Get ready for 6 weeks of eye-opening, mindbending, thoughtprovoking, imaginationexpanding, lifelong friend-making education that will forever shape how you see art and design, yourself, and the world around you. 6 weeks that will stay with you for the rest of your life. 1

RISD Pre-College isn’t just an education. It’s an experience—one that will whet your appetite for college and give you the space you need to develop solid skills in art and design. For six weeks, you’ll live like a college student in RISD residence halls. You’ll follow a college-level studio curriculum. And you’ll have the freedom to explore all Rhode Island has to offer every weekend—including museums, art galleries and beaches. But that doesn’t mean it’s all clam shacks and suntan oil. Because you’ll also face the same challenges as a RISD college student. That means you’ll need to work hard and remain focused—no matter what else crops up. Not only will you build confidence in yourself as an artist and as an individual, but you’ll: Master a range of tools, materials and techniques. Study with award-winning faculty in our art studios. Forge the kind of friendships that last a lifetime.

3

RISD Pre-College strengthens your ability to observe, analyze, conceptualize and create. You’ll . . . discover how to articulate your responses to the world around you through the visual language of art and design. expose yourself to a range of artistic techniques and media from different disciplines—as well as RISD’s renowned art museum, library and nature lab, and the surrounding city (a work of art in its own right). strengthen your critical thinking skills and kickstart the process of defining who you really are, deep down. meet students from across the country and around the world. Prepare to form strong bonds as you tackle the program together. Many long-term friendships start during Pre-College—which is no surprise given that you’re sharing living and work space, participating in organized activities, and helping each other manage your time and workloads.

Your foundation One of the hallmarks of a RISD undergraduate education is the Experimental and Foundation Studies program, a yearlong immersion in rigorous visual and critical inquiry, designed to encourage you to experiment and challenge ideas. And that’s no different for the Pre-College Program, where you’ll be introduced to the RISD curricular concept through three foundation courses: Drawing Foundations, Design Foundations and Critical Studies in Art. These courses will help you sharpen your powers of observation, gain experience with various tools, materials and techniques, and learn to analyze and discuss works of art. You’ll build upon that foundation by choosing a major, which will allow you to explore a particular field of design or fine art.

Showcase An essential element of the learning process at RISD is the studio critique. As you learn to present and discuss your work in front of others, you’ll grow more comfortable with articulating your artistic goals. Critiques, or “crits,” take place throughout the course of each class, and serve as important guideposts as you refine your work and prepare your final projects. The summer culminates with the annual Pre-College Exhibitions. The Majors Exhibition showcases hundreds of pieces produced in the studios of all 20 majors; the Fashion Majors Show highlights wearable art; the Foundations Exhibition presents work from Drawing Foundations and Design Foundations; and Video Screenings show the work of Film/Video and Animation majors.

14

to learn from other students and swap classroom experiences in a casual and social setting.

Our Residence Life professional staff members work hard to create an extensive residential program that provides safe, social, inclusive and educational opportunities to enhance your overall student experience. Live-in professional staff and student resident advisors assigned to each floor supervise the residence halls, as well as mentor and support PreCollege students. Directions for completing the online campus housing application will be sent via email by the Residence Life Office in May and we encourage you to submit your application as promptly as possible. Rooms will be assigned and confirmed with students in June, prior to the beginning of the Pre-College Program. Any student needing a housing accommodation due to medical need must fill out a request accompanied by a letter from the attending physician. Any student interested in genderinclusive housing options can email Joshua Peipock at jpeipock@risd.edu. If you have questions regarding summer housing that are not covered here or on our website, please contact RISD’s Residence Life Office at housing@risd.edu. COMMUTERS RISD Pre-College welcomes commuting students. You’re invited to participate in all Residence Life activities, as well as weekend events. You’ll also have access to workrooms in the residence halls, whenever residential students have access. DINING SERVICES The Metcalf Dining Center, also known as The Met, features a sandwich station, salad bar, a vegetarian/vegan bar, as well as daily soups and miso station, and traditional entrées. The Portfolio Café, located in the lobby of 15 West, features a continental breakfast for residents.

The RISD Dining Services staff is sensitive to the dietary needs and preferences of a student body representing cultures and religious traditions from all over the world. If you have further questions about dining plans, please contact Dining Services at 401 454-6642. For questions about special dietary needs call 401 454-6362.

Policies PARENTS, PLEASE NOTE: RISD’s Pre-College Program is oriented toward independent young people. The student needs to take initiative both in and outside of the classroom including prioritizing their schedule to accommodate extensive homework assignments. Attendance in all classes (including Finals Critique Week) is required in order to complete the program. If parents and their children are seeking a somewhat sheltered environment, they should consider the nature of this program very carefully before applying. STUDENT CONDUCT RISD Pre-College Program encourages artistic and intellectual freedom, but also offers a structured campus environment. Most students live in RISD residence halls, which are accessible only by authorized ID cards. Special rules apply to Pre-College students, which include but are not limited to evening curfew and the need for parental and/or guardian permission to leave campus overnight.

NOTE: Violations of college policies and regulations may result in such sanctions as a warning, probation or dismissal. All policy materials must be read and acknowledged prior to the start of the program. Further details of conduct expectations, attendance and curfew policies are included in the Student Handbook, which is provided to students after acceptance into the program.
