SHOFAR KRAKOW, Call of Return Krakow is an historic and cultural crossroads. Once the political capital of Poland, it has been the site of its most important University for centuries. The Jewish Quarter of Kazimierz was not destroyed when its 68,000 inhabitants were moved to a Ghetto before elimination. In shambles and abandoned after the fall of the Soviet Union, the keys were turned over to Jewish institutions. Here the events of Schindler’s List took place, dramatized and by Steven Spielberg’s film. Old Synagogues watch tourist carts zip through centuries filled with the ghosts of Jewish merchants, musicians, Rabbis, thinkers and students. A Jewish Culture Festival is attended by upwards of 40,000...the great ma jority Poles. Krakow is the nearest ma jor city to Auschwitz. In the midst of Kazimierz stands a new institution, the Jewish Community Centre of Kraków, where Jews, many newly self-discovered, find a place to gather, to heal, to learn, to find themselves emotionally and physically. Beyond its walls, a message goes out from the JCC of renewal, as over 10,000 visitors from around the world find their way monthly. What better symbol of the Call to Return than the the Shofar which makes a cry of both remembrance and the future? SHOFAR KRAKÓW stands at number 24 Miodowa Street in a courtyard formed by the JCC and the eastern Bima wall of the old Tempel Synagogue…in Kazimierz. A low wall with an open gate separates this semi-private space from the street. When a traditional shofar is blown through the resonant SHOFAR KRAKÓW, the sound can be heard far outside the gates. To commemorate the dedication of SHOFAR KRAKÓW, Call to Return on Sept. 6, 2015, a photo contest was held and an exhibit staged at the Jewish Community Center. This book reproduces the finalist images. - Richard Edelman
