Majors You’ll build on your foundation courses by choosing a major, which will allow you to explore a field of design or fine art that already interests you, or take the opportunity to try something new. Note that space in majors is limited and placement is on a first-come, firstserved basis. Animation Art + Activism Art + Science Architecture Ceramics

Foundation Courses Your foundation work is as crucial to your artistic development as your major. These three courses ask you to move beyond the expected, take risks, test your theories, challenge your own ideas, and refine (and refine and refine) until you find the best solution. You’ll also develop a new visual vocabulary that will allow you to confidently speak about art and design.

Life at RISD

An essential element of the RISD undergraduate curriculum is the studio critique (or, affectionately, “crit”). That’s why at Pre-College, you’ll learn to present your work to your peers and instructors, receive constructive criticism and analyze your classmates’ work in turn. This type of dialog will help you refine your homework and in-class assignments in order to prepare for finals and end-of-summer exhibitions:

What goes on outside the studio is just as important as inside. Pre-College is oriented toward independent young makers and doers looking for the opportunity to both work and live like a college student in downtown Providence, RI.

Live on campus Many Pre-College students opt to live on campus in the residence halls. Residential Life provides safe, social and inclusive opportunities throughout the program. Live-in professional staff and student resident advisors supervise the residence halls as well as mentor and support you along the way. Commute Live nearby? Many students find that commuting strikes a good balance between college life and support systems at home. You’ll have the same access to academic experiences, on-campus events and weekend trips as residential students. You’re also welcome to visit with residential students and work in the residence hall studios.
