE SECURES GOVERNMENT INVESTMENT A £600k Government investment will lead to the creation of two new training centres at a North East college. Darlington College has secured funds from the Strategic Development Fund to create a business hub for professional qualifications and a hi-tech training centre for the advanced manufacturing and automation/robotics sector.

“It will be industry specific and the centres will transform how we work with companies and public sector organisations.” Other improvements include transforming the existing Gateway area of the college

into study areas and meeting rooms, with a conference venue for business events. For more information on opportunities at Darlington College visit www.darlington.ac.uk. Darlington College

Both areas will be pivotal in the upskilling of the workforce for employers, including the new Darlington Economic Campus – which is home to the Government’s six powerhouse departments. Curriculum manager for professional qualifications Sam Eason said: “This is perfect timing for the college when the country is struggling to find skilled labour. “We will be offering professional qualifications right across the chartered institutes, in accountancy, procurement, management, project management and HR.

THE FAMILY

A NORTH EAST businessman has brought a top award back to Sedgefield, three decades after his father won it the first time. The Impeccable Pig recently celebrated being awarded the title of AA Inn of the Year 2021 by leading hospitality standards agency, AA. And the win has created somewhat of a family tradition after owner, John Adamson, learned that his late father achieved the same accolade in 1986 when he owned the Dun Cow Inn. The AA praised the Grade II listed building for “high-quality specs such as seven-foot beds, large round tin baths and over-sized walk-in showers” and the “delicious food” served in the bar and restaurant. John is delighted to have followed in his father’s footsteps.

“Being named the best in the country is cause for celebration enough, but it feels even more special after learning about my father’s accomplishment in 1986,” he said. “It’s brilliant to bring the award back to Sedgefield and achieving it is a testament to the hard work of our staff after facing

such a difficult year.” The Impeccable Pig currently offers 12 individually decorated rooms, including two new master suites. For more information, or to book, visit https://www.impeccablepig.co.uk/ Darlington Today | 7

DARLINGTON SCHOOL MAKES MENTAL HEALTH A PRIORITY A LOCAL primary school is celebrating after being recognised for its work on mental health.

Springfield Academy mental health lead Julie Waistell celebrates the school’s PSHE quality mark with pupils (left to right) Liliana, Nicholas, Annie-Rose and Aidan, all aged six

Springfield Academy has been reaccredited by Darlington Borough Council for the quality of its personal, social and health education, which is considered a vital element in maintaining good mental health and wellbeing.

STAFF, rather than diners, will be raising a glass at the North East’s top restaurant, after its head sommelier won a prestigious travel scholarship. Austrian-born Daniel Stojcic joined the two Michelin star, The Raby Hunt, earlier this year after a career that has seen him dedicated to building his wine knowledge and passion.

And achieving the PSHE Quality Mark has been made more impressive following the challenges schools have faced during the pandemic. Year 2 teacher Laura Monkman, who helped collate the portfolio of evidence for council consideration, said: “The sense of community does come across strongly in the evidence and there wasn’t a single negative comment in the feedback questionnaires we got from parents, which was lovely.

“We have two mental health leads, Jen Foster and Juliet Waistell, who are there for staff and children, and even a pet therapy dog, Charlie, who works with the children and families if there are any social or emotional issues or poor attenders.

“Mental health has become so important and this accreditation recognises that we have made it a priority.” The accreditation will be made available to Ofsted during future inspections.

MAYOR WELCOMES LATEST GOVERNMENT AGENCY MOVING TO DARLINGTON Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has today (19 November) welcomed news that yet another Government agency is set establish a base in Darlington, bringing even more jobs to the region. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is the latest Government agency pledging to increase its presence outside of London, establishing a new office in the town alongside Government’s new Economic Campus. It was previously announced that a number of major departments – including the Treasury, Department for International Trade, Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and the Office of National Statistics – would come to the area, which is already home to the Department for Education. Now proposals have been approved for a CMA Microeconomics Unit in the region, which will take on the CMA’s existing economic research and evaluation function, produce the annual State of Competition report and carry out research into reforms to improve the productivity of the economy. The CMA’s State of Competition project is also being expanded to consider the impact of competition on consumers at different income levels. 8 | Darlington Today

THE RABY HUNT’S SOMMELIER WINS PRESTIGIOUS TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP…

“The Competition and Markets Authority is just the latest Government agency to announce its move to the town and Government’s Northern Economic Campus, delivering more good-quality, well-paid civil service careers for people across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool, on top of the hundreds that have already been pledged. This show people living here now, and those looking for jobs in the future, that you don’t need move to a big city like London to succeed – you can stay local but go far. “We’re doing all we can do to help these departments relocate, settle in and take advantage of local talent, and I hope to welcome many more soon.”

Daniel’s entry, which was an essay on the reason why he’d like to visit the wineries in Languedoc and Roussillon in South East

Daniel Stojcic, head sommelier at The Raby Hunt

But that’s not the only exciting piece of news for the highly ambitious young sommelier. Prior to joining The Raby Hunt, Daniel worked at the acclaimed, Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant, NOBLE. Holywood, just outside of Belfast where he took the title of Ireland’s Sommelier of the Year. And that means that he will also now be travelling to Cyprus to compete for the ASI Best Sommelier of Europe and Africa 2021. For further information about the restaurant, visit www.therabyhuntrestaurant.co.uk

DARLINGTON

Discussions over the Darlington Microeconomics Unit are ongoing, but it will safeguard and create 25 direct roles, as well as creating more in the supply chain. Mayor Houchen said: “This is more amazing news for Darlington, once again showing Government is committed to levelling up, bringing more jobs to the region and tying us ever-closer to Whitehall. This will put us at the heart of decision-making and policy like never before as civil servants understand the opportunities and issues faced outside of the capital, informing their work.

And now that passion has been rewarded, with the news that Daniel has been awarded the Gerard Basset Travel Scholarship, giving him a £5000 bursary to travel to a part of the world where he can expand his wine knowledge.

France, won him first prize and he is now hoping to make the trip next year.

PETS AT HOME Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen

The move to Darlington is part of the CMA’s wider relocation scheme, which will also see an office established in Manchester. CMA Chief Executive Andrea Coscelli said: “Last year I pledged that the CMA would get closer to the needs of people right across the UK. Since then, we have taken action on issues from refunds on package holidays to tackling excessive pricing on key drugs. Now we are going a step further and bringing our own offices and staff closer to more of the people we serve. “Manchester and Darlington will be ideal locations for our teams whether we’re ensuring fairness in the tech sector or doing vital research to inform future work. “There are bright and talented people everywhere and we want to do our part to give them the opportunities they deserve.” Recruitment has already begun for other roles across the region and as more become available, they will be advertised on Teesvalley.jobs

RYANAIR’S 2022 SUMMER SCHEDULE FROM TEESSIDE AIRPORT NOW ON SALE Local people looking to get away for some summer sun can now book their flights from Teesside International, as Ryanair’s summer 2022 flights go on sale.

a one-stop service between Teesside and Esbjerg in Denmark, travelling via Aberdeen but without any need for passengers to leave the plane.

Thanks to a popular season this year, despite the uncertainty surrounding international travel due to the coronavirus pandemic, Ryanair, Europe’s No1 airline, is continuing its commitment to Teesside International.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “The fantastic uptake of this year’s summer flights shows that people are really eager to get away after a difficult 18 months, and that support has meant that Ryanair is continuing to back our airport once again by putting next year’s tickets on sale now.

The airline will be running a twiceweekly service on Tuesdays and Saturdays to Majorca from 29 March to 29 October, with Faro, Portugal, also running every Wednesday and Saturday between 30 March and 29 October. Flights to the Greek island of Corfu will depart on Fridays from June. The summer flights also join Ryanair’s service from Teesside to Alicante, which has become a year-round service due to local demand, and which departs every Monday and Friday. The news came soon after it was revealed Loganair will begin operating

even bigger and better summer next year, which will also see the return of flights to the likes of Jersey and Bulgaria and the recently announced Dublin and Southampton routes. “Of course, we’re not slowing down in trying to secure more flights to even more popular destinations. And as we do, we’ll continue to steal a march on our already ahead of schedule plans to return Teesside Airport to profit.”

“Thanks to this vote of confidence in our amazing airport, people from across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool can get to some of the most popular summer hotspots in just a few short hours without the tedious travel times to airports such as Newcastle, Leeds Bradford or Doncaster, with our freshly redeveloped terminal delivering a fast, efficient and friendly service.

A spokesperson for Ryanair said: “Ryanair, Europe’s No.1 airline, is committed to re-building the UK’s aviation and tourism industries. We are excited to continue working with Teesside Airport and to connect passengers in the North East to their favourite holiday destinations next summer including Alicante, Corfu, Faro and Majorca.”

“With the relaxation of the vast majority of international travel restrictions, our airport is in a brilliant position for an

Brimming with Beatlemania, we decided to make a pilgrimage to the Beatles Museum which is just a short walk from the hotel. Over three floors you can chart the careers of John, Paul, George and Ringo from their earliest days in the Cavern club. It’s jam packed with fascinating memorabilia and definitely worth a look. It isn’t all together surprising that the city has taken every opportunity to exploit its celebrity connection. You can go on a Yellow Submarine water tour or get your own guide that will take you on a walking tour in the footsteps of the Beatles – no stone has been left unturned in cashing in on their fame.

But thankfully Liverpool is about so much more. The Royal Albert Dock has been completely transformed with cool bars, cafes and restaurants, along with art, music and museums. The city is very proud of its heritage and showcases it at every opportunity – which is not the slightest bit surprising. For foodies there is also plenty to enjoy, which is always an important part of any trip we take. From Roski, set up by a former Masterchef winner, to the London Carriage Works - a fine dining experience part of the Hope Street Hotel - Liverpool is a city simply packed with joy.

And while we can’t wait to get on a plane, equally we can’t wait to plan a return visit.

A bronze statue of the four Liverpool Beatles stands on Liverpool Waterfront

SCOUSE SURPRISE… Bernice Saltzer forgoes the pleasures of foreign travel for a break closer to home…

“How about Liverpool”? said my husband. “I’ve never been there in years.”

For those of us who love to travel, it’s been a hard year or so. That need for a change of scenery is vital, particularly if you’ve been cooped up working from home over the past 18 months.

As a sucker for a Scouse accent (I suspect due to too many years devoted to Brookside) it seemed a great idea; the chance to make a lightning visit to reacquaint ourselves with this fabulous city.

With foreign travel still very limited a few months ago, we decided that a night away somewhere that doesn’t usually appear high on our agenda might be just the answer. 28 | Darlington Today

First decision – where to stay. And what better hotel to choose than one which pays homage to Liverpool’s most famous sons, The Fab Four? The Hard Day’s Night hotel could so easily have been

tacky but it’s absolutely beautifully done – combining the right amount of fascinating memorabilia with both elegance and style. We arrived to an amazing surprise – because it was our anniversary we had been upgraded to the John Lennon suite, complete with white grand piano, a wraparound balcony with views across the city and a stunning sitting room and bedroom. That generosity of spirit is something that we came across time and time again in the city. Darlington Today | 29

Will Writing for Parents Preparing a Will is probably a task you would prefer not to think about as the festive period draws closer. The New Year, however, is the perfect time for parents to plan responsibly for the future and ensure that their children are protected, both financially and welfare arrangements, should the worst happen.

Financial arrangements Children cannot inherit under an estate until they reach 18 but this age can be raised to 21 or 25 if you felt 18 might be too young to inherit substantially. A child’s inheritance will be managed by the people you nominate to act under the Will as trustees. Trustees will manage the inheritance and can utilise funds for the benefit of the child in certain circumstances. This may include payment of a regular allowance, assistance with the costs of raising the child or paying school fees or higher education costs. 30 | Darlington Today

Who would you want to take on that important role of managing your children’s money if you were not here?

Guardianship Appointing a guardian for your children simply involves you choosing exactly who will look after them when you pass away and writing this in your Will. Often this may be grandparents, siblings or friends but consider would they have a similar outlook on raising children? Would the children have to move schools? Who may have a house big enough or simply who could cope? Making the choice whilst you’re alive can save confusion and family fall outs at the time. Writing a Will through solicitors is often easier and costs less than people expect and whilst it can seem like one of those tasks to put off until tomorrow, the best time to start the process is right now whilst it is fresh in your mind. Make your New Year’s resolution to be a responsible parent and make a Will to protect your family.
