Our Winter Concert in Review Staff Writer: Arva Bulut

This year RIS performed its Winter Concert in a single theatre, including all grades performing. The main characters featured were the seventh and eighth graders. The idea was that they went on a field trip in which they get lost. The seventh and eighth graders created the order and events that would happen during their Performing Arts classes throughout semester 1.

In case you missed our show, these were the performances in which each grade showed off their talents:

Student Problems Staff Writer: Humayra Sharipova

As students, it is natural that many people have student problems. We students can sometimes be under a lot of stress! I went out into our school to survey and check out what our biggest student problems are these days. Let's see what some hot issues are at RIS and see if we can fix them! If you have an idea for how to help this student problem, please write to student council or a letter to the editor of our newszine!

Problem One: A big concern from grade 5 to 8 students is that our MacBooks have a limited time for us to work, and sometimes the students need extra time to work on their homework. They really need this great technology! They should be able to use it! For grade 2-4 students, our iPads only slide and unlock. No limited time; we can open our iPads whenever we want! Is this fair?

4

Solution One: One idea is that the MacBooks should open at least at 8 a.m. Also, maybe having a "lockout time" isn't a good idea since our MS

students have so much homework. Every day! Is this too much? Any other ideas? Write us! Solution Three: Teachers give Problem Two: The second less homework to our students! biggest problem at RIS for How else can we fix this? If you students is that grades 3-8 cannot have an idea, tell us so that we eat second break snack. As you can spread the news! know, grades 1 and 2 can eat it. **Survey Time** Sometimes they even get muffins I surveyed our teachers and for their second snack and not students about these problems. fruit! Let's hear what people said! Solution Two: One way to solve Ms. Keeney: If students had this is to give grades 3-8 a snack problems, and if they came to me, during second break. It could even be optional for students who I would try to fix them. don't want it! We could also Ms. Alison: Well, I'd just remind change the snack times so that it them that students and teachers isn't right after MS students' are here for you, right? Even if lunch. Again, if you have any it's a problem at school or it's a other ideas, write us. Please! problem at home, we can solve it. Problem Three: Another hot issue in our student body is that middle schoolers have too much homework. Here are few ideas on the subjects of their homework every night: Math, Social Studies, Reader's Workshop, Writer's Workshop, ELA, and Science.

Aleena, G. 7: I would ask the teacher for help, or I would take a little break and do something fun like playing soccer. Humayra: I would take my mind off of it and think of cupcakes. *Contact us: echo@rischool.org

Ask The Echo

I cant keep my self focused while using the computer and doing Homework. That is ok. Most of the students in RIS have the same problem. Even I do. Maybe you can start by closing other windows that are not related to homework, and you can have an adult next to you when you study, so if you do something that is not about homework, he/she can tell you. Also you can record yourself, and if you do something that is not related to your homework and you don’t realise it, then you can see it, and try to fix it.

Staff Writer: Bilgesu Balci

Any time that you're feeling stressed, confused, or troubled, ask The Echo! With our "Dear Echo" section, you'll get great advice in each edition from our wonderful staff writers! I am having trouble remembering to unpack my homework. I think you might want to have a list of things that you need to unpack everyday. Before doing your homework, you can have a list of saying things that you did for homework, and need to take it tomorrow. Also for your homework, you can have a homework notebook, so you know what to do when you are at home. One teacher gives a certain grade more work. If you think that is unfair, you should talk to that teacher and learn why he or she is giving you more work. You can also claim and ask why other grades didn't get it, and your grade got it. If he/she says it is for standards and your learning, then you should just accept it. Life is not fair sometimes. I have a book I really want, but the librarian says no. One day I stole the book, and now the librarian is searching for it. What do I do? Just tell the truth.

Some of my friends are so annoying. They talk a lot! If you are annoyed by your friends, you can ask them why they are talking a lot in a joking way. But remember, you must not hurt their feelings by saying rude things to them directly. Try to ask it in a joking way, but you must make them understand that you are serious by the way of saying words, or with your actions.

I can't sleep at night! I always sleep after 3 or 4 in mid-night! Do you have any advices? I think you must listen to a music that can make you sleep, or read a book before sleeping. You can also watch a movie, and when you are tried, you can go to sleep. If you go to sleep that late because of the chores/homework assignments/grading, then you should have a studying plan, and you must decide what will you do in a time period that will be enough you to finish all your chores/homework assignments/grading.

Girls and boys are always fighting in my classroom. They are always taking sides by boys and girls. That is normal. When they fight, they should discuss why are they fighting, but not in an screaming-or making fun way. They should discuss their problem calmly, and try to solve the problem. As the part when they take each boys and girls side. That is normal too because boys can think like other boys, and girls can think like other girls.
