Bright colors march up and down as bold orange sashing strips add a striking intensity. This quilt design is as easy as sewing strips into strip sets before turning them into Four-Patches. Begin with some pre-cut strips for a quick start, then add a background and a focal print to make the quilt your own.

Bev accentuated the motion of the colored patches by quilting diagonal straight lines. You can also choose an allover pattern for a soft fi nish. Such a fun quilt that will lift your mood whenever you snuggle under it! For a video on putting this quilt together, go to www.quiltingdaily.com/product/chez-luna-quilt-pattern-download.

Plan

Grab some 2½" strips and get ready to make this cheerful quilt. Note how the colored squares line up perfectly across the quilt top. Use an accurate ¼" seam allowance throughout to ensure all elements of the quilt fi t together well.

Shop

Fabric yardage assumes 40" usable width of fabric (WOF) unless otherwise noted. • Gray solid 3¼ yds. for blocks • Assorted prints 16 strips 2½" x WOF for bands • Orange print #1 1½ yds. for sashes • Orange print #2 ¾ yd. for binding • Backing 5¼ yds. • Batting 76" x 92"

Cut

Patches are lettered in order of use. Measurements include ¼" seam allowances. Sashing strips will be pieced and cut to exact length needed. You may want to make them longer to allow for piecing variations. • Gray solid 124 squares 4½" (A) 16 strips 2½" x WOF for bands • Orange print #1 8 strips 4½" x WOF for sashes • Orange Print #2 8 strips 2½" x WOF for binding

NOTE: Fabrics in the quilt shown are from the Luna Sol collection by Felice Regina and Palette by Marcia Derse, both for Windham Fabrics.

Color Option

Want a more toned down look? Why not use assorted greens in your Four-Patches to achieve a monochromatic look. Add navy sashes for cozy look.

Making Bands

Strips are frequently sewn together to create a band, which you can cut into smaller segments.

1. To make a band, pair two strips with right sides facing and raw edges aligned. Stitch with ¼" seam. Press flat to set stitches.

4. Measure height of band to ensure it matches the required measurements. Aligning horizontal lines on ruler with long edge and seam lines of strip set, trim uneven end of strip set. 2. Fold top strip back and gently press seam open to one side. Band should be straight, without any distortion along outside edges.

5. Keeping horizontal lines on ruler aligned with band, cut required width segments. 3. Add third strip to complete band and press as described in previous steps.

Products used: Havel’s Self-Healing Cutting Mat, Havel’s 45mm Rotary Cutter, and Havel’s 6" × 24" Fabric Ruler. Fabric from Garden Glory collection by Maja Ronnbeck and Abstract Collage collection by Ampersand, both for Paintbrush Studio Fabrics. 6. If making bands with more than three strips, join strips in pairs and then sew pairs together.

TIP If combining units from multiple bands, such as for a Nine-Patch block, press seams in bands in alternating directions to "nest" seams.
