Fiber-Classic Smooth-Star ®

Both Fiber-Classic® and Smooth-Star® doors can be fitted with glass inserts from multiple decorative, clear and clear Low-E glass options, as well as mini-blinds and built-in screens. Several are Impactrated for increased protection from severe weather. Glass inserts are available in a range of sizes. Options include fan-lites located near the top of doors for optimal privacy, or full-, 3/4and 1/2-lites in the center that allow in the maximum amount of light. You can also choose your glass by privacy level. A rating of 1 means the glass is clear and visitors would easily see through it. A rating of 5 means visitors would only make out shapes and shadows when looking through the glass in the door. The highest rating, 10, refers to glass that would block their view entirely. The privacy rating appears below each glass style. Your glass choice can also be included in sidelites that frame your door or in a transom above the door.

Glass Design Options

Profiles™ steel doors can be fitted with multiple decorative glass insert options. Several are Impactrated for increased protection from severe weather. Profiles™ and Traditions glass inserts are also available in clear and clear Low-E glass, as well as Interior-blinds and Built-in screens. Size options include fan-lites located near the top of doors for optimal privacy, or full-, 3/4- and 1/2-lites in the center that allow in the maximum amount of light. You can also choose your glass by privacy level. A rating of 1 means glass is clear and visitors would easily see through it. A rating of 5 means visitors could only make out shapes and shadows when looking through the door. The highest rating, 10, refers to glass that would block their view entirely. The privacy ratings appear below each glass style. Your glass choice can also be included in sidelites that frame your door or in transoms above the door. Please consult your Therma-Tru® dealer for information on decorative glass options for Traditions steel doors.

Glossary of Terms AIR INFILTRATION: When air passes through a door system. CAMING: Formed metal stripping, made of brass, brushed-nickel or black-nickel plated steel, used between cut-glass pieces in decorative glass. CORE: The center section of a door. DEADBOLT: A latch used to secure a door closed. DOORLITE: A glass panel, fitted to a door in a cut-out hole that creates a door with a glass opening. DOUBLE-GLAZED: Glass outfitted with two panes of glass with a sealed airspace between. ELD: Acronym for external lite dividers. ELDs are often used to create Craftsman style glass dividers. ETCHED GLASS: Glass with a decorative pattern engraved by means of chemical action or mechanical sand-blasting. FIRE-RATED: A door that has been tested to contain the spread of fire from one room to another. Fire doors are rated and labeled in terms of time, e.g., 20-minute or 90-minute. FLUSH-GLAZED: A type of glazed door that has its glass perimeter moldings flush with the face of the surrounding door. FRAME: The perimeter to which the door is hinged and latched.

R-VALUE: A number that describes the ability of a material or assembly to resist the flow or transmittance of heat. The higher the R-value the better the insulation. RAIL: In insulated door panels, the part made of wood or a composite material, which runs inside the assembly, across the top and bottom ends. In stile and rail doors, these are horizontal pieces at top and bottom edges, and at intermediate points, which connect and frame between the stiles. SIDELITE: A fixed narrow panel with glass, installed next to a door panel, for decorative purposes. SILL: The base of a door frame that functions with the door bottom to seal out air and water. STILE: In insulated door panels, the full-length parts, usually wood, which make up the long edges. In stile and rail doors these are, the vertical edge parts. TEMPERED GLASS: Glass that shatters into small pieces without sharp edges when broken. TRANSOM: A framed glass unit mounted above a door. U-VALUE: The measure of heat loss during indirect radiation exposure; such as during the winter months. Lower U-values mean lower heating costs.

GBG: Acronym for grilles between glass. Wood or plastic pieces used to create a patterned, multi-panel look in glass. HINGE: Metal plates with a cylindrical metal pin that fastens to a door edge and door frame to allow the door to swing. IMPACT-RATED: Doors or glass that have been engineered to withstand the force of wind and debris in storms. INSULATED GLASS: Two or more individual panes of glass separated by a specified spacer bar system and then sealed to be air and water tight. INSWING: An exterior entry door that swings into a home or building. JAMB: A vertical perimeter frame part of a door system.

BASIC ANATOMY OF A DOOR

LATCH: A moveable, usually spring-loaded pin or bolt, which is part of a lock mechanism. LITE: An assembly of glass and a surrounding frame.

Glossary

LOCKBLOCK: A rectangular block of wood placed inside a door at the lock side edge, which reinforces the assembly when the lock hardware is installed. LOW-E GLASS: Glass that has been factory coated with a thin layer of material, nearly clear, which acts to absorb and reflect heat and light energy.

OUTSWING: An exterior door assembly in which the door panel swings outside the building.

PANEL: The decorative section of the door that produces deep shadow lines. POLYURETHANE FOAM CORE: Inside the door panel, this rigid or flexible plastic foam provides structural integrity and energy efficiency in door.

SIDELITES

Therma-Tru® Exterior Doors All door slabs shall be manufactured by ThermaTru Corp. The panels shall be secured, using a high-performance adhesive to thermally broken, trimmable stiles and rails forming a perimeter to reduce thermal transmission and allow for field preparation of hardware. The bottom edge shall be manufactured from a moisture-resistant and decay-resistant composite. The core shall be foamed-in-place, polyurethane with a density of 1.9 pcf nominal, k-factor of 0.15 BTU hr-1 ft-2 which shall completely fill the cavity and bond the stiles, rails, faces (glass in flush-glazed sidelites, and various flush-glazed doors) into a unitized panel. Independent Laboratory Performance Testing Therma-Tru® exterior door systems (properly assembled with all genuine Therma-Tru® components) have been tested for one or more of the following performance specifications: structural load, uniform load deflection, vertical load resistance, air infiltration, water penetration resistance, forced entry resistance, operating forces, force to latch, deglazing resistance, operating cycle performance, impact resistance, sound transmission, thermal performance and solar heat gain performance. Therma-Tru® entry and patio door systems conform to multiple Performance Standards/Test Methods that may include ANSI/AAMA/NWWDA 101/I.S.2, AAMA/WDMA 101/I.S.2/NAFS, AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2-A440, ASTM E330, ASTM E547, ASTM E283, ASTM E 331, ANSI/BHMA A156.2, AAMA 1304, AAMA 920, AAMA 925, ASTM E2068, ASTM F842, ASTM E987, ASTM E1300, ASTM E90, ASTM E413, ASTM E1332, ASTM E1886, ASTM E1996, PA/TAS 201, PA/TAS 202, PA/TAS 203, HUD UM89, AAMA 1702.2, 24 CFR 3280, 24 CFR 3282, NFRC 100 AND NFRC 200. Refer to www.thermatru.com for design pressure and other performance ratings. Classic-Craft® Exterior Doors Panel face shall be manufactured from a proprietary thermoset composite, wood-grained to duplicate a handcrafted fir, oak, mahogany master or high detail smooth surface can be stained or painted in accordance with Therma-Tru® recommendations. Door edges shall be machinable kiln-dried premium wood, flush and square with door faces. The lock side shall be reinforced with a wide engineered lumber stile that runs the length of the door. The door shall be trimmable in length by 2 1/2" without rerailing (1 1/4" on top and bottom) and in width up to 1/4". Trimming shall be performed in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

Smooth-Star® Exterior Doors Panel face shall be manufactured from a fiberglassreinforced thermoset composite compound that must be painted. A 23/8" wide wood lockblock shall be incorporated to provide structural integrity. The door shall be field trimmable in width up to 1/4" and in length by 1/2". Trimming shall be performed in strict accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

Profiles™ Both sides of each panel shall be 24-gauge galvanized steel. The door edges shall be machinable kiln-dried white pine and provide full thermal break. A lockblock shall be incorporated to provide support for secure mounting of hardware. All door surfaces are factory primed white to accept exterior paint. Traditions Both sides of each panel shall be 25-gauge galvanized steel. The door edges shall be machinable kiln-dried white pine and provide full thermal break. A wood lock block shall be incorporated to provide secure mounting of hardware. All door surfaces are factory primed white to accept exterior paint. Doorlites Doorlites are insulated and exposed panes are tempered for safety and security. Single paned glass is available in a select group of clear doorlites. Optional wood grilles available for clear doorlites and transoms. Inserts – All glass (except flush-glazed styles) shall be bedded with glazing mastic and secured in doors with screws. Therma-Tru’s SMC, TCM and BTS doorlite frames are available for most styles except where noted. SMC, TCM and BTS frames shall resist significant deformation by heat up to 200ºF regardless of paint or stain color or placement behind a storm door. PVC doorlite frames require a finish within 30 days of installation. Failure to do so will void the warranty. Do not finish PVC doorlite frames a dark color or install behind a storm door. Flush-Glazed: The glass in flush-glazed styles shall be molded in place by a proprietary process that bonds the glass, door panels and core into one integral panel.

Weatherstripping – Jacketed urethane weatherstrip, in proprietary design, kerf-fit to frame stops, door bottom gasket with proprietary sill-interface feature, and right and left side corner seal pads. Sills – Wide range of sill options: Thermally broken fixed, adjustable with hardwood or high performance threshold, and public access. Selected styles have milled aluminum, anodized bronze, anodized satin nickel and anodized brass finishes. High performance sills feature stainless steel adjustment mechanisms help to resist corrosion. Please be aware that single door units built with public access sills have little resistance to water penetration, and double doors built with these sills have a potential to leak if installed exposed to weather. We recommend that units be installed away from weather under large soffits or overhangs. Fire Rating Performance Standards Fire and building codes vary throughout the country and acceptance of products and labels is left to the discretion of the local authorities. Consult NFPA-80 for further information on labeling, testing procedures and standards and their meaning. MODIFICATION OF PRODUCTS DESCRIBED IN THIS BROCHURE WHICH CARRY FIRE RATINGS (DOORS AND FRAMES) MAY VOID THE FIRE RATINGS. **Test conducted by Warnock-Hersey International Laboratories and Applied Research Laboratories. Finishing and Painting Installation, finishing and maintenance must be performed according to Therma-Tru®'s recommendations to comply with warranty requirements. Obtain a copy of the Therma-Tru® recommendations from your dealer or distributor or visit www.thermatru.com. Some highlights are: Classic-Craft® and Fiber-Classic® door systems should be stained using the Therma-Tru® Same Day® stain only or painted using primer and acrylic latex paint (exterior grade on outside).

Decorative Glass & Wrought Iron: Each Therma-Tru® decorative glass unit is hand-crafted by skilled artisans replicating Old World techniques. Each piece is a unique work of art and many things that would appear to be imperfections; small bubbles, lines, and waves within the glass are normal and are part of the old world charm.

DO NOT apply Therma-Tru® topcoat directly to an unfinished fiberglass door. DO NOT use automotive paint.

Transoms Transom frames and brickmould available to match door frames in primed pine or premium wood. All transoms are 131 ⁄ 2" in height except half rounds.

All Therma-Tru® doors must be finished within 6 months of the installation date for warranty coverage. Bare and unprotected wood such as jambs, mull posts and brickmould trim should be finished within 2 weeks of installation date for warranty and coverage.

Components Adjustable Security Strike Plate – Proprietary adjustable type, permitting in-out adjustment of door in frame, up to 3/16". Hinges – Minimum hinge size 4" x 4" x .098".

Classic-Craft® Canvas, Smooth-Star®, Profiles® and Traditions door systems should also be painted using acrylic latex paint (exterior grade on outside). No primer is needed on Smooth-Star® fiberglass or steel doors.

Maintenance Inspect finished surfaces periodically, as well as sealants and gasketing. All may be affected by exposure to environmental conditions. Recoat stained surfaces with clear coat, or repaint painted surfaces when they appear dull or rough. Be sure to check expiration dates on containers.

Ball-bearing hinges are recommended for 3'6" x 8'0" doors, doors using heavy lites (i.e. wrought iron) and all 20-minute fire-rated fiberglass doors.

*For best performance, double doors to be used in areas with severe weather exposure must be installed using entry alcoves or large soffit overhangs to protect entry unit from exposure. Multi-point locking systems are highly recommended for 8'0" and double door applications. Please Note: Due to ongoing product development, Therma-Tru Corp. reserves the right to make changes in design, materials and specifications without notice. Recommended Door Overhang: For best performance, all doors should be protected by an overhang. The recommended size is half the distance from the base of the door to the bottom of the overhang. So as an example, a distance of 10' for this dimension would require an overhang of 5' minimum. For wetter climates, southern or western exposures and for double doors, the overhang should be the same as the distance from the base of the door to bottom of the overhang. In this same example, the dimension is 10' so the overhang should be 10'.
