HEARTHROB TRISTAN GEMMILL MADE HIS NAME IN SERIES SUCH AS CASUALTY AND CORONATION STREET – AND HE’S NOW ON HIS WAY TO HAVE A “BEASTLY” TIME IN BILLINGHAM.

HE CHATTED TO BERNICE SALTZER…

If you wanted to ask a quick question based around actor Tristan Gemmill, talking to him helps you formulate the perfect conundrum.

In what show did Tristan have to “shoot the baddy, kiss the girl and do a bit of karaoke?”

It’s the actor’s description of his time spent in the West End show, The Bodyguard, taking on the role made famous on film by Kevin Costner.

“It was a fantastic experience,” said Tristan.

“It’s great being in a musical when you don’t have to sing and instead you listen to the amazing voices of firstly Beverley Knight and then Alexandra Burke night after night!”

While Tristan might have dodged the singing bullet that particular time, it may have finally caught up with him as he heads to Billingham Forum Theatre this festive season to appear in Beauty and The Beast.

“Yes I think I’m going to have to do some singing this time,” he revealed with a laugh.

Playing The Beast also comes with other challenges and certainly stands out from Tristan’s last two stints in panto.

“I’ve previously played Captain Hook in Peter Pan and the Sherriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood,” he said.

“You know what you have to do when you’re the baddy, terrorise the children and get the audience to boo at you.

“It’s very different when you’re playing The Beast who isn’t really a baddy, maybe just perhaps a bit grumpy, at least at first!”

It’s a production that Tristan is looking forward to being part of –and also heading back to the North East.

“I remember appearing in Newcastle once in February and seeing what everyone talks about, people walking around with no coats on despite the fact it was freezing,” he said.

“I was told it was like a badge of honour!”

While theatre may be his current focus, Tristan is no stranger to television and had long stints in two of the country’s most enduring series.

He spent four years in Casualty as Dr Adam Trueman and is probably best remembered as Tracy Barlow’s estranged husband Robert Preston in Coronation Street, who was shot in the 2019 Christmas Day episode.

“It was fantastic to be part of something like Coronation Street for so long,” he said.

“It’s a real family and I enjoyed all of my time there but it’s also quite nice to get back into the acting loop which is a constant mix of insecurity and excitement.”

Tristan will be back on our tv screens next year having just filmed an episode of the detective series Father Brown, plus another top secret project which he says is “very exciting.”

But luckily nobody has to wait that long to see him in action as Beauty and the Beast opens at the Forum on 3 December.

“Panto is such an important part of theatre,” he said.

“And we know after the last few years everyone is very happy that it’s back.”

TICKETS ON SALE FOR THIS YEAR’S NYMR LIGHT SPECTACULAR EVENT

Tickets are now on sale for the annual Light Spectacular event ran by North Yorkshire Moors Railway. This hugely popular audio and visual sensory experience will depart from Pickering station every evening during October Half-Term, from the 22nd to the 30th October 2022 at 6pm and 7.45pm.

Tickets for this family fun and interactive journey, pulled by a heritage steam train, are £30 per

person, and include an hourlong illuminated experience from Pickering to Levisham station. To keep you entertained the NYMR’s compare, Voice Over Man, from the telly box, will be on hand and get you in the mood for a party. Passengers also become part of the show with a synchronised flashing wristband which passengers wear for the duration of the journey.

With carriages adorned with 17,000 LEDs, from the moment you enter the platform, spot the train and then climb on board, the whole family will be fully immersed in colour, light and sound that will get you dancing in your seat.

TRAINEE TEACHERS GET A BIG TICK…

THE next generation of teachers proved to be top of the class after completing their professional qualifications.

Trainees from across the North-East and North Yorkshire have spent the past year learning their craft in schools all over the region as part of the Carmel Teacher Training Partnership. At their recent graduation ceremony, at Carmel College, Darlington, the teachers were urged to inspire children in their learning.

Around 85 per cent of primary and secondary trainees at CTTP received a merit or distinction

for their Post-Graduate Certification in Education 2022.

Four of the trainee teachers’ work was so exceptional that it was considered worthy of publication by CTTP’s partner, Leeds Trinity University.

More than 90 per cent of trainees have secured teaching positions within and beyond the North-East in state and independent schools.

CTTP director of teacher training Monica Shepherd said she was delighted with the results achieved by both primary and secondary trainees.

“The 2022-23 cohort are now well established in their school placements and are already making good progress,” she said. “We look forward to another set of excellent results next summer.”

Anyone interested in training as a teacher or would like to undertake a school experience day or a volunteering position, can contact applications via the DfE ‘Apply’ portal, which opens in October for teacher training in September 2023.

Rockliffe Hall’s Executive Housekeeper wins in The AA Hospitality Awards

Diane Payne, Rockliffe Hall’s Executive Housekeeper, has won the AA Housekeeper of the Year Award.

She was named as the winner at the recent AA Hospitality Awards 2022 held at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House, London.

Recognising the excellence of hotels, restaurants and their teams across the UK, the AA Hospitality Awards are one of the industry’s most prestigious and highly

anticipated events. This year’s swards, hosted by Gabby Logan and spanning 15 categories, named the best hotels, restaurants, and spas across the UK, and celebrated remarkable figures from the industry with awards such as the Lifetime Achievement Award, Chef’s Chef Award and more.

The AA Housekeeper of the Year award, sponsored by Sealey, recognises outstanding commitment and performance, identifying a housekeeper who

goes above and beyond the call of duty.

The event is taking place on 5 November and will include a License to Thrill, James Bond spectacular.

All eyes will be on the North East as Newcastle kicks off the tournament with the opening fixture played at St James’ Park. The toon will also host Scotland during the tournament with New Zealand also staying close by in York.

Although its free to attend, entry is by wristband only which will be available from 17 October from a collection site, which are listed on the www.enjoydarlington.co.uk website.

Anyone going along to collect a wristband needs to bring a copy of a utility bill as proof of address, along with their email and mobile numbers.

The fun starts from 5.30pm where the gates open and from 6.30pm there will be Fantasy Fireworks, a

Street food stalls, fairground rides and performers will also add to the experience, making it a night to remember.

Darlington Cares is holding a winter coat drive to help people who may not be able to afford cold weather wear.

Coats as well as good quality hats and scarves are all required and can be dropped off at collections points at Queen Street Shopping Centre and the Dolphin Centre.

There are over 2,000 children in need of a loving, permanent home through adoption in England. Adopt Coast to Coast, the Regional Adoption Agency for Durham County Council, Cumbria County Council and Together for Children (Sunderland) is calling for more people to consider adoption as a way to start or grow their families.

As well as finding homes for babies and children from across the NorthEast and North-West of England, Adopt Coast to Coast is looking for adopters for children who tend to wait longer for their forever home. This includes children over 4 years old, groups of brothers and sisters, children with learning difficulties, health complications or disabilities, and children from an ethic minority.

Adopt Coast to Coast is encouraging would-be adopters to be open to the needs of the children they could be potentially matched with and to consider the many benefits of adopting a child

with additional support needs. As adopter Louise said: “To see Toby as happy as he is on a daily basis regardless of his disabilities is just amazing. He is more than just a child with epilepsy and cerebral palsy, he’s loving, he’s funny, he loves music and he’s a home boy and loves to be at home snuggling on the sofa where he feels safe.”

Adopt Coast to Coast offers support and guidance throughout the application process as well as on an ongoing basis for both parents and children; meaning help is always available should you need it.

Adopters Debbie and Allan adopted their daughter when she was four years old: “Our daughter has now been with us for over 6 years. She is a wonderful, grown-up girl now. She is courageous, resilient, beautiful and has the biggest

and kindest heart you could ever hope for. She has been through a lot in her life, but with consistent love, structure and support, she is thriving. Our advice is to be open to older children, they are full of love, potential and hope. You just need to unlock it.”

Many people come to adoption to add to their family, like parent Jo who already had a biological son: “We had gone from a time where having more kids was not going to happen, to being in a position where it was more than possible. Now that our daughter is living with us, I still can’t quite believe it, and I’m so proud of our beautiful kids. We were right, our son is the best big brother, and they have this amazing bond. Adoption has completed our family.”

Preparing a Will is not ordinarily at the forefront of new parents’ minds however it is the perfect time for parents to plan responsibly for the future and ensure that their children are protected, both financially and welfare arrangements, should the worst happen.

GUARDIANSHIP

Appointing a guardian for your children simply involves you choosing exactly who will look after them when you pass away and writing this in your Will.

Often this may be grandparents, siblings or friends but consider would they have a similar outlook on raising children? Would the children have to move schools? Or simply who could cope? Making this choice whilst our alive can save confusion and family fall outs at the time.

FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS

Children cannot inherit under an estate until they reach 18 but this age can be raised to 21 or 25 if you felt 18 might be too young to inherit substantially.

A child’s inheritance will be managed by the people you nominate to act under the Will as trustees. Trustees will manage the inheritance and can utilise funds for the benefit of the child in certain circumstances. This may include payment of a regular allowance, assistance with the costs of raising the child or paying school fees or higher education costs.

LAS VEGAS

The undisputed entertainment capital of the world was one of the hardest hit victims of the pandemic. How has Las Vegas recovered? Bernice Saltzer found out…

At one point during lockdown, when we were all barely able to leave our homes, I decided to have an idle browse through Cameras of the World.

It’s a facility which enables you to see – in real time – what’s happening in a specific location.

I tuned in to see the cameras that were pointed at the world famous Strip, only to view barely a handful of people in view. It was heartbreaking.

As a city so reliant on tourism could Las Vegas really survive? Having recently returned, I am delighted to report that the “patient” is not only doing well and has completely recovered but has a whole new lease of life.

As self proclaimed Vegas lovers, returning after an absence of three years – and what a three years – was always going to be an interesting experience. Would things have changed? Would some

of the iconic attractions have survived?

Vegas has changed – but only for the better. New shows, new restaurants and new hotels, with massive building works already underway for the next generation of sprawling resorts to be created.

Our base for the week was The Venetian, sister hotel to the near-by Palazzo, which is a turbo charged version of its real life counterpart. Here all the rooms are split level suites, with your own sitting room as well as bedroom – not that anyone has much time to sit around!

As someone who has been going to Vegas for years, I’ve witnessed huge changes.

Once primarily all about the gambling, Vegas now has widened its appeal so it offers visitors who don’t want to spend a dime on a table or in a slot (although I defy anyone to resist!) plenty of entertainment.

At the heart of the city is its absolutely incredible shows. Over the years stars like Elton John and Celine Dion have made the city their home, but for my money no

Vegas experience is ever complete without a trip to see Cirque du Soleil.

Yes, this world famous company does tour, but the sheer scale of the Vegas productions means they simply could never travel so make time in your busy schedule to see at least one.

We got two productions under our belt this time round, an old favourite and a brand new offering.

The Bellagio continues to be a flagship show, a stunning fantastic spectacle on a scale that you’re unlikely to have ever seen before.

Talented acrobats, clowns and circus performers create a visual feast which needs to be seen to be believed and never fails to impress.

At the other end of the scale is the brand new show, Big Apple, which can now be seen at New York New York casino. A tribute to – yes you’ve guessed it – the Big Apple, it’s a more intimate show with the same high octane thrill level.

I would fly the Atlantic again to see comedian Harrison Greenbaum, who takes the show to another level.

No Vegas experience is complete however without enjoying the food.

For a place that’s in the middle of a dessert so doesn’t grown anything,

the quality (and quantity) on offer is mindblowing.

We tried out one of the Venetian’s newest restaurants, Estiatorio Milos, which takes it inspiration from Greece and where the seafood is flown in daily from the Mediterranean.

The whole experience can only be described as sublime. Even a simple Greek salad took on a new edge and the food is generous, imaginative and simply delicious.

We shared dishes family style so everyone could try everythingthere was not one morsel that wasn’t simply superb.

Everything is supposedly bigger and better in Vegas – and if you needed proof of that then head to Caesar’s Palace and ita Bacchanal Buffet. In the past the city’s famous buffets were more about quantity than quality – but here you get both.

For just under 100 dollars you can eat your own bodyweight in the

finest seafood, the best steaks and from every other cuisine under the sun from Lebanese to Chinese.

There’s salads, vegetables, breads, cheeses and desserts that would put Willy Wonka to shame, along with a range of specials. A food lovers dream.

And if you want to combine a love of food with great entertainment, then head along to the Bellagio and its new offering, The Mayfair Supper Club.

Here is a stylish setting which has a 1920 vibe you can dine on top quality food while being entertained by a skillful and talented team of dancers and singers who bring back that old Vegas style vibe.

There is such much to do, so much to see and so much to enjoy in Vegas that there’s no doubt each time you leave you’re counting the days until you return – possibly the only sure bet in a city founded on gambling!
