ll by yourself: that’s a state we want you to learn to be comfortable in this month. Whether that means embracing the occasional bout of loneliness (Don’t Worry, Be Unhappy, p. 73), finally mustering the courage to pack your bags and leave your family home (Why I Moved Out at 21, p. 69) or a city that no longer makes you as happy as you deserve to be (Hanoi on My Mind, p. 100), or even getting over your deeply ingrained shame and getting to know your body and what gives you pleasure (Mastur Class, p. 75), we hope you realize that on your own is not such a bad place to be. In this issue, we also encourage you to be on your own—on your own terms. There’s no need to feel pressured to subscribe to a specific standard of independence and success, so whatever steps you’re taking to make you feel like the strong, powerful woman you are is already enough reason to give yourself some cred. Peep 20 Smaller Things You can be Proud of on p. 70 and the super inspiring Coming of Age on p. 60 to remind you that in the end, your own unique definition of independence should always come first.

This cropped racerback from GUESS’s latest collection is giving my inner ‘90s kid life.

I’m always a sucker for a good, dark floral printed piece, like this skirt from Sfera.

STILL IN THE GAME International star and Johnnie Walker ambassador Freida Pinto sits down with Cosmo. As one of the few Indian actresses to successfully make it in Hollywood, Freida understands the pressure to break away from stereotypical Indian roles. “As an actor, the one thing I’ve had to make peace with is that the roles I actually want to play won’t come to me that easily. So I have to put in the work.” You can catch Freida on the big screen in the upcoming Jungle Book adaptation next year.

Then I take a concept, go on a rampage, and turn it into a script.”

On her off days, Freida enjoys a finger of scotch. Her favorite memory? When a complete stranger came up to her and taught her how to drink it when she was sent to buy a bottle for her dad. “I thanked the man, took the bottle home, and had a drink with my dad. I’ve loved scotch ever since!”

I’m not as well-versed in as my guest is. I recently did a shoot with Bill Gates to discuss his foundation’s work to literally change the quality of life for humans in developing countries. Obviously, not a topic I’m an expert in by any means, but a Bawse will always try to the best of their abilities, and that’s what this Bawse did!”

THE EYRE AFFAIR

by Jasper Fforde Imagine a world where people use airships instead of airplanes, extinct species such as dodos can be cloned as pets, time travel is policed, and literature is taken so seriously, it has an entire Special Ops division dedicated to it. When characters like Jane Eyre are suddenly kidnapped from classic novels, it’s up to literary detective Thursday Next to find the perpetrator and bring him to justice.

by F.H. Batacan If you’re into CSI or Sherlock, then this is a must-read. In what is dubbed the “first Filipino crime novel,” Jesuit priests Father Jerome Lucero and forensic anthropologist Gus Saenz investigate a series of murders involving pre-teen boys.

WONDER WOMEN

by Sam Maggs From rocket scientist Mary Sherman Morgan to aviation superstar Bessie Coleman, this book is your chance to get to know the hidden figures that paved the way for women everywhere to change history as we know it.

COSMO BAE LEE MIN HO Tell us about your new album, Always.

I keep making albums because I feel like there’s always something new to express. Not necessarily big or ambitious topics, but as I grow, I want to continue to share my life with my fans, who have been so loyal over the years. Releasing new music is a great way to communicate with them. That’s why this album is called Always—we’re always, always in this together.

Your fans are also very supportive of your fundraising platform, Promiz, the proceeds of which go toward various groups such as the UNICEF and Food Bank. Founded in 2014, it won the Korea Good Brand Awards last year— congratulations!

I’m thankful that my fans have been there from the very beginning of Promiz. It was born out of a desire to help those who are socially marginalized or are in a difficult situation. The more you encounter societal issues, the more you want to help in any way that you can. More than giving donations in cash or in kind at one-off events, we want Promiz to be a sustainable way of sharing our resources with those in need.

“I’d like to be remembered simply as a human being who always gave his best and tried to make a difference in the lives of other people.” 14

Since my character, Heo Joon Jae, changes the way he acts depending on whom he’s with, it’s safe to say that he is a collection of characters. As an actor, I found it to be an interesting and fulfilling role. There’s a playfulness but also a seriousness to his character, and it was fun to juggle both.

Sacrifice is a running theme in the love story that spans generations. If you were in a situation where you had to make a sacrifice for someone you love, what would you do? The Legend of the Blue Sea is fictional, but it’s rooted in reality in the way that love, in all its forms, requires communication, compromise, and yes, sacrifice in some ways. You’ll do anything to protect your loved ones. Given the situation, I think my character made the best choice.

Describe your ideal love.

For me, the ideal kind of love provides a sense of security and creates a positive environment. A relationship is a give-and-take exchange that creates a safe space for two people to make mistakes and learn from them, and grow together and as individuals.

As an actor, how do you immerse yourself in a story, and how do you separate the real from the reel?

Well, you just have to take a deep breath then jump right in. Living the character’s life helps you get the hang of it, but there’s always going to be an adjustment period. I try to find a common ground with the character by focusing on his emotions. I’m constantly trying to improve as an actor.

You’re an actor, singer, global ambassador, and philanthropist. What would you like to be remembered as?

I’d like to be remembered simply as a human being who always gave his best and tried to make a difference in the lives of other people. I’m happy with where I am today, and I hope to share that feeling with everyone.

If you had the ability to change one thing in the world, what would it be?

To have everyone speak the same language. That would be amazing.

Your oppa from Boys Over Flowers and The Legend of the Blue Sea is back with a new album.

Let’s talk about your latest hit show, The Legend of the Blue Sea, where you starred opposite Jun Ji Hyun from My Sassy Girl and My Love from the Star. What was it like to play a con artist who falls for a mermaid?

CONFESSIONS Because adulting is harder than it looks on TV

“My 7-year-old cousin was sitting on my lap as I told him a bedtime story. We were in the bottom bunk of a double-deck bed, so there wasn’t much headroom. I accidentally sat up too quickly, and my cousin’s head hit one of the metal bars. He got a bump on his head the size of a ping-pong ball and hasn’t spoken to me since. I’m the worst babysitter ever.”

“As the kuya of the group, I was assigned to drive home three of my friends and two of my siblings. Everybody was upset for reasons I can’t recall, and in an effort to keep them all quiet while I was backing out of a parking space, I ended up driving right into a concrete post. It took three months’ salary to get that dent fixed.

“My dad had to be brought to the hospital for a minor injury. Since I was the only one with him, I was tasked to fill out forms while he was being treated. It dawned on me that I didn’t know my own father’s birth year. I had to ask him when he got out... Love you, Daddy!”

“I arrived at my apartment one night to find a huge blood stain on the front door. In my shock, I stormed downstairs and angrily asked my landlord what was going on. It turns out there had been a false fire alarm earlier, and our heroic landlord had broken the emergency glass before banging on everybody’s doors to signal for evacuation. I was mortified for being so angry.” —MOIRA, 19

GROWNUP-O-METER

“I had taken a laxative right before a long bus ride to Manila from my province. After five hours, my stomach began to rumble. I ran for the mall bathroom, but I was too late—I sh*t myself right then and there. I had to call my girlfriend, who lived two hours away, to bring me a new pair of jeans, underwear, and baby wipes because I was too ashamed to tell my mom.”

DIDN’T KNOW BE T TER KICKING AND SCRE AMING I NEED A KIDDIE ME AL MORE CHILDISH THAN GAMBINO SIT IN THE QUIE T CORNER HELP, MOMMY

“I was in the LTO with my mom, who had (tsk!) paid one of the employees to fast-track my driver’s license card. When it was ready for pickup at the counter, we had to be discreet about it—the employee wrapped the license around some paper and handed it over. Clumsy me dropped the piece of paper, and my card slipped out for everybody to see...and this was after LTO had announced that no license cards would be released for the next six months.” —VIEN, 21

What happens when an out-of-shape millennial joins an indoor cycling class?

That you, , of not-sosound mind and body, do hereby declare your one-time participation in a spin cla—oh, it’s not a spin class? This is different? And it all makes sense when you step into the cycling studio: the room is pitch black, except for a single candle next to the instructor’s bike. Everybody’s in neon garb, stretching and chattering. Up front, the instructor’s shouting “Hello, ladies!” and “Welcome!” in a tone just a few notches below slightly insufferable. But that’s her job, to pump you up. If anything, you’re wondering if your legs can trudge through without cramping. You mount your bike and take a swig of water, praying to all the gods you can think of.

2. THEE FIRRST 30 MIINUTES are a challenge: While most of the class is keeping up effortlessly, you’re sweating buckets, doing everything to keep yourself from collapsing to the ground. Each instructor’s got their own unique playlist, and yours likes classic rock. Arctic Monkeys at the gym? Heck yeah. After 10 minutes of genuine, honest effort, you take two minutes to catch your breath and take in your surroundings. The girls on either side of you are pushing

18

themselves to the limit, and the sight of that inspires you to keep going.

3. THEE LASTT 30 MINNUTES, and let’s not mince words here, are the closest to a living hell as you can get. The resistance on your bike is set to max, and your thighs are more jelly than muscle mass at this point. Then, juuuust when you begin to get the hang of things, you’re asked to pick up some weights and work your arms while cycling. You let out a faint whimper. You’re too weak to even protest. You look up at your instructor in this dark, dark room and it’s like she’s been replaced by the Devil himself. Now you know why they call it SoulCycle. This is a ritual that’s meant to suck the soul right out of your body.

4. AFTTER THHE WORKOUT, you dismount your bike too quickly and nearly lose your balance. For the next few seconds, your legs will be completely useless. But the best part of the session—the post-workout massage—makes every second of that class worth it. Relieved, everybody steps out for some salad and coconut water. “You were really going at it back there,” says one of your classmates. “Maybe we can go to the next class together!” Maybe you will, or maybe you won’t. But hey, that’s one new workout off your bucket list.

Something Just Like This Anne Curtis, after all this time, is still the country’s sweetheart. And we have a feeling that’s never going to change.

“I want to be able to make mistakes and learn from them.”

It is 2003, and an 18-year-old Anne Curtis has just landed her very first Cosmo cover. In it she wears her hair long and stick-straight, her eyebrows arched and thin, her lips a matte nude. A powder blue halter dress clings to the young actress’s body, showing off ample cleavage and a tiny waist. The cover blurb proudly proclaims, “Anne Curtis grows up.” And grow up was exactly what she did from that point on, with as much determination and enthusiasm as a teenager could muster, having moved out of her parents’ house and into a condo she wasn’t even sure she could afford to rent on her own. “That’s when everything got real for me,” she reminisces. “I struggled with small things like doing the groceries, comparing prices of toilet paper, paying my utility bills, not forgetting deadlines. I really did all of that by myself. But it’s okay because I wanted to do it. I wanted to prove that I could. I wanted to do my own thing without having to wait for anyone’s approval.” Now, 14 years and 9 Cosmo covers later, Anne is wiser and more sure of herself, validated by the constant outpouring of love from her fans and grounded by the two eventful decades she’s spent working in the industry. “I’m still young at heart,” she assures us, as if we needed any convincing—the ever-present playful gleam in her eyes, no matter how exhausted she is from her graveyard shoot shifts for the upcoming action movie Buy Bust, is more than enough proof. “I don’t

let my age define me or take over my spirit, which has always been childlike and free.”

What’s your definition of independence? Being strong-willed, having faith, and standing up for what you believe in. Independence to me is having the freedom to pursue your passions.

When do you feel the most free? When I’m not in the limelight. I feel the most like myself when I’m not under scrutiny or judgment, and when I’m with the people I trust and love.

Is it hard to find time to feel like yourself, given that you’re such a big star? I never let my celebrity rule over me. And sometimes that’s gotten me into trouble, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I want that kind of freedom. I want to be able to make mistakes and learn from them.

Do you believe independence and romantic happiness can coexist? I feel they should. You should never be dependent on anyone—that’s how relationships fail. Because what

happens when you’re too dependent on someone and they leave you? You become a wreck. But if you’re two independent people who have your own lives, it makes you more compatible because you both have something to bring to the table. You have something to share when you come home. And you just get better together.

Any advice on having both independence and a happy relationship? I think it really starts with having faith in yourself. If you’re an independent woman, you won’t let your insecurities get the best of you, which is the number one source of destruction in a relationship.

When it comes to decision making, how independent are you?

“[A happy relationship] starts with having faith in yourself.”

I usually have to ask people what they think. It takes me forever to decide because I tend to second-guess myself. Then I’ll make a last-minute decision and stick to it.

I’m more of a gut feel person than a rational one. That’s why it’s hard—it’s always a guessing game. I’ve always been intuitive. It got me to where I am now, which means both good and bad decisions have worked in my favor. Even mistakes can eventually help you make smart decisions, because then you’ll know better.

What’s your biggest adulting milestone to date? Buying my own house was a major turning point. I was 22 and I wanted it so badly. I told myself I was going to work hard to make it happen. I just worked and worked. I learned to take my career seriously, because there was so much at stake. When I finally did it, it felt so good. Achievement unlocked!

24

COSMOPOLITAN đ JUNE 2017

Have you ever traveled on your own? Yes, twice: in Thailand and Spain. It was so soothing because I had so much me time. Imagine going a week without talking to anyone, except to check into a hotel. It was so liberating. It’s your time just for yourself, and you take away so much from that experience. I discovered that I can enjoy my own company. You’ll doubt at first if you’re going to survive, but you get there and realize how much you can trust yourself. Heading out with your map and travel book teaches you to be responsible and mindful of your surroundings. It was such a

challenging, exciting experience. I’d do it again, but of course my constant travel partner now is Erwan (Heussaff).

Congratulations on your engagement! How do you think your career will change once you’re married? Thank you! I don’t really know, but I’m so against the mentality that just because you’re married, all you’re supposed to do are mom roles. I don’t think that’s true.

Do you feel that women and men should approach independence differently? Yes, but only because we’re working WWW.COSMO.PH

toward equality. In some countries, people still feel like women shouldn’t be at par with men. But if you’re a strong, driven, independent woman, you don’t have to rely on anyone but yourself. You can have your own career and provide for your family. Times have changed for women. The marrying age has been pushed back, and women don’t need men to take care of them or to define who they are, which is a great thing.

Do you identify as a feminist? I believe in the rights of women and that we should be at par with men. I think women’s voices are being heard increasingly, no matter the industry. People say it’s a trend, but it’s not. Women can speak up now. I believe the gender equality landscape has changed in showbiz, too. Before, when you’re part of a love team, it’s the leading man who stays on. But that’s not the case now. Even if the love team doesn’t last, you can both have separate careers and a bright future.

independent early on. I was able to enjoy my independence more as I got older because I’d gotten the hard stuff out of the way. The thing is, I experienced all those struggles when I was at an age that I was so eager and I wanted to prove that I can survive and be a responsible adult. So when I was 24, I was like, I got this! I was able to relax. It’s good to start being independent at a young age because that’s the point where mistakes are still okay. I think you reach a certain age where, when you make a mistake, people will say, Uy, ang tanda mo na, ha! But when you’re younger, it’s more forgivable and people are more open to guiding you. You’re also more driven to make up for your mistakes.

This is your 9th Cosmo cover! What would you tell the Anne who appeared on her first You’ve been working for 20 years. Cosmo cover? What’s your most memorable fan “Don’t be encounter so far? such a risk My fans have grown up with me through the years. The most memorable experience was in Cebu in 2014. I was there for a concert, and my dad met Bernadette, one of my fans, at the hotel lobby. She’d traveled all the way from another province, broken shoes and all, but she didn’t have a ticket—all she had was a scrapbook she’d made for me. She just wanted to see me; it was so heartwarming and touching. We got her a ticket, and I surprised her with a new pair of shoes and sang for her at the concert. Now she’s working in the Middle East and we follow each other on Twitter. It’s incredible how you can inspire someone and make them have faith in themselves. It’s amazing to be able to instill that in people, that they can follow their dreams and make anything happen.

You became independent at such an early age. Do you regret that? No. I’m glad I learned to be

taker, you little daredevil!” Haha! I’d tell myself to be a little more careful. I guess that’s another thing that comes with age. You can’t keep on going through life as if there were no consequences and no other people to think about.

How much has changed since then? Not a lot, really. How I was back then is still how I am now—except with lessons learned and a lot more experience in life. A lot of transitioning from different aspects, a lot of turning points. Being in this industry keeps me youthful and fuels my zest for life. At the end of the day, no matter what, I’m still a pursuer of dreams.

STAGE 1: THE SHOWER It is a truth universally acknowledged that my skin will never look better than it does first thing in the morning (thanks, retinA!). It’s all downhill after that because I like bathing in water that comes straight from the 7th circle of Hell. Whether I condition or use lotion is a matter of how much I care; on weekdays, I don’t. Sorry, lola, but my legs will be parched by 10AM, because the one body moisturizer that doesn’t leave me feeling like cochinillo is all the way in my bedroom and uuugghhhsofarhassle.

STAGE 2: THE PRIME Hair now wrapped up in the world’s most unflattering turban and in a robe I got for being a bridesmaid, I slather on oil-, fragrance-, and fun-free moisturizer. Down to the neck, because mom says it keeps the wrinkles away. This is followed immediately by sunblock, because of the

aforementioned retin-A and my fear of skin aging and cancer. Primer is only deployed when I know I’ll be out all day. I know, heresy.

STAGE 3: THE BASE Foundation follows, applied all over with the best (read: cleanest) tool I have. I like my base liquid, oil-free, and with none of that “only where you need it” nonsense, because I need it everywhere. Note to self: I really should wash my brushes tonight. Ugh.

STAGE 4: THE EYES There are days when I have the patience to do a lid-crease-highlight deal, and there are days when smudging on eyeliner and loading on a bajillion coats of waterproof mascara is enough. Let’s pretend it’s the former.

STAGE 5: THE BASE (AGAIN) I contour every single day, because I have dumpling-

face. The contour product of choice depends on which makeup bag I’m bringing, which depends on which bag I’m bringing. IT MAKES SENSE, OK. Blush is currently an LE whose eventual demise already makes me weep.

STAGE 6: THE HIGHLIGHT FOR THE GODS I am a highlight junkie. I am unashamed. I’ll use anything that makes my face strategically shiny. Current happiness hack: An eyeshadow called Valley Girl over my cheekbones. The name is everything.

STAGE 7: YOU’RE LATE I check the time and I’m behind schedule. I grab three random lipsticks, throw them in my bag, and hope for the best. Application happens in the car, and it promptly smudges on my coffee cup. Great. But isn’t that the great thing about makeup? That you can just…wipe it off? Also, I forgot to do my brows. Um.

Kiss and t Makeou

Forget about lip liner and let your lipstick run free. Swipe on a creamy lippie as a base, then top it off with a clear gloss, letting it bleed slightly past your lip line. Just make sure to warn bae if you feel like kissing him today.

Leftover Glitter

Glitter can be a pain to completely remove—don’t bother. Cleanse as usual, then leave your lids shadowfree to show off what’s left of your lit night out. You can also start from scratch by patting on some loose glitter on your lids, then wiping off the excess with a wet cotton pad.

The Morning After Smudged liner = couldn’t-care-less sexy. Using your pinky finger, smudge on some potted gel eyeliner just outside your upper and lower waterlines for a disheveled, wokeup-like-this look. No need to sleep with your makeup on.

About Last Night

The new “wet look” is messy and all over your face versus clean and slicked back—totally doable by misting a few loose strands of hair with water. Keep your skin looking dewy and glowy with a balmy highlighter, never mind that you passed out before double-cleansing and moisturizing.

EMPOWERED, ENLIGHTENED, AND BETTER THAN EVER

LIFE UNLOCKED

What, exactly, does it mean to be independent? Is it moving out of your parents’ house? Making a massive, I’m-such-a-grownup purchase? Traveling on your own? Whatever it is, we believe true freedom can only be defined by one person: you.

65

Independent women aren’t just honeys making money (throw your hands up at me!)—although that’s certainly part of it. Here, real Pinays give us the lowdown on the different ways they lead independent lives.

66

COSMOPOLITAN đ JUNE 2017

estiny’s Child’s 2000 hit paints a picture of independent women as shoe-buying, rockrocking chicas who get by on hard work to earn their riches. But more than killing it in your career and raking in the bucks, independence is a heady cocktail that requires

traits such as discipline, resourcefulness, focus, determination, courage, and the faith that things will work out coming together to pack a strong yet sweet punch. If you have all these ingredients inside you, then sit back and savor it, independent Pinay. You have arrived.

COMING OF AGE D

Jamie, 31, a senior brand manager, applies to her profession by “working hard and smart, and building a reputation for being reliable.” Her rise has not been without the occasional stumble, but she has always picked herself up. “During my early years at work, I was misunderstood by my older, more tenured colleagues because of how I work,” Jamie shares. “I personally talked to them one by one to understand where they’re coming from and tell my side of the story. Talking about it with no BS has always worked for me.” An independent woman through and through, Jamie has learned this about herself throughout her career trajectory: “I always try to move and improve.”

MAKING YOUR OWN DREAMS HAPPEN Independence can mean taking an idea and running with it, which is what Yana, 25, a social entrepreneur, did. Armed with a degree in fashion, Yana partnered with an NGO which supports victims of human trafficking and prostitution and launched a brand of upcycled jewelry that creates livelihood for the NGO’s community of disadvantaged women. “True independence to me is owning who you are and using it to empower other women,” Yana says. “It’s believing in the power of your own story to inspire others to do the same.” It hasn’t been a walk in the park for Yana, who admits that “it’s difficult

68

COSMOPOLITAN đ JUNE 2017

“You just have to focus, work hard, and hustle.” to take the career path ‘less traveled.’” “As a woman, there will always be people who would try to bring me down and doubt the advocacy,” she admits. But despite the setbacks, Yana is loving what she’s achieved. “I get to be my own #GirlBoss, and at the same time I get to empower women to be proud of who they are and the lives they lead!”

CHOOSING THE PATH YOU WANT— AND STANDING BY THAT CHOICE If you can make difficult life decisions and stand by them, then you’re one tough, independent cookie. Moriel, 29, was doing

just peachy as a nurse— until she fell in love with makeup. “I realized that I can only live this life once and life’s too short not to do the things that make me feel fully alive,” Moriel recalls. Now, working with the industry’s best creative talents is just a day in the life for Moriel. But this would’ve remained a fantasy had she succumbed to self-doubt, dwindling finances, and the people who tried to talk her out of her career change. “I surpassed these setbacks by accepting that you cannot please everybody and that there are some people who won’t be there for you through the hard times,” Moriel says. “You just have to focus, work hard, and hustle.”

DOING THE THINGS THAT SCARE YOU Trying your luck in an entirely new place is scary as hell—that’s why anyone who’s brave enough to do it is independence on legs. Seneca, 31, a missionary who left for the UK at 23,

moved to Singapore at 25, and settled in South Korea at 28, thinks so. “Independence means stepping out in faith to do great things and move out of your comfort zone,” she says. “It’s overcoming fears and doubts to pursue things that are beyond you.” “It was scary at first,” Seneca recalls of her move to the UK, where she didn’t know anyone and took on housekeeping and waitressing jobs to earn extra while studying. But eight years since, she now prides herself in being “a wanderer, a risk-taker, and a truly independent woman.” “A simple step—applying for a UK visa—was all it took to lead me to where I am now, raising a family in South Korea,” Seneca declares. “And it is not yet over. The world is going to be my daughter’s playground. We will go places, see the world, meet people of different colors, and experience beautiful things that only overcoming my fears can accomplish.”

WHY I MOVED OUT AT 21 Or what to do when leaving the nest becomes a must.

(TE X T) CHANDR A PEPINO. (PHOTO) GE T T Y IMAGES.

I AM THE ELDEST DAUGHTER OF AN OVERSEAS FILIPINO WORKER (OFW) and a chronic gambler. It’s difficult to keep track of the things we’ve lost in the last 10 years—14 cars, four houses, several millions in cash, and the trust of many dear friends and business partners—thanks to my mother’s crippling addiction. I’ve been trying to keep my head above water since I was 12, acting as both mother and father to my two siblings while my dad was working abroad and my mom was an absolute mess. I faced the secondhand wrath of loan sharks as early as 13 and went to visit Mom for three separate jail sentences before I even turned 20. Friends I’ve known for years are astonished to find out this is happening, mostly because I’m good at keeping it under wraps. My life at home is

separate from the life I live outside it. As minors with no extended family in Manila, my siblings and I had no choice but to suffer at the hands of our mother. That’s why I decided to take charge of my future as soon as I could: just two days after I graduated from college last year, I clocked in at my first job. My dad, finally realizing my mom no longer deserved a second (or 20th) chance, began to entrust the family finances to me. After over

a year of relentless saving, and after making sure my siblings are relocated to our loving relatives in Cebu, I can finally afford to live on my own. I put travel plans on hold, tucked away 50% of my salary from working two jobs, and cut back on unnecessary expenses to come up with an initial rent deposit and buy some furniture and appliances. My studio apartment is small, and an air conditioner is too expensive, but I’d rather suffer night sweats than emotional abuse. I’ll be sleeping on a mattress on the floor for a while, but when I think about the fact that I can now leave money and gadgets lying around without worrying I’ll lose them the next day, I almost want to cry with relief. For many of my peers, moving out is an option; for me,

moving out was a necessity. This is why it’s hard for me to stomach #adulting—the hashtag tends to trivialize the struggles that come with growing up. But despite having no semblance of a real childhood, I’m content with the cards I’ve been dealt. This experience has taught me to be resourceful, futureoriented, and financially responsible. Most importantly, it taught me to go after the life I truly deserve. Trying to move out is difficult, and at one point, you’ll be tempted to resign yourself to the vicious cycle you’re already used to anyway. But cohabiting with someone with an addiction of any kind is never healthy, and it’s important to put your foot down and say enough is enough. And I’m proud of myself for making that decision. THINGS YOU CAN BE PROUD OF

SURE, YOUR FACEBOOK WALL IS INUNDATED WITH ENGAGEMENT-RING SELFIES, PICS OF OTHER PEOPLE’S DREAM TRIPS, AND UPDATES ABOUT THEIR BIG PROMOTIONS. FEELING AS THOUGH YOU HAVE NOTHING TO CELEBRATE? NONSENSE! NOT ALL LIFE’S ACHIEVEMENTS ARE ON A GRAND SCALE. HERE ARE A FEW LITTLE THINGS YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF.

1

HACKING OFF YOUR HAIR

You finally let go of those superlong locks and got the snip. Yes, tears were shed when your beautiful hair fell to the ground—but it was so worth it when you saw how incredibly hot those short, summery waves look.

2 ASKING FOR (TEXT) LESLEY MARCHANT. (PHOTOS) SHUTTERSTOCK, UNSPLASH: (TYPEWRITER) NIRZAR PANGARKAR, (PIGGY BANK) FABIAN BLANK, (FLOWERS) NORWOOD THEMES, (PLATES) BROOKE LARK.

A RAISE

You were nervous as hell to ask for one, but confident enough of your worth to do it anyway. And that hard work paid off for you. Literally.

4 5

COOKING A FANCY DINNER

It was kind of annoying how shocked everyone was that you managed to make something so incredibly delicious—until their disbelief turned into heaps of praise. Burning your hand and getting flour all over the floor were a small price to pay.

DINING OUT ALONE

You didn’t feel like cooking, none of your friends were available, the guy on WhatsApp kept saying “hehe” after every message…so you went by yourself. At first you were weirded out, but then you realized how liberating it can feel.

6

GETTING SEVEN NEW FOLLOWERS FROM A SINGLE TWEET

Finally, your wit was acknowledged! Strangers came from far and wide to show their appreciation.

3

BEING KIND TO A STRANGER

There’s something special about doing good for a stranger without expecting anything in return. Even though that small act—a compliment, an offer of help, or paying more than the cover price for a copy of a magazine—wasn’t a big deal for you, know that it made someone else’s day.

7

MOVING OUT

It’s hard out there for an employee on a starting salary. You were beginning to think you’d never be able to afford your own place. But then it finally happened and now the knowledge that your life is finally your own is totally invaluable.

8

SWAPPING POTATO CHIPS FOR KALE CHIPS

Okay, so it was once. And it was way overpriced. And you swore never again. But hey, you were willing to try the healthier option, and surely that should count for something?

9

STARTING A BLOG

You said you were going to do it for months, and now you finally sucked it up and did it. Sure, you only post, like, twice a week and your Facebook Likes are still in the low 20s. But there’s something so exciting about putting your voice out there that it doesn’t matter how many people are hearing it.

ENDING A BAD RELATIONSHIP...

You’re not totally ready for your own just yet, but looking at a baby and having him smile back at you is one of the greatest feelings in the world. Plus it puts to rest all suspicion that you had a bad case of resting bitch face.

11

TALKING BACK TO A STREET HARASSER

You know when a man makes unsolicited remarks on the street, he expects you to avoid eye contact and walk on by? Well that’s exactly what you didn’t do. Putting him, or anyone else, in his place when he screws with you is empowering.

12

BUYING WHAT YOU SAVED UP FOR

There’s something wonderfully satisfying about finally getting that one thing you spent months and months saving up for. You cut down on expenses, religiously set aside cash, and finally it was yours. Yay for you!

You got out before it was too late, and no matter what others think, it wasn’t easy. Moving on was a massive challenge and not having that person in your life was even harder. But you knew you deserved better and acted on that knowledge.

14

…AND STARTING A GREAT ONE

Sure, your best friend just got married to the guy she’s been dating forever. So what? You’ve finally found someone who might just be your person. Part of the excitement is not knowing where it’s going to go and being up for the ride.

15

REKINDLING A FRIENDSHIP

Many of us, for whatever reason, drift apart from one-time BFFs. You didn’t allow that to happen and reached out to someone you hadn’t seen or spoken to in ages, and now you’re as tight as you were years ago.

16 SEEING A

NEW PLACE

We can get so caught up in the humdrum of daily life that we forget to experience new things. You didn’t let that happen. You put aside time to explore, even if it was your own back garden.

17

WASHING THE DISHES RIGHT AFTER YOU EAT

You know what will happen: you’ll cook and cook and leave those dishes for tomorrow, or maybe until Sunday. Monday; definitely Monday. So these days you wash them right away. Man, you’re a damn domestic wonder woman.

18

TAKING THE STAIRS AT WORK

Because you don’t always take the easy way out, okay? And that fifth floor is no joke.

19

STARTING A NEW FITNESS REGIMEN

Instead of wishing you had the strength of Kayla Itsines, you’re working on it. Pushing your body to its limits is tough—and hard to stick to—but you started! Besides, it’s more than you did yesterday.

20

GETTING BACK ON TINDER AFTER ENDING A LONGTERM RELATIONSHIP

You thought you’d stay in bed with pizza and tequila for the rest of eternity—and then you proved yourself wrong. There were tons of tears, but you were eventually able to swipe right on that cute guy.

MAKING A BABY SMILE

DON’T WORRY, BE UNHAPPY

Nowadays, there is a weird pressure to be cheery all the time (insert smiley-face emoji). Here’s why you should own your sucky feelings.

(TE X T) JESSICA CA SSIT Y. (PHOTO) GE T T Y IMAGES.

FACEBOOK RECENTLY took major flak for letting phony news stories slide—but most of your friends’ feeds are probably just as bogus. Bursting with love, job wins, and best-timeever group photos, social media is a happy place. And by happy, we mean really happy—on purpose. Chances are, you too get pulled into this online ruse: “Presenting yourself as upbeat to others is a way of subconsciously elevating your social standing,” says psychologist Randy Paterson, PhD, author of How to Be Miserable: 40 Strategies You Already Use. “It also helps you protect yourself from people who could judge you as a downer.” The farce is perpetuated IRL as well. Think: every time someone asks how it’s going and you respond “Great!” when you really want

to lie on the floor in the fetal position. “When someone admires your buoyant response, you know they’re not admiring your reality,” says Paterson. “This reinforces the sense that if they knew the real you, they would reject you.” It also encourages you to curate out the bad stuff— breakups, financial woes, bad hair days— leaving behind a lot of insincere smiles.

But self-propelled positivity isn’t always advantageous in a fake-it-till-youmake-it kind of way. It can actually make you feel worse overall. When you mask or deny feelings of sadness, fear, anger, anxiety, or disappointment, you’re missing out on a behavioral guidance system that could spur action. For example, that feeling in the pit of your

stomach each morning could be a subtle clue that it’s time to change careers; being lonely in a relationship could offer important hints as to what you want from a partner. To learn from negative emotions, you have to first recognize what you’re feeling, says Kayleigh Pleas, a positive-psychology coach in New York City. “If you can name it, you can tame it,” she says. By breaking the endlessly upbeat cycle, you’re doing everyone a favor. Says Paterson: “It takes courage to say, ‘Actually, things aren’t so great right now.’ Presenting both positive and negative elements shows other people your genuine self—and gives them permission to be human too.”

BREAK OUT OF THE FALSEPOSITIVE TRAP

1

Someone asks “How are you?” and you feel icky.

“Acknowledge the negative—and that the state is temporary,” says Michelle Gielan, author of Broadcasting Happiness. “Something like, ‘I’m nervous about finals. But I made a study guide, so I bet I’ll feel better soon.’ Successful responses move quickly from venting to action plan.”

2

You’re at a wedding but don’t feel celebratory.

Vent, but set a limit, like talking to one person for five minutes, says Pleas. Be honest: “It’s hard to be here because it reminds me of good days with my ex Josh.” Then thank her for listening. (Want to skip the event? Don’t. “Social support is the best predictor of happiness,” says Gielan.)

3

You’re on Facebook…right after a layoff.

THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH FEELING BAD WHEN LIFE IS RUFF.

Post what makes you feel good. Research says whether social media helps or hurts someone’s mood depends on how they feel when using it. If sending an “I’m bummed” snap is cathartic, do it. If not, phone a friend instead. JUNE 2017 đ COSMOPOLITAN

COSMO FICTION

he books you gave me are still in my bedroom. Markus Zusak’s I Am the Messenger. Randy Pausch’s The Last Lecture. Neil Gaiman’s Fragile Things. My best friend offered to take them out of my hands, but they fill the gaps in my shelf perfectly. They get to stay. The Tupperwares you used to send me homemade cookies in are stacked neatly in my pantry. Your mom’s probably wondering where they went. Hindsight is slapping my wrist. I should have known there was a reason you didn’t introduce me to her, or anybody. Or why we never went out during the day. Or why you tiptoed around the word “us.” The roses you gave me on our first date are brown and brittle now. I was cleaning my room one day and found them under my bed. “What the hell is that?” asked my sister, not looking up from her laptop. “Office Christmas party,” I lied, as the aftertaste of that first kiss came rushing back. Remember that? You cutting me off mid-sentence? It was so long ago, it’s like it never happened. You, the girl everybody had a crush on, and me, the girl whose name everybody

mispronounced. Who’d have thought? I still listen to recordings of you reading me poetry. You liked the beatniks—Ginsberg, Kerouac, Burroughs—your voice was like a knife running along their lines to slice them open, methodically, surgically. “We are great writers on the same dreadful type-

writer,” you began. “In my dreams you walk dripping from a sea-journey in tears to the door of my cottage...” You live in my favorite city in the world, but where I have never been. Last year, a box filled with Broadway merchandise came in the mail. I remember bursting into tears in front of the FedEx guy. “You are ridiculous and

I’m sending these back!” I said over the phone. “Happy graduation, sweetheart,” you replied. All that’s left of you are things, Lesley. But only one of us got to start over. While you stroke a brush across a clean Manhattan canvas, I wrap Manila around me like a blanket I’ve had for years. I’ve outgrown it, so the chill comes through and keeps me from falling asleep. I wonder if your bed is warm. There’s only a finite amount of time you get to talk about getting your heart broken before your friends begin to tune you out. There’s only so much you can say about somebody before you catch yourself reprising old words. That’s your signal to get on with it. “I wish we had more pages to write this story on. I still have paragraphs left in me for you,” were the last words you said before you left. But I woke up one morning and realized I no longer wanted to write about you. How do you catch up to somebody who’s already three chapters ahead? So here’s where I make peace with our prewritten ending. When we see each other again, I hope we’re friendly and familiar. But I also hope enough time has passed that we can embrace and then, in different directions, go on walking. Part 4 of 4.

MASTUR CLASS

(TEXT) ANGELICA GUTIERREZ. (PHOT0) SHUTTERSTOCK.

For some reason, plenty of supposedly sexually liberated Pinays still feel iffy when it comes to the topic of masturbation. But in this day and age, it’s high time we stopped feeling guilty and ashamed about touching ourselves. Consider this a crash course from sex therapist Rica Cruz on why giving yourself some love is completely okay.

75

Sex therapist Rica Cruz gets real about why masturbating is one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself. WHY DO YOU THINK HOW CAN WOMEN GET THERE ARE WOMEN OVER BEING ASHAMED OF WHO ARE ALREADY MASTURBATING? PROGRESSIVE ABOUT SEX They have to accept that it’s BUT STILL FEEL ASHAMED okay to do it, that they have the right to pleasure. Because they OF MASTURBATING? have to know their bodies. And

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO? Guilt is more about yourself. You feel guilty because you’ve internalized the standards set by your religion or society, and you went overboard. Shame is more like, “What would people say? Will I be judged?” That’s us. We don’t have guilt. It’s more on, “Nakakahiya eh.” You don’t feel bad by yourself, it’s because [you’re worrying], “How will people think of me?”

76

COSMOPOLITAN đ JUNE 2017

basically, if you don’t know how to pleasure yourself, you won’t be able to talk to your partner about how to pleasure you, and that’s f*cked up. Just stand in front of the mirror and start touching yourself. Look at how hot you are. If you don’t want to do that, just lie down naked and touch yourself. That’s it. Use lubricant so it won’t hurt as much the first time.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF MASTURBATING? Masturbation is healthy if you do it in a way that doesn’t give you clinical distress nor make you depend on it too much. Based on studies, it helps women relax, it helps them sleep, and it makes them happier because of the hormones [that get released]. It helps with dysmenorrhea, because you can use having an orgasm as a remedy. And when you want to finish off your period, masturbate. Your contractions flush it out. Masturbation also gives women the capability to have multiple orgasms. Because you

find out what feels good for you, and you know the timing. Like after you orgasm once, you can rest for 20 seconds then you can go at it again. And because you already know how to manipulate your pleasure, sometimes you can even have succeeding orgasms.

“There’s nothing negative about masturbation.”

And that’s you taking responsibility for your own pleasure. That’s a big part of what sex is about. And of course the connection that you build with your partner. Why else should you masturbate? Basically, there’s nothing negative about masturbation unless you become dependent on it. There are no downsides to masturbation. As long as your relationship doesn’t get affected, it’s totally fine. Want more realness from Rica? Tune in to Boys’ Night Out on Magic 89.9, where she guests every Thursday.

Usually, if you talk to girls who have premarital sex but are not really sexually liberated, their reason for having premarital sex is to satisfy [their boyfriends]. Which isn’t the best disposition when it comes to having sex, right? ‘Cause you should own it! You should have sex because sex feels good. But their reason is “I don’t want him to leave me.” That’s why when you ask them if they masturbate, they can’t, because they still have that guilt. I did a study on this, and Filipinos have high levels of sex guilt. But if you look at it very closely, it’s not actually sex guilt, because we don’t have guilt. We have shame.

HOW NOT TO LOSE YOURSELF TO LOVE

You can (and should!) be independent within a relationship. And there are ways to do it without compromising your bond.

“I used to have such a full life before I was part of a couple!” That’s the complaint I hear so often in my practice, and it’s almost always from women, not men. Why? Well, women tend to find it more challenging to maintain their autonomy once they pair up—mostly because we’ve been groomed by society to think about the needs of others first. That’s especially true when it comes to love. But relationships thrive when both partners give equal attention to me-time as well as together-time. Think about it: Having the freedom to do your own thing as well as spend quality time together 78

prevents you and your S.O. from feeling stifled, which can lead to a split. Plus, solo time enriches your life and makes the moments when you’re in each other’s company way more meaningful. So if you’ve been letting your entire world merge into his, you’d be wise to create some breathing room with these rules.

PLAN SOLO ACTIVITIES When you’re immersed in those first few intoxicating months of a relationship, it’s only natural to find that you have less time for your

usual hobbies. Spending QT with your guy and making him happy makes you happy, so who cares if you’re blowing off a random mani-pedi or spinning class, right? Wrong. Consistently putting yourself second sets an unhealthy precedent for the relationship and sends a message that your life is based solely on what he wants and on his timeline. It’s critical to honor your own desires. That means getting those nails done if you feel like it, hopping on a bike and pedaling your butt off, or doing whatever it is you’ve been neglecting. Most important: Once you commit to these plans, don’t cancel—even if your honey wants to hang. He can wait.

SEE YOUR FRIENDS OFTEN We’ve all known that girl— or maybe you’ve been one—who goes MIA the moment she starts dating a new guy. Not only is this sort of behavior disrespectful of the longstanding bond you have with your friends, it also deprives you of the specific kind of love and attention they bring to your life that, no matter how great your boyfriend is, he does not. To keep from going this route, mandate a weekly or monthly GNO that’s an unmovable event. Whenever it rolls around, don’t ask your guy if it’s okay with him if you go see them, just tell him that

time with your loved ones without him. And truthfully, your guy may not get all those inside jokes or stories (that’s why you spend half your time translating), or he may not find your home—or the people in it—as fascinating as you do. That’s okay! Home can be a place where you go down memory lane with the people who are special to you.

you’re going. Remember: The point of having independence is that it’s not something you ask for; you check in and then you take it.

TAKE A “ME-CATION”

If you’ve been dying to escape for a weekend away and your BF is busy or just not into the idea, don’t wait for him to come around—go by yourself! Rather than viewing time apart as a reason to worry about your relationship, reframe it in your mind as a chance to grow as an individual. Use the trip to become

Time apart from your guy is a chance to grow as an individual and become reacquainted with what you like and don’t like.

reacquainted with who you are separate from him and what you like and don’t like. If all goes well, you’ll come back home with fun stories of new places, foods, and experiences, which will make your conversations with him even more exciting.

VISIT YOUR FAMILY ALONE

It makes sense that you’d want to bring your other half home for holidays. But there’s no need to bring him every time you go, especially if you get along with your family. It can be refreshing for you to spend

Now, in taking all these steps, there is a chance that your man may get a little distressed by all your newfound freedom. At the same time, you may even start to worry that, by doing your own thing, you’re inadvertently pushing him away. Being up-front with him about why you’re taking more time for yourself can help protect each of you against these feelings. Reassure him that what you’re doing is good for you and for him and better for your relationship in the long run. If he’s still struggling with the idea of you having your own life, it may be time to reconsider how much you’re willing to invest in someone who has trouble letting you do you. SEX Q&A BLOWOUT! Honest answers to the private questions you can only ask Cosmo.

Q I keep having steamy dreams about my hot boss. Do I need to quit my job?

( T E X T ) JUL IE VA DN A L . (PHOTOS) NICK ONK EN.

A Don’t start updating your LinkedIn just yet. “If you’re fantasizing safely in your head, there’s not a thing in the world wrong with that,” says certified dream analyst Lauri Loewenberg, author of Dream On It. “Sex dreams are often about a psychological connection, not a physical one.” Phew! So it may mean that you want to emulate your boss’s qualities. Or you could just be practicing in your mind: Loewenberg says that sultry reveries often help us explore untapped fantasies… without ever having to leave our beds.

Q Do libidoboosting vitamins really work?

A Nope. The main ingredient in some of these hyped tablets is the hormone DHEA, which your body already makes and converts into the sex hormones estrogen and testosterone, says Lauren Streicher, MD, associate clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine. But more DHEA does not equal horniness, and there’s not a shred of science behind these supplements. “A woman in her 20s or 30s has plenty of DHEA,” explains Dr. Streicher. “Making that tank fuller doesn’t help with sex drive.” Plus, these “vitamins” can be pricey— up to P1,500 a bottle! Save your cash, and get yourself in the mood in other ways, like keeping your stress levels in check, getting enough sleep, and trying out new sex positions that, ahem, give you a healthy dose of his vitamin D (sorry!).

Q This is totally TMI, but I hate the taste of my guy. How can I enjoy oral more? A “There are two ways to

approach this,” says sexologist Jill McDevitt, PhD. (Options, yay!) First, there’s no rule that says you have to get semen in your mouth when you’re going down on a dude. Next time, switch from using your tongue and lips to your hand when he’s about to orgasm. (And maybe ask him for a little warning.) Or you could try to change his flavor by asking him to tweak his diet. Emphasis on try, because there’s no hard (hee-hee) research that proves this will make him more palatable—but semen is a type of secretion and, theoretically, those can be altered by spicy foods or sweet fruits, says Alex Shteynshlyuger, MD, a urologist in New York City. And you know what doctors say: A pineapple a day keeps…bad flavors away! Or something like that.

Q Is it true that having sex before Spinning class will drain my energy?

A It depends. If you two have your own personal between-thesheets exercise session (aka sex) two or fewer hours pregym, your athletic performance could take a hit, per a recent study in Frontiers in Physiology. Anything earlier than that, though, won’t affect your workout. In fact, getting busy a few hours before a workout could actually be beneficial. Sex gets your blood pumping and can act as a kind of warm-up that loosens your joints and increases your flexibility. Plus, orgasms release endorphins, those feelgood chemicals that can lift your mood and motivation. So you’re thinking of taking up a new sport? First step: Hop into bed.

Q Does sexting count as foreplay? A The most genius thing

about pre-sex: It doesn’t have to happen in the bedroom. According to a study published in the Journal of Sex Research, sexting (as in, exchanging suggestive photos and texts) has become a legit form of digital foreplay—if, that is, it’s used within a committed relationship as a prologue to physical fun. (Unsolicited nudes from a Tinder match? Not so much.) “Sexting can be a safe way of communicating how you feel in a less inhibited yet controlled way,” says the study’s lead author, Rob Weisskirch, PhD, a professor of human development at California State University at Monterey Bay. So type away. Not into sending racy messages? Even an “I can’t wait to see you tonight” can build anticipation. After all, research shows that the hottest foreplay happens in your mind…and now, on an iPhone screen near you.

OVERWHELMED BY DESIRE, HE CLUNG TO HER SPARKLY HEEL.

Q So…do all my guy friends really want to have sex with me?

A Signs point to probably! In one study published in the journal Evolutionary Psychological Science, men were more likely to define a female friend as “a member of the opposite sex to whom I am attracted and would pursue given the opportunity.” (Women, on the other hand, described guy pals as “a friend of the opposite sex.”) “If he’s heterosexual, it is quite possible he feels some physical attraction to you,”

says study author April Bleske-Rechek, PhD, a psychology professor at the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire. Now let’s be clear: That doesn’t necessarily mean he’s constantly aching to hop in the sack with you, and it doesn’t give you a free pass to play with his (potential) romantic feelings—but it does mean that, hey, he might be game if you are.

Q My boyfriend and I are going through a looong dry spell. We need help! A It’s totally natural for couples to go through Sahara-level stretches. But, surprisingly, the oasis might be in your iCal. “A lot of people feel like sex is something that should happen spontaneously, that they shouldn’t have to schedule it,” says sex therapist Ian Kerner, PhD. Not so: The secret to a long and intimate life is the belief that it takes hard work and effort—versus expecting sexy time to just happen—according to a new study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. “Find 15 minutes with your partner to engage in something that generates arousal,” suggests Kerner. This could be kissing on the sofa, sharing a hot dream you had one night, even watching porn together. The sex should follow.

SEX TOY OF THE MONTH 84

COSMOPOLITAN đ JUNE 2017

Q How can I prevent a queef (before I die of awkwardness)?

A When a pocket of air gets trapped in your vaginal canal after switching sex positions (or getting your namaste on in yoga or even just opening your legs too wide), well, it’s gotta come out sometime. If you feel a queef coming on while you’re getting busy, try this trick: “First, say, ‘Hold on a second,’ reach down, put your fingers in your vagina and press down to let the air out,” says Dr. Castellanos. “Because your fingers are in there, the released air won’t make an uncomfortable sound.” Now you two can go back to your regularly scheduled sexing.

Q I swear that my orgasms are way stronger when I’m on my period. Is it all in my head? A The most recent rumor is that increased blood flow to your lady parts during menses makes you more sensitive during sex. But… there’s not a lot of research to back that up. However, there are O-friendly things that happen during your flow. “At that time, women have increased production of prostaglandin, a hormonelike group of lipids that makes your uterus contract, which might make an orgasm feel stronger,” says Dr. Streicher. Speaking of which, keeping your pelvic floor toned with a toy like the Svakom Nova Kegel Balls (P2,450, shopilya.com), an exerciser that works your down-there muscles, can give you awesome-feeling orgasms when you’re not riding the crimson wave.

Q Whenever I go down on my guy, he gets soft. What am I doing wrong? A Absolutely nothing.

“Women often feel like they’re responsible for their partners’ arousal,” says sex therapist Madeleine Castellanos, MD, “but they’re not.” If he’s going limp when you’re down there, it’s likely because of something going on in his (other) head; anxiety can often interfere with arousal. The most important thing is not to take it personally and to talk to him afterward— outside the bedroom. “Say, ‘I want to do this for you, but I notice you’re not really aroused. Is it that you prefer to do something else? Or are you feeling anxious?’” suggests Dr. Castellanos. Staying calm should help you have a constructive—and potentially uplifting!—chat.

What’s the best sex toy…for the tub? Fit the waterproof Lelo Tor 2 ring (P8,300, shopilya.com) around his anchor before you two dip into the bath. Then let the six vibration patterns make serious waves against your clit as you hop aboard and get your rub-a-dub-dub on. (Don’t forget to use lube!)

THE NEW WAY TO GET A JOB

(TEXT) GLYNIS HORNING. (PHOTO) GETTY IMAGES.

Fighting it out on job websites and firing off e-mails with your CV is so last year. Today, you need to think outside the box to land your dream job.

he best jobs aren’t advertised— to nail them, you need to get your foot in the door through smart networking. And today’s 20-somethings have never been better equipped. There’s a massive trend of using social media—from LinkedIn to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram—and millennials have been brought up with them, say recruitment specialists. This makes you well placed to use them to your advantage, and you need every advantage you can get to land a job in today’s tight economy. “Social media gives both the candidate and the company an opportunity to learn more about each other, rather than just a CV or an ad,” says Melissa King of South African firm Profile Placements. “You’re able to get a feel of a company’s culture from its posts or feeds—and vice versa. But your personal posts can be taken the wrong way and put a potential employer off, so be careful.” Here’s how.

1

PERFECT YOUR PROFILE

Personalize your headline: it’s the first thing employers will see on your profile, says Matthew Neethling of ProAppointments in South Africa. “Add key skills to your title, so as to bring up your information when companies and recruiters use Boolean search tools, which will give your profile more exposure.” Describe your duties and responsibilities, and how you made an impact on previous employers, even if you were doing holiday work. Avoid clichés: in 2015, “responsible,” “strategic,” and “effective” topped LinkedIn’s yearly list of most overused words. Be sure to complete all profile sections: social media specialist Darain Faraz, head of global consumer communications at LinkedIn, reports that completed profiles are seven times more likely to be viewed by potential employers, and 11 times more likely to be viewed when they include a photo. “Just make sure you keep it professional,” he told Cosmo in an e-mail.

2

BUILD YOUR NETWORK

Connect with colleagues if you’re already employed, and with recruiters or hiring managers in companies you’d like to work for. Don’t just use the automated connection message; send a note addressing them by name: ‘It was great meeting you at the conference/I’m

impressed by your latest campaign. Let’s stay in touch. All the best, X.”

3

GET ACTIVE

Start or take part in conversations. “If you see an article on an industry topic that interests you, share it and invite discussion by posting it on your LinkedIn home page,” says Faraz. Engage people by asking a question: “What’s your take on (an industry happening/ trend)?” Respond to all comments, even if it’s just “Thanks!” On the LinkedIn company pages, follow companies you’d love to join. You will receive updates if someone leaves or when vacancies are posted.

4

APPLY FOR JOBS

“Use the Jobs tab on your profile to find listings in your industry, then apply for them directly through LinkedIn,” Faraz says. “You can easily set specific job search preferences to your recommended roles at the companies you want to work for and the jobs you’d be a perfect fit for.”

5

STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD

“Ask for recommendations from colleagues, clients, and employers who can speak credibly about your abilities and performance by asking them to focus on a specific skill or personality trait that drives their opinion of you,” Faraz says. “But remember to return the favor by offering meaningful comments and recommendations to your network of connections.”

TWIITTEER “Hail the hashtag!” says Neething. “In the US and the UK, Twitter has become one of the main tools for

recruitment—58% of people use it to look for job opportunities, and from that, 78% go on to company profiles to look for vacancies.” At the time of writing, Twitter had 317 million monthly active users. If you’re already tweeting about your private life, consider creating a separate work account with a username that’s your full name or first name and profession, for example “CindyThe FreelanceWriter.” “This shows how passionate you are about your industry and abilities,” says Paige Austin, national marketing coordinator for Drake International. for: many tweet about new opportunities before these are widely advertised. If you are called for an interview, you’ll have some insight into the company and will find common ground more easily with the interviewer. “Familiarity will make the interview more comfortable,” says Austin.

2

BE ACTIVE

Tweet at least once a day about developments in your industry and achievements (especially yours), and share links and the thoughts of others (be generous). Ask people to retweet. Use photos and videos—a Twitter study found that they, along with quotations, statistics, and hashtags, “have the greatest impact on average retweets.” Show your understanding of industry matters, build your professional reputation, and companies will come hunting for you.

3

USE KEY WORDS WITH THE HASHTAG

This is crucial in your job search, says Neethling: for example, #LegalJobs, #GraduateJobs, #Vacancies, #JobOpportunities, #Recruitment. You can ramp it up a bit in creative industries, such as #HireMe, #Hire(your name). Use career-specific hashtags: #Marketing, or #Freelance #ITjobs.

4

CONNECT WITH TWITTER PEERS AT EVENTS OR COFFEE DATES

“Even today, nothing beats face-to-face connections,” says Austin.

FACCEBBOOOK As in the days before social media, it pays

“HR professionals and recruiters post ads there to widen the net when searching,” says Neethling.

This platform is still new as a source of job opportunities, so it’s easier for you to stand out. It’s a great way to glean insights into companies that your competition won’t necessarily have—a form of visual networking, says Austin. “Young internet users are Instagram’s main demographic, making it the ideal platform for managers looking for young talent.”

2

STAY PROFESSIONAL AND CIRCUMSPECT, OR USE PRIVACY SETTINGS

1

“Keep in mind that your future employers will be watching,” he says. But go ahead and reveal your personality and preferences, from fries to furkids. “Facebook is generally the first place hiring managers go to get a better idea of the ‘real’ you,” says Austin.

If there are companies you fancy, Google the company name plus Instagram—that company’s account will be the first result.

CREATE YOUR OWN INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT TO BRAND YOURSELF.

You can access its Team page and the names of key employees. Google the name plus Instagram for visual insights into corporate culture and functions. Follow key employees and comment.

After a fashion job? Show off your style with favorite fashion finds or looks. If you can include the company’s product, so much the better! “Be sure to tag them in your pictures,” says Natasha de Rauville, a recruiter for the firm Unlimited. “This way, they get to see you and, in turn, appreciate the free publicity you’ve given them among your followers.”

LEAP RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX Take a lesson from young Lukas Yla, a marketing executive at a start-up in Lithuania. He moved to San Francisco last year to look for a job at a tech company, but had little hope without a US degree or experience. So he found a bakery that made great donuts and began handdelivering them to IT executives—with his CV in the box. He landed 10 interviews from 40 deliveries, including one from the donut company itself. He also became a media sensation. Consider hand-delivering your CV with a bunch of flowers or treats to HR managers. You may not get a job immediately, but they’re sure to remember you. Just make sure it’s a cracker CV. “Technology has taken away much of life’s personal element,” says Drake International’s Paige Austin. “This is a great way to stand out from the competition.”

WITH TOILET TROUBLE ON A DATE

MY

coworker and I were 40 minutes into a business road trip when it hit me: I was about to, um, crap my pants. “I totally have to pee”—I lied, starting to sweat—“like, urgently.” This wasn’t my first bathroom emergency. It’s happened on the train, at the department store, during brunch. With so much experience, I can read my audience. This woman got squeamish when I said spicy food makes me perspire, so I knew she couldn’t handle the truth. Thankfully, we made it to a McDonald’s. I’m grateful I didn’t soil myself, but why couldn’t I have just said I might? Everybody poops... Why do we pretend otherwise? I know plenty of gals who talk openly about sex— including embarrassing incidents—but are tight-lipped about their time on the toilet, as if they’ve never been in a crappy situation. In fact, women are on average twice as likely as men to endure chronic constipation, and up to 1 in 5 Americans suffers from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and its hallmark symptoms, including diarrhea. “There is a basic disgust associated with poop,” says Nick Haslam, PhD, author of Psychology in the Bathroom. He points out that feces has always been linked to disease and infection (truth: it’s not as nasty as you think; it’s 75 percent water). And now some candid celebs are loosening up the conversation. Cameron Diaz writes in The Body Book about inspecting your poo to monitor your health. And J.Law said on The Late Show that she sh*t her pants while dealing with a possible ulcer. Is shame getting flushed away? “Reducing stigma is a good thing,” says Rose George, author of The Big Necessity: The Unmentionable World of Human Waste and Why It Matters. Talking about defecation— especially with doctors—could help diagnose medical issues more quickly. Here, some backend background for your next exchange.

COSMOPOLITAN đ JUNE 2017

“Don’t overthink it,” says Cosmo columnist Logan Hill. Just say you’ll brb. “Guys often assume girls are in there doing their makeup. Let him wait.” If things get clogged, keep calm and find a plunger. No luck? Fill a trash can with hot water, then pour it quickly into the bowl. The sudden weight and rush of H 2 O might break up the backup. Then light a match (from the book you keep in your purse, natch) to release sulfur dioxide, which can mask odor.

WHY SH*T GOES CRAZY

The many things that can mess with your regularity

YOUR PERIOD

Hormonal fluctuations (mainly, a drop in estrogen and progesterone) may cause changes in your GI tract. Some people become constipated; others get diarrhea. The Pill can help regulate hormones and your BMs. Otherwise, managing your waste is about being proactive: “If you tend to get constipation, increase your fiber and water intake,” suggests Laura Raffals, MD, a gastroenterologist at the Mayo Clinic. OTC meds can help diarrhea.

because your gut senses your anxiety. “Stress causes cross talk between the brain and bowels,” says Dr. Raffals. Neuropeptides fire up the gut, contracting the large intestine. The result: diarrhea or cramping. Try relaxation techniques like deep belly breathing or positive visualization.

LACK OF PRIVACY

“Shy bowel” is a real thing. Exhibit A: There’s someone in the stall next to you, and you can’t produce, even though you feel the urge. It’s important that you do, though, so find another loo. “Miss your window and it can become hard

to go later,” says Beth Manoogian, MD, a gastroenterologist at the University of Michigan Health System. When stool sits in your colon, it gets harder, making it, well, harder to pass.

A HANGOVER

Alcohol, especially wine and beer, increases the motility of your gut, making everything move faster. This means less time for the colon to absorb water from the stool, resulting in the crass-but-accurate “beer shits.” Your best cure? Imodium.

STRESS

GET THINGS MOVING

This stuff will help you seamlessly answer the call of doody.

FIBER

Via veggies, fruits, legumes, nuts, and whole grains, fiber works to bulk up stool. Eat 25 grams per day (about a cup of bran cereal, a pear, and half a cup of black beans)—gradually. “Too much, too soon can cause bloating and gas,” says Kristi King, RDN, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

WATER

H2O is essential for avoiding constipation. Besides plain old agua, broths and many fruits and vegetables are hydrating. Even coffee and tea count!

PROBIOTICS

Our gut is filled with trillions of bacteria. Probiotics fight the bad ones and help replenish the good ones. Yogurt, miso, sourdough bread, and some cheeses are solid sources. They may be more effective when taken with prebiotics (found in onions, bananas, asparagus, and garlic).

H OW T O D EAL

WHEN YOU ARE TRAVELING BUT WISH YOU WERE CAMPED OUT ON A TOILET

Antidiarrheal meds can slow things—but may not kick in for hours. Until then, do diaphragmatic breathing: “With a straight back, inhale through the nose, expanding the abdomen,” says Laurie Keefer, PhD, an associate professor of psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine. “Exhale through the mouth. Repeat.” As oxygen hits the gut, gotta-go muscles should spasm less.

Herb-infused water

DOs

Dehydration causes water retention, so drinking H2O aids in flushing out toxins and stops bloating. Adding herbs makes water taste better, encouraging you to drink more!

4

Carminative teas

These teas fight gas and flatulence—peppermint, bergamot, and chamomile are my favorites. Earl grey or black chai are yummy tea blends that help fight flatulence.

3

Anti-bloat herbs and spices Incorporate tarragon, mint or peppermint, lemongrass, ginger, basil, pandan leaf, cinnamon, chamomile, and cloves into your diet as much as you can.

Anti-inflammatory teas

SALABAT, A.K.A. GINGER TEA (THE FRESHLY BOILED AND NOT THE SUGARY BOTTLED KIND), AND TURMERIC OR LUYANG DILAW SHOULD BE A STAPLE IN YOUR FLAT BELLY CUPBOARD. Vegetables are high in water, nutrients, and fiber, but fiber has a way of temporarily distending your tummy. Instead, you can try chayote, squash, bottle gourd or upo, green papaya, zucchini, and asparagus.

6. Protein Choose lean chicken and fish approximately the size of a checkbook per serving. Protein has a diuretic effect on your body, meaning you’ll urinate more frequently. Cook any way except deep-fry, use minimal oil, and serve without caloriedense sauces or gravy.

7

Sleep

Sleep deprivation leads to elevated cortisol, the dreaded stress hormone. It also makes you crave sugar and carbs, which causes even more bloating!

8

Slow eating

Chew well and eat slowly. You impair the entire digestive system and tend to swallow a lot of air when you eat too quickly.

Papayas and bananas Fruits are high in fiber and fructose, which are majorleague culprits for bloating. Papaya has the enzyme papain, which helps break down fiber. Bananas are a hitand-miss for some people, but the saba kind seems better for most. Bananas contain potassium, which helps relieve water retention. WWW.COSMO.PH

5 Anti-bloat vegetables

DON’Ts

1

Salads and raw veggies

I KNOW, RIGHT? SALADS ARE A GO-TO WEIGHT LOSS MEAL FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE, BUT THEY’RE PACKED WITH A LOT OF FIBER, AND A BOATLOAD OF FIBER MEANS INTESTINAL GAS AND STOMACH DISTENTION.

8 Eggs A few of my

celebrity clients who took a food test were surprised to find out that they were intolerant to egg whites, not yolks. Most people who want to lose weight skip the yolks, but check with a nutritionist to be sure.

2

Cruciferous vegetables

Broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage are notorious bloaters, whether cooked or uncooked! So are turnips, rutabagas, and radishes, which are root vegetables in the cabbage family.

3

Fructoserich fruits If you must eat fruits, choose the ones that are easily digested—such as berries, watermelon, cantaloupe, papaya, and banana—and eat them on an empty stomach.

4 Gluten, dairy, and

the usual suspects

On the rare occasions that I consume gluten or dairy, I make sure they are of premium quality, or I eat them only during special occasions. MSG and artificial preservatives are classified as “never” in my book.

and carbonated drinks 6 Fizz Fizz equals a whole lot of bubbles, containing a whole lot of gas, resulting in a whole lot of flatulence! The copious amount of sugar isn’t helpful either.

7. Excessive exercise Resting from your usual beast-mode routine will bring down hypertrophy, swelling, and inflammation. Dial it down, but keep moving—yoga or walking at a leisurely pace will aid in detoxification.

5 Alcohol Just look at how your face puffs up when

you drink—your body is robbed of water and electrolytes, causing your tissues to swell.

13

9

Beans and legumes

Soaked or unsoaked, these guys tend to promote intestinal gas.

10 Nuts Nuts are one of the

healthiest snacks on Earth, but they’re difficult to digest and can give you a “beer belly” look.

much spice 11 Too Spices stimulate the release of stomach acid, so flavor your food with anti-bloating herbs instead.

12 Gum Chewing gum

causes you to swallow excess air, which gets trapped in your tummy and causes bloating.

Too much salt It makes you retain water. But Himalayan salt contains minerals that facilitate the absorption of fluid in your cells.

YOUR ART ON YOUR SLEEVE

Independence means different things to different people, and for some of you Cosmo Girls, it might mean having the freedom to get a tattoo. Whether you have your eye on a minimalist design or a full-on sleeve, it’s best to arm yourself with good intel, especially if you’re a first timer. Flip the page to find out everything you need to know before you commit to that ink.

PLANS THIS WEEKEND?

GIRLS INK

Tattoos have never been less taboo—nearly half of millennials have at least one. If you’re thinking of going under the needle, consult this pre-parlor guide.

THINK BEFORE YOU INK FOR A DESIGN YOU’LL LOVE FOREVER… ➔ Scroll through Instagram for inspo (two of our favorites: @tattoos_of_instagram and @tattooinkspiration). Ditto Tattoodo. com, a media hub that could be Pinterest’s rebellious cousin. ➔ Make it meaningful. “The more purpose a tattoo has, the less likely you’ll regret it,” says tattoo artist Keith “Bang Bang” McCurdy (Rihanna and Cara Delevingne are among his clients). ➔ Test-drive a tat with The Skin City (@theskincity), which offers waterbased temporary tattoos (black, white, or metallic) that can last five to seven days. ➔ Find your spirit artist: Most publish their portfolios online, but McCurdy suggests doing a drive-by. “Ask to see their unfiltered, healed work—ideally in person, not in a picture.”

“This may sound strange, but getting a tattoo is a form of relaxation for me. The meanings behind them are never too deep—I like them a little funny and with a good back story.” —Shaira Luna, photographer

SAFETY FIRST! When you arrive at a parlor, you should be asked to sign a waiver form. Artists should have single-use needles (or those sterilized in autoclaves) and disposable gloves. All surfaces, like tattoo tables and soap bottles, should be covered to prevent contamination.

ARE YOU REALLY READY?

Take a beat if you check one or more boxes. Is this a spontaneous decision? Are you afraid of pain or needles? Will tats appear unprofessional at work? (Some will be hard to cover.)

Do you feel peer pressure to get one? Are you unsure about the design or placement? Can you see wanting to have it removed?

TATTOO TLC FOR THE FIRST TWO WEEKS…

IT’S GO TIME! DAY-OF DOS AND DON’TS DO wear loose, dark clothes for easy access…and to avoid stains. DON’T take aspirin, ibuprofen, or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or drink alcohol beforehand. Both can cause heavier bleeding. DO expect pain. The hardest areas: anywhere close to the bones (like the ribs) or joints (the knees and elbows), or with lots of nerve endings (the palms). The least sensitive? Fleshier areas like your thighs and upper outer arms. DON’T bring your gang. It could distract your artist or cause you to move too much. DO eat a full meal beforehand. Bring some snacks to keep your blood sugar up. DON’T remove the bandage for at least two hours after. DO check in with your artist after the tattoo has healed to see if it needs a touch-up. It’s normal for some ink to seep out during the healing process. SOURCE: MEGAN MASSACRE, TATTOO ARTIST AT GRIT N GLORY IN NEW YORK CIT Y

➔ Wash it with a fragrancefree, antibacterial soap several times a day. ➔ Let skin air-dry, then apply a thin layer of a healing balm. ➔ After two to three days, swap the balm for an unscented moisturizer. ➔ No matter how much your tattoo scabs, don’t pick. It might peel away some color and cause scars, which can warp the design. ➔ Avoid soaking in water (baths, pools, hot tubs), which can expose your tat to bacteria or cause scabs to fall off prematurely. (Quick showers are fine.) After that… ➔ Moisturize daily with unscented lotion. Dry skin can make colors look dull. ➔ The sun can cause ink to fade. Use SPF 30 every time you head out.

ARE TATS ADDICTIVE?

A reported 32 percent of those with ink say yes. “The process releases endorphins and adrenaline. If you’re sensitive to their effects, you could get hooked,” says psychiatrist Howard Forman, MD. Braving a tat can also make you feel more alive—a feeling you may want to recapture.

WANDERLUST

HANOI ON MY MIND

Vacations are more than just a chance to get away—sometimes, they have the power to change your life.

B

efore my boyfriend Joff and I went on a two-week vacation to Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam back in December 2015, moving to Hanoi had never crossed our minds. Although we’d toyed with the idea of moving, it had become one of those things pushed aside and saved for when the perfect opportunity presented itself. Like a lot of people, we’d filed away the dream of moving somewhere new into that folder in our heads that

LM

kept all our fumbled attempts at better lives, lumped together with forgotten promises, New Year’s resolutions, and drunken plans. For years, a passage from Dave Eggers’s book You Shall Know Our Velocity rang in my head: “My mind was a condemned church with bats, but I swung from this dark mood when I thought about leaving.” Living in Manila, for the most part, was like being in a doomed relationship. All the warning signs and red flags

were there, but still I tried to focus on the good things. I hoped things would change, that they’d get better, but no matter how many silver linings I tried to count, the painful truth always had a way of rearing its ugly head. Hanoi was the last stop on our trip, and I fell in love with the city immediately. From its picturesque lakes and tree-lined streets that had quaint cafés and eateries spilling out from all sides, to the controlled chaos of the Old Quarter, and, of course, the fantastic grub you could get on every street corner for a song. On the last night of our trip, we grabbed dinner with some friends who’d moved to Hanoi a few years back. Their local expat friends joined us: a young Scottish couple who had just moved to the city, a middleaged Australian couple who had been living there for 15 years, and a British guy in his thirties who’d been a few years deep into his life there. We made small talk and asked them how they liked living in Hanoi, and it was something Sophie (one-half of the Scottish couple) said that stayed with us and became the catalyst we needed to make our move. She said that of all the places in Southeast Asia she’d lived in—and there were a few—Hanoi was her favorite. Now, that might sound like benign chatter to you, but it was music to our ears.

It was just what we needed to hear. After we got back from our trip, it took just a few weeks of settling back into our lives until we finally caved, no longer able to deny what we both knew in our gut: it was time to go. Five months later, we were back in Hanoi, and this time, for good. Moving to another country may sound intimidating, and before you actually do it, it is. But what a lot of people forget about major life-changing decisions is that the choice to move is really just the beginning of a slew of smaller, more manageable choices you’ll have to make afterwards. Somehow this makes it a lot easier. Having another person to share the anxiety of a massive life upheaval doesn’t hurt either. It’s been a year since we made the big move, and although it hasn’t always been smooth sailing, I couldn’t be happier about our decision. Despite living here for just over a year, I still feel like I haven’t pulled back all the layers to this city just yet. There’s still so much to be experienced here and in other cities in Vietnam. It’s far from perfect, and for all its beauty, there’s a lot of grit and darkness, too. But just like when you get a song stuck in your head, the only way to get it out is to sing the entire song through, and for Joff and me, that’s exactly what Hanoi is.

MY SECRET TO BEING HAPPY

CLARA BENIN

The 23-year-old singersongwriter finds liberation in music.

108

Clara Benin, the impossibly pure voice behind indie-folk songs “Closure” and “Human Eyes,” learned to play the guitar in high school when her family moved to a farm in Silay, Negros Occidental. The farm is where she now finds herself, after graduating with a degree in music business management last year, and releasing the album Human Eyes and the EP Riverchild in 2015. It’s a muchneeded retreat of sorts: Aside from the occasional gig or collab, Clara spends her days waking up to the sunrise, working as a barista at her family’s coffee shop, and writing music and lyrics. “I’m a very reserved person, so I don’t open up much, even to my best friends. Over the years, though, I’ve learned to be more comfortable with writing and singing about personal matters. I’m itching to release new stuff, but I’m waiting for the perfect time.”

“When I make music, I feel free to be myself. It’s so much easier when you have a melody and you write what you feel in poetry form. You turn your feelings into art.”
