TIPS for Online Success
So you’ve registered for your first class at Rio Salado College. Great! The next step? Preparing for the world of online classes. If you have never taken an online class, we’ve compiled some tips that can help make you a successful online student. 1. Get organized!
Taking an online class means you have to be especially organized. It is up to you to know when assignments are due, and to allocate the time to complete them. Because you don’t have to physically travel to a classroom, it may be easy to miss deadlines. Rio Salado’s course management system, RioLearn, gives you calendar and alert tools to help manage time and coursework.
2. Build a relationship with your instructor.
Online students can take an entire class or block of classes without ever meeting the instructor inperson! Therefore, it is important to communicate often with your instructors. Give feedback on assignments, ask questions, and let them know you are taking the class seriously. Chat rooms, online discussion groups, email, phone, texting – take advantage of whatever communication methods are used in your class.
4. Budget your time.
While online college offers the flexibility of classes on your schedule, students should still expect a minimum time investment of 7-10 hours per week per class. There may not be commuting involved, but there is still studying and homework to complete. And because many online students also work and have family responsibilities, a dedicated block of time should be carved out each day (if possible) for school work.
5. Technology happens!
Sometimes, forces beyond your control (such as thunderstorms or your dog unplugging your laptop) may cause technical difficulties with your online class. Stop! Take a deep breath! Remember that Rio Salado students have access to 24/7 technical support. The Technology Helpdesk also can assist you with username/ password questions, opening pdfs, downloading files from the Internet and more.
3. Be careful what you write!
Email is the communication method of choice for today’s generation. Remember that some aspects of verbal communication – facial expressions, body language, gestures – are lost in translation when you communicate through writing. Words on a page can come across differently than anticipated. Use correct grammar and spelling when emailing your instructors, instead of jargon and lingo (do U come hre ofN).
Creating College Success! Get more practical advice on how to succeed at Rio Salado College. “Creating College Success” (CPD115), a onecredit class, teaches students how to select and develop effective academic strategies, increase self-awareness and develop self-management skills. The class is available starting July 2009.

FINANCIAL Aid Eligibility Six Common Questions
1. Do I have to be a full-time student to qualify for financial aid?
Students must be enrolled in 6 credit hours or more (half-time or greater) to be eligible for federal student loans. Rio students often stagger the start dates of their classes. For purposes of financial aid, eligibility is determined by the actual number of credits in which a student is enrolled during the academic term. The class start dates must fall within the start and end of the standard academic term in order to be counted.
4. If I have defaulted on a prior student loan, am I eligible for financial aid?
A student with a defaulted loan is not eligible to receive Title IV federal student aid (grants and loans among other programs) unless the defaulted loan is resolved with the U.S. Department of Education. When applying for financial aid, students with a prior default must provide Rio’s Financial Aid Office with documentation that their eligibility to receive Federal Student Aid has been reinstated.
2. Will my financial aid eligibility change if I 5. What is a book voucher and is it a good withdraw from one or more of my classes? option for me? It can. Financial aid eligibility is based, in part, on a student’s academic performance during an academic term. Withdrawing from one or more of your classes could affect your academic eligibility to receive financial aid in the future, so be sure to check into this if you consider withdrawing from any of your classes.
3. If I owe a prior balance, am I eligible for financial aid?
Yes, but in order to register for classes and receive financial aid, students must resolve outstanding balances from any prior term owed to any college of the Maricopa Community College District including Rio Salado.
The book voucher allows students to purchase textbooks prior to the disbursement of their financial aid. As long as the student’s anticipated financial aid is enough to cover tuition and fees, academically-eligible students who qualify for financial aid can receive a book voucher after they have submitted all required application documents to Rio’s Financial Aid Office.
6. When will I receive financial aid disbursement?
Rio Salado College disburses financial aid funds to eligible students’ accounts once the drop/add period has ended and once grades for all prior classes have been posted.

COMMENCEMENT Speakers Inspire with Determination, Patience Alana Parker and Loretta Price couldn’t be more different, and yet more similar. One is a mother. One is a grandmother. One is starting her career. The other is supplementing an already diverse work history. Both served as commencement speakers at Rio Salado College’s graduation ceremony. And both have overcome tough individual challenges to reach this goal. Parker, whose life-long dream is to become a nurse, graduated with an Associate in Applied Science in Nursing degree. “Earning my degree has empowered me,” said Parker, who began taking classes in 2001. “I am excited to help improve the quality healthcare offered to individuals in my community.” While working toward her degree, Parker juggled school, a job, and the family responsibilities that come with having a husband and two young sons. Soon, however, the pressure began to build. “I faced massive stress during the first two blocks of my program,” said Parker, who reached out to Melanie Abts, Rio Salado counseling faculty member, for support. “Melanie taught me how to relieve my stress using different methods of relaxation,” said Parker. “She helped me understand my studying method, and how to prepare and minimize test anxiety.” Having conquered stress, Parker then found herself dealing with self-confidence issues. “I would look at others in my class and feel under qualified due to my lack of work and educational experience,” said Parker. “I realized halfway into the program that I could achieve anything I put my mind to.”
Alana
r Parke
That same determination is a trait also exhibited by Loretta Price, who earned an Associate in Arts degree in Public Administration. In 1976, Price immigrated to the United States from South Africa, and worked for a car rental company for many years before getting a recruiter position with Maricopa County. At work, she joined a cohort program where county employees receive onsite training to earn certificates or degrees through Rio Salado College. “I was apprehensive because this was my first exposure to any American school,” said Price. “My educational experience in South Africa was high school and three months of college.” Price’s cohort completed their certificate program in 2006, and decided to continue with the degree program. When the cohort ended in 2008, Price forged ahead, taking online classes on her own to complete her degree. “I learned it’s never too late to start your education,” said Price. “Rio Salado took away all the obstacles and made getting an education very easy.”

New 8-Week Class Option How does the 8-week class option work?
Students can complete their degrees faster now that Rio Salado offers classes that are 8 weeks in length.
• Check Rio Salado’s online class schedule to see if a class is offered in the 8-week format. • For most classes, you select the 8-week option when you start your class in RioLearn. However, some science classes require you to select the 8-week class section at the time of registration. • If you choose not to select the 8-week class option, your class remains its original length (e.g. 14 weeks).
The new 8-week class option is available for a majority of Rio Salado’s online classes. If you prefer fast-paced classes, this option is for you! However, you can continue to choose the traditional 14week option if you prefer a moderatelypaced class.
What are the advantages of 8-week classes?
• Lets you complete more classes in a shorter period of time • Empowers you to go from part-time to full-time status • Leads to faster degree completion
When do I choose this Option?
You can choose the “8-week class option” within the first 7 days of your course start date. The RioLearn system will automatically create an 8-week calendar for you and adjust your assignments, quizzes and examinations accordingly.

Partnership with Pearson Custom Publishing, Follett Higher Education Group and Rio Salado College Maricopa Community Colleges Innovation of the Year Award 2007-08
A Head Start on College Throughout the Valley high school seniors are celebrating graduation and preparing for college. Among these teens are students who have already completed their first year of college while they were in high school. How did they accomplish this? The students took advantage of Rio Salado College’s dual enrollment program.
e Wayn
r
Unge
One student who has benefited from the program is Wayne Unger, a recent graduate of Mountain Pointe High School. Unger started taking dual enrollment classes during his sophomore year and completed high school with 40 college credits.
“The dual enrollment program was a great opportunity for me,” said Unger. “It is allowing me to pick a flexible schedule this fall. With these credits, I’m seriously considering a double major, too.” While students like Unger are appreciating the flexibility and likelihood of graduating from college early, they are not the only people to see the program’s benefits. “Dual enrollment is a tremendous asset for our daughter,” said Kathrine Komarnisky, whose daughter, Sydney, is preparing for her junior year at Hamilton High School in Chandler. “There is the obvious financial savings, but it is also teaching her responsibility and preparing her for college life.”
Rio Salado College has partnered with 50 high schools in the greater Phoenix area to make the dual enrollment program a reality. For a class to qualify for dual enrollment, the syllabus and textbooks are evaluated by Rio Salado to ensure it is a college-level course. According to Dr. Vernon Smith, Vice President, Teaching and Learning at Rio Salado College, “in order to teach dual enrollment classes through Rio Salado College, high school instructors must meet strict qualification requirements, which usually include having obtained a master’s degree in their teaching discipline and being approved by Rio’s Faculty Chair.” Dual enrollment credits transfer to all Arizona public colleges and universities, as well as in other states. Students also can take online classes through Rio Salado College even if their high school does not have a dual enrollment partnership established. Students under the age of 18 need parental permisson. Rio Salado’s online classes start every Monday and are supported by 24/7 instructional and technical support.

CLASS Promotes Sales Techniques In only eight weeks you can learn the ins and outs of the sales profession through a new online class created by Rio Salado College and Kaiser Companies.
New Online
Business Degree Students can now earn a business degree online through Rio Salado College. The Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in General Business program introduces students to the major areas of business, including accounting, marketing, management, and human relations. By providing a broad overview of the business program, this degree allows students to select a specific area of interest within the business field to pursue in future studies. Students will need 61-63 credits to complete the online business degree.
The Sales Professional I class outlines the basic principles of relationship selling, and reviews the theories and methods of successful sales strategies. The class is designed for people who are looking to enter into a sales profession or revitalize their selling techniques, and also presents an employee training opportunity for business owners. “The techniques taught in this class are especially important in today’s economy when strategizing on how best to reach your target markets,” said Chris Bustamante, Vice President of Community Development and Student Services at Rio Salado. “Employees can really benefit because at some point everyone uses sales and customer service practices in their jobs.” Specific topics covered in the class include how to build customer relationships, prospect and qualify leads, overcome objections, make effective presentations and close the deal. The online class is led by a certified sales expert. “Kaiser Companies is extremely passionate about sales education and helping others to realize their full potential,” said Jim Kaiser, President and CEO of Kaiser Companies. “We are very excited about the release of our first Sales Professional class through Rio Salado College.” The sales professional class is offered at an introductory rate of $595, with special rates available for employee groups. The non-credit class also includes a one-year subscription to Selling Power magazine.

The second-place winner receives a $500 scholarship to Rio Salado College. The public is encouraged to nominate themselves or someone they feel who deserves to win.
Recently, Maria Pina and Maria Dena were honored by Latino Vibe’s Pedro’s Playground.
Maria Pina
I believe that I, along with everyone who submits an entry, deserve this scholarship. We want to start or continue our education to better ourselves. When I finished high school in 2000, I was 19 and a teen mother. I remember one of my teachers telling me at graduation that I need to go to college. I let life get in the way, but I think the teacher’s words still ring true. Today, I am 27 and have not started my college education. I heard someone say “excuses are fragmented lies.” I have no excuse. I would love the opportunity to go to school and jump start my college education.

Time has passed me by so quickly since I last attended school. I am a certified pharmacy technician, but I still don’t make enough money to support my two beautiful daughters. My goal is to become a registered nurse before my 9-year-old finishes elementary school so I can provide a better future for both my daughters. This scholarship will allow me the opportunity to continue my education and achieve my goal.

ART Teacher’s “Baggage” Makes New York Debut Unlike most people, Sue Norton-Scott’s baggage is a good thing. The Rio Salado College art instructor’s “Baggage” is an original art piece about immigration that was recently on display at the Pen and Brush gallery in New York City. “The piece explores crossing immigration boundaries, with clear references to Mexico, water, and what we take with us when entering new territory,” said Norton-Scott.
We are proud to be one of the

“Baggage” was accepted into an exhibition called “In the News,” which was judged by CBS News/60 Minutes correspondent Morley Safer. Norton-Scott’s art pieces begin as oil paintings, but are categorized as surrealistic mixed media because she expands and extends her canvas.
“I am passionate about helping people express their ideas,” said Norton-Scott. “I get a kick out of seeing someone having an ‘aha’ moment because one positive spark is quite contagious.” These days, Norton-Scott finds that humanities courses are quite popular. “Especially in this economy, people need meaningful enrichment and they appreciate the arts more than ever,” she said. “Most of my students are taking online classes to enhance their skills for a new job or to earn a college degree.” The self-proclaimed “guide on the side” enjoys bringing her first-hand knowledge into the classroom.
Viewers can expect to find unusual objects sewn into, popping out of, and hiding behind Norton-Scott’s artworks.
“I can express an artist’s point of view when students ask questions about the creative process, the current market, or contemporary art,” said Norton-Scott. “Because of my personal experience with these issues, I can explain the artistic, physical and intellectual processes in detail.”
“More important than the media is the message,” said Norton-Scott. “Rather than conveying a point of view, my pieces ask viewers to think differently about an issue and ask new questions about a contemporary topic.”
Norton-Scott has displayed her work in Chicago and Sacramento, as well as the Mesa Arts Center. The Pen and Brush Gallery in New York City will feature another one of her works in a new show beginning April 2010.
Norton-Scott teaches Introduction to Art, Survey of Music History and Contemporary Cinema at Rio Salado.
