“RIPON PROVIDES SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO ... TO EXPLORE ANY INTERESTS YOU MAY HAVE OUTSIDE OF A GENERAL MAJOR.”

“I have such a sense of belonging on campus. My relationships with my professors are really good. They are always understanding about any issues you may have as long as you are willing to speak with them. They are easy to approach because they want you to speak with them.”

IT’S HARD NOT TO BE INVOLVED. “I LIKE THAT THERE ARE SO MANY ACTIVITIES AND SO MANY JOB OPPORTUNITIES. BEING INVOLVED BUILDS CONNECTIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PEOPLE.”

“I’m a member of several multicultural clubs, have on-campus jobs as a baker’s assistant and in the Student Activities Office, and I am a member of the orientation committee. I am looking at joining the pre-med club and doing ride-alongs with the City of Ripon paramedics. I make connections with everyone and really have a sense of belonging on campus.”

JORDAN STIEDE

#BALLER, #STRAIGHT-A-STUDENT, #PRE-MED “I have a 4.0 grade point average, and it means a lot to me. When I’m not playing basketball, I’m studying and getting everything done. I have such a great connection with the professors. If I have a question about anything, I can go right to their office and ask them for help. It’s such a great advantage for Ripon College students. At larger schools, you don’t have the same opportunities to have those really close relationships with the professors.”

14

JORDAN AND OTHER MEMBERS OF THE MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM VOLUNTEERED THEIR TIME TO HELP SPRUCE UP THE APARTMENT OF A LOCAL ELDERLY WOMAN WITH FRESH PAINT AND NEW FURNITURE.

#PSYCHOBIOLOGY #SPANISH

JORDAN WAS SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN PRESIDENT MESSITTE’S “PRESIDENTIAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM,” A GROUP OF 32 STUDENTS WHO, AMONG OTHER THINGS, MEET MONTHLY WITH THE PRESIDENT TO DISCUSS A SELECTED BOOK AND OTHER SOCIETAL ISSUES.

IN TWO SEASONS WITH THE RED HAWKS BASKETBALL TEAM, JORDAN HAS PLAYED IN 46 GAMES (SHOOTING 40 PERCENT FROM THE FIELD AND 93 PERCENT FROM THE FOUL LINE) AND EARNED ACADEMIC ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS.

“AT OTHER COLLEGES, I’M NOT SURE I WOULD FEEL AS WELL-ROUNDED AS I DO AT RIPON. THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT THINGS I CAN DO HERE.”

JORDAN’S FAVORITE ATHLETE: QUARTERBACK AARON RODGERS

“RIPON’S ACCEPTANCE RATE INTO GRADUATE SCHOOL IS REALLY HIGH, AND I’M LOOKING AT THE BIG PICTURE. I WANT TO GO TO GRADUATE SCHOOL.”

CLINTON “CJ” GLOVER

#ACTIVIST, #VOICE, #TUTOR

“I LIKE THE ENVIRONMENT AT RIPON — HOW THE CAMPUS LOOKS. THERE ARE A LOT OF TREES, AND IT IS A LOT CALMER THAN THE CITY,” SAYS CLINTON, WHO COMES FROM CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.

RIPON IS A SMALL-SCALE REAL WORLD. “RIPON HAS HELPED ME BECOME LESS IGNORANT ABOUT WHAT GOES ON IN THE WORLD.”

CLINTON’S FAVORITE MOVIE: FOUR BROTHERS

18

“Business is more of a general study because it allows you access to a lot of backup plans. It gives me a different approach to being a lawyer, which is what I aim to be. At Ripon, I like the fact that we’re encouraged to take elective courses outside of our major. It helps you spread your knowledge out. There’s always more than one component to the story. “My professors know I try to relate all my classwork to the real word. They work with me on that. Plus, I can joke with them if necessary, and I appreciate that aspect of our relationships.”

#BUSINESS_MANAGEMENT CLINTON TUTORS FELLOW STUDENTS IN BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS COURSEWORK. CLINTON HAS SERVED THE BLACK STUDENT UNION IN JUST ABOUT EVERY CAPACITY. HE HAS BEEN TREASURER, HISTORIAN, SERGEANT AT ARMS AND VICE PRESIDENT AND IS NOW SERVING AS PRESIDENT. HE IS ALSO A MEMBER OF THE PRE-LAW SOCIETY, LA UNIDA AND RIPON COLLEGE FEMINISTS. SUCH INVOLVEMENT OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM, SAYS CLINTON, IS A NECESSARY PART OF LEARNING. “IT HELPS CREATE YOUR CHARACTER. IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT THE BOOKS. YOU NEED THOSE SOCIAL SKILLS,” HE SAYS.

RIPON COLLEGE PROMOTED A #RESPECTFULDIFFERENCE SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN IN NOVEMBER TO SPARK CONVERSATIONS ABOUT THE NEED FOR RESPECT AND APPRECIATION OF DIFFERENT CULTURES, RELIGIONS, RACES AND VIEWPOINTS. CLINTON BELIEVES THE WORLD CAN FUNCTION PROPERLY ONLY IF WE RESPECT THE DIFFERENCES OF OTHERS.

19

#PSYCHOLOGY

“I want to go into psychiatric social work and would like to work with children with disabilities. I am considering a self-designed double major in disability studies because that’s the population I want to work with. I’ve always had an interest in social justice work because of my interest in psychology and understanding people. It seems natural to me to try to better society and make the campus more inclusive in whatever ways I can.

#SELF-DESIGNED DIABILITY STUDIES

“A lot of people want to learn more about inclusivity. They seem to appreciate the work that we do so they are able to learn more and grow in their understanding.”

RACHEL STANLEY

#ABLE, #INCLUSIVE, #PASSIONATE

“THE VARIETY OF CLASSES AVAILABLE AND THE QUALITY OF THEM HAS BEEN REALLY COOL. I ALWAYS FEEL LIKE I’M LEARNING THINGS, AND CLASSES ARE TAUGHT IN A WAY THAT I UNDERSTAND AND FIND USEFUL.”

PROFESSORS HAVE HIGH EXPECTATIONS. “BUT THEY ARE NOT IMPOSSIBLE TO REACH. IT’S THE RIGHT LEVEL OF CHALLENGE.”

20

“I ALWAYS FEEL CONNECTED AT RIPON. THE TEACHERS ARE ALWAYS INVOLVED, AND YOU GET TO REALLY KNOW THEM. IT’S NOT JUST SITTING IN ON LECTURES.”

RACHEL’S FAVORITE BOOK: THE LITTLE PRINCE BY ANTOINE DE SAINT-EXUPÉRY

RACHEL HAS DYSAUTONOMIA, A NERVOUS SYSTEM DISORDER THAT AFFECTS HER HEART RATE AND BLOOD PRESSURE, RESULTING IN CHRONIC FATIGUE. SHE USES A WHEELCHAIR TO ALLEVIATE THOSE SYMPTOMS. “I ALSO HAVE SOME SENSORY PROCESSING DIFFICULTIES AND CAN’T HANDLE A LOT OF SOUNDS ALL AT ONCE. IT’S BEEN NICE TO BE SOMEWHERE THAT’S GENERALLY QUIET AND NOT BIG AND LOUD ALL THE TIME,” SHE SAYS.

Rachel’s advice to prospective students: “Try and find out what your passion is and how you can work that into your experience at Ripon. I feel like there is a place for most everyone’s passions here. There’s so much going on. Put a little time into finding your place, and you’ll do very well here.”

21

“I can think back to a time with my psychology professor who was kind enough to meet me during break at a coffee shop and help me out with a paper. I thought it was amazing. I told some of my friends back home about it, and they just couldn’t believe it. “It’s real and it’s true: professors at Ripon do tend to care more about your academic well-being. The quality of the professors here at Ripon is one of the reasons I came from California and one of the reasons why I stay.”

I LOVE WAKING UP TO THE COLORS OF FALL. “I CAN SKIP TO CLASS IN LESS THAN FIVE MINUTES, OFTEN WITH A HARMONICA AND A CUP OF STARBUCKS IN MY HANDS.”

“The L.A. that I grew up in and the L.A. that I am in now is a lot different from what a lot of people perceive L.A. to be. One of the reasons I decided to go to Ripon is because Ripon offered me this monastery, this safe place for me to go to. “There’s a quiet that you don’t get here in the city that allows for more creative thinking.”

22

THOUGH JORGE IS FROM LOS ANGELES, IT WAS A RIPON COLLEGE TRIP TO THE UNITED STATES HISPANIC LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE IN CHICAGO THAT ALLOWED HIM TO MEET FORMER L.A. MAYOR ANTONIO VILLARAIGOSA. IN ADDITION TO BEING A MEMBER OF LA UNIDA, RIPON’S HISPANIC STUDENT ORGANIZATION, JORGE IS ACTIVE FORMING A COALITION AMONG THE VARIOUS CULTURAL GROUPS ON CAMPUS. “THE LEVEL OF PERSISTENT CARE RIPON PROFESSORS GIVE THEIR STUDENTS IS UNHEARD OF AT OTHER INSTITUTIONS, AND THAT MAKES ME PROUD TO BE A RIPON STUDENT.”

FOR ME, THAT FREEDOM COMES WITH MUSIC AND ART. I DIDN’T THINK THAT I WAS GOING TO GET THE CHANCE TO DO ART AND MUSIC WHILE STUDYING FOR THE CAREER THAT I WANTED. THAT’S SOMETHING THAT’S REALLY POSSIBLE AT RIPON.”

I LOVE MY PROFESSORS. “I WOULD NOT BE CHALLENGING MYSELF AND EXCEEDING MY OWN EXPECTATIONS WITHOUT THEM. EVERY SINGLE PROFESSOR IS SO EASY TO TALK TO.”

RACHEL’S CELEBRITY CRUSH: JENNIFER ANISTON (LOL )

24

“My professors honestly care about me and my successes. I can easily talk to them and ask for recommendations and suggestions. I asked a professor about a friend of mine, James, who went to Ripon about 10 years ago. The professor began talking about James as if he had just taught him yesterday. That’s awesome.”

“I HAVE A PASSION FOR ANIMALS — SPECIFICALLY DOGS. THEY ARE SUCH LOVING AND SMART CREATURES. EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE A DOG!”

“Ripon creates tight bonds between the students and also between the students and the professors. Recently, I had a long conversation late on a Friday with a student about current events and issues. We both got a lot out of it. Professors are really enriched by those connections, too.”

“RIPON HAS AN ENVIRONMENT THAT CULTIVATES

INTELLECTUAL CURIOUSITY. THERE’S A CONSTANT CONVERSATION HAPPENING ABOUT BIG IDEAS — RACISM, POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS, THE ETHICS OF USING ANIMALS FOR MEDICAL EXPERIMENTS.”

“I teach Sociology of the Paranormal. There is a lot of buzz about this class. It is a pop culture trend right now — television shows and movies related to the paranormal such as ghosts, zombies, vampires. Many students are keyed in to thinking about this stuff, but it’s still stigmatizing to discuss belief. This class provides a safe place to explore these things.”

“I like the idea of a conversation with broader cultural concerns, whether it’s the time period in which the text was written or our current period. I try to really capture the idea of conversation in a multi-dimensional way.”

“NONE OF MY CLASSES ARE LECTURE CLASSES. WE’RE GOING TO SIT IN A CIRCLE AND TALK A WHOLE LOT. I WANT TO HEAR EVERYONE’S VOICE.”

“At Ripon, I can watch the students grow and have good conversations with them. I can say, ‘I see how hard you’ve worked on this paper because I know where you were a year ago.’ I can talk with them about growth. I feel that makes me a stronger teacher and better able to help them become the best students they can be when I am following them for four years and they’re in and out of my office for four years.”

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH At Ripon College, students produce their own research with faculty guidance. It’s one of the advantages of attending a college where your professors work alongside you and are dedicated to getting you ready for life beyond the undergraduate experience.

LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE Leadership is a hallmark of the Ripon College experience. It begins in the classroom with the personalized attention you will receive from faculty and permeates throughout campus life.

CENTER FOR POLITICS AND THE PEOPLE Our new Center for Politics and the People provides opportunities for students to engage with public servants, political candidates and leading prognosticators. Students oftentimes play

CENTER FOR DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION Ripon College seeks unity amongst its students, faculty and staff through building relationships with its members, regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation and nationality. The Center for Diversity and Inclusion offers a dedicated space where saliency in one’s identity will always be respected and where students may find community building and congregation with peers of like or shared experience. Innovative programming and a variety of resources provide regular opportunities for cross-cultural dialogue.

GREEK LIFE At Ripon, students participating in sororities and fraternities live in residence halls, not houses. They are leaders within both the Greek community and greater campus life. Greek students develop and serve in community service projects, including Girl Scouts of America (Kappa Delta),

ATHLETICS Division III student-athletes, like ours at Ripon, have the highest graduation rates of the NCAA’s three divisions, and they regularly outpace non-athletes in the completion of degrees. Ripon believes athletics are an integral part of our students’ educational experience. That is why athletics at Ripon are referred to as co-curricular — not extracurricular — activities.

SOME OF OUR FAVORITE PLACES TO HANG OUT ...

Grab coffee at “We Proudly Serve Starbucks” inside the Pickard Commons or downtown at Mugs Coffeehouse. Hungry? Find great pizza and other goodies at Roadhouse, J’s BBQ and Knuth Brewing Co. Need to burn off those calories? Try the Bovay Fitness Center or the weightroom inside J.M. Storzer Center. Catch a movie at Campus Cinema, the historic, first Marcus Theatre. Marcus has made plenty of upgrades to this single screen theatre. First-run flicks are common, and all cost just $5. Want to reconnect with Mother Nature? Take a hike or hit the mountain bike trail in the Ceresco Prairie Conservancy. Have some studying to do? Popular places to chill with your books include the Joyce Lounge and the Office of Student Activities in Pickard Commons; the Center for Diversity and Inclusion in the lower level of Bartlett Hall; or Lane Library. Just need to hang out with friends? Grab a bite and play pool in the Pub in Harwood Memorial Union or sit outside the Bovay Terrace and enjoy the view. Both venues regularly feature live music and other entertainment. Speaking of entertainment ... the C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts is constantly abuzz with student music ensembles and drama productions. Plus, critically acclaimed musicians and artists regularly visit for free performances and exhibits. If you’re feeling creative, the art studios in C.J. Rodman Center are great places to express yourself; and you can share your artwork in several locations downtown. Need to find a gift for someone special, maybe even yourself? Ripon Drug, Dear Prudence, Fox River Glove, Watson Street Tea & Treats and Soirree Urban Gifts are just a few of the unique shops within walking distance of campus, and don’t forget the Ripon College Bookstore. It’s your first stop for Ripon and Red Hawks apparel and gifts.
