Learn how to “read a city” with architectural historian John Tschirch in a trio of courses including A Tale of Three Cities, Mapping Newport, and Mapping Boston (page 17). Develop a personal design philosophy and identity system in Exploring Your Professional Identity Through Mapping (page 18). Or step outside the bounds of traditional printmaking and into the experimental in Printmaking Studio: Collagraphy + the Built Print (page 10). FOUNDATION Foundational skills in observational drawing, design and color develop the ability to understand and practice ideation and creative problem solving, and to absorb fundamental design principles such as composition and the use of color, line, shape, form, value, texture and spatial relationships. Successful careers in architecture, apparel, product design and digital media can be accelerated by understanding these concepts just as they would for a fine art painter, sculptor or jeweler. In addition to Applied Color (below, offered each semester), RISD|CE Foundation courses include Drawing I, Design, and Digital Design Techniques (offered in Fall and Spring).

The Japanese have a unique tradition of producing beautiful paper, books and boxes. Explore these traditional approaches to crafting handmade objects in a series of three workshops.
Japanese Bookbinding + Suminagashi

Japanese Papermaking

How to Draw a Flower

This course is a great entry point for prospective woodworkers, as it introduces students to woodworking with a focus on traditional hand tools, including marking and measuring tools, saws, chisels, planes and other edge tools.
Explore how to translate jewelry designs through sketches and models and observe how natural forms are ideal catalysts in the development of unique pieces. You’ll create projects using readily available tools and materials such as paper, wire and everyday materials.

Experience with acrylic paint lays a foundation for learning to work with other paint, such as oil or gouache. Students gain proficiency in color mixing, composition and paint application— essential skills for any painter, illustrator or designer.
With an emphasis on materials and techniques specific to oil painting, this course covers stretching canvas and preparing surfaces for painting supports; paints and paint application; brushes; developing a color palette; and solvents and varnishes.

Mixed Media: Working on Small Panels Chloe Wessner

In this course that combines two tactile printmaking techniques (silkscreen and letterpress), you’ll learn how to hand-set type, how to create and develop imagery, how to prepare screens and how to print letterpress and silkscreen.
This course introduces new and amateur photographers to the art of composing and shooting great pictures. Lesson topics include technical operations like focus, shutter speed and aperture, and how they influence artistic choices.

This course is an introduction to silver printing in a black-and-white darkroom. Lessons include film developing, chemistry and enlarger use; making contact prints and work prints; and final printing in the darkroom.
A follow-up to Adobe Photoshop, this course focuses on advanced image controls for color correction, exposure with contrast adjustment and overall image refinement, and explores the advanced use of selection tools for creating masks, layer masks and paths.

JavaScript enables a web designer to add interactive features to what might otherwise be a static webpage. Students set up a small set of webpages using examples of JavaScript, such as status bar messages, event handlers and image rollovers.
