Reaching

New Horizons & Beginnings By Mira Radovich

Rio Salado College wants to help all our current and future students realize their full potential. That is why we offer a full range of educational programs and services tailored to student success.

Here are a few examples of the programs we offer:

The New York Times Knowledge Network has joined Rio Salado College’s postbaccalaureate Teacher Preparation Program. The online program is designed for those who have a bachelor’s degree and are seeking teacher certification in elementary, secondary or special education. This new collaboration provides access to The Times content repository and the opportunity to network with other students across the nation.

IBEST

Arizona Integrated Basic Education Skills Training (IBEST), teaches students basic electrical fundamentals such as blueprints, codes and safety. The program is offered free of charge to students age 16 and older who do not have a high school diploma. The IBEST program runs for six months. Classes are held Monday through Friday from either 1-4 p.m. or 5-8 p.m.

RioPASS – An accelerated 2-year associate degree track for students who have a high school diploma or GED. The program is offered as an online cohort. Students take two classes at a time, and many assignments count for credit in both classes.

Continual Improvement Rio Salado is constantly reviewing our program offerings to ensure we provide our students with high-quality educational options to meet their professional needs. For example, this semester we offer new certificates in early childhood and family education and language studies.

Rio Salado continually looks for ways to better serve students. We recently moved our Paradise Valley Mall location to a new facility at 1715 W. Northern Avenue in Phoenix. The new facility features a testing center, computer lab, ABE classes and WestMEC’s clinical dental assisting program. We also want to help high school students get a head start on their college careers through dual and concurrent enrollment programs. Once students are enrolled at Rio Salado, we take steps to ensure academic success. An innovative program, RioPACE, analyzes a student’s online behaviors to predict with 70% accuracy those students who are at high risk of not being successful in a course. The course instructors can then intervene, which ultimately promotes student success in online learning. These are just a few of the many programs and initiatives that Rio Salado believes will lead our students to new educational horizons.

Predictive Research Improves

Student Success By Patricia Moore

Frequent web users will notice when sites like Pandora, Netflix and Amazon make recommendations and offer product suggestions. And many times, the suggestions are surprisingly relevant. That is because web sites are using data collection and analysis to predict the types of music and movies a user might enjoy.

In addition to supporting individual students, the pilot program is also being used in course design.

Now, Rio Salado College is using similar technology in the RioPACE pilot program to increase completion and success rates in the school’s online courses.

For example, brief introductory assignments require students to log in early, and smaller and more frequent assignments encourage habitual site engagement.

“The program makes predictions based on student habits in a course, such as site engagement and pace,” said Shannon Corona, Rio Salado physical science faculty chair. “This is then compared to historical data against other students.”

“We determined the factors that contribute to success in an online course and made changes to encourage these behaviors,” Felix said.

Angela Felix, Rio Salado languages faculty chair, said that courses used in the pilot program promoted the actions modeled by successful students.

Using methods similar to those employed by consumer web sites, data is gathered and analyzed without a noticeable impact on the user experience. Rio Salado is one of six institutions participating in the collaborative Predictive Analytics Reporting (PAR) Framework project. PAR is funded through a $1 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The program will pool anonymous data collected from participating colleges to create a more accurate model of successful behavior.

Corona said RioPACE allows instructors to predict with 70% accuracy those students who are at risk to not be successful in a course, and helps them take steps to intervene. “The program provides instructors with an additional tool to aid students,” Corona said. “Traditional techniques only look at a student’s grade. An instructor now has both tools, the student’s grade and their site engagement.”

READING as an Act of Love By Heidi Capriotti, Sun Sounds of Arizona Marketing Coordinator

Frank Williams’ love of reading was cemented at a young age. Late in the evenings, after he’d gone to bed, he would listen through the walls of his boyhood home as his father read aloud to Frank’s mother. “I’ve come to see that as a tremendous act of love - to read aloud to someone,” Williams said. Today Williams, a Tempe resident, shares that act of love with thousands of Arizonans statewide, who hear him read aloud each week at Sun Sounds of Arizona, a reading service for people who cannot use print. Last May, Williams received the Gold Mic Award, given to the Sun Sounds Volunteer of the Year for outstanding service. He accepted the award in his typical passionate yet humble style. “I’m embarrassed to receive praise for doing what I feel is reward enough in itself,” Williams said.

4

U @ Rio Salado Magazine / Summer/Fall 2011 / uatrio.com

Williams began his volunteer work at Sun Sounds in 2008, reading the Arizona Republic live each week, and pre-recording other magazine programs. In three years he has recorded more than 10 novels for the nightly book programs “A Good Book” and “Bookworld.” He also serves as an ambassador at monthly speaking engagements, educating the public and potential listeners about the service. Williams cites an incident of temporary blindness as a young adult which solidified for him the importance of reading. As a Green Beret stationed in Okinawa, he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage which resulted in spending a week in a darkened room, unable to see. “I was most scared by the fact that I wouldn’t be able to read, something I’d cherished all my life,” he said. Once his vision returned he promised that sharing the gift of reading would be part of his life’s work.

“Reading to those who cannot is an act of love, mercy, and kindness – ‘holy work’ that I am deeply honored to share with the volunteers of Sun Sounds,” Williams said. Sun Sounds of Arizona salutes Williams and the 200 volunteers who give more than 22,000 hours annually to provide access to information for print-disabled people. A service of Rio Salado College, Sun Sounds of Arizona broadcasts from the Tempe campus, as well as from affiliates in Flagstaff, Tucson and Yuma. More than 49,000 people in Arizona hear six daily local and national newspapers, nearly 200 magazines, books, circulars and newsletters read aloud over radio, cable systems, telephone and the Internet. CHANGE

is Good for Your Career

By Delynn Bodine

Can people really find happiness and a sense of fulfillment in their career? According to Jacque Beale they can. “When people discover what fits their personality and interests and then prepare themselves for a career in those areas, they can find a high level of satisfaction,” said Beale, career counselor for the Career Center at Rio Salado College. Over the past few years, Beale has seen an increase of students accessing the Career Center. Many have experienced cut backs and layoffs and are looking to re-career. “Students often come in feeling very, very low, even distressed,” Beale said. “They are undecided about what direction to go. Sometimes it helps them to dig deep for the passion to change their lives. To identify what they really will need to make them happy at this point in their life.”

Tempe resident Tim Henning was seeking a career change when he moved here from California to be closer to his aging father. He had previously worked for a non-profit ministry and is planning to enroll in Rio Salado College’s Teacher Preparation Program. “I wanted to have a career with meaning and value,” said Henning. “One that would be a contribution to the community and that I could derive personal satisfaction from.” Students can access career and personality assessments through the Career Center. If needed, a counselor can then meet with them to evaluate the results. Once possible careers have been identified, students are directed to online resources where they can research current job outlooks. “Jacque helped me solidify my desire to become a teacher. Listening to her, I came to believe that it really is possible,” said Henning. “She became my advocate and negoti-

ated several roadblocks which helped me continue on with my education.” Rio student Elizabeth Farnell also accessed the resources of the Career Center. She had worked for 20 years as a registered nurse and then a massage therapist. She is seeking a degree in chemical dependency and wants to be a counselor. “I felt a need to move in a new direction in my life,” said Farnell. “This career incorporates all my past experience. It’s a good fit.” Beale gains satisfaction when she sees that students understand what the possibilities are and what their potential for the future is. She tells students, “You’ve made it this far. You can succeed.” Students can access Rio’s Career Center resources in person, online or by phone. More information can be found at www.riosalado.edu/counseling.

Rio Partners in

National Online Teacher Prep Program By Delynn Bodine

Rio Salado College, part of the Maricopa Community College District, and The New York Times Knowledge Network have joined together to provide an online post-baccalaureate teacher preparation program. This program is designed for those who have a bachelor’s degree and are seeking teacher certification in elementary, secondary or special education.

“Rio Salado College and The New York Times Knowledge Network are both innovators in higher education,” said Dr. Chris Bustamante, president of Rio Salado College. “It is an exciting opportunity to work together to offer students the advantage of Rio Salado’s proven teacher preparation program and the Knowledge Network’s depth of content resources.”

The online course delivery system offers flexibility for working adults. It also provides opportunity for residents in rural communities with limited educational resources. Enrollment options include 48 start dates throughout the year, which is an added benefit for students who may be changing careers.

“By weaving online course content together with ‘real world’ application, teacher preparation students are very prepared to enter their own classrooms upon program completion,” said Janet Johnson, faculty chair of education for Rio Salado College.

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, demand for qualified teachers is expected to increase nearly 12 percent over the next five to six years with an even higher need for math, science and bilingual teachers.

More information about the program can be found at discoverteaching.net.

Initial outreach efforts will be piloted in Arizona with plans to expand to the national market.

The courses are taught by Rio Salado faculty and students can network with online classmates across the nation.

Student Graduates College Before High School By Delynn Bodine

Rio Salado’s Dual Enrollment program enables students to receive high school and college credit at the same time. Graduating from college before high school wasn’t exactly part of Anngela Adams’ plan, at least not at first. In May she received her Associate of Arts degree from Rio Salado College three weeks before graduating as a valedictorian from Mountain Pointe High School. The summer before Anngela’s freshman year, she took algebra and German courses from Rio Salado College in order to take advanced high school classes and free up her schedule. She then took advantage of Rio Salado’s Dual Enrollment program which enables students to receive high school and college credit at the same time. “I’m just a driven person,” said Anngela. “Why not get classes out of the way? It made a lot of sense to be earning college credit while going to high school.” Anngela brought home information about Dual Enrollment while still in middle school. Her parents were supportive of the concept.

10

U @ Rio Salado Magazine / Summer/Fall 2011 / uatrio.com

“We thought that with college tuition prices going up that this would be a good idea,” said Christa Adams, Anngela’s mother. “She was going to have to master these upper level classes such as calculus, so why not just get serious about it.” Anngela also banked college credits through participation in Concurrent Enrollment during the summer. In her senior year, she discovered that she was just two courses short of an associate degree. She decided that even with a busy schedule, if she gave some extra effort and managed her time wisely she could do it. “Being dual enrolled helped Anngela to focus and gave her the incentive to work harder,” said Christa. Anngela has plans to attend ASU this fall and has already taken the majority of her required general education classes which will free her up to concentrate on her major in biomedical engineering.

“I want to be a doctor and I have a lot of school ahead of me. Dual Enrollment really helped me get a head start on my education,” said Anngela. For more than 24 years Rio Salado College has provided a Dual Enrollment program. During the recent 2010-11 academic year, 53 high schools partnered with Rio Salado College to serve nearly 8,500 students across the Valley. “I would strongly recommend Dual Enrollment to others,” said Christa. “Students have to take some initiative and meet the deadlines. With follow-up and hard work, they can succeed.” For more information about Dual Enrollment visit www.riosalado.edu/earlycollege.

education, Degree Lead Student to a new Life By Mira Radovich

Catherine

Hendrickson celebrated at Rio Salado College’s graduation in May along with hundreds of other students. She worked hard the last few years as a full-time student, even making the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. She earned an Associate in Applied Science in Chemical Dependency, and yet, that was only half the battle.

However, incarceration may have led Hendrickson on the road to a better life. “I did not want prison to be an end, but a new beginning,” Hendrickson said. “I began my journey by enrolling in computer technology classes held at the prison, through Rio Salado College. To my amazement, I completed my first class with an A. That was all it took.”

“I was sentenced to prison, and used it as an opportunity to change my life,” said Hendrickson, detailing the adversity she has had to overcome to reach her educational goals.

Hendrickson set about taking all the classes toward a computer technology degree. But yet she found something was missing.

Hendrickson lost her parents at an early age, and had a turbulent upbringing – at one point she was forced to live on the streets which eventually led to her incarceration.

“I came to realize that the motivation behind this field of study was financial security,” said Hendrickson. “I knew that if prison was truly a new beginning, I needed to make the right choice and follow the passion of my heart.”

“I was driven to make terrible choices in my past, which in turn led to the consequences of criminal activity,” Hendrickson said.

Hendrickson changed her major to chemical dependency, and has never looked back. “I was released from prison a year ago, and clung to my graduation goal with fervor,” Hendrickson said.

14

U @ Rio Salado Magazine / Summer/Fall 2011 / uatrio.com

She credits Rio Salado’s online instructors, her family, friends, pastor, and her own determination for her success.

“…follow the

Passion of

My heart”

“I have finally become the person I was created to be,” Hendrickson said. “My life now is about giving back to others. If I can even help one person, then I will have touched the lives of countless others throughout the community.” In the future, Hendrickson hopes to work with incarcerated women, to help them overcome the obstacles associated with drug addiction. She has been accepted into a bachelor’s degree program in counseling, and hopes to ultimately earn a doctorate in behavioral health.

ation speaker Jordan looks toward the future, he is certain that even when the odds are stacked against him, he is in control of his own fate. “Getting my GED has made me feel like I can start all over again. I have gotten a second chance,” said Jordan. “It has helped me learn what it takes to have a career and made me realize that I love education and will continue on to college.” Jordan was 29 when he re-entered the classroom and discovered that returning as an adult student wasn’t easy. “When I started at Rio, I can’t tell you that I was confident because the fact is, I wasn’t,” Jordan said. He went on to explain that through the support of his grandparents, the examples of strength and perseverance set by his mother, and the miracle of his daughter’s birth, he was able to overcome his fears. “There was a time when I wasn’t concerned about doing the right thing,” Jordan said. “I thank my grandparents and my mom for helping me get my GED and getting my life turned around. They never gave up on me doing the right thing.”

Keith said she is proud of Jordan for the positive example he has been to his family. “It means everything to us,” Keith said, “By doing this he’s an example to his cousins. He has inspired them to go back to college.”

Jordan said he found the Adult ACE course, “Strategies for College Success” to be essential. “I believe every student in the nation should be required to take this course,” he said. “This course teaches you how you can be a more positive and more successful you by taking advantage of your inner creator and overcoming your inner victim.”

Jordan is currently seeking partial custody of his 6-year-old daughter and believes that continuing his education will help him secure a stable life for them both. “She’s my biggest motivation,” Jordan said. “I want to do everything in my power to make sure I have my ducks in a row and can prove that I am worthy of having my daughter in my life.”

Jordan is studying to begin his career as a pharmacy technician and plans to continue his education and eventually become a pharmacist.

“The

Jordan’s grandmother, Arianna Keith, has encouraged Jordan to keep pushing forward. “The sky is the limit,” she reminds him. “Let’s not look back, let’s look forward.”

While Jordan was working toward his GED, he also took courses through the Adult ACE program. Adult ACE, which stands for Adults Achieving a College Education, is a scholarship-based college preparation program. It offers at-risk, financially disadvantaged and first-generation students an opportunity to complete their GED and transition to higher education.

KJZZ Listeners

Help Shape the News By Annette Flores, KJZZ Public Relations Coordinator

G

ot a great idea for an interesting news story? Share it! Listeners of the Valley’s public radio station, KJZZ 91.5, can now help shape the news by sharing stories and sources with Nick Blumberg, the newest addition to KJZZ’s “Fronteras: Changing America Desk.”

The network already has 100,000 sources who have contributed to national shows such as “Marketplace,” “American RadioWorks” and KJZZ’s “Fronteras: Changing America Desk.”

Blumberg will collect listener tips, resources, expert analysis and personal stories, and add them to a national database created by American Public Media’s Public Insight Network. The database allows public radio reporters, producers and editors across the country to find and share news resources.

“We need the help of our listeners, to be our eyes and ears, to help us shed light and insight on stories that aren’t being told,” Paluzzi said.

“Journalists aren’t much without an audience, and this new project provides KJZZ listeners and reporters an opportunity to connect in new ways,” said Blumberg. “This gives listeners a chance to lead reporters to stories and sources that have been overlooked or out of reach.”

KJZZ General Manager Jim Paluzzi realizes the importance of listener contributions.

KJZZ Associate General Manager Mark Moran agrees. “If you think about it, we’re all experts in something or another,” Moran said. “More importantly, we’re living in an age where people are clamoring to be heard, which is why I think you’re seeing a huge spike in social media. This new initiative gives our community a voice, a means of sharing information and news about issues that are important to them.” If you have an untold story or resource to share, please visit the “Fronteras: Changing America Desk” web page at fronterasdesk.org/publicinsight or contact Nick Blumberg at nblumberg@rioradio.org, 480-774-8231.

KJZZ is a listener-supported public broadcasting station licensed to the Maricopa Community College District, and a community service of Rio Salado College’s Division of Public Service. Scan with your smartphone to learn more about Rio’s Division of Public Service
