The harder decisions follow - what should I study, how will I manage online classes, where can I get help finding a job? Luckily, your mind can be put to rest. The guide also
provides study skills and test-taking skills so you can blow the top off of every exam! If you already have a career in mind, but need help planning a way to obtain it, visit the website’s online career center to find step-by-step career planning techniques as well as supplemental videos and tips to help you prepare for job interviews. If you are uncertain about what job to pursue, there are even self-assessments that examine your personality, values, and knowledge and then match you to various careers.

These Rio Salado students have taken the next step by pursuing education to better their lives. Gregory Kosko In January 2009, Gregory Kosko lost his job due to corporate cutbacks, and soon after was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Despite these setbacks, Kosko reached his goal of college graduation thanks to the support of his wife, Rio Salado’s Disabilities Resources department, and his own perseverance. “Having attained an associate degree at Rio Salado, I feel a sense of accomplishment,” Kosko said. “What I see in my future is happiness. This is born from the satisfaction achieved through learning.”

Kosko is currently working toward a bachelor’s degree from NAU, and ultimately hopes to earn an MBA, and get a job that allows him to assist others with disabilities.
Jill McNair Even though Jill McNair had an MBA, she applied to many companies without success. “After months of fruitless searching, I decided to go back to school and update my skill set,” said McNair. “I also decided that I wanted to pursue a new field that was interesting, rewarding and in high-demand.” McNair looked into educational technology programs at a nearby state university, but found it too expensive even with financial aid. She then came across Rio Salado College’s eLearning Design program. “I decided to go for it,” said McNair who completed the program in May and is now starting a freelance business.
Emily Carlson Emily Carlson had a dream to become an attorney but her disability threatened to stand in the way. She was working as a paralegal and had a passion for the law. After researching various options with her boss, they decided Rio Salado’s paralegal program would be best in helping Carlson achieve her goal. “One day I decided I need to take control of my life and not let my disability define who I am,” Carlson said. “Online courses helped me to become a self-starter. Now there’s nothing stopping me from reaching my goal.” Carlson is starting her second term at Rio as a member and vice president of the Phi Theta Kappa, and is in the honor’s program. Her goal is to complete a bachelor’s degree at ASU and become an attorney in personal injury defense.

New Tools, New Way to Start

Rio Salado College has two new tools to help students prepare for success in an online learning environment.

StartatRio.com Start at Rio is a new website that provides a checklist to help students gain an overview of the college while streamlining the process of enrolling. There are two checklists: one for students seeking to earn a degree or certificate at Rio Salado, and one for students who are taking online classes for personal or career interest, or to transfer. Checklist steps include: Explore our Programs, Create an Account, Funding Options, Register for Classes, Buy Textbooks and Access Student Email. One of the final checklist steps is to participate in the NSO101 class which is presented in RioLearn
so students can familiarize themselves with how online classes are taken at the college.
“Start at Rio is like a roadmap for students to plan their educational journey,” said David Hall, director of academic advisement at Rio Salado.“Ultimately,
our goal is to make the journey as easy to navigate as possible by providing the tools students need to be successful.”
New Student Orientation New Student Orientation (NSO101) is an online class that introduces students to Rio Salado’s services and procedures, and is conveniently offered in RioLearn, the college’s online learning management system. The orientation class is free, and takes approximately two hours to complete. In NSO101, students will learn about: •

Monica Martinez, a student in the
college’s Teacher-in-Residence program, said she likes the convenience that the new orientation provides.
“It’s always great to have everything you need in one place,” Martinez said. “It makes everything easier and saves time.”

It’s back to school time! And in honor of September being National College Savings Month, here are some tips on how to make your college experience not only enjoyable, but affordable as well. After all, we don’t want you surviving on a diet of Ramen noodles and leftover pizza the next four years!
5 Ways to Save $ in College

Go to a community college your first 2-3 years
A year’s worth of tuition at a Maricopa Community College, based on two 15-credit semesters, is $2,280, while tuition at a public Arizona university such as ASU, NAU or the U of A averages out to around $9,700 a year. At $76/credit for Maricopa County residents, tuition at Rio Salado College is the best value in town!

Apply for scholarships
You don’t have to be a valedictorian with a 4.4 GPA to be eligible for scholarship money to pay for your school. There is thousands of dollars’ worth of scholarship money available to all kinds of students. You just have to do a little research. Start by visiting riosalado.edu/fa and click on “Scholarships.”

Live at home
As enticing as it is to break free from the chains of parental supervision and taste the sweet fruit of complete independence, living on a college campus can cost an additional $10,000 a year.

The traditional model of in-person learning is an effective way to go to school, but the ability to access education from anywhere is cost-effective and convenient. Taking online classes not only lets you complete your studies on your own time, but also saves you on fuel (and parking) because you won’t have to travel to class every day.
Although that addicting venti mocha Frappuccino every morning can be satisfying and give you an extra boost to start your day, it is very expensive. Purchasing coffee like this can add up quickly and cost you $500-700 dollars a year! Save your money by buying your own coffee or espresso maker and making your coffee at home.

Transfer basics Overview of In-State University Transfer Community colleges offer Arizona students a way to save money while pursuing a bachelor’s degree. Students can save thousands of dollars on tuition by taking their first two years of college at Rio Salado College. Students who earn an associate degree can then take advantage of many transfer options, both in-state and out, to complete their bachelor’s degree.
How do I know if I am a transfer student?
Is the AGEC a transfer degree?
You are a “transfer student” if you are thinking about a career which requires a bachelor’s degree, and you wish to begin your studies at a community college or tribal college and then transfer to a university to complete a bachelor’s degree.
No. The AGEC is only one component of the transfer programs at community colleges and tribal colleges. However, there are three transfer degree programs which include the AGECs: the Associate of Arts degree (AA), the Associate of Business degree (ABus), and the Associate of Science degree (AS).
What is an AGEC? Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC) is a block of 35 general education credits that fulfills the lower division general education requirements at ASU, NAU or U of A.
What courses are included in an AGEC? The courses in an AGEC are similar to the areas required for a high school diploma or a GED: English, composition, mathematics, arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and physical and biological sciences. Many community colleges also include courses such as speech, foreign languages, and computer science.
Are there different kinds of AGECs? There are three AGECs which correspond to various career paths. AGEC-A – For arts-related studies (art, music, theatre, literature, philosophy, history, political science, psychology, sociology) AGEC-B – For business related studies AGEC-S – For science-related studies (biology, physics, chemistry, geology, or pre-med)
Should I complete an associate’s degree before transferring to a university? It depends on the career or major you are thinking about. Please speak with an academic advisor or counselor about the details of the major you have in mind.
How many credits are there in an AGEC and associate’s degree? The AGEC-A and AGEC-B are 35 credits; the AGEC-S, because it allows for additional math and science credits, can range from 35 to 38 credits. The three transfer degrees (AA, ABus, and AS) typically are 64 credits.
How many credits transfer? The universities will generally accept up to 64 credits (semester hours) from the community and tribal colleges. This does not include remedial or developmental coursework. Resources: Riosalado.edu/transfer; Aztransfer.com

Facebook. Twitter.Youtube. As much as students try to concentrate on online classes, these sites always seem to quickly creep onto the computer screen. There is an inevitable tendency to stray when it’s you keeping you accountable.
Luckily, we have some tips to keep you focused and successful in your coursework.
Turn off all electronic devices and hide them under your bed or give them to a reliable friend to keep for a little bit. This means switch off the TV, too! Create a separate workspace away from the noise. This means shut the door. If needed put a sign up saying “in-class” or “taking an online class” to let others know you are trying to get work done. If you have a never ending to-do list running through your head, write your list down, and set it aside for later.

Use a reward system. For example, for every hour of class work you get 20 minutes of Facebook or Twitter time. Take breaks! Walk away from your computer and interact with someone or take a walk outside. It will make you more productive when you log back in and less likely to use social media sites for too many of your breaks.

Write a status on Facebook or a Tweet that says you are studying.

Write down your motivations for taking classes and post it where you can see it. It serves as a reminder and will help you stay focused. Download an app or software program to block out social media sites. These include getcoldturkey.com, and macfreedom.com. Finally, if all else fails, visit one of Rio Salado’s many locations to find a quiet study corner.
