Judy Pfaff: Picking up the Pieces

Judy Pfaff ,s (b. 1946) prolific artistic career spans more than five decades. Highly influential and renowned for her site-specific installations, Pfaff has ceaselessly reinvented her distinctive visual lexicon, employing conventional and unconventional materials. Like an alchemist, she transforms the mundane and ordinary into something extraordinary and mesmerizing. Pfaff adores investigating materials and handcrafting all her objects as painter, sculptor, carpenter, welder, glassblower, printmaker, and designer. Guided by intuition, Pfaff makes her singular vision concrete by creating surprising combinations of objects that highlight life,s contradictory forces and inherent duality.

Her work is a topography of human emotions, the nexus of countless storylines linking the events of our time to our personal and collective experiences.

This exhibition, Picking up the Pieces, results from Pfaff’s exploration of Hurricane Ian’s devastating impact on southwestern Florida in September 2022.

Sensitive to environmental issues, like the recent and unprecedentedly frequent natural disasters, Pfaff has responded by producing sculptural works.

Still, witnessing for herself the devastation at Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel Island in the wake of the storm left an indelible mark. In the eponymously titled massive site-specific installation, Picking up the Pieces, Pfaff simulates the storm’s bewildering chaos and tumult, its destructive power, and its aftermath.

The exhibition is divided into two parts. Pulsating with exuberant colors and LED and neon lights interwoven into a bricolage of found objects and paintings, the first section is Pfaff’s hymn to nature, celebrating the natural beauty and abundance of Florida in particular. Joyful, resplendent references to flowers, vegetation, and light abound in this section’s mixed-media wall and table pieces.

The second part of the exhibition is the site-specific installation, Picking up the Pieces. This emotionally charged, powerful environment, with an array of objects hoisted in mid-air, invites viewers on a visceral journey, a vicarious witnessing of the destruction of human and natural habitats.

The exhibition’s title,“ Picking up the Pieces,” refers to the act of putting life back together, evoking human resilience after a disaster or tragic event.

It also alludes to the septuagenarian artist’s own process. Delving into her memories and her artistic repertoire, Pfaff has recycled three-dimensional

components of works from decades ago and incorporated them into the new work.

Often regarded as a pioneer of installation art, Pfaff has held more than 100 solo exhibitions in the United States and abroad and received numerous prestigious awards, including the International Sculpture Center’s Lifetime Achievement Award (2014) and a MacArthur Fellowship (2004). She represented the United States in the 1998 São Paulo Biennial. Pfaff’s work is housed in the permanent collections of such prestigious public institutions as Tate Gallery, MoMA, the Whitney Museum of Art, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art to name a few.

EMBODIED WISDOM OF A PAINTER John & Charlotte Suhler Gallery

“My mind is wired as a painter,” said Pfaff, who studied painting with Al Held at Yale. Applying that same mind to her genre-defying artmaking, she has long captivated audiences with her innovative employment and amalgamation of materials and techniques. The lush and exuberant mixed-media works you see in the John & Charlotte Suhler Gallery reveal her keen sensitivity to the spectrum of colors and their psychological effects and physical properties, including liquidity, viscosity, and luminosity.

Here, conjuring up paradisiacal abundance, bacchanalian revelry, and leisurely pleasure, Pfaff presents new and recent creations (2021-23).

Some of these are whimsically bedecked with geometrical and figurative components recycled from her three-dimensional works dating back

to the 1980s and ’90s. Her inspiration comes from several sources: her memories of Florida, her affinity for gardens and nature, and of course, her creative obsession with materials—be they natural, industrial, artistic, kitsch, readymade, decrepit, or new—that spark her imagination and guide her creative process. Pfaff’s muses are materials. “Materials educate me,” she says.

No stranger to Sarasota, Pfaff has fond memories of Florida. In 1981, at a critical juncture in her early career, she held her first museum exhibition at The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. In 2009 and 2010, she returned here as an invited artist to ARTmuse, an educational program created

by Sarasota Art Museum’s founders to lay the groundwork for the region’s first contemporary art museum that was to come.

Around you, you will find Pfaff’s impressions of Florida’s sun-soaked, life-affirming landscape, fecund nature, and leisurely rhythm of life, as well as her own love of gardening and flowers distilled in brightly colored and colorfully lit wall pieces and opulent still-life-like tabletop assemblages. Note how a plethora of readymade faux flowers, fruits, and vegetables, as well as painted paper lanterns and three-dimensional elements that resemble flora and foliage burst out into the space, emerging from acrylic-and-poured-resin paintings or woven plastic rugs bearing floral motifs. Acrylic paints mixed with resin, reminiscent of Helen Frankenthaler’s

soak-stain paintings, appear to germinate, grow, and bloom like bougainvillea or algae. A flowerpetal-shaped chandelier with colorful lightbulbs conveys the prevailing sense of optimism and opulence. With her astonishing visual intellect and materially embodied wisdom of a painter, Pfaff creates hypnotic art that emulates, but doesn’t literally imitate, nature’s plenitude and its kaleidoscopic variety. Boldly fusing conventional and unconventional materials and transforming the mundane and banal into the magical and fantastic, she creates works that evoke the force and vitality of uncontrollable nature. Her work releases the energy found in the dynamic tension between the organic and the synthetic—between order and chaos.

Despite the pervasive presence of life-affirming nature, however, notes of decay and disintegration, followed by regeneration, also hang in the air amid these poignantly beautiful and ebullient works.

Observe the plastic rugs (Pfaff’s favorite readymade, utilitarian artifacts, originally bought in New York City’s Chinatown, used in her house and studio for many years, and now revived for her assemblages), for instance, covered with pigmented expandable foam, which seemingly spreads like mold and mushrooms growing out of organic decay. In the middle of the gallery, on the other hand, you will see similar rugs draping over the chair and the tables that carry modern-day symbols of excess and pleasure, such as plastic party cups.

The mat covering the steel chair is partly melted by flame, accentuating the interwoven plastic threads and iridescent colors. The heat has also transformed this utilitarian object into a languid form, as if it were slowly expiring under the relentless elements. You will find a prominent wall piece, also made from a recycled plastic rug, hanging near the entrance to the adjacent Tom & Sherry Koski and Lois & David Stulberg Galleries. Its opacity and aesthetics rhyme with the two broken umbrella frames. The piece, with its pulsating light injected into the wrinkled geography of the folded rug, conjures up threatening weather looming large. Pfaff ’s ingenuity in handcrafting objects and creating assemblages, and her ability to suggest dramatic narrative possibilities through her material are fully manifested in this mesmerizing collection of individual works.

Picking up the Pieces is Pfaff’s visceral response to the destruction and despair that she witnessed when she visited Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel Island in early 2023 for a firsthand look in the wake of Hurricane Ian. Since the summer of 2022, Pfaff had been working out her concepts for this monumental exhibition. In September, from her upstate New York studio in Tivoli, she watched the news coverage as Hurricane Ian made landfall as a

near-Category Five storm on South Florida’s Gulf Coast. When Pfaff visited the area following the storm, the devastation she witnessed triggered memories of her childhood in post-World War II London. It also reminded her of experiences in New York City’s Tribeca after 9/11, when everything was blanketed with white dust from the collapse of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. “We all felt,” Pfaff says, “that we would never recover from it.” Her vision for this powerful installation, which is simultaneously specific and capacious enough to encompass many tragic and destructive events, has never veered away from the emotions generated by her firsthand experience in Florida’s beach towns. It was there that she solidified her artistic vision, and back in her studio, she newly fabricated a significant portion of the objects that make up this massive and highly affecting environment.

Picking up the Pieces simulates the bewildering chaos and tumult of the storm and its aftermath.

However, rather than rendering what she witnessed realistically, her vision captures the visceral impressions, charging them with textured emotional tones and mixing the familiar and representational with the abstract and nonfigurative. Evoking the heavy gusts of wind, tornadoes, and displaced and broken objects, both natural and manmade, are a wide array of components, hoisted with pulleys in mid-air and scattered across the gallery space, littering the floor and walls.

Note how the steel and metal tree trunks conjure up images of fallen and split trees, while the long and slender LED tube lights suspended diagonally evoke rumbling thunder and lightning that cut through the sky. The lights add intensity and menacing drama, leading your gaze outwards and inwards, forward and backward, anchoring the three-dimensional spatial composition.

Open and broken umbrellas covered in resin mimic rain-soaked, windblown objects, which not only convey life’s fragility metaphorically but also evoke inexplicable sadness. Clumped, welded rusty chairs and furniture-like geometric steel structures, along with concrete-covered foam in the shape of broken architectural elements and other assemblages of found and transformed objects, suggest devastated homes and human suffering.

You will also find nautical references, ranging from a real boat to translucent molded fiberglass boats to concrete moorings and glass orbs in the shape of buoys, mixed with a wide range of phantasmagoric sculptural assemblages. Sculptures of various sizes made with diverse found and readymade objects, including corrugated honeycomb cardboard, pigmented expandable foam, and melted plastic, evoke an eerie, unsettling beachscape littered with a jumble of detritus from both sea and land.

Pfaff’s largest installation since 2017, Picking up the Pieces displays the ingenuity of her genre-defying artmaking through imaginative manipulation and unbridled experimentation with a host of materials.

Here, she balances artistic and experiential contradictions and dualities. Despite the turbulent, devastating environment, Pfaff insinuates seeds of continuing life and beauty, and finds, in the aftermath of disaster, possibilities of regeneration that are partly hidden and partly visible within the masses of manmade and natural detritus.

Life, beauty, hope, and light are amply denoted by a range of bright and sparkling lights, interwoven and interspersed throughout the gallery. Picking up the Pieces is as cyclical as nature itself. Death and life, beginning and ending—they all coexist and are within each other. As you turn around and return to the adjacent gallery, you will see the power of nature that regenerates and resumes the cycle of life.

Fusionando audazmente materiales convencionales y no convencionales y transformando lo mundano y lo banal en lo mágico y fantástico, crea obras que evocan la fuerza y vitalidad de la naturaleza incontrolable. “ Recogiendo los pedazos” es la respuesta visceral de Pfaff a la destrucción y desesperación que presenció cuando visitó las playas de Fort Myers y la isla Sanibel a principios de 2023 para ver de primera mano las secuelas del huracán Ian. Desde el verano de 2022, Pfaff estaba desarrollando sus conceptos para esta monumental exposición.

En septiembre, desde su estudio en Tivoli, Nueva

York, vio la cobertura de noticias mientras el huracán Ian tocaba tierra como una tormenta casi de categoría cinco en la Costa del Golfo del sur de Florida. Cuando Pfaff visitó el área después de la tormenta, la devastación que presenció desencadenó recuerdos de su infancia en Londres después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Observe cómo los troncos de los árboles de acero y metal evocan imágenes de árboles caídos y partidos, mientras que los largos y delgados tubos de luces LED suspendidos en diagonal evocan el retumbar de truenos y relámpagos que atraviesan el cielo. Las luces añaden intensidad y un dramatismo amenazante, dirigiendo su mirada hacia afuera y hacia adentro, adelante y atrás, anclando la composición espacial tridimensional. Paraguas abiertos y rotos cubiertos de resina imitan objetos empapados de lluvia y arrastrados por el viento, que no sólo transmiten metafóricamente la fragilidad de la vida sino que también evocan una tristeza inexplicable. Sillas oxidadas, agrupadas y soldadas, estructuras geométricas de acero que parecen muebles, espuma cubierta de concreto en forma de elementos arquitectónicos rotos y otros ensamblajes de objetos encontrados y transformados, sugieren hogares devastados y sufrimiento humano.

También encontrará referencias náuticas, que van desde un bote real hasta barcos translúcidos de fibra de vidrio moldeada, amarres de concreto y esferas de vidrio en forma de boyas, mezclados con una amplia gama de fantasmagóricos ensamblajes

escultóricos. Esculturas de varios tamaños hechas con diversos objetos encontrados y prefabricados, incluyendo cartón corrugado tipo panal, espuma expandible pigmentada y plástico derretido, evocan un paisaje playero inquietante y siniestro, lleno de una mezcla de desechos tanto del mar como de la tierra.

La instalación más grande de Pfaff desde 2017, “ Recogiendo los pedazos”, muestra el ingenio de su creación artística que desafía géneros a través de una imaginativa manipulación y experimentación ilimitada con una multitud de materiales. Aquí, equilibra las contradicciones y dualidades artísticas y vivenciales.
